2250.06 - Bruggan-Birnathi War
2249.09
It is war.

To the consternation of about a fifth of humanity, Exoplanetary Secretary Whitfield has agreed to dispatch the space navy on an aggressive posture. Her public speech announcing the decision focuses on the risks of hostile allied forces on humanity's border, discussing the xenophobic and militaristic stances the United Lypian Suns and Birnathi Confederacy have maintained for decades. A sizeable minority - perhaps a tenth of the population - is enamored by the move.

The First and Second Interstellar Fleets have been deployed to the galaxy's edge, with orders to take the Mosthavon and Ojlars systems adjacent to current UNE borders. On the opposite end of human space, the engineers have begun upgrading the Wiyter pulsar station to guard against any enemy advances along that route. Current alloy reserves only allow building a single of the newly-designed Bermuda-class defensive platforms, equipped with the largest and most powerful laser weaponry ever deployed to take advantage of its star's nullifying effects on energy shields.

In the midst of multi-year military maneuvering, Captain Pannikar has successfully revived a section of the fungal network on Orvall's desiccated planet. The biocomputers hooked into part of the organism's mycelium have begun spitting out data once again. Some of it is at least correlated with things like the output of a number of stars, including Sol. More sophisticated decoding may take substantially more time and effort. Captain Pannikar has been ordered to take the Hawking behind the Nyamien bastion station for now.

2250.06
Before leaving for safer space, the crew of the Hawking hits a breakthrough in interpreting the fungal signals. The humongus fungus - increasingly referred to as the Fumongus - appears to have faster-than-light contact with offspring throughout the galaxy. It may be possible to gain a huge amount of intelligence from tapping into the network, but this also risks exposing humanity's own systems to anyone else listening.

[] Activate the network. (UNE gains Mycelial Network modifier: +1 codebreaking ability, 20 years of +20% Authoritarian ethos attraction.)
[X] Let sleeping mushrooms lie. (Gain 20,000 Unity, approx 4 years' production; this will hit the next step of the Supremacy tradition tree.)

Both the Birnathi and - bizarrely - the Bruggans have joined the Lypians in bad-mouthing the UNE on the floor of the Galactic Senate.

Rivalries declared - Birnathi Confederacy, Esurient Bruggan Absorbers.

Codebreaking seems really nice given where now at war.

I think that going further down the Supremacy tradition tree will help us more with combat, especially in the short term. Code breaking is more of a long term thing with ambiguous benefits.

So that's what this even chain do, for some reason, I never menage to finish it in my game

Codebreaking is nice, but man, 4 years of unity

As someone who never uses the Intrigue stuff, besides passive infor, and making sure to have good defense. I'll vote for this. Since operations cost Influence. and thats usually better spent elsewhere.

Given the uncertainty around the war, Secretary Whitfield elects to go the cautious route and order the Hawking back behind the frontlines. Bureaucratic resources are instead devoted to running naval personnel through extra training en-route, based on the latest insights and developments from Dr. Chamberlain's analysis of the wars against the Prikkiki-Ti.

Captain Ogawa and the Maui have arrived to relieve the Aldrin at the ancient battlefield site in Roschon. Captain Moorthi has been directed to assist orbital research around Kore.

"Some of our destroyers took missile hits, but nothing penetrated armor. En route to engage with the next station. Bosquet out."

Admiral Bosquet's quicker fleet rapidly has dispatched the Ojars and Mosthavon stations without any losses, and is now moving to meet backup with the Second Fleet for a joint attack deeper into Lypian territory.

The successful attack on the Demon's Maw station reveals that the Lypians were in possession of an ancient piece of technology. The gigantic structure in orbit of the central black hole has some form of space-warping anomaly at its core and is clearly not designed by any people human engineers have been able to study thus far.

The Exalted Sphere interstellar federation continues to develop into something of a Prikkiki-Ti containment initiative, with associate status now extended to the Sacred Kazam Republic. This may have been accelerated by the destruction of the Rutharian Empire by those damn lizards. Video recordings sent out from the Rutharian homeworld in its last hours before the iron curtain of the Prikkiki navy descended on it show horrifying scenes that have repulsed the civilized galaxy.

Humanity has captured its first inhabited system. Ground assault armies are already en route to the Millistamu system to pry planetary control from the existing Lypian colonial authorities. Scans from space indicate the colony is not yet even fully developed, still unpacking equipment and basic infrastructure from the ship that brought them here. Hopefully that will make them more willing to comply with a new government.

Within the same system lies a self-sustaining station similar in profile to the Curator and Artisan stations within UNE space. Envoy Nakajima has been diverted from coordinating spies in the Lypian Suns to work on communicating with these new aliens.

"I know you don't approve, but know that I did what I felt was necessary," Cordelia says quietly, shaking hands on-stage with re-elected Exoplanetary Secretary Katya Zhivenkova.

"That's exactly the problem," Katya replies through a toothy smile that doesn't reach her eyes.

When she enters her office later that evening, she sits with her head in her hands, trying to figure a way out of this war. The Birnathi and Lypian ambassadors have refused overtures towards separate peace deals - the most painless end may require following through swiftly forcefully.

Katya Zhivenkova (85, Skill 5, Architectural Sense, Industrialist, Home in the Sky) has become Exoplanetary Secretary. Her ship, the ISS Earhart, remains in Sol drydock, as there are no projects lacking science ships at present.

At age 94, Cordelia Whitfield has retired.

A wave of civilian refugees from the Polity of Nolyon have arrived in UNE space. The small fleet, which fled through Klaggian space to avoid the onslaught of genocidal lizards, has settled on Emesh, which had a suitable climate and plenty of jobs available for newcomers. The UN has now become a multi-species civilization, in the saddest possible way. In a perverse way, the destruction of the Rutharians and Nolyons means that the opposite corner of the galaxy is once again peaceful... at least for now.

Meanwhile, humanity's fleets continue to cut through Lypian stations like laser rifles through butter. Their success is emboldening hawkish figures like Dr. Chamberlain, who has begun pressing for more significant war aims.

The United Nations of Earth has finished researching the Galactic Administration technology, enabling the adoption of a new Civic! I will console-command in extra Unity to compensate for what would normally be the cost of reforming the government.

Choose one:

[] Diplomatic Corps: +2 Envoys, +10% Diplomatic Weight in the Galactic Senate
[] Functional Architecture: +1 slots for Buildings on each planet, Building and District costs -15%
[X] Idealistic Foundation: +10% Happiness among population

Do we have enough influence to make a Claim on the system with the L-Gate?

Having one of those is good, the L-Cluster is good clay to get.

@OliWhail
Is our relationship with the Curators good enough to buy a Scientist from them already?
IIRC they have a better trait than our people can get naturally.
