A bit late voting, but the current vote is fine with me. Personal wouldn't want do sound the alarm right after that first failure but having a Militia, even poor one, is better sooner rather than find later that we need it and don't have it.

I did not expect things to have become so hectic within the last couple of days. I probably should have as I knew a couple family members were coming from the other side of the state to attend my second cousin's first birthday party, and would be bunking with my grandmother and I until then, but I didn't expect all of this.

I don't know how much time I'll have to myself this weekend, as there are a couple of familial activities planned and a couple I expect will have to be made last minute, but I'll have Monday to work on the update even if I have no time.

Until then:

'I didn't understand the reason that others wouldn't be interested in relearning to fight, but I'm starting to.'

You stared at your arms and remembered the frustration and the shame that you had felt when you had attempted to practice those half-forgotten skills. You would attempt to move an arm, but instead wind up moving one of your stump-like stubs instead. Sometimes, even when you had managed to move to correct piece of your body, you had been unable to fully complete the action that you had set out to do. More often than not, you had found yourself tripping over nothing and falling onto the hard unforgiving earth over the most basic of tasks. You had always known thought that you were just a little clumsy, but....
The last time that you had fallen, you had fallen onto your side. Your Gemstone had hit the earth with a dull thud that had not left so much as a scratch, but had blurred everything for several long minutes afterward. You had to pay more attention. To be more careful.

'Maybe --'

At that moment, a series of distinct knocks rang throughout your home. You looked up at the wall -- when had the light climbed so high? how long had she spent ruminating over what had happened? -- before she stood to answer the door.

Counsellor Friod smiled. "It's time for the next meeting, High Counsellor."

"O-Of course...."

Martial: Maison does not have a formal army. While there are Gems that are willing to host fighting seminars to help other Gems relearn how to fight, Gems believe there is no need for fighting and lack an interest in it.
Sound The Alarm [Dice Check 30 : Rolled 43]
Success

The possibility that High Counsellor Vieux could actually have been attacked by a monster and the possibility of that monster waiting around the outskirts of Maison for another potential victim led you to decide that you couldn't let things stand. You would convince the Gems in Maison to relearn how to fight or learn to use magic to defend themselves. You would just have to come up with a reason to make them want to learn without sounding crazy.

You talked with Counsellor Guerrier about the problem. She told you that the best way to do what you wanted to do would be to tell Gems that you were forming a Militia that could respond in times of natural disasters -- such as cave in or rock slides -- and train up the Gems that enlisted. It would not make sure that all of the Gems in Maison could protect themselves, but it would ensure that there would be an organization that could respond to anything that happened.

You agreed.

You and Counsellor Guerrier travelled around Maison to talk to Gems about the Militia, but it was hard to convince them that the Militia would be necessary. You barely managed to get enough Gems to enlist and, even then, it seemed that they were humoring you more than anything.

Either way, you had your Militia. Officially, the Militia would be used for local emergencies during times of natural disasters such as a cave in or a sudden rock slide. Unofficially, the Militia was the first step in your plan to protect Maison against High Counsellor Vieux's potential murderer.

Result: 50 Militia Gained [100 Credit Upkeep]. 300 Credit Spent

Diplomacy
: You managed to impress the general populace with High Counsellor Vieux's Funeral, but there are a lot of things that you need to do in order for the Gems in Maison to view you as their proper leader.
Open Door [Dice Check 30 : Rolled 96]
Great Success

It did not surprise you that there were a couple of Gems that came to you to complain about Counsellor Guerrier's training from those in the Militia. It disappointed you, but it did not surprise you.

Those Gems aside, the Gems that came to your office went there for a quick talk before you went about their business. You came to tell you how much they liked or appreciated the ceremony that you had thrown for High Counsellor Vieux, to offer some pointers or small words of encouragement, to talk about how things had been going, or to just talk about their lives.

You made a note on a slate about each problem that the Gems brought up -- serious or otherwise -- and did what you could to address them. You helped move furniture around three Gems' houses, found four items that Gems had misplaced, and settled disputes between at least seven different Gems. You talked with Counsellor Guerrier about reducing the amount of hours the Militia trained each week, Counsellor Chaud about the potential of lowering taxes, Pointe about the possibility of future mining competitions, and more. And, what you couldn't resolve right away, you made a note to do something about as soon as you could.

Overall, you felt closer to the Gems than you did before. You felt that you could understand them a lot better now.

Result: Public Opinion improved from Content to Satisfied. +1 Diplomacy from dealing with Gem problems.

Stewardship:
You don't have a lot of experiencing in running things, but you think that you're starting to get the hang of it. It'll take time to fully learn and master everything, but.... You'll get there.
Public Danger [Dice Check 40 : Rolled 74]
Success

This was actually a good idea that Counselor Chaud brought up -- and one that should have been done a lot sooner. You and Counsellor Chaud travelled through Maison to talk to Gems about the planned removal of the machines and to recruit those that wanted to help remove them. The Gems in the Militia all volunteered to help, as did several others that hadn't wanted to join the Militia, which probably shouldn't have surprised you but it did.

You and Counsellor Chaud traveled to each machine, made an annotated list on how carefully and how urgently they needed to be removed before sending the Gems over to take them down. You followed them to each sight to watch them work and offer what support to them you could.

By the end of the week, the last of the machines had been extracted from the wall and transported to a bare stretch of earth that would house them until you figured out what to do with them.

Result:
Public Opinion Increased from Satisfied to Happy. Public Mood Increased from Content to Satisfied. Spent 300 Credits.

Intrigue:
There are a couple of things that Counsellor Masquer found in her failed search for the creature that attacked High Counsellor Vieux. Perhaps now is the time to investigate them?
An Ear To The Ground [Dice Check 25 : Rolled 58]
Success

Counsellor Masquer stared at you for a long moment after your request. "... I think that I have a better idea," She said. "I'll teach you how to find out what you to know."

Before you could tell Counsellor Masquer that wouldn't be necessary, she took hold of your arm. Her thin and slender physique belied the amount of strength that she had: she pulled you up out of your chair and out of your office with ease. You tried to escape her, but ended up accidentally banging your head against the wall, which made her forcible extraction all that easier.

Counsellor Masquer took you through Maison, and she taught you what she could. You learned how to subtly lead people into specific conversation topics, how to get them to naturally reveal information that they otherwise wouldn't, and the basics of reading people.

You and Counsellor Masquer also managed to get a more in-depth reading of Maison's reaction to your leadership. The Gems in Maison had initially been skeptical of how you would do at first, but had been quickly won over by the drive that you showed and all of the things that you had done so far.

Result: Public Opinion Increased from Satisfied to Happy. +3 to Intrigue.

Piety:
You aren't the most religious or the most magical Gem in the Prime Kindergarten, but there is nothing that states you can't learn to be. You have potential, after all.
Magic School [Dice Check 35 : Rolled 23]
Failure

While Counsellor Poilu had been interested in the idea of a proper magical school, she had warned you that there were not a lot of practioners that would be interested in or have the time to teach. You had asked her for the names of practioners that she thought could be convinced and headed out to meet and talk with them about it.

The practioners had a myriad of different reactions to the news. Some of them were interested in teaching others and passing on what they knew. Some of them wanted to, but were in the middle of some form of project that would prevent them from doing so and thus didn't have the time. Most of them either didn't feel like they had the skill to teach or didn't want to teach.

You resolved to come back and talk with them again in a couple of weeks.

Result: Magic School locked for three turns.

Learning:
You and Counsellor Ensiegnant found something within the Archives, but it doesn't do a lot to answer all of the questions you have. In fact, it brought up a lot of questions you still don't have the answer too. You want to get some answers.
There's So Much To Learn [Dice Check 40 : Rolled 1 Nat 100]
Natural 100

You used to tell other Gems that "You love learning" and they would laugh at you. But you do. You relish each new concept that you learn and take apart and roll it around in your brain. You love what you did before which was helping Counsellor Ensiegnant teach her other students -- new or old -- and helping make sure that it was engaging and fun. Maybe what you want to do -- more than to not make a mess of things as High Counsellor of Maison -- is to share and make other you have that same love of learning that you have.

You knew that you were not as smart or as knowledgeable as Counsellor Ensiegnant, but you were smart in your own way. You loved to write and read and learn. You wished and hoped that all of Counsellor Ensiegnant's students -- new or old -- would never lose that love of learning, the curiosity that they had emerged from the crust with, the desire to use that knowledge.

"I am glad to hear that, LaCroix." Counsellor Ensiegnant pulled you out of your thoughts. "I wish more people could share that attitude."

You flushed brown and looked down -- embarrassed to realize that you had said all of that aloud -- before you risked a look toward her. She had resumed reading and sorting through the pile of slates that you had brought her and had seemed to have started two new piles. You didn't know whether to feel glad that the slates would finally be properly organized when she had finished with them or to feel anxious because you would have to be the one that would have to meet her exacting standards. She set a slate down on one of the rapidly shrinking free spaces she had and then picked up another, older, slate.

You reminded yourself that you were supposed to be helping counsellor ensiegnant before you picked up a slate of your own. It looked to be an old comprehensive treatise on the rocks and metals that could be found in or around maison. It was something that might be worthwhile to take a look on later, but it wasn't "lost knowledge". You put it on top of its own pile, and you moved on to the next and then the next one after that.

"LaCroix...." Counsellor Ensiegnant said some time later, pulling you from a slate on Form Alteration Magic that Counsellor Poilu had apparently written. You looked up to find her staring at the slate in her hands with an unreadable expression on her face. "You need to come take a look at this."

You put the slate down and headed over to see what Counsellor Ensiegnant had found. She handed the slate to you with the utmost care and then tilted her head up to stare at the ceiling of the archives. You frowned deepened at the reaction before you looked down at the slate.

It looked to be an old record of an event that had happened before the event that we had read about in the first rotation. It was as crumbly as the other slate had been, as hard to read as it had been, but better preserved. It was hard to tell who had written it, but that didn't matter. What mattered was the information that it contained.

The slate told of an unusual figure that had appeared out of the blue light -- small with tetrahedron-shaped hair -- and of what the figure had done after she had arrived. She had apparently traveled a short distance from where she had arrived, manifested a hexagonal slate, and used the slate to cut a perfectly rectangular hole in Maison's walls. There were sketches of the figure, the hole she had cut into the wall, and some strange room that she had created.

You stared at the Gemstone on the figure's neck.

'We're not alone.'

Result: Discovered one lost knowledge slate. Learned about 'Other Gem' and 'Cavernous Room'. Organized the Archives. +1 Learning from intense research.

Personal: You aren't totally confused on what to do now, but you aren't completely sure on the best course of action either. Some time to yourself could help clear somethings up.
Spark Of Magic [Dice Check 30 : Rolled 49]
Success

You spent most of your small amount of free time thinking about Form Alteration Magic. You had learned about Form Alteration Magic from Counsellor Ensiegnant and Counsellor Poilu, but you had never attempted to use it. You hadn't seen the need to learn it when you weren't doing anything that required it, but now....

You sat down in your home and tried to force yourself to use Form Alteration Magic. You didn't really achieve anything aside from a splitting headache and a pleasantly-shaped rock that you had used as a couch that may or may not have been broken when you threw it out your door. It narrowly missed Pointe by a mere inch and shattered on impact. You told Pointe that you were redecorating, but were unsure if she had believed you.

You went ahead and asked Counsellor Poilu for some help. After a brief discussion on what Form Alteration Magic was and how it was used, she gave you a list of techniques that were supposed to help new Form Alteration Magic practitioners learn Form Alteration Magic. Although youweren't sure what she meant when she told you not to hold a form for too long, you told her that you wouldn't.

The first technique that was on the Counsellor Poilu's list was 'Fist Into Ball'. It was a basic Form Alteration spell that could be used by a Gem to alter the form of their fist into a ball. Simple and without a lot of the drain that more advanced spells were supposed to have. Perfect for new Form Alteration Magic practitioners.

You clenched your right hand into a fist, closed your eyes and focused. 'Fist Into Ball. Fist Into Ball. Fist Into Ball...!' You felt a strange sensation. It felt like... It felt like....

It was indescribable.

It felt something you were pushing two items together, but that the items were repelling each other. It felt like a constant, invisible pressure against your forehead, as if it were pressing out from your Gemstone and was one last shove away from breaking out from inside of it. You weren't sure if you liked the sensation, it made you feel on edge, as if you had to be careful so that you wouldn't suddenly hurt yourself with it.

You took a breath and focused on your desire to use Form Alteration Magic to alter your right fist into a ball. 'Fist Into Ball. Fist Into Ball. Fist Into Ball.'

Your magic flickered to life, shifted, and then flowed through you toward your fist. When your magic reached your fist, the outline of your fist blurred and flickered fitfully for a few moments. The form settled as the magic faded to reveal something that wasn't quite a ball, but close to it.

You couldn't stop smiling.

'Let's try this again....'

Result: Learned Fist Into Ball Spell.
