From Between Dark Trees (LoTR RPG-lite Quest)

[X] Attack the troll and enter the guarded door.

WE WILL HEROICALLY SLIT ITS THROAT WHILST IT SLEEPS

We're literally not going to get a more ideal set of circumstances to kill it than this, if we have to kill it. Moreover, I don't want that thing coming after us as we're trying to flee a horde of angry goblins whilst shepherding terrified children. If it caught us on the bridge it would straight-up be disastrous, and at that size it can quite possibly outrun us on foot. It can almost certainly outrun a group of half-starved children on foot.

Nightmares of Angmar - The Mountain Troll
The mountain troll slumbers as you silently take up positions. Cirmacar and Fareth both keep back while stringing their bows, both the sturdy ranger staff and the mighty warbow held by the elf. In front are Fraech, Hwalda, and yourself with swords for when the troll wakes. Essylt, being largely unarmed except for her dagger, is hanging back behind the archers.

On a silent signal, Fareth and Cirmacar both draw their bows to full extension - and loose. Cirmacar's glances off the troll's thick hide in a crack of stone, while Fareth's finds a little crevice in the rocky skin of the troll's upper arm and buries itself inside. The troll is roused with a terrible roar of anger, its great hand ripping the arrow out of its arm like a twig, the other grasping a fearsome club that looks more like a fallen tree than a weapon. Fraech blanches where he stands beside you, and you can't blame him.

(91/96 Endurance)

The archers loose again as the troll lumbers towards you. Again Cirmacar's arrow simply glances off, but by luck Fareth lands true again in a vulnerable spot (Great Success!). This time the arrow is driven deep, nearly half its shaft vanishing into the troll's thigh. It ignores it despite the bellow of pain, and its dark eyes settle on the loose front line preventing it from reaching your ranged attackers. With a great swing of its mighty tree branch it brings the weapon down on Fraech. The hill-man abandons any attempt at defense and instead hurls himself aside, the impact knocking him off balance and sending him sprawling across the ground. You and Hwalda dart forward to try and take advantage of the attack, you slipping under the troll's arm to hack at its knee while your guide angles her sword at its other ankle. There is a 'tink' like metal on rock as Hwalda's blade simply glances off, but yours lands true against the back of the mountain troll's knee. It scrapes more than slices, but it comes free stained with black blood (Great Success!).

(65/96 Endurance)
(Fraech: 9/18 Endurance)

The troll roars in fury and pulls the club back with a lurching tug, sweeping it back towards you. There is a surge of panic as what looks like a wall of twisted wood the height of your torso whips towards you, and you drop to the ground as it passes overhead. The sweeping kick it delivers a second later is less easily avoided, and you feel a low throb spread from your belly. Fortunately it was only with the side of its broad foot in a clumsy sweep, but the sheer weight behind it leaves you breathless. There is a whistle as an arrow shatters against its neck, and the troll turns away from you with an angry snarl. It is completely blindsided as Fraech lunges up from where he lies and stabs the tip of his sword down against the top of the beast's foot (Great Success!). For a moment you think it will go straight through its foot and to the ground beneath, but the sheer thickness and toughness of the rocky hide stops it barely a hands-width deep. The resulting roar hums along your bones, and it turns furious eyes on the hill-man as he lies there. It does not see Hwalda dart in and take another cut at its ankle. But it does feel it - the hill-woman's sword bites deeply, and a gush of black blood spatters against the ground. The troll's intimidating bellow turns into a snarl and it turns around suddenly, pulling its foot away and stamping it back and away from her sword. As its heavy leg lands there is a crack like an ancient tree breaking, and the monster's leg simply buckles as the tendon at the back of its ankle snaps (Wound!).

(47/96 Endurance)
(Bregolas: 22/31 Endurance)
(Fraech: 9/18 Endurance)

The company wastes no time in capitalising. While arrows shatter against the troll's stony back, your swords find better purchase. You and Hwalda both open up bleeding gashes along its arms with heavy chops, and the troll staggers back as best it can while forced down to one knee. It turns its shoulder and then brings the massive club up and over its head in a ponderous arc that despite appearances completes itself with terrible speed. Hwalda lunges to the side to avoid the overwhelming strike, but there is a sickening bang and crack as lands across the back of her leg. Her scream of agony echoes off the rock walls, a high and keening wail that hurts your ears.

(30/96 Endurance - Wounded!)
(Bregolas: 22/31 Endurance)
(Fraech: 9/18 Endurance)
(Hwalda: 9/18 Endurance - Broken Leg)

Fraech shouts angrily in echo to Essylt's worried cry, but his sword simply glances off. Your own misses entirely as the troll ducks forward and almost accidentally avoids a chop you aimed at the back of its neck. It does not avoid Fareth's arrow, which lances across the intervening space and buries itself fletching-deep in the back of the mountain troll's exposed thigh, the gleaming steel tip emerging from the front of its massive limb (Extraordinary Success!). The troll screams in agony, a deep and bellowing sound, and raises its club up. It brings it down on Hwalda in a brutal slam. The hill-woman sees it coming and gasps raggedly, trying to roll to the side and out of the way. The club hits with a sound like a bundle of twigs snapping, overlaid by a slamming thump. Hwalda's chest and side is pulverised by the impact, laying her open in a red mess that instantly silences her.

(11/96 Endurance - Wounded!)
(Bregolas: 22/31 Endurance)
(Fraech: 9/18 Endurance)
(Hwalda: Dead)

Essylt screams. Cirmacar puts an arrow in the troll's neck that has the beast grabbing at it with a snarl and turning to look at the elf. Fraech wastes no time and whips his sword up and across, the tip scything through the troll's exposed throat. There is an eruption of black blood and the troll groans lowly, its clumsy hand clutching at its neck. Steaming darkness still spurts between its fingers as it seems to sway in place, then the beast collapses where it kneels. The monster's death rattle is mercifully short, then it falls silent.

Nightmares of Angmar - The Hoard
You do not enter the vault for some time, taking a little while to make a cairn for Hwalda. The hill-woman's death had left moving her almost impossible, and so you awkwardly straighten her limbs as much as you can and put her sword over her breast before covering her with stones. The door itself is locked, which explains why it has not been opened beforehand, but with a little care and ingenuity it opens easily enough. Beyond the intellect of goblins, certainly, but not anybody with a familiarity with locks. If you had not so recently been forced to bury Hwalda, you can only imagine your reaction at what greets you.

Gold and precious things are strewn through the large chamber that the iron door opens into, glittering with precious metal and gems. Looted tapestries of silver and gold thread are simply draped over mounds of coins and silvered drinking vessels, while weapons with ornate hilts and crossguards are piled up in corners. There is enough wealth here to live like a king for years on end, but what you suffered to get here diminishes the triumph. The party breaks up in a solemn mood to examine the area. You find yourself simply drawing your fingers through the piles of wealth and splendorous things, letting them clink and clatter. For a long while you find a place to sit on a loose mound of coins and watch the others.

Fraech seems to have come through the loss of Hwalda best, some childlike joy appearing whenever he found something especially handsome. Little trinkets found their way into his pockets rather than coins, rings and other small things. You find yourself noting the common themes, and purse your lips together as you read some of the inscriptions on the coinage. While some are in elvish and Eregion, dating from the Second Age, the vast majority were minted by the kings of Arnor, Cardolan, and Arthedain. The plundered treasuries and manors of dead kingdoms, in any case.

Fareth is mostly focused on the weapons, and after perhaps half an hour ceases her search entirely. In her hands is a finely made but unadorned longsword. You give her a questioning look. "The mark on the hilt is that of Arahel, one of our first chieftains," she explains quietly. "The blade itself older still, from Westernesse before it sank beneath the waves. Long have we thought he was slain by the Enemy. Now we know." She sets her own sword aside with gentle hands, and begins the task of cleaning the old sword with her supplies. It still looks brand new, but a little care never hurt. It prompts you to stand and investigate the weapons yourself. Most of them are simply ceremonial or display pieces, pretty things that goblins and orcs would have thought valuable. Others may have been magnificent swords or spears once, but age has rusted and pitted them.

Then something catches your eye in a nearby pile. There is a white sparkle, and you bend down to pick up the ring that had laid partially concealed under the stem of a goblet of beaten gold. It seems to be made from intertwined silver and golden wire, faceted gems of adamant studded around the circumference at the heart of little sculpted flowers. The detail is magnificent, and the design is clearly elvish. Judging from the provenance of the other items in the treasure hoard you would guess it came from Eregion. But that is not what fascinates you, because it has a gentle heat under your fingers. It reminds me of those days you spent in Rivendell near the forge, the low but nonetheless intense heat that chased away the cold. You can almost hear the ring of hammer on metal. Is this one of those lesser rings of yore, made in Eregion before its fall?

Well, shit. We found a ring. Not The Ring, and probably not one of the Rings of Power, but a magic ring nevertheless.

This makes me feel so conflicted - either we can put it on and shit happens immediately, or we don't do so now and maybe miss out on what benefits (and curses) it may bring. And wearing it might trigger a memory from our forgotten past, or it could bring doom upon us all.

The original team survived; I call this a win. Farewell, Hwalda, your treasure share will be put to good use.
Wait, there's more treasure than we can carry. Noo, Hwalda, why did you have to leave us!?

[x] Put it on.

Even the One Ring saved Bilbo's life more than once, and it was the poster child for an Evil Artifact.

In all honesty, I'd thought one of us would volunteer to sneak up and stab it in the throat, then the rest of us would keep it busy whilst it bled out. Still, on balance I don't regret it.

[X] Put it on.

If this is one of the lesser rings than any side-effects are probably manageable, and it could prove valuable at the moment.

Wait, there's more treasure than we can carry. Noo, Hwalda, why did you have to leave us!?

Clearly we need to work out how much treasure a mule train comprised of half-starved children can carry!

In all seriousness though, we should bring Hwalda's family back her share of the treasure, plus a weregild.

@Sayle, to clarify, this is just a vote for whether or not we put the ring on right now, instead of whether or not we keep the ring, right?

[X] Put it on.

If we're keeping the possibly evil magical ring anyways, we may as well see what it does for us, so we don't have to surprised in case we end up needing to put it on later.

[X] Put it on

Werent there a elvish smith who died when the elven allies of Arnor were tricked or something?

Pretty sure this is from that elvish forgemaster.
