Episode 5, part 4
"Dead Bite"
It has been some time since you visited the place of your arrival. Cloaking yourself in shadow you turn and start heading more north than east. Towards the central Sunnydale cemetery. That will give a bit of time for the bug to lay down a trail. Interestingly, when you get to the tracks again in order to cross over you can hear a distant dinging and a powerful rumble.
You wait in an alley and watch as a fast moving light burns through the night air on your left, followed by a enormous wall of white metal surmounting surging metal wheels. A 'train'. You hadn't seen one yet outside of pictures. It is certainly a powerful creation of mortals. If you were caught in front of it, it'd likely kill you instantly. But, as you look at it, you judge that at your full power you could easily leap up onto its moving top if you so wished. You'd still die if you were unable to do so however.
Shortly the tail end of the train passes and you cross over the tracks. They are comfortably warm under your bare feet. The town opens up around you with the gently curving lines of the various streets and neighborhoods. Walking through them your mind considers the problem of the insect woman.
If she is like her daughter but more experienced, a reasonable assumption, then she is of no threat to you whatsoever. You also smelt no other bugs on the daughter except for her mother, so it is quite unlikely she had siblings nearby. So there is no other source for a brood than the Mother Mantis. So, as you partially surmised when you detected her the first time, the true form of her threat is the potential of her brood. You tilt your head left as you consider it further.
In and of themselves, unless it was several dozen individuals at once, a brood is unlikely to be a physical threat to you. They would be to Annie, but your useful servant best serves you by guarding the warded mansion. For now at least. And such a brood would take time to mature. Enough time that either of the Master or the Warrior could deal with them before it actually escalates to the point where you need to do something. They also each have their own reasons to do so as well, dominion for the Master and a calling for the Warrior.
Hmm…
Of course physical
threats are not the only ones… they could for example upset a magical balance or summon something much worse.
That would be an actual threat to you, you judge. Thus, the true focus of your efforts will be on finding and destroying any nests. Prevent the broods from ever forming and let the Master or the Warrior deal with the rest of the problem.
A much better use of your time and effort.
Gravedirt scent wafts towards you on the air. You are close to the cemetery. Another three turns and you come out across the road from the wall and fence which surrounds it. Vampire scent is thin right where you are, though you passed spots of much higher intensity on your walk. Crossing the road sedately you reach the wall and with a graceful fluidity, leap over it.
Landing softly you take a moment to look around in the shadows that cling to the cemetery. There is nothing up and moving around at the moment. Inspection finished you head deeper into it. As you walk you brush your hands over the gravestones and crypts and scent the air for the strongest vampire smell.
Eventually you find one, sharp and astringent like soap, with blood sprayed into it. Following it slowly you find a crypt of dull stone being eaten by ivy and bushes, a sickly tree leaning over it. This close you can sense a weaker vampire, a subtle turbidity in the magic of the world around you.
The scent of fresh blood is thick in the air.
It must have just finished feeding then. You find the door, a heavy slab of stone on thick hinges. Grabbing it with one hand you tug,
hard. Screeching incredibly loudly the stone door flies open to bang on the outside of the crypt.
"What!?" The exclamation comes from a vampire, currently leaning over the corpse of a fat man laying on top of a gray sarcophagus. The vampire is male, with bright red hair and blue eyes mortals would be quite attracted to. His clothes are nice, a combination of long sleeved white button down shirt and sleek black pants. They are slightly dirty.
His face pales to bone white as your incredibly brief examination is performed. Spinning, the vampire grabs up the corpse and
flings it at you. You neatly sidestep the flying mass of dead human flesh.
When the vampire tries to run past you, you reach out and shoot him in the leg with a moderately powerful Soul Arrow. Letting out a pitiful scream the vampire hops forward a bit before collapsing onto his face.
"Aaaaghhh… fuuuck." He groans as he tries to turn over before you grab him by the feet, digging in a little on the burnt portion, and haul him into his crypt. With a heave you slide him along the floor to slam into the end of the sarcophagus back first, sending dust falling down onto himself. While he's busy flopping around like a fish you turn and pull the door firmly closed. There are no windows here and the door seals tightly, so it is good neither of you need to breathe.
"What a pathetic piece of cheap trash." You say with an imitated bored tone as you turn back to look at him, pulling the appropriate words from what you can read of this thing's personality. They hit the mark, his body tensing and face contorting into a very angry form of the vampire demon face. He goes to stand up. You kick him in the forehead.
"No." You scold, relaxing your posture such that it looks like a picture of lounging elegance. Setting a bare foot on his chest you stare down at him, an imitated expression of aristocratic haughtiness consuming your features. The vampire complies with your implicit threat and inherent superiority.
There are many questions you have for this thing. Where its fellows sleep, where its Master sleeps, the "anointing", what it knows of the various items of power you have felt briefly, and what it knows of the strange organization of the sewers.
The vampire shifts uncomfortably and then tenses.
Before he can try anything you strike downwards, grabbing him by the head and slamming it down onto the sarcophagus with a
crack!
"Aaaaaaa!" He screams into the stone as you grind his head into it. Digging your left hand into his neck you lift him up slightly to look at you and you
purr.
"As should be apparent, I have
questions you worthless bag of meat. You will answer or I will break you." Your voice holds a chilling tone. Imitated, of course.
"Do you understand?" You say, shaking him as he moans piteously, and nods.
"Yes yes! Don't kill me don't kill me, fuck…" He blubbers at you, trying to look back so he can see you.
"Gooood, good. Tell me of Darla…" You say, in a voice which would be darkly terrifying to any mortal who was nearby…
You have to break both his legs at the knee before he drops what he knows amongst the screaming. Which is sadly little. He knows not of where she sleeps, nor how long she has been with the Master. He does say that there are stories of her being involved romantically with the "traitor". That certainly peaks your interest, though you don't get a name, he's too new to know it.
You break his feet for that.
"What of the Master's new lieutenant? Hmm?" You say as you lounge against the end of the sarcophagus, holding the monster down on top of it.
"H-him?! His name is Marius! Oh dark gods..." He screams to the air. You stab a hand downwards.
"AAAAAA!" He screams as you remove your hand.
"He-he lives… god fuck…" You stab him to make him talk faster, "...AAAAA! He sleeps in the Restfield Cemetery!" The vampire babbles at you.
A little more applied bodily destruction and he confirms that the reason he knows this is that he is under Marius's command. Apparently outside the other four or so grunts he also has a set of female vampires who follow him around and sleep with him. They are named; Michelle, Jeanne, and Amanda. You gather that this piece of trash grunt was rather jealous, with how easily that particular piece of information comes.
Your other questions don't gather you much. He knows nothing of any powerful items or why the sewers are the way they are, simply stating that that is how "They have always been!" while you break his ribs. He also knows nothing about the "anointing".
How annoying.
Growling like screeching metal you lift him up fully off of the sarcophagus and slam him down, back first.
"Tell me where the Master is." You command him. He twitches violently and shakes his head in negation. Growl heightening in pitch you slam your hands down onto his gut and start
pulling out his essence.
"AAAAAAGGGHHH OHAAHAAHAAAAAAAAAA no no no no! Mercy! Mercy!" He howls in nigh-mortal agony. His shrieks rise in pitch and volume, leaving the range of human hearing, as you start shoving your Fog and Soul into him. It starts to burn him from within, the sheer power you are shoving into his body making his eyes and mouth burn with phantom Fog light.
He spasms and flails like a man possessed as you continue for at least a minute. Then you stop abruptly. Smoke rises from him as he huffs and whimpers pitifully. You've made quite the mess of him now. You distantly hear and feel another weak vampire approaching, drawn by the screams as you intended. Leaving him you create a Paralysis Sigil just inside the door.
When you return you feel it, a tugging on his essence. You look closer. What you see is a twist in his essence. Your head tilts left.
It would appear there is a mystical command using the bond of bloodlines.
How frustrating. You will not be getting that particular piece of information from this weak creature. The approaching vampire takes that moment to burst in through the door.
"Michael!?" She screams at the vampire laid out before you. She goes to rush inward and then steps into the Sigil which activates. Bolts of green magic burn into her as she is stopped cold.
"Guhhuhggghhh!" She screams through locked teeth as her skeleton flickers into visibility as dark shadows in her skin. With a seemingly careless wave of your hand you shoot "Michael" in the head with a Soul Arrow, dusting him instantly.
"Mnnnnnnghhhh! Nnn!" The female yells through her teeth. You ignore it as you look her over.
She is wearing a knee length black dress and artful sandals over pale white skin. Shoulder length brown hair writhes with the power going through her as her brown eyes roll in her head. From where her hands are convulsing in front of her you can see her nails are painted red.
When the Sigil lets up a second later she flops to the ground, smoking and twitching, but still animate. Leaning down, you slide a hand into her hair and
pull. She rises, whimpering in pain as her hands try to come up and dislodge yours. They fail.
You then proceed to work her over like you did her friend.
Under your horrible, methodical, ministrations you confirm that she too has a lock on the information about the Master. Moving on from that useless topic you go through the rest.
She knows some about the resting places of vampires who sleep in this cemetery, pointing you to three more of them. All are weak and new like she is. You will be dealing with them before you leave, and given what these two have said interrogating them is not useful.
She knows the anointing is for something related to the "Order of Aurelius guys", which you gather to be some kind of elite group within the vampires. Apparently they are identified by specific special rings. You will have to grab one of them to interrogate and torture.
As for magical items she knows nothing. Same with the sewer structure, she gives a similar answer to what Michael said.
Wiping your hand off on the sarcophagus you raise the other one and dust her. You leave as her death screech ripples out into the night. That was not particularly productive beyond a few tidbits of information and the location of the lieutenant.
Walking to the corpse of the man killed by the vampire you look at it carefully. It takes you several moments before you sense the beginnings of a vampire scent and energy rising from the corpse. That particular issue you solve with a quick Soul Arrow to the torso, blasting a fist sized hole into it.
Turning away you head for the closest of the three vampires the female told you about. You didn't care about his name. You find his crypt in a corner of the cemetery near the entrance, a grimy edifice surmounted by an angel statue with only one badly beaten wing remaining. The door is simple metal and wood.
Not needing finesse for this you simply blast your way through, vaporising the door in a burst of smoke and splinters. The vampire is sitting on a sofa, facing one of those talking boxes, a "television" apparently, and he spins to look at you as his door explodes. His expression is utterly flummoxed as you raise your hand and core his torso. He poofs into dust without any fanfare.
You do not leave his lair immediately however, remembering something your servant said about the mortal funds needing to be replenished soon. Searching through it, mostly by picking things up and tipping them over and then dropping them to shatter on the ground, you eventually find a few scraps of mortal funds and stick those in your belt. The room is utterly trashed when you leave.
You are going to need a better way to carry things soon. Perhaps one of the vampires will have something that will work.
Elegantly you stride toward the next crypt, deeper into the cemetery and closer to that one crypt Giles marked on your map.
A handful of minutes later you repeat the same door exploding entrance. You find wet and slimy walls with stairs down leading into the dark, from which is emanating a rather loud set of startled screams. It doesn't take but a moment more for the first of two vampires, apparently this one had a friend visiting, to surge up the stairs with a snarl on her face.
You blast her head off for her troubles. Passing through the quickly fading dust you emerge into the main room, where you see a man. Strangely for a vampire, he is wielding a weapon. You look at it quickly. Metal barrel, wooden stock, the smell of smoke. And it is pointed at you. Seeing his finger tighten on the trigger you dodge left while summoning a Mirror Image directly in front of you.
There is a massive
Boom! and your Mirror Image's head and neck explode into gore.
Hmm… interesting. As your image twists and fades with a burble you shoot around it and get him in the gut. The arrow sends him flying into a wall, the weapon still gripped tight in his grasp. While he is stunned you rush up to him, and kick the weapon out of his hand to clatter into a corner. Then you obliterate his head, the force of the spell cracking the brick wall and knocking down a nearby mounted salmon.
"Yodle lay Yodle lay-!" The salmon screams and flails, before your spell obliterates it. Looking at the wreckage you see sparking bits and mechanisms.
How odd.
With that strange moment over, the battle is done.
Going over to the weapon where it fell you examine it. Leaning down after verifying that it is non-magical, and thus safe to pick up, you grab it and run your hands over it. As you saw very very briefly, it has a metal barrel which is now hot and smelling of freshly burnt powder. There is an arrangement below the barrel, an oak grip on a metal guide rail. Near the trigger you find a place where you think ammo would be loaded and a string of engravings calling it a "Remington 870".
The stock itself is oak as well and is quite polished and well cared for. It also has a leather strap hooked to it for easy carrying. Fiddling with the weapon for a moment you get it to "pump" ejecting a spent… cartridge of a sort.
Hmm… you will be keeping this. Your servant can make use of it. You put it on by the strap and start moving around the room.
It is not
particularly large, but it is of decent size. The walls are a dark brown and red brick, the floor is gray, and the bodies are stored in vaults on the walls. In the middle of it is a bed with sleek red sheets and an ornamented frame. Off to the side is a table with an open bottle of red wine spiked with what smells like blood and what you would think is a romantic setting for two. There is also a large bear rug on the floor at the foot of the bed.
Searching around you look for three things; more mortal funds, ammunition, and a means to carry all of your stuff. You find a very shiny black leather purse contraption very quickly, sitting near the table which smells of the female. It's not very big, but you open it and dump out all of the various items already inside it, catching the wallet as it falls out.
With it now empty you put your already collected mortal funds, the wallet, your front door keys and the censer which you were still carrying around into it. Putting it on opposite the weapon you start tearing the room apart in a search for more funding. Eventually you find a stack of it stuck into the mattress of the bed. It smells of the male.
Once the room is thoroughly destroyed you leave, emerging into the night air to find it alive with the sounds of crickets and other small life, weapon bouncing against your back. One more vampire to go.
This one takes a little bit to get to, being in an out of the way grove of trees deep in the cemetery. It is low to the ground and sprinkled around it are a series of statues, all of various animals and creatures. When you scent the air and look closer there seems to be no evidence of a vampire inside there right now.
You blow the door open and look in at a long room, strewn with a variety of furniture around the centerpiece of a coffin on a plinth. No vampire. The room is then quickly searched. You find nothing of interest besides the faint scent of fermented potatoes which is similar to a Latrian drink. You leave the room in ruins, a dim light flickering weakly over the scene of destruction, the coffin tipped and lining ripped out, the furniture tipped over and the upholstery torn up.
Waiting for this particular vampire will be of little use to you. They are not giving you much when you eat them. So now comes the next step while you wait for more time to pass and the Mother Mantis to lay a thicker trail.
You could go to Restfield cemetery, where you found the Gauntlet and interacted with those shades, which you might be able to do something to with the censer. There you could interrogate this Marius and then kill him, depriving the Master of a powerful tool. Learn more of Darla so you can hunt her.
Another thing you could do is visit the crypt Giles told you of more than a week ago. Go down into the tunnels connected to it and find the meeting place marked out there. If there are any vampires there, interrogate them and kill them then follow any scents to something useful. It is questionable if it is still in use however considering the Warrior might have gone down there. The scents may not be as fresh.
While you ponder the next thing to do, you walk away from the vampiric crypt, hands clasped elegantly before you as the shadows cling close.
What do you do?
[] Go to the Restfield Cemetery, find Marius and his harem. Interrogate and kill them.
[] Go to the crypt in the Sunnydale central cemetery and find the meeting place. Interrogate and kill any vampires down there and track what scents there are for you to find.
Last night I learned to not attempt to start an update after 7:00 pm for me. Won't be doing that again!
I think we're almost to the mid point of the "season".
Vote lock will be 10:30 pm UTC, June 29th. Hopefully that means I can get the update out earlier.
