Don't like idea of letting cyclops ghost though, that sounds like it would be an issue later.

@Goldfish can any of our bombs deal with ghostly enemies? Or at least give Gorok more breathing room?

Unlikely. Alchemical stuff can sometimes seem magical, but it generally isn't, and that includes what we have available. Non-magical effects have zero chance of affecting an Incorporeal target. Even magical weapons and spells only have a 50% chance of working on any given attempt unless they have the Ghost Weapon property or inflict Force damage.

I don't like the idea of letting an enemy go free, but sometimes it's better to pick your battles, and this is one I would like to avoid if possible. We still have at least three Demons to deal with, after all. Hopefully, the Cyclops will depart now that it is no longer bound.

The cyclops didn't seem too happy with Gavhaul, it was definitely bound against its will, as we knew before.
I think we can part in peace, unless whatever magic bound him to this bottle keeps Gavhaul's last command active beyond his death.

If we kill big demon, the shadow ones are likely to run away since direct conflict isn't in their nature, especially if not in darkness and outnumbered.

I think its smarter to heal Gorok, focus kill it, and then focus on cyclopes spirit while the shadow demons are clean up.

Heck, maybe Ugor will join in after dealing with Gavhaul, and sure he has a Ghost Touch weapon since he plans to clear a undead city of dwarfs.

By daylight I don't think the Shadow Demons can outrun a Dragon, so if we can get just one of them, she has a serious chance to get the other.

Keep in mind in good light the demons can only take a single move-action, so no double-move to run, and only one shot at teleporting away, which can be hard if you have a dragon on you trying to tear you to pieces . Luckily Dragon's natural weapons always count as magic weapons, so she can hit incorporeal things at 50% damage.

-[X] Gorok retreats toward Kori and the other casters with help from Warty while Fighting Defensively, if necessary, and drinks a Cure Light Wounds potion as soon as he can do so without provoking an enemy attack. He'll drink another potion if he has it available and there is time.
-[X] Mina casts another Daylight spell. Even if the Shadow Demons manage Dispel it again, that will at least keep them occupied instead of targeting our allies.
-[X] Kori casts Cure Serious Wounds on Gorok.
-[X] Sirim telepathically communicates with the Cyclops, attempting to convince it to depart now that Gavhaul is dead.
-[X] Cob moves to Flank the Horned Demon in order to Sneak Attack it and attempt to inflict the Bewildered condition on it (-2 AC, -4 AC vs Cob's attacks).
    --[X] Sneak Attack: +14/+14 [12 + 1 (Bless) + 1 (Haste)], 1d4+6 damage [19-20/x2], +3d6 damage with Sneak Attack

Arc 8 Post 41: Battle Under Wing and Bough
Battle Under Wing and Bough

6th of Neth 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

As you rush to Gorok's side the sight of the giant looms all the more dreadfully before you, stealing and twisting light and heat away into his own form. "Be well, be whole," you intone familiar words in the ancient tongue of the People, though with passion power unfamiliar. The chest burn that would once have been wholly beyond you begins to redden at the edges and knit together, but it is still far from healed.

Without voice the giant laughs cold and ancient mockery: "Haven't you learned not to press your hands against the sword-wheels of fate, little brother?"

In answer light pours again from Mina's staff as the patch of living darkness screams its impotent rage to earth and sky, which Cob takes for a signal to leap up and swing on one of the demon master's larger horns, marking its scaled cheek with his dagger and almost taking out an eye, though the wound is already starting to close.

"If the dark spirit seeks to use my soul as leverage, kill it anyway," Gorok speaks with an eerie calm as he steps back from the giant before uncorking a potion to drink.

A needle of blue-white flame flies from the giant's single great eye and into Sylestrix's left, boiling it in her socket as she rears back in agony.

"The shadow-dabbler claimed I could prevail against a dragon, young one. I pity that you must become the object of such a lesson, but such are life's precious torments."

The dragon roars and turns her head, though not upon the one who had tormented her. She looks the demon in the eye ad unhinges her jaws to let out the chill of the void. Icicles of frozen blood cling to the demon now, its old arrogance forgotten in favor of the wrath that only thwarted malice can breed.

Giant Touch Attack ???: 27, 25 (Crit, Confirm) -> Sylestrix takes 72 (Damage) -> Now at 33/105
Horned Demon Reflex: 1d20+8 -2 (Shaken) = 12 (Failure)
Horned Demon takes 27 -10 (Resistance) = 17 Damage -> at 5/125

Darkness falls again as the demon looks to Leontas with a hideous bloody smile and raises up its wounded hand, ripping him from his mount in a grip unseen and then bringing him down on Gorok with all his might and all the weight of an armored man transformed into no more than a fiend's club. You wince in sympathy as your friend's shoulder snaps like dry firewood, but somehow, burned and broken, he's still standing. Only just did everyone realize that fact that Gorok, holding his sword one handed, slits the demon's belly open in one vicious motion. Organs in shapes that shouldn't be spill out onto the frozen grass and the light of hate goes out in the demon's eyes.

Leontas' will save vs Telekinesis: 3 (Failure)
Horned Demon to Hit: 33 (Crit)
Confirm?: 16 (No)
Gorok takes 21 Damage -> Now at 12/62

"Lord, we can't kill ghost! Need magic!" the shout of one of the fey giants calls your attention back to your last remaining and still all-too dangerous enemy. Lambent flame still bubbles in his great eye.

Moving on instinct you summon a blinding flash in his eye and it seems to work... but it also gets it looking your way. You are no dragon to be able to withstand the fire, of that you're sure.

"Goodbye, little brother. May your sight be clearer next time."

Wind soft and insistent rises at your side, old words of protection carried upon it, Mina's words, blowing out the needle of flame as a child's breath blows out a candle.

Reflex vs Blinding: 1d20+5 = 24 (Success)
Psychic Phantom takes
14 Damage -> Now at 17/52
Mina Counter-spell (DC 17): 1d20+6 = 23 (Success)

Before you can gather enough of your wits to weave another spell, before even Cob and his lightning quick dagger can be put to work, the dragon had her vengeance. If the ghost has substance, that substance is torn asunder.

No sooner had their master perished that the shade demons scattered before the light of vengeance. As to the hounds, thankfully they do not seem to have outlasted Gavhaul's fate.

On the field all is quiet, save the ragged breathing of the wounded, and the groans and curses of a otherwise bright-eyed Leontas. "That was a big bastard." He pokes a boot at the horned and befanged head. "Company to attention! We still have demons out there!" he turns to the still wounded dragon: "You need some healing supplies?"

"Yes, though I fear mine eye is quite beyond such small magics. Be not troubled though." You get the distinct sense that Sylestrix is saying this more because she feels it is expected of her than because she means it. "The battle was won and a great foe slain before he could taint these lands. If it please thee, inform the mortals who dwell near that I mean no harm..."

Other than the fact that she had stolen their treasure, she means, you think very, very quietly. Though Sirim does not seem to be listening in.

How do you explain what just transpired to the people of Fusil?

OOC: Sorry this took so long guys, it was a lot of rolling and a lot of strategizing. For one I had the dragon full attack the demon before realizing that DR 10 made that unworkable, then I had to figure out that telekinesis trick and just what a man in armor would weigh as 'weapons' go. Hopefully it makes for an interesting battle at the end of it.

It was! And my what a few close shaves....

I will say Sylestrix may wish to take the healing regardless.

Can heal damaged eyes if they are not "lost." So depending on how bad it is...?

Sadly she is going to need regenerate, there is no longer any 'eye' left in that socket, it was all boiled away by the 72 fire damage. If she were any less tough it would have gone into her brain and killed her.

Gorok, you just got the old "hit a motherfucker with another motherfucker" treatment. You got the last laugh, though!

Whew, I'm glad we got him healed up some before taking that hit.

Sucks about Sylestrix's eye, but she's a Dragon. Even down an eye, her senses are ridiculously good, and if anyone can ever save up enough money to pay for a Regenerate spell, it's a Dragon.

The sooner we start laying the groundwork for why Gavhaul had to die, the better off we'll be. Also best to get Sylestrix good PR around here ASAP.

Pity that the Shadow Demons escaped. That's... annoying.

So: I want to trade for some of Sylestrix's baubles - at least one of the armours for Mina, maybe some goggles, and also the reading prism because I like it a lot.
Apart from that I think we want our pay for killing the Lord of Veils, and to report back tot he Pathfinders that Gavhaul will not be getting those items, so they should pay us. Because he died to a stray attack while we were trying to knock him out for an exorcism while possessed by a shadow demon?

Or he died in the group combat with the big demon? Possibly also while possessed?
Or perhaps 'twas Urgor who did the deed (again; while possessed. again).

Argument: In having multiple copies of things, it makes each one slightly less unique - a second instance of a given item is less valuable than the first, by some metrics - which is why I hope you might like replacing some duplicates with a new unique item (the sorcerer's robe)

Ghosts in general tend not to die easily, can we check on the glass that held the Cyclops bound for Gavhaul?

Aside from that, great fight, lucky finish. If the phantom had shot his last spell at anyone but the toughest thing on the field, we'd have lost someone.

To be fair the dragon was also the one who could deal the most damage on the field. He was not trying to just kill someone, he was trying to win.

"couldn't"?

Not sure what there is to explain. Went against a dragon, got killed. Many such cases.
Also there were demons and fey and ghosts and aberrations, and I think the villagers will be more interested in none of thee things coming to trouble them again than in getting their treasures back.

Oh yeah, the head goes to our collection. Can't break tradition.

What was the soul enslaving the demon used? Does it go away on killing the 'master'? Are there other methods of dispelling it?
The last of Sylestrix' rolls is misssing, it just says she killed the ghost, but with what? Magic?

It's an ability Horned Demons have. If they use it on someone, the target is penalized. The soul gets yoinked and the Demon benefits from a 12th level Heal spell (heals 120 HP, and a lot of other stuff) if they kill the affected target.

With the Demon dead, however, Gorok is safe.

Dragons have a crapload of Natural Attacks, and all of them are considered magical for the purpose of overcoming Damage Reduction, hitting Incorporeal targets, etc. The Cyclops was pretty heavily damaged, so even with the 50% chance for any one of her attacks to hit it, it would have only taken one or two landing to do the deed.
