Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

I never went far into the rules of Pathfinder, but I looked up the WItch's class now that we need specific spells, and...
If Pepper is a figment of Mina's imagination, how can he serve as a familiar if it is explicitly stated figments can not? A house rule?

For that matter, how did he escort the kids when it says a figment can't stray farther than 100 feet from its master?

Houserule, he can leave her side and serve as a focus to her magic for reasons that have to do with how she got him. That is something you guys will have a chance to check out if you want.

Very slow morning at work today, so I've had some extra time to kill. Here's what I've got in mind for preliminary level up plans for everyone.

Kori finally gets 3rd level spells this level up. That comes with a couple automatic bonus spells, a new Dark Secrets spell, and a regular spell. Shadow Enchantment is a no brainer for his Dark Secrets spell. That will finally start the process of getting Kori the various Shadow spells that will significantly increase his versatility. I've got Channel Vigor slotted in for his regular spell. It's one of the best buff spells in the game, including being able to boost his Bluff and Intimidate skill checks by +6.

[] Kori Level Up
-[] Class: +1 Oracle
-[] Favored Class Bonus: +1 Hit Point
-[] Skills (6 points): +1 Bluff, +1 Intimidate, +1 Perception, +1 Sense Motive, +1 Spellcraft, +1 Stealth
-[] Background Skills (2 points): +1 Knowledge (History), +1 Lore (Azlanti History)
-[] Spells:
--[] Cantrip: Detect Poison
--[] 3rd Level: Channel Vigor, Cure Serious Wounds (B), Deeper Darkness (B), Shadow Enchantment (DS)

Not much new stuff for Cob this level, but he does get another Rogue Talent. Considering that he's got insane stealth skills and a party with three different members able to cast Invisibility, Surprise Attack seems like a perfect talent for him. It's not always going to apply, but any time we can initiate a surprise combat round he's going to be doing a ton of damage, especially if he's Hasted first.

[] Cob Level Up
-[] Class: +1 Unchained Rogue
-[] Favored Class Bonus: +1 Hit Point
-[] Skills (10 points): +1 Acrobatics, +1 Appraise, +1 Disable Device, +1 Escape Artist, +1 Knowledge (Dungeoneering), +1 Perception, +1 Sleight of Hand, +1 Stealth, +2 Climb
-[] Background Skills (2 points): +1 Craft (Alchemy), +1 Knowledge (Engineering)
-[] Rogue Talent: Surprise Attack

Not much happening for Gorok this level up besides finally getting access to his second iterative attack. He does get his next bonus combat style feat, though, and it's a pretty good one. Furious Focus will let him hit more reliably while using Power Attack. I've also got him retraining his Weapon Focus from Axes to Heavy Blades.

[] Gorok Level Up
-[] Class: +1 Ranger
-[] Favored Class Bonus: +1 Hit Point
-[] Skills (6 points): +1 Climb, +1 Knowledge (Nature), +1 Perception, +1 Ride, +1 Stealth, +1 Survival
-[] Background Skills (2 points): +1 Handle Animal, +1 Profession (Hunter)
-[] Feat: Furious Focus (B)
--[] Retrain: Weapon Focus (Axes) >>> Weapon Focus (Heavy Blades)
-[] Warty
--[] Skill Point (1 point): +1 Swim
--[] New Trick: Work

It's a good level up for Mina. New spells and a new Hex. For the Hex, I've got Fortune slotted in for now. It's a helpful one I can see us getting a lot of everyday use out of.

For her new spells, Lightning Bolt is a good AoE damage spell, something our party currently lacks. Few creatures resist Electricity, so there shouldn't be too many instances of it being useless. She could learn another new 3rd level spell, but I've got See Invisibility slotted in instead. We need to be able to bypass Invisibility more reliably, and she can teach the spell to Sirim as well. I'll feel a lot better once they both have it prepared. She also gets Speak with Dead as a bonus spell. That is a surprisingly useful spell to have.

[] Mina Level Up
-[] Class: +1 Witch
-[] Favored Class Bonus: +1 Hit Point
-[] Skills (6 points): +1 Knowledge (Arcana), +1 Knowledge (Religion), +1 Knowledge (The Planes), +1 Spellcraft, +1 Stealth, +1 Use Magic Device
-[] Background Skills (2 points): +1 Knowledge (History), +1 Knowledge (Nobility)
-[] Hex: Fortune
-[] New Spells:
--[] 2nd Level: See Invisibility
--[] 3rd Level: Lightning Bolt, Speak with Dead (B)
-[] Pepper
--[] Skill Point (3 points): +1 Knowledge (The Planes), +1 Perception, +1 Stealth

For Sirim's new spells, Marionette Possession is kinda niche, but really helpful now that we need to de-Possess Urgor. It also has great synergy with Sirim's Incorporeal status, allowing him to temporarily inhabit his target, unlike regular casters who leave their body behind. He can teach Mina the spell, too.

Magic Circle Against Evil is good to have (as situations like the one we just got done with illustrate), but not one I would want to dedicate one of Kori's very limited spells to. It's also a good fit for Sirim, since he has amazing maneuverability and doesn't really take up any space, so the AoE can be used to maximum effect.

[] Sirim Level Up
-[] Class: +1 Wizard
-[] Favored Class Bonus: +1 Hit Point
-[] Skills (6 points): +1 Bluff, +1 Diplomacy, +1 Knowledge (Arcane), +1 Knowledge (Religion), +1 Spellcraft, +1 Stealth
-[] Background Skills (2 points): +1 Knowledge (History), +1 Knowledge (The Planes)
-[] New Spells
--[] 3rd Level: Magic Circle Against Evil, Marionette Possession

This is the best level up for Kori. Really nice for all he can do, and where his build starts to shine. I like all that shadow evocation, conjuration and enchantment line of spells.

[ :V ] try to get it to leave by pointing out that, as Chaotic creatures; demons shouldn't be able to posess people cause Possession is 9/10s of the law

Yes, but if you were to break its anchor while it was still inside the dwarf it could hang on, which would imply that it thinks you can break said anchor relatively easily
Iiiinteresting. Can we detect thoughts on ghosts? Try and find out where its anchor is?

Thought I've been having on and off since we saw that robot angel in the catacombs, could we get a construct body for Sirim? This spell would certainly seem to help with that, assuming it affects constructs. Can it?

[X] Interrogate the demon on the spot, search the shrine, see if you can put an end to this tonight
-[X] Kori uses Detect Thoughts on the Demon while it is unconscious before we wake it up for questioning. As for the interrogation, Urgor and Kori will focus on that while Sirim and Cob search the shrine. Mina will standby, looking after Gorok while keeping her Evil Eye Hex (penalty to saves and skills) applied to the Demon.

I doubt we'll get much from the unconscious Demon.
Detect Thoughts is only surface thoughts, so unless he dreams something interesting, it's worthless.

If Kori learns the Shadow Projection Revelation at 7th level, he and Sirim will be able to temporarily trade places. He can become an Incorporeal Shadow and Sirim can pilot Kori's body.
Shadow Projection (Su): You infuse your life force and psyche into your shadow, causing it to separate from your body and act as an independent creature. This ability functions as shadow projection except as follows. Your shadow has the outsider type and the phantom subtype instead of the undead type. As a result, this ability does not have the evil descriptor and your shadow cannot be turned or affected as undead (though it can be affected as an outsider). You can use this ability for a number of hours per day equal to half your oracle level. These hours don't need to be consecutive, but they must be spent in 1-hour increments. Your shadow's hit points are not replenished between uses, although your shadow can be healed in the same manner as any other outsider. When this ability isn't in use, any healing done to you also heals your shadow for an equal amount. You must be at least 7th level to choose this revelation.
Kori's Shadow will be quite a bit more combat effective than Sirim's Smokeshade form, so there could be times when it would be worth the trouble of swapping roles.

This ameliorates some of the problem inherent to using the Shadow Projection ability, since Kori won't just be leaving his body lying around, vulnerable to anything that might come along if unguarded. Also, Sirim could make full use of his Diplomacy skill while piloting Kori's body.

As long as Kori keeps concentrating on it, the effect will remain active even after the Demon wakes up. It can still resist each round if it makes a Will saving throw, but it doesn't hurt to have the effect in place beforehand.

Forgot to vote, and good level plan @Goldfish.

Do you think it's worth it to lower the demon's mental defenses by making it consume Love in Idleness? I find it unlikely we'll find a better use for it than 'truth serum' for interrogation purposes.

Wouldn't help here, since that is a poison effect and Swaithes are immune. Good idea, though.

Mina will, however, be debuffing it's saving throws with her Evil Eye Hex, so that should help some.

Arc 7 Post 56: Of Blessings Accursed
Of Blessings Accursed

26th of Lamashan 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

Warty will not leave Gorok's side, though as Mina gets the bedroll down the slurk seems to understand what is going on if not why and settles down into a large vibrating pillow for his friend while Cob and Sirim go back down into the old 'basement'.

Time to deal with the demon.

Up close the creature is no less hideous for beyond the appearance of an emaciated grey skilled goblin, there is something wrong behind the hollows of its eyes, windows on a greater evil... what you are about to meet. In slumber its will parts like a curtain into a place of knives, each thought a jagged hateful thing, poisoned at the root.

Swaithe Will Save: Automatic Failure (Unconscious)
Akorian Sense Motive to Make Sense of the Demon's Thoughts (DC 16/21/25/31): 1d20+13+1 (Guidance) = 34 (Critical Success)

It remembered squirming its way through the guts of the dying goat, the pain and blood nourishing its new life. It remembered the face of the old priestess drawn with horror and doubt, it hated her weakness more than it did other things. But the old one had wanted the gifts of the Mother; healing, herd-growth, and many-kills-hunting. She had been willing to pay for all her weeping and weakeness, but there were no other children of the Mother nearby to call forth and show the clawless humans stronger seed.

It remembered the apprentice-girl with her broom. Lily was her name and they mocked her for the Gift of the Mother since they said she was not beautiful, but to the demon she smelled of green-grass poison, never a more fitting name. It remembered the curses and screams, the mortals bearing fire, ungrateful for Mother-Gifts. The girl held a hand over her mouth as they hid and would not let her curse the hounds and horses.

The flames leapt high, the screams traveled far. It could smell the poison in her blood growing and it was good. They would go into the woods and brew curses, breed Beasts-of-War for Mother to feast on the flesh of the weak humans, thought the demon, a simpler pleasure of its twisted kin. How it wished that's how it would have gone.

But the mortals left the village by the water, moved their hearths to another place, nearer the road where the soldiers would come. Sister Lilly said then be subtle, in lying-form approach. Do not the beasts of Mother take the colors of the dirt and the leaves to get close to their pray? Give them blessings still so they would not live again, so that there would be more of them to make-scream.

Make their children hers.

Take their children.

So the demon's mind returns to the the evening when it had tried to tempt the shepherdess Essa off the path as it had done many times before, not to take her and torture her and pluck out her eyes for all it would have liked to, but to bring her to the woods, to her grandmother, to her coven sisters.

You blink away the vision, the shimmering heat of the world unnaturally bright compared to the ash-grey demon sight of memory. "It's working with a group it thinks of her coven sisters, and there's someone called Lilly who started it. Now they seem to be... blessing the villagers, but also stealing their children. I'm not sure how welcome those blessings are, some of the things the fiend thinks of as 'gifts' would get a derro clapping."

"It was a cult of... Lamashtu. Not like we can draw her attention anymore after what we did to their wolves," Mina mutters

Urgor grunts as though he'd been kicked at the words and for a moment his eyes glint red with the light of distant fires. He burns his fingers grabbing for the tea-kettle and gulps it down hot. He drops it... "I can still feel it. I can steel feel it in me, but it's chained for now. Thank you. Oath to sky and stone and to Him Who Cast the Stars from His Forge, I'll repay you for this."

With a somewhat uneasy nod, not knowing what to do with so much sincerity, you return your attention to Mina, who continues: "It sounds like the cult grew out of a desire to expand their herds, but then they got discovered somehow and this 'Lilly', whose still around, took a more snake-in-the-grass approach. Though why the villagers wouldn't notice missing children...?"

Mina Knowledge (Religion) (DC 20): 1d20+13 = 23 (Success)
Urgor Will Save: 1d20+5+1 (Bless) +1 (Resistance) +2 (Meditation Tea) = 25 (Success)

Possession Suppressed for 24 Hours

"The demon thinks the shepherd girl we met, Essa, is kin to 'Sister Lilly'. That is how they grow the... coven?" You end the word on a question, since you had only heard it in demon-speech from the fiend's thoughts.

"Changeling children." Mina pales. "I think the wolves confused me for one of them. Remember, it said: 'Stripling, wearing skin you have no right to. We will teach you what your grandmothers' failed to! We will show you Her love!'"

"Where do the dead children fit in though, and the shadow-fiends?" Urgor asks. "Ken ye ask it again?" He taps on the shoulder of the demon with the tip of his boot.

"That's not how it works. I don't get to ask questions, its mind just happened to drift to its summoning since it was here in the place of it and it feared we would kill it, sending it back."

He nods grimly, gets some water from his water-skin, then puts his axe under the demon's chin and splashes water all over it to wake it.

"That's not going to work." Mina reaches out a healing hand, though she draws it back before all the light can settle into its flesh.

"Why did you work with the shadow fiends?" you immediately ask.

Surprising no one, the demon starts screeching, promising horrible fates to all present, most of which involve Warty in some way, with a special loathing to Mina, who has it snared under a curse of her own. But as it's spewing bile its mind is unwarded, and the answers float to the top. The 'dark ones' had paid it with its beautiful new wand and the chance to hurt the caravan's horses... paid it to reveal where it took the bodies of the 'failures', girls who would not turn to join the coven and boys who would not serve. The demon worshipers did not kill them, but sent them out into the wilderness alone to go home for spurring their 'love'. None of them ever made it home, the demon had seen to that, and the demon had seen to that by driving them away from road or water until they died in the wilderness to be dragged back to the caves.

Swaithe Heals 10 Damage
Swaithe Will Save: 1d20+4 -2 (Evil Eye) = 11 (Failure)

Cob and Sirim come out of the pit together, a set of stone tablets clutched to the goblin's chest. "At least the fool summoning demons down there had the wit to write on something fireproof," the wizard grumbles. Though he admits he only had the time to glance over the spells since he did not want to risk any more 'rusted trash coming down on Cob's head'.

Finding Traps: 1d20+17 = 31 (Success)
Disabling Scithe Trap (DC 22): 20, 24 (Failure, Success)
Finding Treasure (DC 19): 1d20+ 15 = 32 (Success)
Reading the Code Sirim Linguistics(DC 20): 1d20+5 = 16 (Failure)

Gained Demon Binder's Stone Spellbook (Spells can be coppied once the Code is cracked)
Gained
Wand of Dispel Magic (26 Charges)

Mina quickly summarizes what you had learned, ending on: "We can't leave Occarin at the mercy of these... these monsters. We've got to find and deal with them."

"We should inform them, but the caravan grows more distant with every breath and..." Sirim looks over at the still unconscious Gorok. "We are in no state to contest several fresh spellcasters who may be expecting us. Your own familiar, Mina, may already be dead at their hands if they have spies in the village, which given the pattern of seeding it with their kin seems likely. How much could Pepper reveal about us under torture or interrogation?"

"No..." Mina shakes her head. "Pepper's smart, he'd have gotten away if there was trouble."

He does not argue further, but he is far from swayed by Mina's faith in her familiar.

What does Kori think the party should do after sending the demon back to whence it came?

[] Warn the village then be on your way

[] Wait for Gorok to heal, recover spells, and then go after this 'coven'. You know where the caravan is going, and they are planning to stay a day or two in the provincial capital of Carpenden

[] Leave at once to rejoin the caravan

[] Write in

OOC: That was a very well placed crit from Kori.

Oh boy, keep getting sidetracked by bullshit indeed.

And the village can't be totally ignorant of this, since it seems like this has been happening for a while. Personally think we have done all we can reasonably do since with Swaithe gone coven will have a harder time getting access to children.

So just give them warning, pick up Pepper, and leave, but that is just me.

[X] Warn the village, then be on your way

Yup. Blessings for a child gone missing, assumed to become a part of the coven to give the village more blessings. I'd be surprised people didn't suspect what was going on.

And now that the fate of some of the missing children is revealed the arrangement wouldn't work anymore.

We are no closer to understanding what the ghost anchor is, are we? Could the answer be in the book Sirim got?

Could be, the thing is definitely magical, might be unholy
