Arc 3 Post 33: Flash in the Dark
Flash in the Dark

26 of Arodus 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

Closing your eyes tightly against the flash you know is coming you draw not a dagger, but a small clay jar and hurl it into the middle of the war party. Pandemonium assaults your ears; cries of shock, of pain and anger, and above it all a hiss of anger like air escaping from a shattered crypt. The two archers, which had in their folly been standing together, stagger into one another even as one of the Whisper Foots sinks their blade blindly into the back of one's knee. Two others seems to have struck themselves with their own weapons to banish the pain of sudden dazzling blue illumination, for all the good it does them.

Fungal Stun Vial Used

Both Dark Stalkers are Stunned
Four Dark Creepers are Confused:

  • One Harms Himself -> Takes 1 Damage -> Now at 18/19
  • Two Do Nothing
  • Three Attack Dark Stalker One -> Does 6 Damage -> Dark Stalker One Now at 33/39
  • Four Harms Himself -> Takes 2 Damage -> Now at 17/19
Two Dark Stalkers are Dazzled (-1 to Attack Rolls and Sight based Perception rolls)

For the light had done far more than simply blind and confuse, it had pierced the darkness that shrouded the iruxi. So did Gorok rake his claws along the chest of the hunter, ripping rag-lichen and staining it red, and thus did a spear of one of his fellows find its mark. The others, unused perhaps to this fight and sudden flashes, see their weapons turned aside. Yet as the hunter stumbles away from the point of the bloodied spear a small figure peels itself from the rock wall to his left, and a very special dagger clanks out to slash behind his knee and at last one of your foes at least collapses.

Dark Stalker One takes 33 Damage -> Now at 0/39 (Unconscious)

"You, skin-stained wretch," the winged thing turns on Cob, voice shuddering with desire and anticipation: "The ring, where did you put the ring?"

"Ngh..." he struggles for a moment against the command, but even mumbling from having bitten his tongue the power of the thing forces an honest answer out of him: "Kori'sh got ith!"

Cob Will Save: 1d20+3 = 5 (Failure)

The small bag at your belt suddenly hangs heavy as lead. "Shit, stone-scraping worm shit!" you curse bitterly. It's better than trembling at the knees, after all.

"Deliver him to the Lady's Embrace and cut Her treasure from his flesh!" The words are spoken in the tongue of the People, clear for all to hear, though at the moment only the pair of Whisper Foots who had not been caught fully in the circle of light can move to obey. With the cave wall at your back they come from the left and right, bone weapons pale in hands stained black with soot, the better to blend into the darkness to the eyes of burnlanders.

What do you do?

[] If the ring is the prize maybe you can draw the thing away from its caligini servants. Cast a spell to make your escape and retreat towards the middle of the cave where Mina and Iolda wait

[]
Trap the winged horror in place, you can deal with the rest. If enough fall the rest will flee

OOC: Good guess on what they want @Tomcost.

If the winged monster is a shadow demon (which I'm not entirely sure it is) then would it even cast a shadow for us to trap it in? And would it be able to hide in the shadow it's now stuck to?
"Do shadow demons have a shadow?" seems like one of those "does water count as being wet?" kind of questions

I think this thing is either something undead or an aberration

Can you give us a rough idea of where everyone is, @DragonParadox?

How far away is Mina? How close to Kori are the two Whisper Foots? How is the winged creature positioned in relation us and it's allies?

I don't think Blurred Movement is the spell we should use here. It's not a bad option, but the situation makes Protection from Evil much more appealing, IMO. The +2 bonus to AC and saving throws could help a lot, plus the monster just started throwing around Mind-affecting effects and now it knows Kori has the ring. PfE not only makes him harder to hit and more able to resist hostile magic, it also protects him from mind control shit.

Mina's spell should at least nail the monster and Dark Stalker, but could get some Creepers, too, if we're lucky. She's got a good chance of Blinding the Darkfolk, since their Will saves are pretty low.

Cob is going for the Dark Stalker first because it's Stunned, possibly for one more round, and very likely Blinded (+2 Will save vs Mina's DC 16 Glitterdust). Dark Stalkers can also be really dangerous if given a chance. Meanwhile, the monster almost certainly has a much better chance to resist being Blinded and is thus less likely to be good Sneak Attack fodder.

We don't know exactly what we're facing yet, or if this is the full scope of the ambush, so I'm wary of using the Elemental yet. Should probably wait at least a round or two to see how things play out.

[X] A Measured Response
-[X] Mina targets the winged creature and as many of its allies as she can manage to hit, especially the remaining Dark Stalker, with her Glitterdust spell.
-[X] Cob moves to Sneak Attack the Dark Stalker while it is still Stunned, and possibly Blinded, after Mina casts her spell.
-[X] Kori casts Protection from Evil on himself and retreats toward the middle of the cave.
-[X] Iolda targets the winged creature with a Magic Missiles spell.
-[X] Gorok leads Warty and the other Iruxi in a charge against the ambushers, seeking to further thin out their numbers while they are Blinded, Confused, or otherwise occupied. Gorok warns them not to kill any unconscious ambushers if possible, as Darkfolk tend to explode upon death.

I was going to point out the very same thing with PfE

I have the feeling this thing is an undead, but I can't pinpoint what exactly.

[X] Goldfish

We should also get all the halflings to start hurling rocks at the attackers. Something to think about for the next ambush

As I see this, Creepers are farily harmless when compared to Dark Stalkers. If we manage to down the other Stalker, then the Creepers won't really do much, as long as we keep them occupied, and we can focus on the goth butterfly.
