Chapter Nineteen
I could not harm Rin. Caster could not use her Rule Breaker. Sakura was dead alongside Ruler. Shiro could still strike at Caster or at me. Going by threat order, there was a very specific 'logic' to uphold in these circumstances.
First of all, one had to deal with the most lethal instrument available to my enemy.
In this case, it was Archer's arm.
Rin's mouth agape expression soon turned into a pale and wordless shriek as my hands ripped away Shiro's 'borrowed' limb, my wicked smile second only to the expression of pure glee that shone across my features.
This was madness.
And I relished and bathed in the feeling with the full strength at my disposal.
Shiro's scream was not as wordless, but definitely high-pitched even as I swatted away the limb, crushing it in various spots to prevent any 'on the fly' re-attachment.
I threw Shiro on the ground next, knocking her out as the air left her lungs and the pain blinded her senses.
Avalon within her body was meaningless without a Saber Lily nearby, so it was only my mercy in halting the blood flow that saved her.
The time it took for me to stem the wound was enough for Rin to recover her senses. Caster, meanwhile, observed.
"Well then," I growled. "Time to have a nice chat."
I smiled towards Rin, "Your sister is dead. Caster is the last servant remaining. I have knocked Shiro's ability out. And before you can order my death...know that the Caster Servant is in fact Medea of Colchis, the betrayer. The moment I die, she will kill you for knowing her true name and identity," I chuckled deeply. "On the other hand, if you aid me in killing her, seven servants will have died during this war, and this will open up a straight path to the Root through the Holy Grail within my body." I could feel the thrumming energies of the Grail already brimming, ready to make any wish come true -within the limits of the World.
I grinned towards Rin. "You can make your father's wish come true, and win the Holy Grail War and reach the Root together with me. All you need to do...is not stop me from killing Caster."
"Sakura's...dead," Rin whispered. The short bark of laughter that followed next was accompanied with the girl's cheeks becoming wet with tears. "At the most important moment-things screwed themselves up once more. This is really a curse, isn't it?"
I shrugged. "Curse or not curse, I don't honestly care. You have nothing left to live for in this world, and a chance at making your father's wish come true. Pick your poison and drink it, because I," as I said that, I pointed at Caster, "Have someone to bring down a few pegs."
"Oh my," Caster smiled, her mantle flapping in the wind. "What strange manner of servant-and you would be Berserker?"
My expression didn't change as I smiled up towards Caster, "Well, technically speaking Berserker is merely an 'addition' that is granted to whichever other class of Servant one wishes. Hence one could summon a Saber class servant and tackle 'Berserker' atop it, making him a Berserker and allowing for a Saber to be summoned by someone else. As things stand, I am more inclined to consider myself an Avenger."
I licked my lips with my tongue, "Boy how much I missed talking."
"I preferred when you only said 'Hate'," Rin said dryly.
She clenched both of her hands. "The world is just another word for the things you value around you," Rin acquiesced. "And the things I value, I've had them since birth. It was just a childish dream, a selfish desire that should have remained hidden in the box of toys. Very well, Avenger, I thank you for waking me up from this silly dream." She turned to face Caster, fire in her eyes. "I've decided to have you eliminated. You're an eyesore, you annoy me, and I hate the way you look. You're like some backwoods hag with that purple robe of yours."
"And here I was thinking I would make it painless," Caster's lips curled in disgust as her mantle widened in the air, allowing for hundreds of magic circles to appear. "Die then, Rain of Light!"
The high thaumaturgy equal to a bombing raid with each beam capable of disintegrating a servant's body shot out with terrifying speed and strength, their might and power only equaled by the split second decision of Rin to utilize the years of her magical reserves stored within her jewels.
"Hold her there," I snapped, my body pulsing as I slammed both hands on the ground letting the echo ripple throughout it. I would have expected Kuzuki Souichirou to be outside, dealing with Rin and Shiro. If he wasn't, then it meant he could only be inside the house. The tendrils of cursed mud shot out like bullets from my fingers, drilling their way beneath the ground to avoid being intercepted by Caster.
The moment they emerged past her and within the temple's inner rooms, I burst apart in liquid and followed through the already dug canal straight into the heart of Caster's workshop.
Caster barrage against Rin ceased abruptly as she spun to deliver her attention towards me in full, but I was already rushing ahead, my mind set on a single person standing within range of sight of the battlefield -as was the proper thing for an assassin.
I had left Rin unguarded, and so he rushed forth towards her like I had expected him to do.
The ground he walked on was no longer stable however, but a secretly cracked ground that was frail to the touch. Souichirou's first step on the deadly ground made him lose his balance, and the cursed mud that hid beneath burned upwards obeying my command.
I had baited the assassin out, and even as Caster turned once more -trying to move to save her Master- I jumped on the temple's rooftop, and from there rushed straight for the finishing line.
The finishing line being Caster's back.
My mouth opened wide as my fangs were bared together with my claws, the wicked grin of a malicious beast a permanent fixture on my face as Caster didn't even turn around -too slow- as she was gripped by her back and pushed down. 'Fallen from grace' as she was, she impacted face first against the trapped ground, skewers of cursed mud emerging from beneath at my silent command.
Her body convulsed and tried to scream, but the mud silenced her screams. The brutality of the act was only second to the actual need to ensure it was over as fast as possible, and so my right hand clenched even tighter around the neck, finishing the job quickly and neatly.
As the final servant of the Holy Grail War died and dispersed, I reabsorbed the cursed mud and stepped out of the shattered dirt.
"Congratulations, Rin," I said, clapping my hands in an inside-joke replica of Shinji's 'Congratulations' at the end of Evangelion. "You won. Now make a wish."
Rin looked down at her last Command Seal, and then at me.
"How am I going to prove I won the Holy Grail War to the Magus Association after everything that happened?" Rin said with a half nervous chuckle escaping her lips. "Well, Avenger...how about you cough out the Grail?"
"Rin," I sighed. "I am the Grail. The only reason I'm not a tall tower of limbs and flesh is because by my very nature, I have a trans-dimensional storage pocket that contains nearly unlimited energy. It is a part of a system theorized and devised together with Zelretch in one of the various 'runs' of this existence. Basically put: I have all the energy in the kaleidoscope-Universe, but it is locked away until determined circumstances allow for it to be unlocked-"
Rin blinked. "What."
"I ate the Grail's energy," I said flatly. "Tell me your wish and I'll make it come true. You want to reach the Root? I can punch open a path right now towards it. It's a one way trip, but hey, you earned it-"
"A Tohsaka is never indebted to anyone else!" Rin snapped hotly. "After everything that happened, you want to make me believe this is it? There's no shining light, no moment of awe and splendor-there's not even a trophy or a gold prize!"
"If you want gold you just have to ask. I'm pretty sure I can materialize permanently all the gold you might want, or trace some bills of whatever currency you desire-"
"No!" Rin snapped. "I don't want that! The Holy Grail War was supposed to bring forth some form of wonderful victory! Some...some glory! Some shining...something! Instead it ended like this?! I...I-Make it up to me!" Rin said in the end. "Right here and right now, Kagayaku Emiya, make it up to me!"
I blinked. "And how would you expect me to do that? Specify your wish, Rin."
"You being so damn familiar doesn't help me," Rin grumbled, crossing her arms in front of her chest. "Anyway..." Rin blinked. "Familiar."
"Uh?"
"I've decided," Rin nodded. "My wish for the Holy Grail! My wish for having won! Since I've won, I should bring home the cup, no? Well, you're a strange cup, but you'll do-"
"Wait a moment Rin-"
"That's my wish for the Holy Grail War! Emiya Kagayaku, become my familiar!"
I sighed as I stared at her with a flat gaze of 'seriously?'.
"You realize there are Magus who wished to reach the Root by winning this war that died because they couldn't?" I began, only for Rin to shake her head.
"I wanted to win the war to prove to my father's memory that I had grown as a Magus. I came into the war prepared to die, and not really having a wish that I desired. My childish dreams died when you ended Sakura's life. She's gone and you can't bring her back. All that's left for me here in Fuyuki is my old mansion, but I don't want to keep it. I could wish for your death, but you'd simply be satisfied with having won the Grail War. I guess since you already wished once to keep on fighting, you are always eager for one more fight rather than one less-"
"Concerning that, it's a misunderstanding-"
Rin's shoulders rose slightly as the girl bit her lips. "It doesn't matter!" she screamed in the end. "You have to pay me back for everything you've put me through! And I'm going to keep this command seal as guarantee against you! It will be my proof of ownership. If you try anything funny-of any kind-I will use it!"
I pinched the bridge of my nose. "And what would you wish anyway? There's nothing you could wish that could be worse than-"
Rin's face turned scarlet.
I stared at her very, very warily.
"No," I said calmly.
"It was in the memories," Rin whispered. "You have a very...delicate view of-"
"No."
"As your master-"
"I will do anything you wish," I said with the utmost calm, like a man in the process of disarming a mine. "I will kill, save, cook, clean, whatever you wish for...but you will not even mention that."
"Then..." Rin swallowed thickly. "We have a deal."
"You sure?" I murmured back, "Because whatever you pledged to Shiro-"
"Oh...I lied," Rin shrugged. "There was no way I was going to pledge my family crest. I just made a show with a few lights and she believed it."
I stared at Rin.
Rin looked back at me.
A chuckle escaped my lips.
A snort left Rin's twitching lips.
My shoulders shook, my eyes watering from sheer amusement. Rin's arms crossed in front of her stomach, her shoulders shaking slightly more than mine.
We both began to laugh louder than before.
Even as the city of Fuyuki burned in the background. Even as Shiro's lost arm disappeared in thin smoke. Even as Shiro's one-armed form twitched, still alive but breathing hard on the ground. Even as the thousands of souls I had condemned to death screamed in the background of my head.
Even then...
I laughed it all off.
I was Emiya Kagayaku.
There was a whole world waiting for me.
Truly, the world wasn't ready.
