Keep the pressure up, don't give him time to restock and relax.

He may have set up some traps to cover his retreat, but there's only so much you can do to trap, well - the entirety of London.

Assassin is easier to eliminate and not having to worry about his specific talents anymore will be rather nice.

Now the dust and spray has died down, you get to see the actual face behind the mask; broken arrogance in his gray-blue eyes, under what was some quite well kept hair, short, straight and ash-blonde. There's a clean, well-kept mustache above his mouth, blood trickling from a corner as he bites down upon it, but there's no sign of a beard. He's not that old, before thirty if you were to guess, and he wouldn't be unattractive...
His voice sounds much different from how it did before. More much refined.
I knew that countenance and mannerism from anywhere. A reworked Assassin Moriarty, before he became the Napoleon of Crime.

It is with regret in my heart that this is to be done but Moriarty is sure to pose a problem. He needs taking out, and quickly.

And that's a unanimous decision to hunt down Assassin

048- Desparation
-Chase Assassin.

"Assassin's hurt!- We're chasing him-" You yell to Izabetha as she approaches, the colder night air and lingering smoke stinging your throat as you nod to Ruler. He's not getting away- not again you're not letting him keep ambushing you anymore. You turn to Ruler, giving her a quick "Let's go"

"My thoughts exactly." Izabetha replies, starting to follow after you as Ruler picks you up in her arms, flame dancing around her feet as she takes to the sky, casually stepping off thin air as you begin to chase after Assassin. Looking back, you see Izabetha and Archer running along the roofs behind you.

Being in the air, you make good progress, only dipping below the roofline to follow the trail of bloodstains, disturbed clutter and the deadly gleams of tripwires. With each tripwire found, a lance of fire streaks down to safely detonate the lethal device left with it. Ruler's face is grim, set in a thunderous expression that only darkens with each trap she disarms as you keep up your pursuit.

"Ah- sorry for that sight, my Master" Ruler catches you staring at her expression, which quickly returns to the cheerful look she usually wears, that suits her much better than that glare. "That Assassin's the one sort of person I can never get on with- I know his type, all he does is make others suffer for his own benefit. How can anyone bloom with a strangling hand at their necks?"

She shakes her head slightly as you round a corner, a brief glimpse of a tripwire shooting out into position as an indistinct figure rounds a corner at the alley's end, heading north- towards the river. "So I can't help but hate him, even if it's such an ugly emotion."

You're silent for a moment as you redouble your pursuit, the wind fluttering your veil almost-aside as you reply. "Well- surely it's good? I mean- Kiara said that it's hard to hate- that it burns you up- so then shouldn't you not liking that hate be good?"

Ruler laughs gently at that, her voice crystal-pure, before pulling you slightly closer to her. "Thank you Mimi. For all my doubts that I'd had about her, if your time with Kiara can get you saying something so bright… Really, I'll have to apologise to her."

It's then that, at last, you catch sight of Assassin proper, having abandoned the backstreets and gone onto the main road, making a clean break for the river. But he's not getting away. With lightning speed, Ruler accelerates, the ground cratering under her thunderbolt descent, cutting Assassin off from the river. You wince slightly as the impact jars your wounded leg, bu yout quickly take up position behind Ruler, clutching the scrollcase as you ready it for use once more.

"It's over, Assassin." Ruler says firmly, lowering herself into a fighting stance. Her voice might be grim, but at the very least her expression isn't the murderous look from just before.
Assassin backs away, blood running from his mouth as he lets out a hacking cough, painting the tarmac with a red spray. He looks around frantically, desperate for an escape. But with the radiant form of Archer on the rooftops, glowing under the moonlight, and Izabetha having taken up position beside you, he finds none. Despite the heaviness of her breathing, Izabetha's still got impeccable form, the tip of her halberd pointing straight at Assassin's throat.

With no way out, Assassin glances around before sighing, standing up straight, adjusting his tie, before raising his empty hands up into the air. "Very well- I surrender."

You jolt in surprise, stepping back as Izabetha's eyes narrow, Ruler stepping forwards ominously.

"Look, you'll never get anywhere in business if you don't know when you've lost and need to negotiate, and now is one of those times. I'm outnumbered, out of disguises, and out of tricks. There's no way I'm winning now. And I'd rather not end up dead you know." Assassin says calmly, even through the strain in his voice, taking one step back to keep the distance between him and Ruler, counting off on his fingers. "I've heard enough from my Master to know the situation all of you are in with relation to the grail war. But really, I hate the man, so I'm willing to sell him out- and surely, the name of the Master from Policies would be quite useful to the Lord El-Melloi, whom I am aware of your association with. So, what do you say? Can we talk things out the civilised way?"

"Master?" Ruler asks, her voice wire-taut as she doesn't take the slightest scrap of her attention away from Assassin.

[] Take Assassin up on his offer. Any information you can get is good.
[] There's no way you can trust Assassin, especially not with how Ruler feels about him. Kill him

There's no way he's got a gambit up his sleeve, but at the same time I don't want to trigger his gambit without making a serious attempt at eliminating him.

Don't give him a chance to recoup, he needs to go now.

049- Schemer's End
-Kill Assassin

No. There's no way you can trust Assassin. It's in the name- and with how he's kept attacking you and with how Ruler feels about him, there's no chance you'd take his offer. Ruler hasn't steered you wrong so far. You'll take her judgement on Assassin- And hell, even if he wasn't lying about his Master's name, what would you do with it? Sell them for your own sake, the same as you did with Lainur? Just like how any mage would do?

No.

You can't do that. You won't.

You shake your head, your voice clear as you call out, taking the lead as Izabetha's glancing up to her Archer, mulling over Assassin's offer. "Ruler- finish it!"

"I shall." Ruler murmurs, voice calm and her expression flat, controlled. She's trying to keep her cool. To not let her hate for Assassin get in the way, to make sure she doesn't leave any opening.

Her gaze fixes on Assassin as she charges towards him, a vicious pair of punches streaking for him. He takes one on his already wounded shoulder with a desperate twist of his body, the sound of shattering bone filling the night as his ruined arm flops limply by his side, pain painting his face. The second drives into his gut, forcing him backwards with a sharp exhalation, driving him further away from the river.

His arm blurs with motion as he hurls his last broken knife- towards you and Izabetha, not at either of your servants- faster than you can react, Izabetha moves, her halberd gleaming in the moonlight as she parries the knife, sending in spinning into the sky in a harmless arc. As she catches her breath, Assassin scrambles to the side, a series of desperate dodges as he tries to avoid the lethal rain of arrows Archer is pinning him with.

"No-" Assassin gasps, a lance of flame from Ruler drilling through Assassin side, a frantic leap sideways all that stopped it from burning through his heart. "Not like this-"

"It's not going to end like this- I can't- I won't-" He gasps, frantically rolls over from where he lies on the round, the arrow from Archer that would have pierced his neck now pinning his ruined shoulder to the concrete. "I can't be out of tricks- I can't have nothing left I've got to have something else up my sleeve-."

"Even here- at [A Schemer's End]!"

With Assassin's words, for a brief moment time seems to slow as you feel mana surge from him, shaping itself with lethal intent. His one good arm emerges from behind his back, where he'd been propping himself upwards, the moonlight gleaming off the dark metal of the gun he's holding, a bulky, intimidating revolver with the briefest sparks of mana still crackling off it.

You saw him before- he didn't have it. There's no way he could have had it. But it's there. You try to shout a warning as his aim tracks across the street, Izabetha dashing in front of you, desperately shaping her blade into a shield. But there's no time, and the words die in your mouth as the deafening retort of Assassin's shot fills the night.

You stumble backwards as Izabetha's half-formed shield shatters, your ears ringing from the gunshot as something punches you in the chest. Shrapnel from her shield? Some piece of debris?

You want to ask if she's okay. You try to.

You just can't quite get yourself to say anything.

You stagger sideways, a numb weakness spreading through your body.

Your limbs shake and your scrollcase falls to the ground as you bring a hand up to your chest, touching the place you felt that impact. There's something hot there. Something sticky.

You force your gaze downwards, away from the shocked faces of everyone else, to see what you know you'll see. The deep red of blood, spilling out across your chest.

Assassin wasn't aiming for Izabetha- she'd just realised his target before you did.

He was aiming for you all along.

Your legs fail you, and you collapse to the ground, head cracking against the concrete as your vision blurs and you gasp for breath. It's hard- really hard to breathe- you just know you need to. It's all you can think of.

You see Izabetha crouched beside you, desperately covering your woung, applying pressure on it in a frantic attempt to step the flow. She's yelling something- to you? To Archer? You can't quite make it out. She's glancing back and forth between you and Archer, who's also kneeling beside you. She's thumbing the gourd at her waist- reluctantly, you think. It's hard to tell with your blurring vision, blackness creeping in from the corners of your sight. You don't know what she's saying either, as you just stare upwards at the skies.

The only thing you can hear is the heartbreaking wail that spills from Ruler's lips, seventeen-hundred years worth of grief pouring out in a single scream as she ignites, a blinding blue light filling the street, melting glass and stone and steel as two great plumes of blue flame unfurl from her shoulders, the heat so potent that even you can feel it through the numbness, a warmth that manages to reach your so-cold heart. Wrapped in this pyre, Ruler descends upon the crippled form of Assassin, tears pouring from her eyes as her talos tear into his neck, carving him apart even as the flame wraps around him, charring flesh and bone to ash and then that ash to nothing but a faint trickle of golden light

And with the last trace of Assassin vanishing in Ruler's blaze, the numbness vanishes from your body.

Only to be replaced by a pure, burning agony as if every last nerve in your body is ablaze, a hoarse, wordless scream coming from your lips as your muscles contort. It only lasts for but an hour-long second before it's too much for your mind to bear and you pass out, your consciousness diving into the cool blackness of blissful unconsciousness. With the last thing your eyes see before you pass out the shattered-glass of your circuits, flaring brighter than they ever have before.

Shining with the gleam of purest gold

1600 years of grief... Fire bird stuff...

Still not sure who she actually is...

Oh, yeah, and the agonising pain when a Servant dies?

Thaaaaaat probably means Mimi is connected to the Grail somehow. Possibly the Lesser Grail!

So that's fun times.
