-Gray answers it

As the phone rings, Gray excuses herself from the table, rushing over to the phone and picking it up. "Hello?- Ah, Flat… We're fine, why? Assassin? What happened? Are you okay?"

This isn't good. An enemy went for the other lot? Ruler's all tensed up as well.

"He's hurt?- How ba-right- just a scratch or two?. Thank goodness. I'll be right over." Grey hangs up the phone, immediately starting to rush around the room, getting herself ready to leave.

You get yourself ready as well- it's a lot quicker for you. "Look- I'll go with you."

"Thank you-" Gray gasps, tossing you a set of keys "Here- if we end up splitting up later."

She goes for the door handle, grasping for it as a voice calls out from inside her cloak? "Gray wards wards wards-AGH"

As Gray grabs the handle, a jolt of lightning zaps out, hitting her in the hand, causing her to yelp, as out from her cloak falls a… small cage with an angrily grumbling cube?

"Ah- Sorry can you sort those?" Gray goes to the sink, running her zapped hand under the sink for a bit while pointing to the carved wooden board hanging from below the handle. "Just slide it off if- you don't touch the metal it's fine."

Ruler gets there first, carelessly plucking the board off the handle, completely unfazed by the weak jolt it tries to give her.

"Thank you-" Gray finishes cooling off the burn, joining you by the door as you head out into the streets. "At least we know nobody came here if the ward hadn't gone off."

She's a bit more talkative than usual. She's got to be worried.. Though it does seem like she's starting to recentre herself as you make your way through the streets. Gray's leading the way, she obviously knows where to go.

"Sooo, what's with the talking box?" Ruler cuts in, pointing to Gray's cloak in a fairly blatant attempt to give her something else to think about. There's a muffled "BOX?" from inside the cloak.

"That's Add. He's a mystic code of sorts. He's usually louder."

"Maybe cause of all the servants going around-You, Ruler- try anything to Gray and you're going to get it ya hear me?"

"Oooh, scary box." Ruler pantomimes shock, giving a glance to Gray. You see a look of relief flit over her face as Gray gives just a little chuckle.

Eventually, after a bit of a walk and the occasional burst of meaningless conversation, you arrive at your destination; it's a much larger building right in the centre of town. It's very fancy around here; your skin crawls at just how out of place you are here. Gray goes to the buzzer, speaking into it to get the door opened. You're not at the main entrance, just a side door. She pauses at the threshold, looking back at you and Ruler.

You

[] Go in with them. You're going to have to speak with this Professor sooner or later if you're going to keep associating with Gray
[] Don't go in- it's too soon for you to feel comfortable doing this. You'll just wait outside.
[] Sort out a place to meet up with Gray later- you and Ruler will do your own thing- Specifically, sorting something for clothes; you stick out way too much in this raggy crap.

Meeting Waver isn't likely to take that long, the shopping attempt is a diversion.

017- Clothes
-Clothes

Just going into a place like this is still too much. It'd be full of mages no doubt. And hurt or not, this Professor is still titled. It's hard to think about him without getting on edge- you're just trying to not think of the L-word. You know that if you're going to keep associating with Gray you're going to need to deal with this eventually. But you're not ready yet. You can't do this right now.

"You go-" Your voice is rough-hasty. "That park nearby- be there later? This is a you thing-you get on with it."

You turn and run, leaving Gray behind, Ruler on your heels. You don't see the concerned look she gives you as you flee. After a bit of jogging, you find yourself in the park you were going to use for a meetup. You park yourself under a tree, Ruler squatting down beside you. "Sooo, any real reason for that? You didn't really need to run away there."

...Why did you do it? You don't know. You can trust Gray. She's had enough chance to screw you, and she's not done it. The rest of them… Gray trusts them, but they're mages, but Gray trusts them. But even so they might still screw you over?

"We're going to have to sort out where we stand with them, Master." Ruler sits down next to you, patting you on the shoulder. "The war won't wait for us. Friend, foe or something in between… we've got to pick soon."

"I know that!" You snap back at Ruler- ah. No you can't push yourself away from Ruler as well. You slap your cheeks. Focus. "Not like that- distance. If I can get a bit of distance between us when we do it I'll be fine. I'll be able to do it."

You almost believe it.

"Okaaaay" Ruler sounds as convinced as you feel. "We've got some time before Gray shows back up. Why not do something with it."

You give the idea a thought. It is your first full day of freedom. What do you want to do with it?

"Clothes." You're sick of wearing this crap. It doesn't fit right, it's ancient and it does nothing but make you feel like someone who doesn't belong. "Actual clothes- I won't stick out as much that way- less notice is good."

"Ooooh, yes that works." Ruler stands, pulling you up after her. "So where should we get it? Shouldn't really go steal like the food last night. Food and this is a bit different. Alllso too much attention right now."

Which means shopping. Ah. That needs money. Money which you don't have. You're going to need to ask someone for help. It can't be Gray- you don't know what bit on the intercom she used and it's a terrible idea to just buzz every button on a mages building.

Which leaves… the one person you've met, knows about you and didn't treat you like a thing.

"We're going to have to go to the church and see Kiara then."

"What? Do we have to? Are you mad?" Ruler grabs you by the shoulders. "You know she's dangerous right?"

"She's the only one outside Gray's lot who we know." You sigh. "We don't have any money after all what else am I supposed to do?"

"Fiiine. Just keep an eye out for her if she tries to mess with you again."

It takes you a bit of time to cross back to Kiaras chapel. But eventually, you find yourself in front of its doors. You push the doors and enter. It's quiet again, no sign of Kiara, and no burning incense. You call out.

"Oh my," A door opens at the back of the hall and Kiara emerges, beaming as she catches sight of you. "Back so soon? Is there something about the war that bothers you? Have you come to consider my offer? Or did you find that you just couldn't get enough of me~"

Kiara giggles. Even without the heavy scent of the incense present, you're still feeling a bit light headed.

"I need clothes and don't have any money okay?" You cut Kiara off. Don't let her get you on the wrong foot.

"Is that it?" Kiara looks disappointed for a bit, before smiling again. "Well, it's not quite what I should be doing as an overseer, but since it's you asking, I do think there's something I can do for you. You're so fresh into the world after all, there's nothing wrong with helping you find out just what you want. This way~"

Kiara beckons you towards the door she just came out of. You approach, peeking through to see a fairly plainly decorated lounge. It's quite small; the back of the chapel definitely doesn't seem to be made for many people being here. This is going better than you'd expected.

"Ah- Ruler, could you please wait outside? There's not that much room here." Kiara stops Ruler from following you into the lounge. Ruler gives Kiara a look. "Okay, you don't like me- but you'll be right there. You can be here in a second if anything happens."

That all sounds about right. And Kiara's right; the lounge here really isn't big enough for a third person present; it's a small room with only a couple pieces of furnishing, candles filling the air with a nice, relaxing scent. "It'll be fine Ruler- better keep an eye out for anyone else approaching."

"Fine- but if you need me I'll be right there okay?" Ruler sticks by the door as Kiara closes it, intent on keeping an ear open.

"There, now it's just us girls. Come on, you can get ready while I look them out." Kiara opens a cupboard and begins rummaging through it, muttering to herself about how this wouldn't fit, that she knows she has something here. You begin to fumble with your stuff, stifling a yawn. It really is cozy in here. Maybe you didn't quite get enough sleep last night.

"Ah- here we go" Kiara says, pulling out a neatly folded pile as you finish taking off your ragged pile of mostly-clothes, pressing it into your arms as she scoops your old stuff away. As you turn away to start putting whatever she's given you on- it's hard to tell exactly what it is, but then you are feeling a bit tired still- you hear a dull fwoosh from behind you. If you weren't feeling so relaxed, it'd sound suspiciously similar to what a ragged pile of mostly-clothes being set on fire would sound like.

You've managed to bury yourself partly in the new clothes- it's something dresslike- you're coming at it from below, but you're not quite at the right angle maybe? It's hard to tell.

"Oh? Are you struggling? Here, let me help-" Kiara calls out from behind you, and you feel her grip the fabric, pulling it over your head in a single, practiced sweep. You stumble backwards, falling into Kiaras soft embrace. Your heads spinning a little- just a bit of disorientation.

"Thank you." You mutter, blinking heavily as Kiara sweeps you round to face a large, full length mirror, a hand cupping your chin to raise your head up to meet your reflection. You're wearing… basically the same outfit Kiara is- a fairly figure hugging habit-like dress with long, flowing sleeves, a loose white hoodthing covering your shoulders and head, a thin black veil hanging down from it to obscure your eyes- you have to reach up to touch it before you really notice it, it doesn't get in the way of your vision at all. You catch a faint glimpse of a glazed expression on your eyes as you sweep the veil aside there, but the veil covers your eyes back up before it really registers.

There's a few differences between your version and Kiaras- for one, you have much less figure to hug, so the outfit is a bit looser on you, and your legs aren't quite as exposed. Still, eyes drifting down to where your arms hang limply, the sleeves do cover up enough that you can't actually see your barcode.

"Isn't this a bit… attention-getting?" You sigh, slumping back in Kiaras arms. It's a little embarrassing being held like this but it's very comfy, and wait didn't you want something that's not going to make you stand out?

"Ah, but nobody will see you." Kiara leans her face just a little close to yours, whispering in your ear. "With a standout enough outfit, that will be all people remember. Besides- it covers your little giveaway, and it's amazing the advantage people not seeing your eyes can give."

Kiara smiles gently. She's right… it's a lot harder to hide an expression in your eyes. You've seen enough cold smiles to know that. This is actually something really good for you. You smile and give her a brief nod. "Thank you Kiara~"

Kiara beams, fingers brushing your lips as she sets you down on a seat, passing you a pair of flats and some stockings, which you start to put on. You're starting to feel a bit more alert now, the tiredness passing. That's helped along by a sharp clap from Kiara, as she passes you a purse, placing a money-filled envelope inside. "Here- Take this. We are allowed some… discretionary funds here. And I've taken a liking to you; seeing what you do, what you end up wanting...I think it's a worthwhile use of them to help you along. Is there anything else you'd like help with?"

You blink for a moment, realising just how out of it you've been- she's had you in her palm this whole time. You really should have had Ruler here. But… she did offer to help you out with your magic last night.

[] Take Kiara up on her offer to help you figure out your magic
[] Just leave now, before she gets in your head anymore

[X] Take Kiara up on her offer to help you figure out your magic

I realise that this is not gonna be a popular vote, but the thing is, Yagami does need to figure out what she can do. Now, ideally, Waver would do that, but given that her reactions to him are - what they are - that option is not really on the table.

There's also the fact that this is a decidedly nonstandard Kiara. For one, rather than being a leader of an extremely unorthodox branch of estoeric Buddhism, she's with the Church. Which is interesting in itself, because by and large, Kiara tends to be associated with, uh, not being controlled by other people. She doesn't take orders.

There's also stuff like this:

You're starting to feel a bit more alert now, the tiredness passing. That's helped along by a sharp clap from Kiara, as she passes you a purse, placing a money-filled envelope inside.

Regular Kiara wouldn't do stuff that might draw people out - well, technically speaking, regular Kiara doesn't even put people in trance-like states, and the veil makes me think some magical bullshit is going on there - but she wouldn't do anything that might make people realise she's manipulating them.

There's also stuff like this:

Kiara's rushing towards you, but Ruler's blocking her approach.

Ruler doesn't trust her, to be sure, but we don't know by what criteria Ruler judges people, or what ability she has in regards to that in general. But interacting a bit more with her might help reveal more of what her deal is, especially a show of trust like this. And one interaction isn't likely to make or break anything, I feel.
