Ruined Kingdom New
[X] Try to spend some time with Sae.

Not too long after dinner you gently knock on Sae's door. After a few seconds, she responds with 'Come in'.

Her room is perfectly organized, as you expected. Not a speck of dust or a stray piece of clothing. The desk is the only exception, hosting a clutter of papers. Even then you're sure each one is exactly where she wants it to be.

"Hi, I just wanted to… talk?" The words feel stupid as soon as you say them.

'Beautiful start there, smooth talker.'

'Not helping.'

'I know!'

She pauses for a while, scrutinizing you. "Just… talk?"

"You had mentioned that you don't spend much time here, so I thought I should try to spend time with you while I can." For a second, you're sure she will decline and tell you she's busy.

"...Alright." She shuts the laptop she was using. "Let's talk, then." You didn't think that would work. Enough so that you can't think of what to say. "You hadn't thought of what exactly to talk about, had you?"

'Holy shit this is embarrassing.'

'Then help me!'

'Ask her what she likes to do or something!'

"...So," You finally start. "What do you like to do when you aren't working?"

"Well, I… suppose I don't have anything. Even when I'm off work I spend most of my time reviewing cases."

"Really? Nothing?" How could someone just not have a hobby?

'You realize how incredibly hypocritical that is, right?'

She makes an incredibly slight glance at her laptop, before stating. "I'm just too busy. I don't have time to play around."

'She's hiding something…'

'No shit.'

'Did you just swear!? I'm telling your dad- oh, wait. Nevermind.'

It takes a lot out of you to not react visibly to what he says. That was a low blow, and it stuns you for a bit how quickly he seems to skip between banter and actual disdain.

"What about you, then? Surely you must have something if you feel like criticizing my lack of hobbies."

That was not what you had wanted her to follow up with, even if you should have expected it.

"I guess that would be cooking-" You feel your throat close suddenly.

'Do NOT say that cleaning is your hobby too.'

'What did you do?'

'Huh? Wait, did that… Oh, hell yes. It's my time to-!' Your vocal cords feel normal again. 'FUCK!'

"You know, I don't think cooking would be considered a hobby by most people your age." Considering her generally serious disposition you'd almost think she was teasing you. "Hoping to become a chef? Perhaps a stay-at-home husband?" She is. Huh.

"Maybe I am." Two can play at this game. "Why, any of your coworkers looking for one? I've been told I make killer bentos." She slightly jerks from shock, before staring at you, then doing something utterly inconceivable.

She giggles. Only for a second before she stops herself, but you consider it a personal victory.

The two of you chat for a while longer before you're finally shooed out of her room, with her reminding you about your meeting tomorrow morning.

Your bond with Sae Niijima has increased by ??? points…?

Soon after you get back to your room, you take a deep breath and turn each of your magic circuits on one by one. Your body is slowly filled with the familiar warmth of magical energy coursing through you.

You've been unable to do your nightly training ever since you arrived here due to the near-constant surveillance, so finally being able to scratch that itch is very satisfying. You don't want to risk making a loud cracking noise from failing Reinforcement, so you limit yourself to projecting some small knives and other objects.

After a couple of hours, you flick the switch off and let yourself cool down and lie down. It takes you a while to get used to laying in a bed, due to your preference for futons, but eventually, drowsiness overtakes you, luring you to unconsciousness…

…and then you wake. Or do you?

Rather than the soft bed you went to sleep on, you're in a sitting position on an uncomfortable chair, with your head and arms laid down on a stone table. You slowly raise your head with an unnatural sense of calm, and observe the new environment around you.

You're in the ruined remains of what looks to be an old European castle, the only parts in pristine condition are blue banners that are hung from the walls, a stylized 'V' emblazoned on each one.

Delicate green grass grows in the cracks of the floor, fed by the light of the sun streaming in from crumbling holes in the ceiling. Soft piano emanates from somewhere unseen, filling the air with a strange ambiance.

You're sitting at a large round table with twenty-three seats, and on the opposite end of you lies a throne, the only filled seat other than your own.

"Trickster… Welcome to my Velvet Room." A man with long pointed ears and a somehow even larger nose, wearing a suit and a rather grotesque smile speaks first. Seeing him on that throne feels exceptionally wrong, for some reason.

"It seems the lousy excuse of a knight has finally decided to wake up!" One of two young girls, seemingly twins, speak up from the man's left side. They're both in medieval-style dresses, with the color matching the decor, and wear eyepatches on opposite sides.

"The you in reality is currently fast asleep. You are only experiencing this as a dream." The other twin speaks from the other side of the man, with a much calmer cadence.

Just a dream, huh…?

"You're in the presence of our master. Sit up straight!" The left one again.

"I don't remember calling myself a knight, and I'm not whatever a 'trickster' is." For some reason that's the first thing that comes out of your mouth.

"Hmhmhm." A throaty chuckle. "Indeed. You share no qualities with a Trickster, yet here you are, and so He you must be." He makes a grandiose gesture, opening his arms. "Welcome. I am delighted to make your acquaintance. This place exists between dream and reality, mind and matter. It is a room that only those who are bound by a 'contract' may enter. I am Igor, the master of this place. Remember it well."

Nothing he says makes sense to you, but one part sticks out to you the most. "What contract?" Even through the blanket of serenity covering you, the panic in that statement comes through in your speech. You didn't have much time for magecraft lessons with Tohsaka, but you know enough that the word 'contract' coming from a powerful magical entity is bad news.

"Know your place, squire!" The angry one speaks again, and apparently you've been demoted to squire. "Our master will explain what he feels the need to!"

"Still, this is a surprise… The state of this room reflects the state of your own heart. A decaying throne room of a ruined kingdom. It is truly a wonder that one's own heart can manifest as such."

84 vs 50. Pass
84(Roll)
+0(Rank D Insight)

'The state of your own heart'. As he says that, you start to intrinsically understand that feeling of 'wrongness' from earlier. He's not meant to be there. He isn't meant to be in a seat at all. Inversely, the twins are meant to be seated, but only in one chair, somehow? You can't quite extrapolate the reasoning behind your gut feeling, but…

"In the near future," Igor continues speaking. "There is no mistake that ruin awaits you." Your face hardens a bit, and he chuckles again. "I see there is no need to question your resolve. You'll challenge the distortion in this world, no matter what."

"Are you unable to speak in anything but ominous statements or do you just enjoy being a vague prick?" A bit more vitriolic than you had meant for it to be, maybe you're just trying to make up for the fact the voice hasn't spoken.

Wait, why hasn't he?

For some reason, it makes you tense. You stare at Igor, and by the way his smile widens even further, he knows what you're thinking.

"Only those chosen as Guests may enter here, no matter what state they exist in." Somehow it doesn't feel right for him to be missing, now. "Ah, and pardon me for not introducing the others. To my left is Caroline; to my right, Justine. They serve as attendants here."

So, the angry one is Caroline, with her hair in buns, and the other is Justine, with a braid. Caroline gives a 'hmph!' at the acknowledgement, while Justine slightly preens. "I shall explain the roles of these two at another occasion." He believes your return to be set in stone, and considering his ability to seemingly kidnap you from your dreams, he's likely right.

As you open your mouth to question them again, he holds his hand up as if to stop you, and talks again.

"Now then, it seems the night is waning. It is almost your waking hours. Take your time to slowly come to understand this place. We will surely meet again, eventually…" As Igor finishes speaking, the grass below you is suddenly alight with flame, and myriad curses spread over every possible surface. His smile doesn't fade as your vision goes black.

Sunday

You wake up(for real this time) with a start, just to find yourself in your new room once more.

'Fuck dude, wake up calmer, maybe?' Hearing the voice brings you an uncomfortable amount of peace. 'Bad dream or somethin'?'

'Something like that…' It could just be a dream, but you find yourself unable to brush it off. You try explaining the Velvet Room and the strange people, but he just laughs at you for taking a dream so seriously.

You set the matter aside for now and begin your morning routine. You wake up just before five, leaving you with a couple of hours before you leave. You debate making breakfast but don't want to risk the owner's possible ire. So, you just wait, learning a bit more about your phone.

"Good, you're here. Let's go." Luckily, Sae is one for punctuality, so you're able to leave right on time.

After another painfully slow car ride, you've made it to Shujin Academy, and soon after into the principal's office. What follows is almost a one-to-one recreation of every lecture you were given back at the detention center simply with an educational flavor.

That you're a liability, something about extenuating circumstances, immediate expulsion, etcetera. The voice also has some… colorful things to say about the principal's general appearance.

You're able to gain two useful things from this, at least. First, your student ID, and second, you've 'met' your homeroom teacher, Ms. Usami. She didn't say much though, and spent the entire meeting analyzing you.

'Meh, four out of ten.' Well, that's just rude. Incorrect too, you'd say. 'Sorry, you're right. I should've consulted the older woman connoisseur first before making a judgment.'

'What do you even mean by that!?'

'Only one of us has been romantically involved with someone twice their age and it sure isn't me, pal.'

'Only one of us has been in a relationship at all, yet you give your opinion freely. Seems like you're not one to care for experience anyway.'

'...shit. You got me there.'

The rest of your day is spent speed-walking between stores to pick up everything you'll need for the upcoming year, as well as a quick stop for lunch. You end it off with a bookstore, picking up the last of your textbooks. Why they wouldn't just keep them all in a single one you don't know, but it's very inefficient. As you pick up a math textbook off of the shelf, Sae turns to you.

"There's a small portion of the stipend remaining for 'miscellaneous reading', so pick out whatever you would like."

You've never been much of a casual reader, but you would also hate to waste money. There has to be something here that could interest you. Especially since you'll be commuting via train each day.

[ ][Book] Studying Techniques for Dummies
You're not a terrible student, but if you want to excel it would help to be better at Researching.

[ ][Book] Psychology 101
You keep thinking about that strange dream… maybe being a bit more Insightful could help you decipher its meaning?

[ ][Book] Mind Over Matter
A book all about utilizing your Willpower, apparently. You don't know how useful it would be, but it catches your eye.

'Do you happen to have any thoughts?' You try to extend an olive branch to the voice by asking for his advice.

'UGHHHHHH.'

…It seems this isn't his forte.

By the time you're home with all of your supplies, dinner is ready again. Your very essence decides that this can not stand, so you resolve yourself to bring it up after everyone finishes eating.

…Maybe you should've said something during the meal instead. You hadn't realized how little you spoke while eating if there wasn't a rabid tiger egging you on. So it's another silent dinner.

Why aren't either of them talking either…?

You'll admit you aren't an expert in familial relationships, but they seem rather detached. Weirdly professional, almost. Some part of you tells you that it's not your place to pry, but even so, you can't help but want to make it better.

That's for later, though. For now, you have a kitchen to become a part of.

"Hey, Makoto." You catch her attention as the two of you clear the dishes, while barely being able to keep yourself from stuttering over the name. "Could I help out with dinner from now on? I used to cook for myself daily, and it'd hopefully lighten your load a little."

"Oh, sure, if you want to." A very easy acceptance. She isn't territorial, then. "Actually… I was wondering if you'd like to head to school with me tomorrow morning? I heard from Sis that you weren't used to the train system, so…"

It's true, Fuyuki didn't have one of its own and you didn't travel enough for you to get used to. Of course, you're fairly sure you could figure it out easily enough, but it'd be nice to have someone else there.

[ ][Commute] Agree.
You don't see any reason to decline.

'Now, hold on there.' What?

'Shouldn't you be saying something about spending time in close contact with a girl again?'

'I mean, yeah, but do you really want to show up to school with the stick-up-her-ass Student President? Terrible first impression.' Right. You put too much faith in him, and you don't even know why you did.

[ ][Commute](0.5) Go it alone.
Not for the reason he said, but if you want to snoop around a bit, it would be best not to have company.

Author's note: Okay, now I should have enough free time to keep working on my Quests. Hopefully that's not tempting fate or anything, again.

Angra has learned he can do things! Barely! Good for him!(Bad for you, probably)

The Velvet Room makes an appearance, with a pretty significant change in scenery. Stealing someone's throne isn't very cash-money of him, though.

I don't really have much to say about this chapter, honestly. The next update will be your first day at school, so that will be something!

[X] Agree.

"Of course, I would love to. What time do you normally leave?"

"It's pretty early if that's okay. It's required by the Student Council for me to be there by 7:30, so it will be a bit before 7…"

"That's not a problem. I'll be ready by then." She seems surprised you still said yes, but you can tell she's pretty happy about it, so this was definitely the right thing to do. The conversation falls into an awkward silence, so the two of you bid farewell and head to your respective rooms.

Today took a surprising amount of energy out of you, so you find yourself in bed soon after a quick Circuit training session and decide to do some quick web surfing.

One of the few things you've downloaded onto your phone was a local news app. It's incredibly helpful to have constant access to current events just sitting in your pocket. Even if what you're reading about is rather disheartening.

A subway accident…

The conductor had been perfectly normal before suddenly… stopping. Everything. As though a switch had been flicked he ceased all action, causing a derailment. It's not the first of these incidents either. It's happened enough for them to have a label for the 'condition'.

Mental shutdowns, hm?

'I'm sure that's a perfectly normal condition. Mhm. Nothing supernatural going on there.'

You should-

'Yeah, yeah, you should get to the bottom of it. We get it, Mr. Hero of Justice, no need to keep pushing it.'

'I'm ignoring you.'

'Oh no, my poor feelings!'

Speaking of apps, the strange one from before is still sitting there, trying to delete it again proves it to be just as stubborn as before. You know you're not an expert, but that's definitely abnormal.

You should probably ask someone about that.

Your first day of school in this new world is tomorrow. You should probably get some sleep. Your last moments of consciousness are spent thinking about those strange incidents…

April 11th, 2016

Monday

You wake up normally, with no strange dreams to interrupt your night. After quickly washing up and getting dressed, you head to the kitchen to start your day as it should be, with a full breakfast.

Unfortunately, the fridge is a bit sparse. Correction, very sparse. You won't be able to make breakfast or any lunches with this… hopefully, you can get in on the next grocery trip to correct that. You joked about bringing bentos to Sae's coworkers, but you have a feeling that there are two people closer to you who need them more.

You sate your hunger with a rather utilitarian protein bar. It's entirely unsatisfying. You'll fix it soon.

'You get caught up on the weirdest things, man.'

'A diet is one of the most important things to stay on top of, I won't allow any criticism for my stubbornness on that.'

'...sure.'

Soon, Makoto enters, quickly eats the same breakfast as you did, -you have to hold back your discontent at that- grabs an umbrella, and heads to the door, all without saying a word.

Maybe she isn't a morning person.

Offering a brief 'good morning' only to receive an 'mhm' back, the two of you head out. The soft rainfall is immediately apparent, so you huddle beneath her now-open umbrella. No more words are spoken, the only sound being the rain and some soft yawns, slowly decreasing in frequency.

The two of you make it to the station at the same time your train does, so Makoto quickly dries her umbrella and the two of you hop inside. It's packed almost immediately, though a single empty seat nearby catches your attention- and hers.

"It's not a problem, you can take the seat." It's an offer made by reflex to a question that wasn't yet asked.

"If you're sure." She plops down and sets her bag on her lap. The route is pretty direct to Shujin, but you can still feel time draining away.

[X] Mind Over Matter

Your chosen book lies dormant in your school bag. If you had been alone you may have started reading it, but it feels a bit rude to accept an invitation just to read the entire time. You look to Makoto, only to find her already staring at you, before she quickly glances away.

She's dying to ask you something, that's for sure.

'Probably the whole criminal record thing.' Oh, right. She would know about that.

'Not really the place to talk about that, unfortunately. I should bring it up back at home.'

'I think it adds to our sense of mystery. That's attractive to a lot of people y'know, and it's not like you have anything else going for you.' You don't need anything 'going for you' because you already have someone who- whatever. You should stop getting riled up over what he says.

"Hey, I was wondering if you could help me with my phone?" It's the only conversation starter you could think of.

"Your phone? I'm not the best with technology… What do you need?"

"Well, you're probably better than me. It's my first smartphone, after all." She leans back a bit, surprised, before nodding. "There's this app that suddenly showed up, and it can't be deleted."

"Is it a virus? Were you looking at anything, um…" She flushes a bit. "'Sketchy'?" Is this about your criminal record again? An incredibly unsubtle way to bring it up if so…

'Porn. She's talking about porn.'

"No!" Tone it back. "...I haven't. I've pretty much only used it for news so far."

"Alright…" You feel like she doesn't quite believe you despite your counterargument. "Well, other than restarting it I don't know what else to suggest. Maybe take it to a repair place?" That's unfortunate, you had hoped it was just some piece of common knowledge that had evaded you.

Your opener has worked though, and the conversation jumps to another topic, Shujin. Nothing particularly important, though you do find out you're in the same homeroom. You enjoy talking with her, she's pretty- 'Full stop.' -quick-witted.

83 vs 40, 80. High pass.
71(Roll)

You notice two other students from Shujin are standing a fair bit away from you, chatting loudly. You're not one to eavesdrop, but they can be easily heard from where you are.

"Oh my God, did you see Mr. Kamoshida at the last rally? I should try joining the volleyball team if it means seeing more of that…" One of the girls says with a light blush coloring her cheeks.

"You're such a pervert." The other says, followed by giggling.

'…gross.'

'As if you don't do the same thing.'

'It's no different from what you say I do, sure. Also, I'd never say it out loud.'

'That's basically admitting to it.'

"Aoyama-Itchome. You've arrived in Aoyama-Itchome." The automated voice of the subway cuts through your mental conversation.

"This is ours." Makoto stands up and starts leading the way after making sure you're following. As you disembark from the train your eyes drift to a poster of an idol, colored in a striking blue, that brings your mind back to that dream from a couple of nights ago.

"A castle, huh…?" You find yourself unconsciously speaking aloud. You get a weird look from Makoto, but she doesn't say anything about it. As you keep walking your phone starts to feel abnormally warm in your back pocket. Is it overheating?

'I mean, -pretending that this dream is actually important- it's obviously related to that Saber, yeah?'

You can't say it hadn't crossed your mind. Your thoughts were a bit hazy when you were actually there, so you couldn't think quite right, but thinking back makes it far more clear.

'Was that all it was? Some remnants of her memories blending with normal dream nonsense?'

'That'd be pretty pathetic, man.' You disagree. It makes you happy that she's still with you, even if only in your dreams.

You'll make it back. You have to.

"We're only a few streets away now." You're jolted from your thoughts as your companion notes the imminent end to your journey. "It's nice that it isn't too far from the station."

You find yourself about to reply before that warm feeling suddenly expands outwards towards your surroundings, and a strong scent of sweat and… other things, fills the air.

'Oh? Things might finally be getting exciting, here.'

'Not the time!'

Something similar to magical energy is building in a circle centered on you, which you can vaguely sense the boundary of. There are only a few scattered students along the street, considering how early it is, but none are close enough to be in the pulse.

Other than Makoto, that is. You have barely any time to think here, and you don't even know what that scent could possibly mean in this context.

You should…

[ ] Move away from Makoto.
You don't want to endanger her with whatever might be happening here. Make sure she's out of the radius.

[ ] Prepare yourself.
Thinking of it as a direct attack might be too hasty. See what happens before acting rashly.

'Hey, or -or!- you get rid of the fucking thing. No need to get all gung ho about it, dumbass.'

'...'

[ ] Throw the phone.
This might look a bit weird to her, but you'll gladly take some awkwardness if need be.

Author's Note: Sure does feel gross to write anything even remotely positive about Kamoshida. Gagged a little.

Ominous Purple New
[X] Prepare yourself.

Your magic circuits open at a thought, and you lower yourself, eyes peeled as the feeling reaches its apex. For a moment, nothing. You stay tensed, mana buzzing, then-

"What are you doing?" Makoto stares at you with a confused look on her face. You scramble for an explanation, anything that doesn't involve the Not-Magical-Energy that she can't feel.

"...Where did all of the other students go?" It's early, but there were still some people in the Shujin uniform around. Now, however, the street is ominously empty. The ambient sounds of the city have been silenced as well.

"Well, there aren't many around at this time anyway…"

"The rain stopped, too. " From downpour to not a raindrop in sight.

"So it has. Are you… okay?" She sounds very concerned about your mental state for some reason.

'Yeah, you sound insane.'

'Don't you start.'

"Look, Shirou. It's normal to get nervous about things like this, but it will be fine! I'm sure you'll adapt quickly, it's just a normal school… after… all…" Her sentence trails off as she stops walking, staring ahead. As you look away from her, you understand immediately.

A massive castle lies before you, looking absolutely out of place in the middle of modern buildings, like a slice out of time. A plaque nearby reads 'Shujin Academy', and banners adorning the walls boast about winning a recent tournament. As you take in the sight the clouds clear, revealing a sky marked in ominous purple.

'That's… not what I was expecting.'

'What were you expecting?'

'Based on the smell? Aphrodisiac.'

'Wouldn't it be more your style to not have me throw it, then?'

'Well, I was planning to tense up your hand so you'd just drop it on the ground."

'...'

'Y'know, so you'd have both a broken libido and a broken phone.'

'...'

'Or if that didn't work I at least hoped a suddenly appearing group of like, nuns or something, showed up where you threw it.'

'You are absolutely disgusting.'

'Thanks!'

"What is…? Why is there a castle here?"

"I… don't know." You can only reply rather dully, as even with your (admittedly limited) mystical knowledge, this is a new one.

"Am I still asleep? Is this a dream?" It makes sense that would be the first conclusion she'd reach. She proves her theory false after pinching herself and lightly flinching. "No, I'm not. Then what is happening here?"

The two of you don't say a word for a while, staring at the anomaly. After an amount of time shorter than most sane people would take, you make your decision and walk forward onto the castle's drawbridge.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm going in."

"Is that really wise?"

"...No." You can't lie about that. "But I can't think of any other way to go from here. Can you?" You still haven't seen a soul other than the two of you, and you doubt that will change if you keep wandering.

Makoto hesitates before saying, "I can't, unfortunately. It seems we have nowhere else to search." She steps up to stand next to you.

"We? No, you should stay out here. It could be dangerous in there."

"What? That's exactly why we should stick together."

"I'm uniquely qualified for this, alright?"

"Are you now?" She doesn't believe you. You didn't want to have to play this card, knowing the dangers behind it, but…

"...I'm a mage. I can handle whatever is in there." The truth sits heavy in the air. You don't know if something like the Mage's Association exists in this new world but if it does it could be lethal for her to find out. However…

"Really, Shirou?" She gives you the blankest stare you've ever seen before striding ahead without another word.

"Makoto, wait!" She doesn't. If only your magecraft was quick to cast you could prove it here-!

'The master conversationalist strikes again!'

You once again ignore his goading and run after your wayward companion. Over the drawbridge, through the gate, and into the suspiciously wide-open front doors.

The inside is just as extravagant as the outside. Chandeliers hang above you and a copious amount of gold ornamentation in every direction. There's a grand staircase leading to other rooms lying on the opposite side of the entryway, and what looks to be a painting at the top, though it's currently covered in a covering of red velvet.

"About what I expected…" She's right, it's pretty stereotypically castle-like. Rather gaudy, overly showy.

"You're really calm about this." The normal reaction would be to freak out. You're even a little off-balance yourself.

"What good would panicking do? Besides, so are you." She drags a finger against the stone wall and hums to herself. "Is there any chance we're hallucinating?"

"Well, I don't know how likely it would be for both of us to see the same thing if that was the case. Also, there wasn't much of an opportunity for us to get drugged or anything."

"Yeah, you're right. Still, it's quiet… wouldn't there normally be some soldiers here, or maybe royalty?" Well, yes, if it was a real castle it would surely have-

A clunking sound of steel resounds from a corridor to your left, and soon after a retinue of knights come rushing forth.

'Probably should have expected that one. Never tempt Fate, man, from personal experience.'

Ignoring his 'helpful' commentary, you quickly try to observe the assumedly hostile entities. You're fairly sure they aren't human. The proportions are off, and the way they move is weirdly exaggerated... Some form of familiar, maybe? Their magical signature is almost the same as the castle itself, too, so they evaded your notice…

You won't miss them the next time, though.

'If there is a next time.'

"Oh? It seems our dear student council president has decided to present herself to me!" A smarmy voice comes from above, and at the sound of it, the knights stop their approach and take a knee in reverence.

"Mr. Kamoshida?" Makoto says quietly with a stunned look.

That's the name you heard earlier. A coincidence, or something else?

Out of the shadows at the top of the stairs comes a man wearing… something absurd. What looks to be a red bathrobe as well as bright pink underwear. That's it.

And a crown. Can't forget the crown.

Him wearing that irks you a bit.

'...huh…'

'Is that all you have to say about this?'

You figured he would be a bit more witty about this, some insults, some jokes, or maybe-

'HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA-'

-that, he could do that.

"I knew it was only a matter of time. Though I had expected I would need to seek you out to claim you, you saw fit to come see to me of your own volition! I do admire your directness."

"What are you talking about!?"

"Oh come now, no need to play dumb about it. I know you're smarter than that, student council president and all." This guy reminds you a bit too much of a certain Master of Rider…

"Still though, I can't blame you. Your type always seems to find older men irresistible. Not to mention one with such a… royal visage." His ever-present lecherous smirk grows.

'-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA-'

"You're insane… What is wrong with you?" He didn't like that. His smile drops a bit and his eyes turn colder. You move to block his vision of her and feel his revolting gaze focus on you.

"Oh? It seems one of the slaves has crawled his way from the dungeon! Or perhaps you're just a filthy vagrant who's wormed his way into MY castle. Either way, the only punishment allowed for trespassing is death."

He dramatically flicks a hand in your direction, and every knight in the room turns towards you, swords drawn and intent clear. The action also has the hopefully unintended side effect of flashing you as the bathrobe flings open.

'-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA-'

'Could you stop laughing?!'

'-HA.. ha.. okay… okay… I'm good… I'm good. Can we kill him now? Something's telling me he's like the god of this place and that's pissing me off.' You haven't heard such actual anger from him before, just a general tone of malice.

Weapon blueprints flash through your mind as the encircling knights get closer. You can admit that Saber's sword is far beyond you -for now- but that doesn't mean you're out of options. Some blades, a bow you don't recognize but seems to force itself to the forefront of your thought.

Of course, the question is: how are you going to use them?

[ ][Plan]Fight the knights.
No need to hesitate, you're certain they're not living beings.

[ ][Plan]Escape.
Cut a path for the two of you to get away from here. You won't get any answers, but it's the safest option.

[ ][Plan](0.5) Go for the king.
Not to kill him, but if you have him as a hostage the knights should stay back, right? However, it will leave Makoto unprotected…

'She'll be fine, man, as long as you just fuckin kill him from here! Arrow through the eye, done and done!'

Author's Note: Silly Shirou, basing your normal cast time on what it takes to project Caliburn. You could've just done like, a knife or something.

I watched back the start of Kaneshiro's Palace to see how Makoto reacted to the Metaverse to find that she really did not care, like a surprisingly little amount. Two sentences of 'Wow this is impossible.' and then she was totally chill.

Also is there any possibility you guys speed-blitz this Palace? Writing this guy's lines is so very revolting.

[X]Fight the knights.

They're moving towards you slowly, expecting an execution rather than a brawl. That gives you some time to prepare carefully for the coming battle.

Reinforcement(Strength)
+25 points of circuit strain. (Warming (25/50))

Your reinforcement fully completes, and your muscles feel denser and stronger. One of the knights separates from the rest, the others staying in formation to prevent retreat. That strange bow keeps pushing its way to the forefront of your mind, so you decide to acquiesce.

Projection(Bow)
+25 points of circuit strain. (Warming (50/50))
Circuits are now Nominal(0/100)

Projection(10x Arrows)
+20 points of circuit strain. (Nominal (20/100))

52 vs 40, 80. Low Pass.
47(Roll)
+5(Rank C Strength)

Within a second you have the bow in your hands and drawn back. Your first arrow flies directly towards its chest, the second going for one of its joints. The first shot performs admirably, though about what you expected. Its force knocks the knight back, but not even a dent is left behind.

The second's performance is more disheartening. It nails its mark, digging into an unarmored point to no effect, much like the other. They can't be invulnerable, there must be some sort of weakness…

The voice gives a contemplative hum and then goes quiet. You keep firing at different points and different knights, but all yield a similar result. Still, the ones nearest to you have been knocked back enough for you to swap your attention to your companion.

She's frozen in place, staring. It's not too surprising, considering the amount of shocking events in the last few minutes. You're about to tell her to get to safety before another of the familiars appears behind her.

"Ma-!" As you go to warn her, she quickly turns and sharply kicks the approaching knight, her shock not enough to fully debilitate her. She winces slightly at the impact, but it makes enough space for you to intercept.

'Go for the mask!'

You don't have time to question his advice, your hand quickly reaching towards the face of your enemy. Your reinforced strength easily tears the mask off, and nothing but inky blackness stares back from underneath. Their body starts to convulse and you leap back, your instincts blaring in warning. Each piece of armor shatters one by one leaving behind an amorphous mass of black goo, slowly forming into something else.

The others follow soon after, voluntarily shedding their armor. A wide variety of different creatures emerge, none of which have anything close to the same body shape as the knights did. The one you personally unmasked takes the form of a woman in a red dress, floating above the ground.

Why though…?

Some form of fae, maybe?

'A Silky.'

'...and how do you know that?'

'I... have no idea.'

Regardless of the naming convention, with their armor abandoned they should be more vulnerable. More arrows are projected and sent their way, and while a few make an effort to dodge them, others simply take the blow, the hole left behind quickly healing.

Projection(10x Arrows)
+20 points of circuit strain. (Nominal (40/100))

'Not working!'

'I can see that!'

It's just not enough power, they need more punch…

You divert your attention to strengthening your ammunition. The bow is strong enough already, but the shots fired aren't. However, with some Reinforcement…

2 vs 30, 60, 90. Fail.
7(Roll)
-5(Rank E Mana)
+0(Circuits Nominal)

Rerolling due to Beginner's Luck…

5 vs 30, 60, 90. Fail.
10(Roll)
-5(Rank E Mana)
+0(Circuits Nominal)

Wow that is… unfortunate.

Your concentration doesn't hold. The arrows you were pumping mana into shatter like glass, leaving you without ammo. You immediately start to project more before-

Awareness Check
92 vs 60. Pass.
77(Roll)
+15(Rank A Awareness)

Reflex Check
41 vs 40, 80. Low Pass.
26(Roll)
+0(Rank D Reflex)
+15(Bloodhound)

Bufu
10d6 = 37

Melee
3d6 = 12

The scent of ash mixed with sharp mint draws your attention to their backline, as mana gathers. You react in time to a wave of flame sent by some pumpkin things, but shards of ice from the 'Silky' stab into your leg, drawing a strangled gasp from your mouth.

You take 37 damage.

The ice expands, frost covering up to your thigh. You try to move to stay moving, but the biting cold has left you entirely off balance. Talons slice into your face at the same time another casts a spell that binds your arms. You hear a scream come from Makoto, though the blood now coating your eyes means you can't tell if it's a reaction to your injury or something happening to her.

You take 12 damage.

'Get up. What are you fucking doing-'

His voice dissipates, leaving you alone in your own head. Time slows as despair starts to creep into your heart, and you swear you see a similar blue butterfly float serenely in front of you.

Are you going to let this happen again? This tragedy? This shame?

You have to do something. Maybe Caliburn…? It would destroy you, but at least Makoto would get out safely-

'Break these chains!/Protect her!/Fucking crush them!'

An excruciating headache hits you as the voice suddenly returns joined by two others, forming a discordant barrage of noise. Rushing wind blows in all directions, its origin unknown. An almost primal yell forces its way through your vocal cords.

'Run wild!/Stay calm!/Get pissed!'

As conflicting information floods your brain, you can barely see the tyrant's face twisted in sudden fear. Something seems to appear on your face, but it doesn't seem to block your vision.

'Filthy oppressor!/Disgusting coward!/Petty god!'

Your foot slams into the castle floor, the ice covering it shattering on impact. Transient blue flames cover your body, but you feel no heat.

After all…

'I am thou…'

The spell that is binding you melts away into nothingness.

'And thou art l…!'

The cuts on your face shine, then vanish, leaving only unblemished flesh. Your leg feels fully recovered as well.

'Thou who needs to make up his damn mind!'

A single voice starts to become more distinct, the others fading away into the background. Your hand makes it to whatever is covering your face, only to find…

Author's Note: Firstly, I will mention that this is just choosing which of them you start with. The other two will be available with time(a fair bit of it). Also, you won't get any new voices in your head no matter what is picked.

Choosing to fight in the last update meant you were very likely to awaken either in this chapter or the next unless you crit out of your mind. Which… you absolutely did not do. Technically, rolling lower on the Magecraft check would've been better due to Beginner's Luck Plus. Though maybe that would have been a waste.
