Fate/Collapsing World

[X] Spend time at home with Taiga and Sakura, some quality time before he leaves. This will be the last time he'll get to see his family until the next school break, after all. He should enjoy it.

Ohhh, Kiana! It's fun to see her here, and everyone's favorite stinking suspicious priest too. I like Kotomine's choice of words in his description of Kiritsugu, it's very... poetic. Maybe envious. I think you also got Shirou's internal voice down pat, the narration definitely has that brand of dry wit.

[X] Two tasks are possible, but Shirou will arrive late. He'll be in time for the bare minimum orientation and start of classes, but he'll be hitting the ground running and will have some trouble getting into the swing of classes.
Shirou would really be better served by having enough time to get his bearings at St. Freya, but a part of me wants more scenes before he leaves and feels it would be amusing to see him scramble.

[X] Make sure to get a last visit to the dojo in. It probably won't mean much to him as a fighter, but it'll be a good last chance to spar and speak with Kiana and Kotomine. Mostly Kiana, at least there he only loses the fights rather than the conversations.

In defiance of my Rin bias and not finding domestic Taiga and Sakura that interesting, it would probably be nice to have a scene with Shirou and his makeshift family. Mostly, i I want to see more of Kiana and Kotomine for now.

[x] One task will give Shirou time to settle in at St Freya before the start of the school year. He'll be able to meet with the people he'll spend his time with, get his bearings in what resources are available to him, and get a decent footing in the coursework, especially the parts he knows are going to be hard for him.

Kiana is a good tuna.

[X] Shinji, Sakura's brother, has been hitting her. Shirou had been thinking over what to do about it, but he's run out of time. His best idea right now is just punching the guy so he knows how it feels to get punched, but if he takes some extra time he may come up with something less likely to lose himself a friend. (Don't worry, Shinji will get punched whether or not this vote is taken, the vote determines how much more complex Shirou's response is beyond that)

All this Shinji bullying :(

With all the butterflies, the question becomes is there even the impetus for Shinji to be the same person as he was in FSN?

[X] Shirou has no intention whatsoever of confessing to Tohsaka Rin - to him, she is one to be admired, not one to be had. And certainly not now that he's leaving town. But it might be nice to attend the cram school one more time and just mention that he's leaving. He doesn't really think he's someone that features into her attention at all, but it would still be kind of rude to just vanish from her environment without saying anything.

Instead of picking between Tuna and Rinface, let's do both. Give our favorite tuna one final sparring session with lunch and say goodbye to Rin. It'll be a while before we'll see them again assuming we get the chance.

Just found this Quest, know literally nothing about Honkai Impact, should be fun.

To be fair to Siegfried, in as much as you can have good reason to abandon your daughter, he has a very good one.

Oh, yeah, but while I know that and you know that and Siegfried knows that, Kiana doesn't know that so Shirou doesn't either.

That does explain why he's relatively respectful of Kiana. If he was still an active Valkyrie ten years ago, he was definitely aware of Cecilia and Siegfried, and might even have known them personally, possibly? If Otto trusts him to keep an eye on things in Fuyuki, that suggests that Kirei was pretty notable himself.

Kirei and Kiritsugu were both A-rankers, yes, and in the upper-A land where people like Siegfried and Himeko rest. Both very good Valkyries, though as Theresa's narration in the OP noted, Kiritsugu left Schicksal on somewhat unpleasant terms.

Ohhh, Kiana! It's fun to see her here, and everyone's favorite stinking suspicious priest too. I like Kotomine's choice of words in his description of Kiritsugu, it's very... poetic. Maybe envious. To be entirely honest, I can't claim full credit. The phrasing was pretty much directly riffed off how Kotomine thought of it in the LNs.

He grasped the woman's neck with his strong fingertips and stopped her blood flow.
Looking at the other's weak and painful expression, Kirei calmly said.
"I finally understand. So this is Emiya Kiritsugu."
Kirei threw the woman, who had already fainted, to one side, and gazed emptily into the darkness.
In retrospect, Kirei had been wrong since the start– his question was answered, but his anticipation became disappointment.
Emiya Kiritsugu was not looking for the truth amongst meaningless repetition.
That man had simply consigned all meaningful things into nothingness.
It wasn't that he had no wishes, but that he had such a ridiculous wish that he fell into a cycle of nothingness. His futile efforts and what he had wasted was so foolish that it was unsalvageable.
Perhaps Kiritsugu could see through Kotomine Kirei's empty heart, and perhaps he would fear that emptiness and be alarmed. However, he would never be able to imagine the meaning of having such an emptiness. He could never hope to understand the fervent desire that Kirei harbored.
Emiya Kiritsugu's life could be concluded as having repeatedly discarded everything.
The joy and happiness that man had discarded – even its fragments were important enough in Kirei's eyes for him to protect with his life or even die for.
For a man like Kirei who continued to be lost and could not find a single piece of such joy and happiness, Kiritsugu's life only existed in his dreams and his admiration.
His insatiable thirst and unrecoverable loss had been belittled and mocked in such a way – how could he endure this? How could he not hate this?

... or at least how I remembered him thinking of it, apparently I did come up with it and ascribed it to Urobuchi.

Of course the exact context of how Kirei discovered Kiritsugu's true nature is probably somewhat different here, but he did have the same cycle of 'we're so similar, has he found the answer to my struggles?' to 'we were never anything alike'. There's a reason Kirei's advice to Shirou was 'literally don't ever do what he did with his life and the things important to him'.

All this Shinji bullying :(

With all the butterflies, the question becomes is there even the impetus for Shinji to be the same person as he was in FSN?

Things won't be the exact same, but I did make efforts to preserve FSN's pre-Fifth Grail War dynamics in the new context. So Sakura is still secretly adopted, and Shinji is still abusive towards her - Shirou has already become aware of the 'hitting her' thing, though he has no information yet on whether it goes any farther than that, nor what if any involvement Old Man Z has.

(Though considering that in FSN Zouken is a 500-year-old immortal monster of European origin, and has been around since about the late 1400s, it may be safe to assume that either some of those details have been changed, or that he shares a connection with anyone else matching those descriptors)

Goddammit Otto, can you stop screwing up everything for everyone for just one second?

Because Rin is gud for the Shirou's soul. (And Tsundere Shenanigans)

"I am not at liberty to say," Kotomine pointed out. "Especially in such a public place. Suffice to say that it was not adviseable to do anything further to that source, after the outbreak was ended. If you reach a sufficient clearance, I will be happy to tell you more details."
A Herrscher? Though that sounds a bit improbable since it looks like Kotomine and Kiritsugu aren't S-rank valks who would have knowledge of that. :thonk:
Hmm, could just be something else that generates Houkai energy, though I'm not entirely sure what else can.

We'll meet Kiana again...maybe, prooobably. Should probably spend time with Sakura and Taiga before Shirou goes off to St. Freya.

Giant Honkai corpse? There was that one in China in the manga. The one that had that sword with the Empress lady's spirit in it still.

I'd guess maybe a Gem, but there's no reason they couldn't move that unlike the corpse.

Well I mean if there was another Herrscher after Sirin popped, there would've been a Third Eruption already. :p

Plus I kinda doubt Shirou would've survived being in close proximity to such an event even if Kerry had some kind of magical anti honkai juice on him.

Thinking on it, if PW is preserving roughly the context, then it's probably something to the effect of Irisviel turning into a pseudo-Herrscher. Or being turned into one, because Schicksal has no sense of right or wrong.

It would explain why Kiritsugu left the organisation on such bad terms.

Since we've started talking a bunch about Herrschers, may as well give a little infodump on them - Pale Wolf will probably talk about them in a St Freya class, but as a brief primer:

Herrschers are the human representatives of the Honkai. Due to a variety of reasons, a regular human - usually one who has been victimised by humanity to some degree - becomes infected by a vast amount of Honkai energy, more than a human should be able to take, and they do not die.

instead, they are some of the most powerful and dangerous enemies humanity will ever face. Their creation/ascension is marked by a sudden spike of Honkai energy in their environment, killing any humans nearby and turning them into zombies, as Honkai Beasts appear around them.

The First Herrscher and the First Eruption occurred in the 1950s, Berlin. There's not a lot of information on this, but it's safe to assume that thousands died at a minimum. But in comparison to the Second, this was nothing.

The Second Herrscher Erupted in the early 2000s, in Siberia. Though the isolated origin meant that there were relatively few casualties intially, the Second Herrscher likely killed millions, directly and indirectly, as the Second Honkai War raged on. Given that the War lasted perhaps - a month at the outmost, likely closer to a week or so - a lot of people died, rapidly. The official story is that the S rank Valkyrie of the time, Cecilia Schiariac, Kiana's mother, fought the Herrscher in a stalemate, whilst Schicksal fired several Honkai fission missiles at their location to kill the Hersscher.

The Third Eruption has not yet occurred, but it is the inciting incident for HI3, which takes place a year or so after it. It occurs in Japan.
