Fate/Barren Lie: A Fate/Zero Quest

[X] Bring the two back and try to open negotiations. You're sure that the two would be open to negotiations - it's just that you aren't sure if you can trust either of them to keep their bargain, even through a geas.

Well worth the wait. As always, your writing is incredible :D

[X] Leave them here. Caster's ribbons will wear off eventually, and you'll be long gone by then. You've taught them not to mess with you, and that should be enough.

I feel like it would be too dangerous to bring them back at all, and we did kind of make a pact with Waver earlier, didn't we? I think Waver mentioned at one point he was working with Kairi, as part of the Association's clean-up group, and I don't want to go turn around and end up doing something that could cause us to potentially spit in Waver's face after making that alliance with him. since, you know, Kairi is likely Waver's ally as well, given they're part of the same team sent by the Association.

I mean...negotiations might be okay, but that has the potential to go very, very wrong, if I'm interpreting the word choice for that particular vote right. I'd rather be cautious and not bring them along at all, even if it would give them the chance to act later.

Sisigou is pretty reasonable iirc, and having more allies is always a good thing.

We now have three servants on our side, four if we count Berserker, and we know what they can do so the threat they pose is, while definitely not zero, manageable. Also while Kairi is a mercenary i'm not sure how open he would be to going against his current employer by letting Kerry live and allying with us.
And to be honest if Caster through some miracle manages to convince Kerry to ally with us there is no need to get Kairi on our side.

Ending
Okay.
So, this sorta sucks (really sucks, in all honesty), but I don't think I'll be able to continue the Quest. Between my IRL stuff and work, I've been getting pretty pressed for time, something that's going to get a lot worse in the coming months. Between letting this Quest go on indefinite hiatuses (weeks, months) at a time while I scramble to get my stuff together or dropping the Quest entirely, I think that... yeah, I should probably stop the Quest. When you're strapped for time on both work and writing, and you start treating writing like work - that's when you know you should probably figure something out.

I'm sorry about that; I intended on working much farther past this arc, but when you realize that "yes, dealing with work will probably not get any better" and seeing the quality of my writing and my work diminish as a result and/or take up too much time, I decided that it's best to not continue. Again, I am truly sorry, as it isn't fair to y'all. You deserve much better than a half-assed ending or a discontinued Quest :(

At the same time, this was my very first Quest. And I made it... well, a few chapters in. I got blindsided a few times, made a few dumb mistakes, got slapped by formatting, made a bunch of dumb plot choices, but I really did enjoy writing the Quest. So, I'll keep on writing Quests in the future. Just... not right now. I need to deal with one thing at a time, and it'll take a while for me to finish this particular problem.

So. Yeah.
...

AT THE SAME TIME, HOWEVER: (To end this Quest off with a positive note):

1. I am an absolute glutton for punishment. REST ASSURED, AS SOON AS I HAVE ENOUGH FREE TIME TO START ANOTHER QUEST, I WILL BE BACK. Currently doing some (very light) work on a BNHA quest, and I have some plans for a JJBA quest and/or a Kill Bill quest. Just need to get through these few months, really.

2. Don't think that I don't care about the people who read my Quest. Seriously, y'all are amazing, and I can't say that enough. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you x100. I wouldn't have made it this far without y'all.

If you have any last questions before I end this, now would be the time to ask. I'd be happy to answer (though it may take a while). Otherwise, have a great day, and continue questing/having fun/writing/doing whatever you do.
Sincerely grateful,
- DoBetterLettuce

Best of luck to you, Lettuce. Sad to see you go, but with whatever your circumstances are, it's completely understandable. You did a really great job, considering its your first quest, and if you ever decide to continue it I'll look forward to it.

As far as questions go...what were your inspirations for Barren Lie? Obviously Apocrypha, Grand Order, and Zero are mixed in here, what with Kairi Sisigou and Ozymandias being here in Zero's setting, but I'm interested to see what other ideas went into it.

Good luck irl! It's completely understandable, and I'm glad I got to participate. As for questions, what's really up with Johanna? And the ominous dreams/visions with the Zalgo text Grail?

Aww that's sad. But you gotta do what you gotta do, maybe someday you'll return to writing this so please no major spoilers unless you are absolutely sure it won't continue!

The ominous dream-stuff is essentially just the Grail's constant attempts to communicate with Johanna, and/or eat her. Emphasis on the "attempts".
Johanna herself was a container of the Grail - but it isn't a special case like Illya or Irisviel. Johanna was more of a backup - and not just one "Johanna", but multiple of them. A last ditch effort by o'll Justacheit to keep the Grail alive, to make a bunch of low-effort copies so if one of them survived, they could start the War over again.
Kairi was hired to systematically eliminate the Johanna-lings, and Johanna's the last one. She's the 7th version of the Grail Vessel.

Tl:Dr There are a bunch of Johanna(s) running around, most of them are dead now, all except 1-2. Johanna's role was to be absorbed by the Grail; the Americans messed up the Grail, so it didn't really work. The Grail started cannibalizing everything, eating the Rulers (starting with poor Sherlock Holmes) - thus, this aborted/weird war started.

A bit of everything. The thing I got the most inspiration from was definitely Zero, but I also thought that what they did in Fate/Go Accel Zero event was really cool, so I decided to take inspiration from that.
For those who don't know, the Fate/Accel Zero Event had an older Waver Velvet + Gudao travel back in time to the 4th Grail war in order to stop the singularity (a world ending event) from being created. It also introduced two of my favorite Servants - Assassin!Kiritsugu and Caster!Irisviel.
I really wanted to make something similar to that, but have some overlap between the actual 4th Grail War and Fate/Barren Lie. Thus, I included the team of Kiritsugu/Irisviel. The rest were just personal choices that I thought would be interesting.

Awww man....
Well it was fun while it lasted and damn, that would have been a hell of a plot to try and figure out
