Your mother picks up the phone practically after the first ring. "Eric! I'm so glad to hear from you," she says warmly, and you can't help but smile. Texting is no substitute for actual conversation with your parents, and you can hear the relief in her tone.
"Hi Mom; how are things back in the Valley?" you ask, stifling the homesickness welling up in your stomach. You can safely conclude that Aspertia City is really nothing like home, even though you're more familiar with the hospital walls than the actual city.
"Everything's just as you left it," your mom replies, "Though I called someone to get the window fixed earlier today, after your father broke a brandnew window trying to install it himself," she says, clearly a little irritated.
"He's not hurt, is he?" you ask, holding back a small laugh-- typical Dad, trying to do things himself.
"Oh just a bit bruised," your mother says dismissively, "Never mind home, tell me about your pokemon training," she demands, "Your father was waiting for you in Floccesy all night, and then you text me saying that you got a ride to Aspertia instead?"
"Aspertia has a gym," you point out, trying to avoid lying to your parents more than you already have. There's a time and a place to tell them about your injuries, and that'll probably be after you get three or four badges and they can't force you to come home. "It really was just more convenient."
Your mother sighs, dismissing the matter, "I'm sure it was-- but your father was a little disappointed to have missed you. Are you planning on staying in Aspertia for another few days? He mentioned that he has a VIP flight scheduled there soon."
[] "Yeah, I'll probably still be here."
[] "I'll probably be out of here by then."
"VIP?" you ask curiously, "Do you know who it is?"
"Hm? Oh, Koffing and the Toxics is on tour," your mother answers, and you quickly recognize the name of Gym Leader Roxie's band, resident of Virbank City. "Your father is transporting their guitarist, I think, but you'd have to ask him to be sure."
"Oh, cool," you comment, glad to hear that your father got selected for the job, "So is he going to be flying them around all of Unova on their tour?"
"I don't think so-- the job is shuffled among a bunch of different aviators for the UFS. The flight from Icirrus City to Aspertia is one of the last legs of the tour, and your father hasn't had any of their other flights to my knowledge," she says, "But hey, I think Roxie is battling trainers on her tour still for her gym leader job-- you might have an easier time challenging her than Cheren in Aspertia, because of Cipher."
"Yeah, maybe," you agree thoughtfully. Poison types are nothing to laugh at though, and while Cipher would be relatively resistant to poison, you can't say the same about your other pokemon. "Oh, I caught an eevee," you say lightly, speaking of your pokemon team, "Her name is Alexandra; we won our first trainer battle today."
"Glad to hear it," your mom says, and while you can tell she's proud of you, you can hear a hint of sadness in her voice. There's no doubt in your mind that you having an eevee reminds her of Strauss, and that tone in her voice makes you want to evolve her, as soon as possible, if Alex'll have it. You don't have a lot of money, so getting a stone is out of the question... though you've read that there are other ways to evolve eevee than purchasing a stone. You read a story once about an eevee that was struck by lightning and then evolved into a jolteon, and there was a flareon in the news that its owner swore was an eevee before the house fire that burned all of their belongings.
You decide that if you can afford an evolution stone, you'll want to evolve Alexandra into... (This is only a preliminary vote; I'll steer the plot towards one of these options and then there'll be an opportunity to confirm/deny evolution if it comes up, depending on the circumstances.)

[] You... actually have no idea. (No decision for now)
You look up thoughtfully as the monitor in the waiting room lists that your pokemon are ready for pickup, "Alright mom," you say, "My pokemon are ready for pick-up. I'll send you some pictures soon, okay?"
"Alright, Eric. I love you; visit home soon."
"I'll try, I love you Mom," you hang up and go to retrieve your pokemon. You still have a few hours of daylight to do as you wish in Aspertia City, and there's quite a few things you can do...

Cipher, Level 9 Cipher is far from the typical standard gastly, with small, squinted eyes with cat-like pupils and small imp-like horns. His teeth strike you as carnivorous, which is odd since Gastly don't need to eat in order to survive. Cipher's strategy is best described as hit and run-- he doesn't take a hit very well, and likes to take advantage of his invisibility and phasing abilities whenever he can.

Alexandra, Level 8 There's nothing really unusual about Alexandra that you've noticed, though she's more fox-like in her shape than the typical eevee. She has a longer snout, and sharper teeth that hint at a preference for meat, though her species is omnivorous. You speculate that she has some sort of fox-pokemon in her lineage; perhaps vulpix or fennekin? So far, she's not great at following orders, and is quick to get caught up in a tussle and lose focus.

...hmm. Well, Alex seems to have had Fire-type ancestors...she might get some benefits from that if she goes Flareon.
If not that...maybe Glaceon or Umbreon? Ice types aren't easy to come by, and nicely shut down both Flying and Dragon types. On the other hand, Umbreon is a beautiful little tank, especially once she learns Moonlight, and Toxic makes her a great option for attrition tactics.

Eric's injury left a scar, which will fade in time but never completely (as a harsh reminder how dangerous the pokemon world can be). The scar is on his chest and upper arm and can be hidden by wearing sleeves or a jacket! Of course, it is summer time, so it might be a little uncomfortable, but it's doable!

Vaporeon are literally tanks, and have relatively few type weaknesses. They are also spectacular utility, as they can be ridden in and out of water. Their move set is even better. Combinations like acid armor and baton pass, or even ice-type moves such as aurora beam.
Vaporeon is queen, and umbreon is only a little behind in that respect. And, if we have ice type moves, we don't need fairies to deal with dragons, which is their only use. Also fairy types make the seven year old inside cringe at the sheer lack of badassery.
I'm pretty sure Blastoise is the one that's literally a tank.
I agree with your other points, mind, but, uh, that's not how you want to use the word "literally" unless you're okay with irritating pedants like myself making completely pointless posts in order to correct you.

If you agree with me you should probably vote that way. Anyhow, it is still a literal tank. In common vernacular, especially on the internet, a tank is someone/something that can soak up a lot of damage with little to no cost to itself. Therefore vaporeon is literally a tank. Just not a tank.
