I have what I think is a reasonable request. Could we start with a deck of cards? I really can't see why wed have *any* excuse for not trying to win some of the red-shirt's wages back off of them as we kip down for the night, and poker sounds like a good way to do that.

Fair enough. I'll put it in your inventory.

Edit: Rolled for kind of deck. Standard Bicycle playing deck.

It'd be hilarious if our granddaughter had the Bloody Mess perk, and happily spends her days just splattering radroaches.

Meh, I'm not greedy. I am happy with my wounding sawed off double barrel shotgun I got at level 3. No reason for Neverending on top of that. ;)

(seriously the most OP opening to a run ever)

I am fucking jealous, man. My drops generally suck. Of course, if I really want to, I could just go grab Spray and Pray, but I think Wounding does bleed damage, with nothing resists.

Also, update's in beta! It's a bit short, but what can I say? I underestimated VATS.

I plan to not do so in the future.... :D

The Veil-Touched Rhode Island Stingwing

Bap!
This terrifying cousin to the Commonwealth Glowing variant, it's buzzing will be the first thing you hear of their attack. But just because it makes such a loud racket does not mean it can't sneak up on you. That low, droning sound it emits will encompass your hearing, making it sound like they're all around you. Mainly because they are.

Bap!
You'll look all around for these flying menaces. They may be flying in high above you, waiting to dive bomb you from above. Or it may just stay low to the ground, out of eyesight until it's too late. The fog of the Veil, their small and nimble stature, the constant assault on your senses, makes fighting them off harder. And there is never just one, no. They always come in swarms, fluttering around their entire target, quickly outnumbering it's eventual meal.

Bap!
When they go in for the kill, that's when you find their last insidious trick: Instead offilling it's target with poison, this Veil-Touched creature injects pure uranium into the unlucky victim, slowly filling the future meal with more and more radiation until it succumbs to radiation sickness and dies. From there, it will feed until they are satisfied. It may also lay its eggs in the remains, providing a feast for it's larva.

Bap!
Truly, it is a deadly example of how deadly the Veil is to anyone who would dare to cross it.

"This is just sad."

You don't even turn your head to the Red Shirt mercenary that's right next to you. You're too happy watching the scene unfold in front of you.

"That's my granddaughter! Squash that bug!"

You watch as you see the Stingwing continue to twitch uselessly as it keeps getting pelted by an electrified rubber ball attached to a string. Sheila seems like she's having the time of her fucking life as she goes to town on the offending insect, and she doesn't seem like she's intent on showing the Stingwing any mercy.

"Really? You're proud of this? It's…" The mercenary searches for a word he can use to describe the slow death the stunned bug is experiencing. "It's a fucking paddle ball."

"I'm sorry, how many Stingwings did you kill today?" You ask, keeping an eye on the situation. Little sparks flow through the insect with each strike, locking everything up inside the bug's nervous system. The bug can do nothing but accept each jolt that enters its body, slowly frying the bug to death.

"Well, none…"

"And once this one dies, how many will Sheila have killed?"

"One, but…"

"Right. Stuff it up your ass then."

"Fuck you." The Red Shirt says before walking away from you. You ignore Dickless - your new name for him - for now. Janet will probably get upset if you start a fight with the hired help, as much as Dickless probably deserves it.

You can hear cries of ecstasy and gunshots ring out from the group ahead of you. A second later, the buzzing stops, and you hear a moan of disappointment, and something about pleasing "Parva Mors"

You're not even going to ask.

"Ha! If that's the worst the Veil can throw at us, we're good!" Janet comes up to you. "No one important got injured!"

Blurk!

You look over to the side, where you see one of the Red Shirts on his knees and puking his guts out onto the irradiated dirt

Shit, he's that one who got surprised by theStingwing. Poor bastard didn't even know what was happening until it had stung him twice. You may not be a medic, but you've seen radiation sickness plenty of times to know the symptoms. And you know that most things coming from the Veil can infect people with radiation like a toxin.

"You going to make it?" You ask. Sure, he's a mercenary, but that doesn't mean you want him to die. You're not a sociopath.

"Yeah. Bug got me good, but I'll be…bluuuurgh!" What was once obviously breakfast exited back out the man's mouth in a vomitous mass. After a few moments, when he finally finishes puking, he wipes his mouth. "I'll be fine, mam"

"Bullshit. You need to get back to Providence right the fuck now."

"With all due respect, we can't turn around for just me."

No, you can't turn around just for one man. A part of you notes that he's right. He didsign up for this, and he knew the risks of the Veil. Anything that happens is mostly on him.

But you're only thirty minutes out. You didn't meet anything so far, so it should be safe to send him back. And the Rad-X wore off for him a while ago, and you don't have any. Letting him go any further through the Veil is risky.

For a moment, you consider letting Janet make the decision. She's the one who paid them. But you decide against that. Your brother made you the leader of this mission, not Janet. And while it was mainly for Sheila's benefit, these men and women are still following you.

"Damn it."

Red Shirt #1 HP: 41/41 [Over 50% Radiation Damage]

Vote: What do you do with this man?

[] He will stay on. There is at least one more encounter before he makes it to the Paw, plus background radiation. There is a good chance he dies or becomes a ghoul. If he survives to the Paw, a Side Quest opens up.

[] Send him back to Providence. Red Shirt 1 rolls for an encounter. If he meets anything hostile, he will probably die. It is 50/50. If he rolls well, he makes it back. You'll be down a gun.

[] Send him back with Dickless. Red Shirt 1 and Dickless make it back automatically. Lose a potential sidequest, but you may gain another one when you come back. You'll be down 2 guns, though.

QM Notes: Will add combat rolls tomorrow. On phone, and new place doesn't have internet yet.

Do we have any idea what the chance is that he becomes a ghoul vs dying if he stays with us?

Also, if he becomes a ghoul, does that just mean "now ghoul-shaped", or does it mean "gone crazy, will need to be put down"?

In his case, if eats enough radiation to die in the Veil, DC 50 for Ghoulification. DC 50 he remains sane.

Edit: Read the wrong stat block. Correct DC posted.

So, sounds like there's a relatively small chance of him making it out fully human. If he doesn't make that check, he's got maybe a bit better than a 1-in-4 of coming out of it as a sane ghoul (maybe 1-in-4 spot on).

If we send him back, his chance of survival goes *up* to 50/50.

If we send him back with dickless, he'll live, but we're down two guns, which might lead to more death later.

Any way we could spend more resources to improve his chances of surviving the rest of the trek with us? Extra Rad-X in the trading supplies or something? Even if it means we have to own our rather mercenary hanger-on for it, it might well be worth it.

Afraid not. Janet only had enough Rad-X for the first part of the Veil, and she didn't bring any Radaway. (There is plenty at the Paw, so don't worry on that front.) You have Stimpacs, but that's no good against radiation.

We might miss the side quest, but I can't justify taking that much of a chance of killing a man to get it. We might make things a bit dicier for ourselves getting there, but we're not so very desperate that I'm willing to damn a man to die over what we *might* encounter next.

Such is life.

Yea, there's no reason to not do this at this point.

Just feels like it makes more sense. If he stays he's dead anyway, so we're really only down 1 gun by sending Dickless back with him.
