Prologue

You're sitting at your desk, sifting through case files when the call comes. You let the phone ring twice before picking it up. You've found that picking up immediately unnerves potential clients, but making them wait for three would just be rude. "Hello, this is-"

"Terrible is what it is!" Your carefully prepared introduction is derailed immediately by your sibling's interruption. "Have you been watching the news?"

"Yes, I debated wearing a heavier coat, but decided against it. The weather predictions are wrong half the time anyways." You know that's not the spirit of the question but riling up your brother is one of the few joys you have left in life. Perfection doesn't afford much leisure time.

"You know that's not what I meant." You can practically hear his glare through the phone. "Paige Mcabee's been arrested. Charged with murder."

"That's… terrible." Your sympathy is feigned, but your brother's never been able to pick up on that in person, let alone over the phone. "She was… the girl from your… Jazz Theory Course, right?"

"I don't know whether to be more surprised that you remembered I took Jazz Theory in my Sophomore Year or that you've got no idea who Paige Mcabee is. Lord knows I've talked about her often enough."

"Hold on, is she that Canary person your agent has been trying to wrangle for your band? I thought you gave up on collaborating with her sometime last year." You remember the heated negotiations that had gotten very loud for having amounted to nothing when you had both been home over the holidays. If he weren't your brother, you might have been driven to murder for a little peace and quiet.

"Oh no, I never gave up. And her agent finally got her to agree to a joint tour. Then, not a week later, she goes and gets arrested for murder." Exasperation isn't a tone you're used to hearing from your genius little brother. It doesn't suit him.

"You want me to defend her in court, I assume? I'd certainly love to, but you know how competitive the legal world is. I can't afford to go around doing cases pro bono."

"First of all, you absolutely can afford to do a single case for free. You're loaded." counters your brother. "Second of all, while you never listen to any music from after the discovery of electricity, Canary is an excellent pop singer who has no shortage of fame and fortune from her career. Not only can she afford to pay your rates, but it'll be a rather prestigious case. National coverage, TV cameras in the room putting your handsome mug on screens across America. Think about the free publicity for the Office."

"I think I'd prefer if they kept that riff-raff out of the courtroom. The law doesn't need to be televised to be legitimate." Scorn seeps into your voice. Cameras in court is an issue you feel strongly about, but unfortunately you seem to be on the wrong side of history. They're irritatingly commonplace nowadays. "But I see your point. I'll see what I can do."

"I knew you'd see it my way. Give 'em a show, ja?" You don't even get a chance to rebut before your brother hangs up.

You put the phone down with a heavy sigh, adjust your glasses, and head out the door to the detention center. A short phone call to your contact in the police department later, you adjust your route to the PRT detention center. Apparently, Canary isn't just a stage name, but a cape name. Wonderful. At least she's not a member of the Protectorate or any kind of gang. Despite being able to control peoples' minds with her voice, Paige Mcabee is just a famous pop star.

One upside of needing to drive to the other side of the city is that it gives your police contact time to smooth your arrival over with the PRT. By the time you arrive, they're expecting you, and your meeting with Paige Mcabee is a few forms away. Two troopers lead you through the halls of their base, your perfectly fitted suit drawing some looks by virtue of not being bullet proof and accompanied by a helmet.

You're led to a large holding tank, the wall adjacent to the hallway made of some sort of clear plexiglass allowing you to see the occupant inside. Paige Mcabee looks… terrible seems generous. The clothes provided to her do nothing to compliment any figure she may have, and her banana yellow hair is more of a dirty blonde now, emphasis on dirty. More than that though, her whole posture just seems defeated, arms clutching her knees up to her chest.

She notices your presence, and you get a glimpse of some kind of horrific combination of gag and mask, likely to prevent her from speaking and using her powers. It doesn't take a genius to realize that making her stand would require energy she doesn't have, and your clients' comfort, trust, and innocence are of the utmost importance.

You squat down, putting yourself roughly on eye level with her. "Hello Ms. Mcabee. I'm Kristoph Gavin, and if you consent, I'd like to be your defense attorney."

AN: So I wanted to make an Ace Attorney crossover, and the Canary trial from Worm was the first thing that came to mind. Problem is, Canary actually did the thing she's being accused of, so Kristoph, being the only defense attorney ruthless enough to argue against the truth, was the most logical fit. Using a weird fusion of Ace Attorney's kangaroo courts and real life as laid out here.

Evidence

Attorney's Badge: Proof of your profession. You keep it well-polished and pinned to your lapel. Very presentable.

Medical Report: Paige Mcabee's ex-boyfriend suffered genital mutilation and was... self-sodomized. Somehow survived. Shows signs of being Mastered.

Proof of Hire: Extensive paperwork outlining the terms of your employment by Ms. Mcabee.

Case Summary: After a performance, Canary Mastered her boyfriend and ordered him to go fuck himself. In his Mastered state, he took this literally upon returning to his apartment. Canary stands charged with Assault with a Parahuman Ability, Sexual Assault with a Parahuman Ability, and Attempted Murder. Due to a shortage of manpower, the PRT has outsourced investigation to The Guild and the local police. Defense Attorney is Kristoph Gavin. Prosecutor is Manfred von Karma.

PRT Power Test Results: Paige Mcabee (Rogue) has been rated as a Master 8. No other powers detected. Expresses disinterest in the Protectorate.

Canary's Testimony: She performed onstage for two hours, took a break when the argument occurred, then returned for an encore of her new song Listless. During the argument, told her boyfriend to go fuck himself. Doesn't remember actively Mastering him.

Autograph: Canary's autograph, written for Klavier. Mixed in with the evidence because you only have one suitcase.

Profiles

Age: 28

You. A first-rate defense attorney and the esteemed head of Gavin Law Offices. You've never lost a case, a feat you have gone to great lengths to achieve. Your brother roped you into defending Paige Mcabee. You aim for a Not Guilty verdict, regardless of the truth.

Age: 20

Your younger brother. He's your equal as a perfectionist, but far more easy-going. His legal efforts as a prosecutor are rivaled only by the musical exploits of his band, The Gavinners. Trusts you implicitly.

Age: 23

Famous singer, rogue parahuman, and your client. Accused of attempted murder, aggravated assault with a parahuman ability, and sexual assault with a parahuman ability. She will be found Not Guilty.

Age: 18

An intern at your office. Has a knack for spotting liars and shouting very, very loudly. Your assistant on this case.

Age: 71

A living legend known as the God of Prosecutors. He's never lost a case in his decades of prosecuting cases, though there are plenty of rumors about what he did to achieve that feat.

Getting Started

Paige certainly looked glad to see you, even with half her face obscured. The two of you look at each other in silence, the moments stretching on. Your hand seizes in irritation, but you control your voice as you stand and face the PRT trooper.

"If it's not too much trouble, I'd like to actually speak to my client." The two troopers glance at each other and shuffle awkwardly for a moment.

The one you focus your gaze on seems too cowed to actually speak up. Either that or his comrade is quicker to regain his composure. "We're under orders not to remove the gag, sir."

You manage to internalize your sigh through a herculean effort of will. "And why does she need to be gagged?"

"Canary can Master anyone who hears her voice. It's for your own safety." It must have been your attention that shut the first trooper's mouth, because he's quick to speak up once you turn to look at his partner.

"Then you can cover your ears and I will take that risk myself." You can sense a rebuttal, but you cut off prosecutors for a living. They never stood a chance of getting a word in edgewise. "My job requires absolute trust in my client, as well as their consent for me to represent them in court. I already possess the former, but I require actual communication to legally obtain the latter."

"I'm sorry sir, but regulations are very clear on this matter. We can't allow her to use her powers." Your hand tenses again. It appears they can be resilient when they have procedure to fall back on.

"Can I at least get a pen and pad?" you ask with a light sigh. Exasperated, but not angry. The troopers nod, and one of them runs off. He returns after a minute or so, which you don't fill with small talk because the only person worth talking to can't respond.

"Thank you." you say as you take the paper and pen. You click it once, write your name, frown, and pull out one of your own pens. Mcabee can't talk, the least you can do is not make writing unpleasant. You slide the pen and paper through the slot in the door likely used for food, at least when the occupant is someone who's allowed to use their mouth. Mcabee takes the items like a starving man would take food and begins writing furiously.

Thank you for trying the gag. It's awful. You said you were my defense attorney?

You quickly read her message pressed up against the clear wall before responding. "If you'll have me. Otherwise I suspect you'll be assigned a public defender. And while I mean no offence to the career… you get what you pay for when it comes to defense attorneys." Mcabee begins writing, pauses, then writes something else, underlining it for emphasis.

Why are you taking my case? Who are you?

"As I said before, I am Kristoph Gavin. Though I suspect you're asking because that name means nothing to you." Not that you blame her. She's equally famous, and you only heard about her this morning. "Suffice to say I am a defense attorney of some skill. I have never lost a case, and I have no intention of starting now."

"As for why I'm interesting you your case specifically, you are quite well known, meaning a successful verdict will be beneficial for the reputation of Gavin Law Offices. In addition, a lawyer of my skill is not cheap, and your profession allows you to afford me personally." You pause a moment, before adding, "Also, my younger brother Klavier is quite the fan."

It has the desired effect, Mcabee's eyes lighting up a little at the mention of her fans. The spark is gone almost as quickly as it comes however, and she begins writing another message.

Do I need a lawyer like you? This is all one big misunderstanding. I'm innocent.

"I'd suggest it, though I'm obviously a tad biased on the matter." You laugh a little at your own joke. "But parahuman law is still very new, very ill-defined. People are afraid of parahumans, and that may supersede your own innocence in the eyes of a jury. I cannot predict the sentence you would get without me. With me, however, I will guarantee you a Not Guilty verdict."

The conviction in your voice shakes her, and she takes her time writing down the next bit, flips the page and writes something else.

I hire Kristoph Gavin as my defense attorney. Signed, Paige Mcabee.

Is that good?

You nod. "We'll obviously need to sort out the paperwork later, but for now that should work as evidence that you have an attorney. I'd like to hang onto that if I could. I'll likely have to convince more people of that fact than you will." Mcabee nods and holds the paper and pad out to the door, signaling for the PRT trooper to give it back to you.

As he unlocks the door, Mcabee flips to a new page and writes something else. The trooper is either too engaged with undoing the complicated locks on the door to notice or doesn't think anything of it. The notepad is handed off to the trooper, and then to you. You peek at what she's written.

For Klavier. Keep being awesome! Canary

It's a more ornate signature than the one she put at the bottom of her statement hiring you, the y in Canary transitioning into a stylized bird, though you get the impression she might have misjudged just how much younger than you Klavier is. With nowhere better to put it, you place the autograph in your suitcase along with the rest of your evidence.

That's going to annoy you.

"Before I go, have you met with a judge and been informed of the charges levied against you?" She shakes her head in the negative. "That will happen within twenty-four hours. There's not much you need to do except keep your composure and inform the judge that you've hired me as your lawyer. My presence isn't necessary, though I can make the time if you feel like you need the support."

You hold up a hand, reassuring her through her inability to respond. "You'll be given means to contact me if you decide I should be present. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a Not Guilty verdict to secure."

One question remains however…

Where to begin? (Choose One)

[] Go through the hoops required to actually speak with your client.

[] Read up on your client. Family, friends, foes, accomplishments, any past run-ins with the law, etc.

[] Meet and question the investigator.

[] Pore over the case files and gain an understanding of the facts.

[] Speak with the victim. Not a chance you get often, working as many homicides as you do.

[] Try to find out who's prosecuting and who's presiding.

[] Give Klavier Canary's autograph. You could ask him about Canary's career as a pretense, but really you just want this out of your suitcase.

[] Write-in. Subject to veto.

Do you go to Canary's Initial Appearance?

[] Yes, it will be useful to build a rapport with Mcabee and hear the charges yourself.

[] No, that time can be better spent. (gain one extra action on previous vote)

Eh, the appearance is a toss-up. I feel like any info we gain from it we could probably gain from reading up on the case ourselves, so unless we want some heavy rapport it doesn't feel like it's worth burning up an action. Speaking with the victim is definitely important, though as a theoretical second option I'm torn between learning more about Canary's past or the case files and getting an understanding about the present... hm. Think I'll hold on a vote.

Not parahuman centered Worm stories are rare and should be cherished. Also like that you didn't go easy boring way and gone with Wright and company as a main character

I think getting rid of the gag will give us better rapport with Canary than just listening a list of charges with her.
It also make communication easier and let us gauge PRT's opinion on the matter.

Seems interesting. Count me in!

[X] Plan Freedom of Speech

Mr abusive ex will still be around later. Meanwhile, I wouldn't discount someone on the prosecution's side altering files to help their case. We need to get at them before they do.

Kristoph man this is gonna be fun considering how good he is

I just hope we aren't going up against someone like Quinn Calle.

If I'm reading the intro right, we may be a legend in the muggle courtroom, but Kristoph's a noob in parahuman law.

And on the off chance that Cauldron decides they need those anti-Master rulings...

We've picked one hell of a first case.

I actually wonder does Kristoph's Psyche-Lock play into a resistance against Master parahumans?

Let's be honest here; This is the very first stage of the investigation stage. We should go through the basics first, make sure that we have the starting information. If we read up on our client first, we can can get family, friends, foes, and colleges. We would be able to get a list of possible people we would have to either visit, or ask information for early on.

On the Initial appearance, chances are that we would get a basic run down of the case files there, along with the charges. There, we would be able to knock down two birds with one stone.

We will have time to get through the [] Go through the hoops required to actually speak with your client. ) bureaucracy vote after we know what we are dealing with.

On the [] Pore over the case files and gain an understanding of the facts. ) vote this is also a priority, however, as I mentioned before, we would be able to most-likely get this information, or at least, some of this information, with our client and with the judge if we go to the hearing. After we know what the charges are, then we can do this. No use to go over the case files when we don't know what the charges are.

Oh yeah! Time for some serious OBJECTION'S!

And on the off chance that Cauldron decides they need those anti-Master rulings...
Cauldron *wants* Paige to be found guilty, but they don't *need* her to be found guilty. It'll be an uphill fight, but you don't need to worry about Contessa kicking down the door or anything. Farthest they'll go is getting a good prosecutor and putting some pressure on the judge to hand down a harsher sentence. They were going to get Canary some trash public defender, but Kristoph put a stop to that right quick.

I actually wonder does Kristoph's Psyche-Lock play into a resistance against Master parahumans?
Masters affect him same as anyone else. Some Thinkers might have trouble getting anything useful out of him though.

Oh praise the gods.

Although, a quest that combines courtroom antics with conspiracy investigation adventure is rather intriguing.

I'll have to think on this...

(It's worth noting that I have very very limited information on Worm and mostly am in this for the AA stuff, so expect some ignorance from me on that front.)

this is also a priority, however, as I mentioned before, we would be able to most-likely get this information, or at least, some of this information, with our client and with the judge if we go to the hearing. After we know what the charges are, then we can do this. No use to go over the case files when we don't know what the charges are.

It's possible we can discern the charges through the case file. But overall I'd prefer to optimize the amount of data we get. If we get through the hoops to get our client to talk, we can properly discern the charges after-the-fact and also have the information from the case file in case our client isn't necessarily forthright with us, which is pretty likely. And exposing lies can net us really valuable information. I can see the value in going through her history, but compared to the other options this feels like it has limited utility. I agree that going through her past is important, but I see it as lower priority compared to actually learning about the case- which could net us some persons of interest anyway- and actually being able to properly communicate with the client that we're supposed to represent.

Btw is Kristoph German or American? Im assuming german but there was that seen with Wright calling. Klaviers accent a phony

According to interviews, Klavier isn't German. His accent and habit of tossing German into his speech comes from a two year stint studying abroad in Germany. Can't blame you for assuming he's German though, since Phoenix commenting on his accent being "affected" is the only in-game hint at that.
