Eternity in all directions (PMMM fic)

The Sayaka Witch encounter is part of a head cannon I had for why Homura was attacking Kyubey in the first place despite their immortality status.

Basically the idea is that in a baseline(ish) timeline:

* Sayaka and Madoka go to the music store. Nothing immediately happens. Nearby Mami fights Gertrude.
* When Sayaka and Madoka leave the store, Kyubey lures them into a different Witch
* Since Mami is already fighting a different Witch. They are helpless
* Kyubey shows up, they wish themselves to safety. Kyubey wins.

Homura finds out that Kyubey is luring them at that time and decides to attack Kyubey as a distraction to stop them. Kyubey improvises and brings Madoka and Sayaka in to save them while they look defenseless in order to place suspicion on Homura and get Mami to hate her. This gets Madoka and Sayaka inside of Gertrude's barrier. Events of the anime ensue.

Remember:

Homura did not know Gertrude was there. And Homura explicitly stated that she attacked Kyubey to stop them from contacting Madoka and Sayaka. Thus Kyubey definitely had a plan to contact them and sticking them in Gertrude was not part of that plan (otherwise Homura wouldn't have been surprised)

A report in the shadows
???
[Redacted]

"Excuse me sir, I have an urgent report for you."

"Yes? What is it."

"Take a look at this video footage. One of our men managed to pick it up from a Japanese military base"

"Hmm. I can see why you'd want to show me. How sure are you that this footage wasn't altered or hacked?"

"I checked over the footage myself. I'm sure the Japanese will assume hacking anyways, but there weren't any of the usual signs beyond the guns disappearing. We both know better than to assume that means it's hacked."

"Of course. So I take it you suspect it's Liu?"

"Exactly. She'd absolutely be capable of pulling it off given enough time. I even have a theory on why she wanted the firepower. Take a look at this."

"Interesting. But couldn't a drop in the disappearance rate just be a coincidence?"

"It COULD be, but what are the odds of that? The Mitakihara disappearance rate starts spiking for unknown reasons, and then the day this happens it drops back down drastically. My theory is that she figured out who was responsible, stole the guns to get enough firepower and then blew the problem to smithereens. No one would have seen her doing it for obvious reasons."

"Of course. Well regardless of why she did it, there shouldn't be anyone else even capable of disappearing an entire armory. I'll approve a full investigation. Bring Si and Jiu with you along side a small task force."

"Sir? You'd let them outside?"

"We'd take proper countermeasures to ensure they can't run off or go berserk of course. But without them Liu could evade an ordinary taskforce indefinitely. I'll contact the engineering division to come up with a solution for that. I expect you to have a team ready to escort them by that point."

"Of course! I'll get right on it."

"Good luck. Now it you excuse me I have to make a few calls."

Chapter 7
March 28
Mitakihara

Mami was feeling better than she's felt in a long time. Between partnering up with Homura and meeting Sayaka, she didn't feel as alone anymore. Sayaka even invited her up to the roof to have lunch with the three of them. She'd feel bad if she had to leave Kagami alone however, since she even took the time to approach her WITHOUT magic needing to be involved. So she resolved to make arrangements for just that before the end of class.

Excuse me Sayaka. You wouldn't mind if I brought a friend from class to our lunch meeting? I wouldn't want to just leave her alone.

Mami waited awhile with no response. Luckily Homura noticed the mistake.

You can send telepathic messages just by thinking at us. It works between anyone connected by Kyubey.

Wait really!? Can you guys here this?

Of course! I can hear you perfectly fine.

Awesome! And of course your friend can join us. The more the merrier. Is she a... you know.

As far as I can tell she's a normal girl. She doesn't know about Witches so I'd keep quiet about them while around her. If you want to say something you can just use telepathy like right now.

Sounds good!

-----

"I'm going to have lunch with some new friends on the roof. Wanna come?"

Mami went to inform Kagami of her plans the second lunch was out.

"Sure! I who are these people exactly? You've never talked about any other friends."

"Well I did only meet them this weekend. Anyways you'll like them I'm sure!"

It wasn't long until they were on the roof. It was a beautiful day and the roof had a nice view of the city. Mami wasn't sure why she hadn't done this before, it was a good idea. Sayaka and Homura were already there waiting for them. When they saw the newcomers, Sayaka smiled and waved, while Homura just made eye contact in acknowledgement without changing her blank expression.

"Nice to meet you guys. I'm Kagami, a friend of Mami's. Thanks for keeping her company over the weekend!"

She walked up to Sayaka and Homura and offered the two of them a handshake. Homura just stared at her, but Sayaka cheerfully accepted it. Mami wished Homura would open up more, she was acting far too distant for her liking.

"Of course!"

After sitting down they all started trading stories, starting with how Mami, Sayaka and Homura met in the mall. Obviously the story was heavily edited, they supposedly met in the music section of the mall and ended up for reasons definitely unrelated to Witches ended up hanging out at Mami's apartment. Apparently Kagami had went to a taekwondo tournament and got first place. Mami and Homura both knew her combat hobbies, but Sayaka hadn't and was impressed to hear about it for the first time.

"That's super cool! You must be pretty strong then."

Hey Mami. Just how strong are magical girls?

Mami wasn't sure exactly how strong she was, but she knew she was much more powerful than a typical human just by being a magical girl. Plus she could make herself even stronger with active use of magic.

We are easily stronger than a normal civilian for sure, especially when we use our magic.

"Yeah, I have to be strong to compete. Everyone involved works hard, so I have to practice constantly."

So do you think you're stronger than Kagami? Without using magic I mean, obviously at full power you're stronger.

"Well if you're so strong then I, Sayaka Miki, challenge you to a duel!"

Mami rolled here eyes and smiled at Sayaka's antics.

"I accept your challenge! State your terms."

Sayaka got on her knees and put her arm on the concrete platform they were using as a makeshift table.

"Arm Wrestling tournament! Mami you can wrestle with the winner."

Alright if you insist I'll play along.

Thanks Mami!

The result of the first "match" was predictable. Kagami pretended to struggle for a few seconds before visibly relaxing and just throwing her arm to the side with what looked like barely any effort.

"Gah! You ARE strong!"

Sayaka had to shake her arm off from it being suddenly thrown around. Kagami shifted herself towards Mami while looking at her expectedly. Having already promised Sayaka she went into position for the context. Sayaka stuck her arm out in the middle like a referee before suddenly lifting it up to signal the context had begun.

"Aaaand GO!"

Mami didn't put too much force behind her arm at first, she didn't want to hurt Kagami's ego by easily beating her at something she was supposed to be the best at. Kagami was easily able to match her push and didn't go harder, she looked almost bored.

"Common Mami. I know you can do better than that. Put some real force behind it, I can take it."

Hearing that she doubled her efforts. But again Kagami easily kept up.

"Really Mami? Don't tell me you're just a weakling."

Mami? A weakling? Absolutely not. She was strong and she knew it. Bring. It. On.

While she still didn't use active magic, she otherwise stopped holding back. Kagami's hand quickly started going back in surprise until SHE put her own full force into it putting their hands back into the middle.

"THAT'S more I like it!"

Mami frowned, it should be over already. Kagami was clearly much stronger than what she had estimated her to be. Her hand was blearily even moving. But it WAS moving. Slowly, but moving all the same. After a full minute of non-stop pushing Mami was able to slowly get Kagami's hand to touch the ground. Once it was over they both relaxed and took a breather.

"MAN you were good. Clearly you're stronger than you look Mami!"

"Thanks!"

Mami couldn't explain WHY she was so strong, but Kagami didn't ask so it was fine.

Kagami glanced at the clock tower and frowned for a moment.

"Ehhh we're cutting it a bit close. We should start heading back to class. See you guys later!"

Mami started to move to follow her.

Wait. Look.

Mami and Sayaka both spun to look at Homura. Her eyes were wide, staring at the table they were using. Following her eyes to the spot the arm wrestling contest... what the hell!?

The table was cracked in two spots. Clearly where she and Kagami had their arms. But how was that possible? Forget just losing the contest, Mami could take that much force by being a magical girl, but Kagami's a normal human, her arm should have completely snapped under that much force.

"Wow, Kagami must have worked really hard if she was able to push even Mami that hard."

Sayaka's words were an understatement. She KNEW Kagami wasn't a magical girl, Kyubey confirmed it and she didn't have a tattoo or ring of any kind, let alone the magical kind. The kind of training that would let you get that strong must be insane.

"Yes. She told me about how she trains constantly. But it never quite struck me just how big a difference that training could make until now. With that amount of strength she might even be able to hold her own against a Witch's familiar."

"But not a Witch?"

"No. When I'm fighting a Witch I need a lot more than my baseline strength. My weapons and my magic both play a huge role in being able to fight them, neither of which Kagami has access too."

Sayaka nodded in understanding.

"Whelp, that was fun. See you later."

Sayaka was right, that WAS fun. They'd have to have lunch here together like this more often. Mami smiled, and walked back to class.

Fluff is hard for me to write. There was legitimately a risk of me getting stuck on the chapter. I almost made it just a few paragraphs before moving on to a completely different scene.

I had to write a draft pretty much blindly in order to get something to work with to finish the chapter. This isn't that version of course but if the dialogue feels off that's why.

Here's an idea for righting fluff for PMMM, Non canon(potentialy) omakes with Madoka and Homura, With Madoka and Kagami comforting Homura after finding out what she has went through including her issues such as Homura's Self Disgust

Chapter 8
March 30
Madoka's home

Madoka wished she could know what it was Sayaka had been getting up to. The whole week she said she was trying to keep Homura company, apparently they were doing something for an upperclassmen. She wanted to try and find Homura alone in order to ask her about magic. Kagami said she was magical and hunted Witches, so she's certainly one of the good guys. But there was just never a good time to ask. At least with her being near Sayaka all the time her friend would be safe, surely Homura would protect her from any Witches they run into.

Safety or now however, Sayaka was still hanging out with her and Madoka wasn't invited. Of course Sayaka was allowed to make new friends, there was no way Madoka was going to get in her way or try to discourage her. But she that didn't mean she wasn't feeling left out. Hitomi had her after school classes so she wasn't an option either. So now instead of getting to hang out with her friends she had nothing better to do than just go straight home after school.

"I'm home"

Her mom was still at work of course, but her dad and little brother were both home. She didn't see where they were however, probably busy then, so Madoka just went to her room to relax and then do some homework. Feeling a bit dejected she sat down on her bed and hugged her favorite stuffed animal. She always loved her plushies. Her green bear, a bunny cat hybrid with floating rings, a rabbit with a dress, a- wait hold on. Floating rings? Madoka looked over her shelf more carefully, and sure enough there was a cat bunny hybrid with bright gold rings seemingly held up by nothing. It even cocked it's head and MY GOD THAT'S NOT A PLUSHIE.

Hello Madoka, my name is Kyubey.

Thoroughly freaked out, Madoka quickly pulled out her cell phone and called Kagami.

It's ok Madoka. I'm not here to hurt you, in fact I have an offer to make you.

Kagami answered on the second ring. Madoka didn't wait for her to say anything.

"Help! A weird creature thing appeared into my house and it's in my head! Idontknowwhattodopleasehelp!!!"

You don't need to do anything, I just want to talk to you Madoka

"Ok hold on now, slow down and explain what exactly is going on. I'm on my way and will be there in a few minutes. Please describe the creature."

"Um, well it's small and white. It has golden rings around it's ears, uhhh it has red eyes."

"Is it Kyubey?"

The creature did introduce itself, Madoka wasn't really listening to it over her own panicking but she thought she heard something about Kyubey.

"I think so?"

"Then you're fine. Just try to calm down and don't accept anything from it until I get there. You'll be fine, he isn't going to eat you or whatever. Can you do that for me?"

Madoka nodded before remembering that she was on a phone call.

"Y-yes."

"Good. I'll see you soon then."

Kagami hung up the call. Madoka sighed in relief, if Kagami says this mysterious Kyubey thing was safe then that was good enough for her.

You calmed down?

Madoka wasn't completely calm yet, but she nodded anyways.

As I was saying, I have an offer for you

Kagami said not to accept any offers, but she should at least hear them out right?

"What kind of offer?"

I will grant you one wish.

"A wish?"

Yes! Anything you-

Kyubey's sentence was cut off by the doorbell ringing. That must be Kagami! Madoka got up to let her in, quickly reaching the door to see her waiting outside.

"Hi! Please come in!"

Kagami stepped in and took her shoes off before following her back to her room.

"So what has Kyubey told you so far?"

"Something about a wish. You came in right as they were explaining it."

Kagami just nodded her head and entered the room. When they walked in Kagami and Kyubey immediately made eye contact.

"Hey Kyubey."

Hello Kagami. What brings you here?

Madoka quickly interjected.

"Oh, she's the person I called earlier!"

You two know each other?

"Yes! She saved me from a witch about a week ago."

That should make this easy to explain. In order to fight the Witches, some girls such as you have the potential to become magical girls. In exchange for the power and responsibility to fight the Witches, I grant you your wish.

Madoka would likely have felt overwhelmed by this if it weren't for the fact that this sounded a lot like those mages Kagami told her about earlier. She looked at Kagami, was she a magical girl? If not did she have potential to be one? And how would she fight Witches if she wasn't one?

"Basically, if you accept their deal, they would put your soul into a device called a soul gem. This would give you full access to your magical reserves at the cost of generating corruption. The Witches drop something called a grief seed that can remove this corruption."

To demonstrate she pulled out a fancy black trinket from her pocket.

"This is a grief seed by the way."

After putting it back Madoka took a moment to let all of that sink in. They'd remove your soul? Put it in some kind of gem? That certainly didn't sound good, and corruption isn't something you'd want to let anywhere NEAR your soul.

"Hold on, full access? Doesn't that imply I have some level of access right now?"

She certainly hasn't ever noticed herself doing any magic.

"Of course! Everyone does. It's called adrenaline. In an emergency your body sends a bit of magic to temporarily empower you. Since most people don't have a ton of magic to work with this process can't use very much magic at once, which is why you can't shoot lasers or whatever."

You are remarkably well informed Kagami. I don't recall telling you about any of this.

"Thanks! Regarding adrenaline, someone I used to know was writing a thesis on how adrenaline works. So I got the chance to ask him about it. Apparently it's capable of not just boosting your strength but also your toughness and can even delay starvation. It's not particularly effective however, so even with your larger reserves you'd still eventually starve to death. Not that you need to worry about that."

...

Well that was.... interesting. Still, the whole Wish thing was something Madoka would have to consider.

"So Kyubey. Is it ok if I think about it? I don't think I'm ready for anything like that, plus I don't even know what Wish I'd want."

That's perfectly fine. Whenever you're ready just let me know what your wish is and I'll complete the contract.

After saying that Kyubey went to the window and then just... vanished. The window didn't even open.

"Hey Kagami. What do you think? Should I make a contract."

Kagami was quiet for a moment, considering her question.

"Hard to say. It certainly has it's benefits, but I'm not sure you're cut out for the constant fighting that comes with the job. Even if Kyubey can give you the physical capability, there is also the emotional toll. I've been fighting for a long time now so I'm used to it. But until a week ago I doubt you've ever been in any serious danger so the stress could easily get to you. It's certainly not something you should take lightly. Plus there's the whole soul corruption thing, I wouldn't take his deal until we know how that works exactly."

"Oh..."

With nothing left to talk about Kagami got up to leave.

"Wait! Would you like to stay for dinner?"

Kagami just smiled but kept moving.

"Sorry but no. I haven't finished my hunting for the day."

"Awww. How many Witches do you usually kill in a day anyways?"

"About six to eight. Sometimes up to ten if I'm lucky. Anyways see you around!"

With Kagami gone, Madoka went back to her bed and collapsed. With everything she's just learned there was no way she was getting any homework done tonight. It'd be a miracle if she could even get some sleep.

Regarding the adrenalin thing, it's part of another head cannon of mine.

Specifically, consider the fact that Humans had magical potential before the incubators showed up. Given the way evolution works, Humans wouldn't have magic if there wasn't some sort of benefit to having it. And since Witches, contracts ect only became a thing when the incubators showed up that means it's use case has to effect mundane life in some way.

Remember, it's not just the potential magical girls that have magic potential. It's just that only potential magical girls have ENOUGH magic to be worth harvesting. But the human species as a whole is magical even when you disregard the outliers.

When you think about what abilities magical girls have in common: Enhanced durability, healing, super strength, super speed, fast reflexes ect. It would make sense for these functions to be properties inherent to magic rather than being a property of the contract. Contrast transformation outfits, soul gems, magic weapons and personalized abilities. Which are all unlikely to be something magic does naturally.

So, working backwards that means some of these common abilities would be something that normal people have downscaled access to. The concept of adrenaline matches with these perfectly. Magic's properties are clearly focused on combat, and adrenaline activates when we need an immediate power boost in a pinch. So person is in trouble and then the body lets magic flow around and do it's thing, boosting them a bit to hopefully get out of danger.

Obviously the effect isn't strong enough to be obviously supernatural, 1.5x multiplier tops, but for ancient humans every bit of strength can mean the difference between eating and being eaten by a lion.

Since the physical process of adrenaline flowing through the body is optimized for a typical human, a potential magical girl such as Madoka can't use this system to make full use of her magic.

For example lets say a normal human has 10 mana. Adrenaline would use 1 mana per minute to boost the human. Madoka would have access to 1000000000000 mana because she's awesome (note: number was made up on the spot and doesn't reflect her actual relative mana levels), but her body is still the same as everyone elses, so she can still only use 1 mana per minute in an emergency.

So no, she can't suddenly be invincible because she's panicking or whatever.

As for why the entire premise can work when adrenaline is a real concept that isn't magical? Simple, this is not the real world. For magic to be real, something we think is true about physics must be wrong. So it's not crazy to think that creatures in a world where magic exists would evolve slightly differently as a result.

...6 to 8 in a day. I'm not sure what a normal MG's daily Witch kill is like, but that seems nuts. Not just that she can kill that many quick enough to fit in a day, but that she can even find that many. I mean, maybe you could chock that up to incoming spinney Witch, but that's still a concerning number of Witches. Actually, now that I think about it; how many Grief Seeds does have, and what does she do with them? It's kind of amazing how many questions that one sentence created.

Yeah, that's a lot even by Kamihama standards, much less Mitakihara. Either she's sucking all the metaphorical oxygen out of the area for the local magical girls or she's counting familiars.

I'd like to point out that this isn't actually new information. During the prologue Kagami had 30 Witches marked on her map, which were the witches she had hunted.

Since it was over a 5 day period, that means she was averaging 6 Witches per day. Note how it was a big enough impact on the Witch population that Kyoko noticed it BEFORE getting any direct proof. So yes, if Kagami had stayed she would have starved Kyoko.

It's possible that Kyuubey is deliberately spamming the creation of Witches in Mitakihara in order to try and study Kagami's abilities.

He probably has to personally create most of the Witches in Mitakihara anyway, since Mami (unlike most magical girls) kills familiars before they can evolve into Witches.

Actually there is another thing, Grief Seeds regenerate Witches when exposed to negative energy which is why they are given to Incubators, chances are in order to provide a limited source to get contractors up and running, they likely reuse Witches they have the Seeds for

Chapter 9
April 4
Mitakihara

Madoka was probably annoyed, and Sayaka had a pretty good idea why too. It was all her fault, she was going with Mami and Homura to shadow their Witch hunts each day last week. She resolved to make it up with her. Sayaka already had plans to see Kyousuke at the hospital, but afterwards she didn't have any particular plans. Plus apparently Mami wasn't going hunting that day until later in the night, something about a school project? So immediately after school ended Sayaka went to Madoka to invite her into her plans.

"Hey Madoka. I'm going to go see Kyousuke today, you should come with me, we can hang out afterwards!"

Madoka's face visibly lit up when she heard that, clearly Sayaka made the right decision. Horary for friendship!

"Of course! I'd love to come!"

They left immediately. The hospital had strict visiting hours so they couldn't be delayed.

-----

"I'm sorry but Kyousuke isn't open to visitors right now?"

"But-"

"Sorry, I'll be sure to let him know you two stopped by."

They came all this way and he wasn't even accepting visitors. That's really annoying, Sayaka had no idea why he wouldn't want to see them too. Did something happen? She didn't know and the Nurses wouldn't tell them, it was worrying the heck out of her. She sighed as they walked out.

"Well that was a bust. At least we can still hang out."

"Yeah. I wonder why he didn't want to see anyone?"

"I know right!? I just hope he's ok."

As they were walking through the parking lot Sayaka realized Madoka had lagged behind a bit and was no longer standing next to her. Instead Madoka was standing in front of a bike rack along the side of the building. She was holding something Sayaka couldn't see.

"Find something Madoka?"

Her head snapped up, she quickly pocketed whatever it was and gave an obviously fake smile.

"What? Um... nothing. Lets go!"

Well that was weird. Oh well, Madoka could be stubborn, so Sayaka knew better than to press. She'd tell her if it was important right?

"Hey Sayaka."

"Yes?

"What exactly have you been doing all last week?"

Well that wasn't an easy question to answer. She couldn't just say she'd been going on Witch hunts, that was supposed to be secret. But she didn't want to lie to her friend either.

"I was just trying to keep Homur...a..."

Sayaka trailed off. Something was wrong, Madoka seemed to be glowing? No, not Madoka, just her pocket.

"Madoka?"

Sayaka pointed at where the glow was originating from. Madoka went wide eyed and pulled it out. It was a grief seed! How the heck did she get one of those? And why was it glowing like that? The glowing intensified further and the world started to fade away. They were being pulled into a labyrinth! Apparently a candy themed one if all the frosting everywhere was any indication. With Mami not even hunting, and Homura who knows where the odds of a rescue were very slim, they were doomed! She didn't even know where Kyubey was if she wanted to Wish her way out of harms way.

Not to mention Madoka who was almost certainly panicking too. Sayaka looked to her companion, she had pulled out her phone. Who could she possibly call? Did she have Homura's number? Even if she did why would she call her? Madoka shouldn't know that Homura is a magical girl.

"Kagami! Come quickly! You need to help us! I'm just outside of the Mitakihara Hospital! Sayaka is here with me!"

Wait she called Kagami? Since when did Madoka and Kagami know each other!? Well regardless that wasn't particularly helpful, Kagami isn't a magical girl. She is strong so maybe she could buy time but ultimately they'd need Homura or Mami. Wait, if she's on the phone...

"Madoka! Tell Kagami to bring Mami over here!"

Madoka looked at her like she was crazy.

"Who's Mami? Anyways Kagami will get us out of here soon, I can't afford to delay her. Plus we can't just be standing here! We need to hide!"

Madoka grabbed Sayaka's arm and started running around to find somewhere to lay low. Sayaka wanted to trust her friend, but this just wasn't something an ordinary Human could help them with. So if they couldn't get Magical help they were doomed. She had to get her friend to understand that.

"Madoka, this isn't something Kagami can handle. You have to tell her to get Mami. She's the girl I've been helping out after school, she can help us."

Madoka stopped running when she heard that.

"Sayaka. Do you know where we are right now."

"Yeah. We are in a Witches Labyrinth."

Madoka looked thoughtfully before continuing.

"Mami is a magical girl isn't she."

What. How would Madoka know what a magical girl is? How long has she known!?

"Y-yeah... how do you know that?"

"Because it explains everything. Why you've been so distant lately, why you're insisting that Mami can help and why you think Kagami can't. But you're wrong. Kagami may not be a magical girl, but she's more than capable of killing a Witch. She's saved me from a labyrinth before and she's told me that she hunts a lot of Witches every day. She can save us, I'm sure of it!"

If she knew all along, then there's really nothing more to say. Assuming Madoka was telling the truth, and Sayaka knew Madoka would never lie to her, Kagami should be able to take out the Witch no problem. They'd be fine, they'd live through this.

About a minute later they heard footsteps running right towards them. Kagami was here at last. Unlike on the roof she was wearing a hoodie and had a sword pointing to the side on her back.

"Sorry it took me so long. I'm here now, follow me."

She slowed down so they could keep up, but kept walking. Sayaka had, a lot of questions.

"So Kagami. How long have you been hunting Witches for?"

"I see Madoka brought you up to speed then. I've been hunting since the 13th last month. Don't worry, the Witches haven't been able to give me any trouble. You're in good hands."

"Why didn't you say anything about it at lunch then."

"I'm not supposed to talk about Witches around those not already in the know."

Sayaka frowned. That didn't seem right. She WAS already knowledgeable about Witches.

"But I am in the know? Shouldn't I be one of the people you are allowed to talk to?"

"Oh? You knew? Then why didn't you tell ME?"

"Because..."

Because She didn't know Kagami knew.

"Oh... yeah I guess that makes sense."

Of course she wouldn't talk. From Kagami's perspective Sayaka was just a normal girl that happened to hang out with them. Eventually they reached what looked like a giant glowing grief seed inside a cage.

"Is that... the Witch?"

Kagami's eyes narrowed.

"It certainly feels like a Witch."

Feels? Kagami unsheathed her sword and quickly slashed away the bars. Once the grief seed was exposed she stabbed directly into hit. Rather than breaking, it glowed even brighter until the three of them were completely blinded by the light. When they could see again, the area had completely changed. It was a large room full of tables and sweets. There was also a plushie in the distance, the Witch.

Kagami quickly dashed in to cover the distance. The Witch barely even reacted until she bisected it in half, decapitating it. The Witch started to float in half, leaving it's bottom half behind, until suddenly the head started to expand. Then all at once a colorful wormlike monster shot out of it's face, instantly reaching where Kagami was standing and biting her. Then.... nothing. There was no crunch, no body, nothing. Kagami was just... gone. The Witch was clearly confused by this, looking around for it's prey.

"Over here."

On the Witches back Kagami could be seen standing up before quickly starting to stab the Witch. It writhed in pain before shedding it's skin entirely, a copy of itself popping out to continue the fight. This time when it dashed into Kagami she was already dodging.

"Heh. That trick won't work twice."

It was only a matter of time now before the Witch was killed.

-----

Homura knew that some things just happened every timeline, no matter how messed up things got. The sweets witch was one of them. It's exact location seemed to have changed for some reason, but it was still there as always. The labyrinth was in a docile state when she entered, which makes sense considering the Witch wasn't fully hatched yet. It was very quiet, more quiet then usual even. Weren't there usually more familiars than this? More importantly however, she hadn't encountered Mami yet. Homura knew Mami wouldn't be able to beat this Witch, so it was very important that Homura kills the Witch before it could kill her.

Luckily she seemed to have gotten to the Witch in time for that this timeline. It was almost boring wandering through the empty labyrinth, but she knew that boring was much better than any of the alternatives.

Suddenly the area lit up, a bunch of Familiars showed up too, clearly in a frenzy. The Witch was awake. Not a problem, since Mami wasn't here there should be no particular hurry to take it out. She started running but didn't use magic, taking out familiars in her path with some well placed bullets. She already knew this labyrinth well, so it only took about 5 minutes for her to reach the inner portion of the labyrinth where the Witch was.

Sayaka and Madoka were there and she could hear fighting. That was both good and bad. Good because it means whoever was fighting the Witch wasn't dead yet, bad because it means she was somehow wrong about getting there first. She moved in to get a better look at the fight, ignoring Sayaka and Madoka exclaiming about her sudden appearance.

It was Kagami. Of course it was, she was clearly an anomaly of some kind. But how was she able to hold her own against the Sweets Witch? She was moving fast of course, but the Witch was also acting a bit strangely. She knew from experience that this particular Witch could predict the movement of it's prey. Yet each time it would fall short of biting Kagami, like the Witch was aiming where she was instead of where she was moving to. Plus, Kagami's counter attacks were cutting much deeper than a sword that size had any right to.

Kagami clearly didn't need her help, this fight was almost over. The Witch tried to use it's tail to swipe at her in desperation, but she easily jumped over it. A few more quick slashes and the fight was over. The labyrinth faded away and Kagami took the grief seed.

"So it was you Kagami. You're the one that was hunting all of those Witches."

Kagami snapped up to look at Homura.

"Right you are. Good to see you too Homura."

She started to walk off, but Homura firmly grabbed her arm before she could get very far.

"We need to have a talk."

"Indeed we do. Everyone meet up at my place. Clearly we need to compare notes."

The calm before the storm
???
Japan

"Hey Si. We're here!"

The while haired girl woke up slowly, taking a moment to recognize her surroundings again after having fallen asleep on the flight.

"Morning Jiu."

"It's the afternoon."

"Whatever, jetlag."

"Oh stop complaining it's only an hour difference."

They both stepped out of the jet, closely followed behind by their retainers. The majority of the personnel involved were either to keep the two girls on a leach or to gather intelligence on Liu. Jiu knew anyone else would be useless in combat. Knowing Liu she'd just trick them into shooting each other, or worse shooting the two of them.

She hopped to see Liu again, the girl was always an interesting sparing partner. She always made it so hard to keep track of what was around her. She could only win at all because her ability just so happened to hard-counter Liu's. Of course, that was why she and Si were the ones picked for this. While a few of the others are technically more capable in combat, their sense doesn't counteract Liu properly, so they'd just find themselves hitting thin air or committing friendly fire.

More worryingly however was the matter of Liu's escape. The camera's didn't see her in action, but that was nothing new. What WAS worrying however was the solid steel doors having a hole burned into them, large enough for her to simply walk through. If she was holding back the ability to do something like that during training then Jiu wasn't sure she liked her odds. Luckily with Si there as well they should still be able to handle her in a 2v1.

"You think we'll find her?"

"Of course we will! She can't hide from us forever!"

"Not what I mean. Do you think we will find her HERE?"

"Hard to say. I certainly hope so."

Si nodded in agreement.

"She was indeed one of the better training partners."

"Even better than me?"

She glared right at her.

"Way better."

"Oh? You wanna bet?"

"Bring it on tough girl."

Preforming a quick scan around the area Jiu couldn't feel anyone nearby, nor were there any camera's she could sense that would see them. Since the coast was clear she let some sparks fly to signal she was accepting the challenge. She could feel the air start to gather around Si in response.

"Ladies. Settle down, you have a job to do."

They let everything fade upon hearing that. Stupid retainers, ruining their fun.

"Fine. But mark my words Si, first thing I'm doing when we get back home is beating the shit out of you."

"I'd like to see you try."

Oh this trip is going to be FUN.

Chapter 10
April 4
Apartment Complex

Mami heard a knock on her door.

"Mami it's me, Kagami. We need to talk."

Well that was a little ominous. Still, Kagami was a friend, she was certainly welcome. Mami opened the door to reveal not just Kagami, but also Homura, Sayaka and a pink haired girl she didn't recognize.

"Are you free? We are having a bit of a Q&A session in my apartment and you're invited."

"Q&A?"

"About Witches."

Mami felt her heart skip a beat. How did she know? Was she caught in a barrier? Homura's presence would explain her survival. Yeah, that was probably it.

"Alright then."

-----

Mami found Kagami's apartment to be quite barren compared to her own. Sure it wasn't COMPLETELY empty. Some trophies, a sword rack and a map were along the walls. But compared to her own apartment which had fancy rugs, lights plushies ect everywhere, this was nothing. Then again she DID just move in only a few weeks ago, so it does make sense. Kagami gestured between Mami and the pink haired girl.

"By the way, Madoka meet Mami, Mami meet Madoka."

While everyone was taking a seat, Kagami marked the map with a dot by the hospital. It had a lot of dots on there, Mami wasn't sure what to make of it.

"That's up with the map?"

"I've been marking it with the location of all the Witches I've fought."

That... can't be right. First of all Kagami wasn't a magical girl, so she shouldn't be physically capable of fighting Witches effectively. And even if she could, there were far too many dots on that map. Even if she assumed that Kagami was hunting every single day since she moved to Mitakihara it would still imply that she was hunting over four times as many Witches as she was. If it counted familiars it would make a bit more sense, but even then it would still be an extremely large kill count.

"You're saying you killed all of these Witches yourself? I'm sorry but I find that a bit hard to believe."

Madoka was quick to jump to Kagami's defense.

"Of course she did! She's even saved me from a couple of Witches. She's amazing!"

Sayaka was nodding along in confirmation. Even Homura seemed to be agreeing with the sentiment.

"If you'd like I can show you proof later. But for now I have some questions. For starters can you explain what exactly the deal with corruption is?"

Mami hadn't ever actually heard the term corruption used to describe anything. Was she referring to a Witches kiss?

"Corruption?"

"Yeah, like the black stuff that accumulates in your soul gem. I understand that it somehow interferes with mana regeneration and can be removed with grief seeds, but I don't know what it actually IS."

Oh!

"You mean grief?"

"Maybe? Whatever it is grief seeds remove."

"It's called grief. It slowly accumulates over time and whenever a magical girl uses their magic. If you accumulate too much you cease to be a magical girl."

"Wait how does that work exactly? What happens to your soul?"

Huh? Kagami wasn't making any sense. What does your soul have to do with anything?

"I'm not sure I understand your question. Could you please clarify?"

"Ok sure, so your a magical girl because you have a soul gem right?"

"Yes?"

"Cool, so your soul gem is filled up entirely with grief, now what? Does it break? Does it go dim and your soul is returned to your body? Does it drive you insane or something?"

Mami hadn't actually considered what happens to a fully blackened soul gem. None of these sounded quite right. The soul gem just breaking would make the most sense out of those, but she wasn't certain and she obviously wasn't about to start experimenting. Since she didn't know she just shook her head. Homura was the next person to speak up.

"Kagami. Let me see your sword."

Pulling out her rapier she held it out hilt first for Homura to hold.

"Sure, pass it around while your at it."

Homura inspected the sword for a second. She put a bit of force on the blade, it barely bended at all. Mami took the sword next. It was much heavier than it looked, weren't swords supposed to be as light as possible?

"What is this sword made out of?"

"Tungsten alloy."

Mami didn't know metallurgy very well, so she didn't know how good a tungsten sword was. But she did know that the material was quite heavy, which easily explained the weight she noticed. Sayaka seemed excited by the concept of a cool sword.

"Yo Mami! Let me see it!"

"Sure! Just be careful, it's very heavy."

Sayaka accepted the sword and then immediately almost dropped it. She recovered quickly, but was still obviously struggling to hold it.

"Man this thing IS heavy! Just how much does this weigh?"

Kagami smiled, clearly amused by her struggles, but answered anyways while taking the sword back from Sayaka.

"A bit over 12 pounds. I know, it's quite heavy for a sword. But I wanted to get the strongest sword possible."

While Kagami was putting the sword back on it's sword rack Homura moved to ask her next question.

"How is it you are able to find Witches?"

Kagami moved over to her map, indicating for them to look it over.

"Using this map I can estimate where Witches are likely to be at any given moment. This city in particular seems to be a hotspot of Witch activity. Additionally, when a Witch tries to pull in a victim it can give away it's location in the process."

Would that actually work? Mami knew Witch appearances weren't truly random, so it would make sense that with enough data you could figure out a pattern in order to reliably predict where a Witch would spawn. This did of course beg the question of how she was able to get any data points in the first place. She'd need to have found a lot of Witches by pure chance before a map like this would start being useful. Such a project should take years, and yet she's claiming to have this many Witch kills in under a month. More pressing however would be the overall quantity of Witches in general. Mitakihara wasn't supposed to be a Witch hotspot. If what she was saying was true then that could only mean one thing: Walpurgisnacht was coming.

Not too much was known about the Witch, but what WAS known was terrifying. Giant, powerful and practically invincible, the Witch didn't even bother to hide in a barrier, instead it would just attack the real world directly. Normal humans couldn't even see the Witch, but the danger was big enough to level entire cities by itself. A drastic rise in Witch activity was said to be a sign of Walpurgisnacht's approach.

Hey Homura. Have you heard of Walpurgisnacht?

I have. It's coming.

Looks like Homura came to the same conclusion she did. With that in mind they needed to start preparing ASAP.

"Listen up girls, here's the deal. Kagami, if what you are saying is true there is a good chance a Witch called Walpurgisnacht is going to come here. If it does, and it isn't opposed it's going to destroy the entire city. As such, starting tomorrow we are going to start training. Madoka, Sayaka, if you are going to make a contract then you should do so sooner rather than later. Normally I'd suggest waiting, but with Walpurgisnacht coming that might not be a good idea. Kagami, after school tomorrow I want you to show me exactly how you hunt. Got it?"

"Got it"

Madoka, Sayaka and Kagami all voiced their approval to the plan at once. Homura just stood there silently, but didn't vocally object. On that note the conversation died down. Homura escorted Madoka and Sayaka back home, while Mami went to her apartment to get some dinner. The Witch hunt tonight could wait, she needed to plan for what was coming.

BTW, anyone that happens to know how swords work would know that saying her sword is Tungsten would create more questions than it answers. If you ignore the weight problem then such a sword would be great for stabbing, but awful for slashing.

The low flexibility makes it very brittle, so it would snap relatively easily. Making it an alloy helps with that a bit but can only do so much.

There's also the weight problem on top of this, which is why not even rapiers are made of tungsten normally. Specifically tungsten is about 3 times heavier than the same volume of steel. Unless you have super strength (which to be fair Kagami obviously does) you wouldn't be able to preform a proper stab.

The upside is that Tungsten metal can put a LOT of force into a stab, at least in principle. But otherwise it's not something you'd normally use as a sword material.

I mean, It's not the worst thing you could alloy iron with, especially if it's also a chromium alloy, although there are significantly better options for a sword in specific. Of course, if the alloy is tungsten primary I'd be giving her even more of a side eye, there's no good reason for that. Unless there's something specific about the magic traits of tungsten alloys there's not much to reccomend it over eg spring steel for this, we have some very good modern steelworking available.

I wonder what is Homura thinking, if she considers telling the witchbomb to Kagami or the fact Mami doesn't know either of the bombs. Kagami could be safe since she isn't magical girl but she's an extraneous figure in the timeline.

I can't help but read this like you are an evil supervillain in a big swirly chair petting a cat with your face obscured, talking about the new super hero in town.
I don't have a cat, so my vaporeaon plushie will have to do. Otherwise the option would be a Kyubey, which would be more apropiate since everybody knows the cat is the real mastermind.
