It was just an average day for Kyubey, trying to convince a normal girl named Kagami Shado to turn into a magical girl.
Maybe they were a bit too hasty in calling her "normal".
Prologue 1
Location
Wayland, Massachusetts
March 13
Kazamino city

Kyubey had hit the jackpot. When selecting Magical Girl candidates there are a handful of metrics used, raw potential, their personality, their circumstances and their connections. All of these play a role in how likely a girl is to accept their deal and how much Kyubey is likely to get out of the contract.

Luckily, Kyubey had just found someone that met all of the criteria absolutely perfectly. Kagami Shado, an orphan living in Kazamino. She doesn't go to school and goes to various fighting tournaments to get money. Fencing, Kendo, Martial Arts, any way she can make money off combat she takes full advantage of. Given her apparent love of combat, convincing her to battle witches should be no problem. Not to mention her magical potential is incredible, about as much as a Princess back when they were still relatively common.

Right now she was on her way back to her apartment from such a tournament, she locked the door behind her as she entered of course, but that was hardly an issue as it was a simple matter to simply teleport inside.

Kagami had just entered her cheap apartment and was still hanging up her hoodie when Kyubey teleported in, just out of view.

Hello Kagami.

To her credit, Kagami didn't flinch. Odd, telepathy tends to be quite a surprise to the uninitiated. Kagami was quickly able to locate Kyubey on the floor, tail swishing to look as cute as possible.

"What do you want."

She almost sounded bored. Like there was nothing strange at all about a telepathic alien breaking into your house.

My name is Kyubey! I've come to ask you for a favor. I'd like you to make a contract with me and become a magical girl!

Hearing that, her jaw hung slightly opened for several seconds. Afterwards she just shook her head and seemed to suppress a laugh.

"Magical girl? Really!? That seems a bit silly."

It's true! I have the power to transform you into a magical girl! All you have to do is make a wish, I'll grant the wish and then you'll be turned into a magical girl.

"Alright fine I'll bite. Lets say all of this is true, what do you get out of this exactly?"

As a magical girl, it will be your duty to hunt monsters known as Witches. Terrible creatures that feed on the vulnerable, many mysterious deaths around the world are caused by Witches and as such they need to be stopped. That's where you come in, magical girls have special powers that allow them to fight Witches.

"What kind of powers?"

That varies from person to person. But all magical girls have some level of super strength and faster healing. And while transformed you get a special weapon suited specifically to you.

"And just where are these witches exactly?"

Another oddity, most people ask WHAT they are before WHERE they are.

They hide in labyrinths of their own creation. When hunting humans they lure their prey in and trap them there before killing them. Once you've contracted with me you will receive a soul gem, which will help guide you towards these labyrinths.

She subtly frowned on hearing the word "soul gem". But didn't comment on it.

"So are YOU able to locate these labyrinths?"

Kyubey was absolutely capable of doing this. They have used that ability several times to lure potentials into a labyrinth in order to force a contract.

I am, but I would still recommend using your soul gem to locate witches, as I cannot always be available and your soul gem would be sufficient.

"Excellent. Then show me one of these witches. I want to see one for myself."

That gave Kyubey pause, only someone suicidal would willingly enter a witch labyrinth without being a magical girl or being with a magical girl. It was just asking to get themselves killed. But there wasn't much reason to point this out, after all it would be easy to convince them to contract once their life was on the line.

Very well then, I can do that. When would you like to go?

"In just a second."

She walked into another room. The apartment was small, so other than the main entrance they were standing in there was only a kitchen and a bedroom. Kyubey followed her into the bedroom and saw a shelf full of trophies on one of the walls. On the opposite side however was a sword mounted on a wall, a rapier, alongside it's sheath, both of which Kagami removed and strapped around her waist with the sword sticking out to the side from her back. There wasn't much chance of this being meaningful, an ordinary sword would simply snap under the strength of a typical witch and would offer very little protection given how fast their attacks are. At best it might be able to harm a familiar.

"I'm ready."

-----

Under Kyubey's direction, the two managed to find themselves inside of a witch's labyrinth fairly quickly. It was very similar to a jungle, except the trees were all the wrong color and there was no sky, making the entire place very dark. There was SOME light, but only because a few of the plants were glowing an ominous purple. A path was cutting across the treeline, presumably it would lead to the witch.

Just say the word and I'll make you a magical girl, you'll be able to take out this labyrinth's witch no problem if you do.

"Noted"

And with that she pressed on, walking slowly and keeping an eye out for danger. It wasn't long before the first few familiars showed up, mish-mash's of various animals with color pallets selected almost at random. Kagami immediately drew her sword, ready to intercept any attackers, but otherwise continued walking.

You aren't thinking that sword of yours is enough to take out the witch are you? I'd hate for you to get yourself killed because of that.

"I'll be fine. I know what I'm doing."

The familiar closest to the path, a blue tiger with lion paws and large eagle wings, decided now as the time to strike, and pounced. However before it could hit Kagami she jumped out of the way, transitioning into a lunge the second she landed. With her fast movement she was able to hit the familiar as it was landing with a clean stab. By the time the familiar could turn to face her new location, she had already pulled out her sword and was preforming her next attack, this time a swing which cut it's head in half, killing it for good.

Well that was certainly impressive. Kyubey thought for sure that she would at least be injured by now, while familiars are nothing to a magical girl they are still a serious threat to a normal human.

The rest of the familiars went in after their fallen brethren, unfortunately for them Kagami was ready and effortlessly dodged their attacks. Ducking and weaving between them while getting attacks in during the brief moments between their strikes she was able to dispatch all of the familiars that were attacking her fairly quickly. If Kyubey could feel they would have called the event beautiful. She didn't even seem to be winded at all.

It wasn't long before she reached with witch's lair. A clearing with a large plant monster, it's roots sticking out of the ground as dangerous thorny vines. The entire creature was moving as Kagami was watching from outside the arena.

I was serious earlier Kagami. You need to make a contract with me if you want to win this fight. Just make a wish, any wish!

She simply smirked, and confidently leaped towards the witch. The monster easily countered her charge with a wall of vines easily more than twice her height. A split seconds before the vines reached her, she jumped straight over the wall, cutting straight through the top half of the wall at the same time by spinning in mid-air with her sword.

What

That is not supposed to be possible without magic. Unlike the familiars which were made of flesh, those vines are made of solid wood. You can't just cut through that with a rapier even under ideal circumstances. How is the rapier not broken? Thinking back, Kyubey realized that the sword hasn't even been bending at all. Normally rapiers have to be able to bend a lot in order to avoid snapping due to their thin blades, but this one remained perfectly stiff. There was no way that was a normal sword, not to mention jumping over twice your own height in a single bound is usually a feat restricted to those with magical powers. Just how is she able to do these tricks?

From there she simply got in close and started cutting it apart, piece by piece, turning the fight into a battle of attrition. Before too long the witch was completely dismantled and the labyrinth faded away, leaving only the witch's grief seed behind. Noticing it Kagami picked it up and inspected it closely.

"What is this?"

It's a grief seed. Magical girls use them to recharge their magic.

"Wait, are you saying they HAVE to use grief seeds to recharge their magic? Or do you just mean a seed will speed up the process?"

Grief seeds are the only method of recharging magic that I am aware of.

"I see"

She started to head back home.

So now that you've seen a Witch will you make a contract?

"Is there any way we can skip the magical girl part and just have you grant the wish without any additional effects?"

I'm afraid that's impossible.

"Then no deal. Are you sure you don't have any alternative offers you could give me?"

Kyubey did not.

I'll see what I can do.

"Excellent. I'll see you around then."

And with that, they parted ways.

Oh this is good, and how many times in Homura's at least 100 Loops has Kagami been among the friends she watched die?

Prologue 2
March 17
Kazamino

Kyoko was utterly pissed. A couple of days ago she noticed a sharp decline in witches, which means someone had been poaching. That means someone was going to die, and she would be sure it wasn't her. Kyoko hopped onto a nearby roof, she and the rat were going to have a little talk.

Kyubey! Get your ass over here! I wanna ask you about something

The rat was annoying sometimes. But at the very least he always knew what magical girls were in the area, on account of being the one to grant their powers in the first place. It only took a moment for Kyubey to answer her summons.

What is it Kyoko?

"Tell me, have you made any new contracts around here lately?"

I have not.

"Well SOMEONE has been poaching on my territory, and I want to know who's doing it. So do you know or not!?"

I'm afraid I have nothing to say about that. There are no magical girls other than you hunting in this area.

"Then where the hell have all the Witches gone!? They can't have just disappeared into thin air!"

Sorry, but it's the truth.

Damnit. Kyoko became even more pissed, if the Witches were just disappearing then she'd need to find new hunting grounds, and that would be tricky as all the nearby hunting spots were already taken by other girls she would rather not mess with. Nothing for it then, she'd just have to find one of the Witches that were still around, they can't ALL be gone can they?

-----

Thankfully they weren't. She didn't find any Witches in many of the places there usually would be some, but once she expanded her search she eventually was able to find one. A stone dragon witch in a story book themed barrier, it was an easy kill for her. Getting a new grief seed always helped Kyoko manage her temper. She was even able to pick up the trail of another Witch on her way back to the hotel she was staying at.

Suddenly, the trail went dark, and that could only mean one thing. Her anger came back in full force, she KNEW it! Kyoko immediately transformed and went full speed ahead in the direction the witch was, and sure enough just inside a back ally there was a grief seed with a girl carrying a sword. Bingo.

She took a moment to size up her prey competition. Short black hair, about as tall as Mami and bright blue eyes. Casual clothing so she probably wasn't transformed, not unless her magical girl outfit was a plain hoodie. The sword, a rapier, looked pretty normal too. But there was no way she was just some girl, after all she was able to kill a Witch, and only a magical girl could do that. No magical girls in the area my ass, she was going to have quite the talk with Kyubey when she was done teaching this intruder a lessen in territory management.

The girl started to walk towards the grief seed, but Kyoko threw a spear between the girl and the seed to stop her.

"Just what do you think your doing!?"

Surprisingly she simply walked around the spear without slowing down and picked up the seed anyways, pocketing it immediately.

"Hunting witches obviously. Got a problem with that?"

She twirled her sword a bit, leaving it pointing straight at Kyoko threateningly. Not to be detered Kyoko summoned another spear and jumped down to face her.

"Heck yeah a do! This is my territory, so all of the grief seed here belong to me!"

She made a show of looking around for a second.

"Yeah, this is an ally way. Pretty sure it's public property."

Kyoko wasn't amused.

"Smart ass. Now hand over the grief seed or else!"

The other girl sighed, rolling her eyes and reached into her pocket.

"Fine, whatever, I don't really care about it anyways."

She threw Kyoko the grief seed. Really? That was it? She was just going to give up the seed and leave!? Fuck, that really pissed her off, now she couldn't even relieve her stress by beating her up. Oh well, at least she still got the seed. But still, when she saw Kyubey next she was going to tear him to pieces.

March 18
Kagami's apartment

Kyubey had checked in with Kagami once before already and had seen her apartment twice before now. So they were surprised when they came in to see everything being put into boxes.

What's up with the Boxes Kagami?

"Moving. Figured it would be good to head to Mitakihara."

Well that was convenient. Just the other day a girl with massive magical potential was sighted in Mitakihara. Having all of the potential magical girls in one place would make it much easier to monitor them all at once.

How come? Isn't it an odd time to be moving?

Kagami stopped and pulled out a map from one of the boxes. Laying it out it was a marked map of Kazamino and some of the surrounding city. The map had about 30 dots around Kazamino.

"Look here. I've marked all of the Witches I was able to find on this map. If you notice, most of the Witches were towards the boarder between Kazamino and Mitakihara. And it forms a rough curve too. So I'd imagine that somewhere in Mitakihara is a LOT of witches forming a circle, and I'm just finding the edge that's spilling over into the surrounding cities. As such if I move into Mitakihara I should be able to find more Witches."

Her reasoning was mostly sound, but it did bring up a few questions. Like how did she find those witches in the first place? Potential magical girls could see witches, but their barriers were still invisible without the help of a soul gem or magic sensing abilities like the incubators have. Not to mention, without a soul gem or incubator assistance to force the matter, a witch could easily just ignore her and not let her in. They'd have to deliberately pull her in and they'd only do that if she seemed vulnerable, which Kyubey doubted was the case given what they'd seen so far.

"Speaking of which Kyubey. Is there anything you can tell me about Mitakihara magically speaking?"

Kyubey would be sure to keep an even closer eye on Kagami to see just how it was she was able to hunt witches. It wouldn't do for people to start thinking magical girls were unnecessary.

There is only one magical girl there, named Mami Tomoe. Additionally there are a couple of girls with magical potential that I'm looking to form a contract with soon.

"Oh? And who are the potentials?"

Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki.

"Got it. I'll keep an eye on them. I'm sure you wouldn't like it if they suddenly died.

Indeed they would not. And with that Kagami went back to packing. Soon, she'd be headed to Mitakihara, once there Kyubey would have plenty of time to figure her out.

That was the last prologue chapter btw. I needed to set up what Kagami is able to accomplish before she can start throwing around butterflies and establishing HOW she can do what she does.

Chapter 1
March 21
Mitakihara City

"Today we have a new transfer student. I'd like you all to give her a warm welcome."

Mitakihara middle school rarely got transfer students. So almost everyone in the class was excited when their teacher said a student was unexpectedly joining the class. Mami however couldn't bring her heart into hit. She smiled politely of course as the new girl walked in, but she couldn't truly bring herself to care. Not when her duties as a magical girl would conflict with any lasting friendships she would have otherwise loved to have. It's a real shame, but the Witches needed to be stopped, so it was a price she had to pay to keep people safe.

"I'm Kagami Shado! It's a pleasure to meet you all!"

With how cheerful she acted Mami was sure Kagami would fit right in. She'd easily make a lot of friends, join up with one of the larger groups and never even realize Mami existed except in passing, let alone become her friend. It happened every year with the new students and there was no reason a transfer student would break the pattern now.

Mami sighed internally as she half listened to Kagami relating her experience with kendo clubs to her classmates.

-----

"Hi! Mind if I sit with you?"

Mami realized she may have misjudged Kagami, considering she made a beeline towards her the second she sat down for lunch. Still, even if Kagami wanted to talk to her right now, she'd inevitably get frustrated by her packed schedule among other things and leave.

"Of course!"

Mami pulled out her lunch bento, homemade of course, and Kagami pulled out her own. Kagami paused before starting to eat to present her hand for a handshake.

"I'm Kagami. What's your name?"

"Mami Tomoe, pleased to meet you."

And with that they both started to eat.

"So Mami. Does this school have any clubs related to martial arts or swordplay? I'm hoping to join one."

"Unfortunately no. We do however have an archery club."

"Oh, that's a shame."

They chatted about various school topics for the rest of the period. Although Mami had to be vague about what she did outside of school for obvious reasons. They traded numbers at Kagami's insistence as the lunch period was ending.

-----

Time passed like a blur until the school day was over. Mami found herself briefly walking with Kagami and heard that she had moved into the same apartment complex that she was staying in. However since Mami wasn't heading back to the apartment anyways they still split off relatively quickly.

Currently she was Witch hunting. She had already gotten her first kill of the day, having gotten lucky and found a relatively weak Witch early into her search, but she was hoping to find a second. However twice in her search she'd pick up trail of a Witch only for it to disappear into nothing as she was heading to it. The meaning behind this was obvious, someone else had killed the Witch and she wanted to know who. It wasn't like she was particularly mad about another magical girl hunting Witches nearby, she HAD already gotten a grief seed earlier so her magic wasn't low, however she knew from experience that other magical girls moving in often meant trouble and she didn't want to be caught off guard. As such when she locked onto her forth Witch of the day she transformed and started roof hopping towards where she thought the Witch was.

Sure enough, the Witch was defeated before she could enter the barrier, however this time she was able to see who did it. A girl with long black hair, a shield as her weapon and an off-brand school outfit as her magical girl costume. Mami quickly jumped down, still transformed, to greet the unknown magical girl.

"Just what is an unknown magical girl doing here?"

The girl quickly snapped to her, eyes briefly widening in what was clearly shock before being quickly replaced with a neutral expression. Clearly she wasn't expecting company.

"I live here. Is there something wrong with that?"

She LIVES here? Well that changes things quite a bit. She'd have known if she had been here for awhile, so the girl was either lying or a recent contract.

"When did you contract exactly?"

The girl was silent for a moment, considering what she should say.

"I contracted on the 16th. Before that I was in the hospital."

With that Mami relaxed, it all made sense now. She hadn't heard of her before now because she hadn't contracted until very recently, and she was likely just eager to try out her powers on some Witches now that she had them. Wait hold on, that doesn't quite add up.

"You killed 3 Witches in one day after having only contracted this week?"

"Of course I-"

The girl froze when she realized what Mami had actually said.

"Three? This is the only Witch I have killed today"

Mami frowned, that's quite worrying. If she's only killed one Witch then who killed the other 2? This warranted further investigation. Plus she might even be able to befriend the new magical girl in the meantime! It'd be nice to have a partner again, even if it's only temporary. Mami moved to shake her hand.

"Well in that case, I'm Mami Tomoe, would you like to come back to my apartment to discuss this further? I have tea if you'd like some!"

She seemed to freeze for a second before finally sighing and accepting the handshake.

"Fine. Homura Akemi."

Chapter 2
March 21
Mami's Apartment

Stupid! So stupid! Why did she have to say she was just contracted! Now it was going to be hard to warn off Madoka from contracting, it wouldn't fit with being new. Homura needed a new plan and fast. How did this even happen anyways? She hunted the Witches she did partially because they were Witches that Mami never find with a handful of exceptions. And there was another magical girl in Mitakihara? Could it be Kyoko? Probably not, but even if it was that's still an anomaly, she needed to know more. That was why she agreed to go with Mami after all, she might be able to figure something out and if so, Homura wanted to be there for it.

When they entered the apartment Kyubey was already there.

Welcome home Mami! How was your day at school.

"It was nice, thank you for asking!"

Mami walked over to the kitchen to get the tea started.

"So, Miss Akemi. You didn't happen to see any other magical girls around here have you?"

"I have not. And please call me Homura."

It felt wrong to be called by her last name by someone she knew so well. Mami smiled at her request.

"Very well, then you may call me Mami."

Mami had a thoughtful look as she was pouring the tea. It was as tasty as Homura remembered it being, almost enough to make her smile. Almost. Mami turned to ask Kyubey something.

"Kyubey, other than Homura have you contracted with anyone around here recently?"

Sorry but no.

"Then it would have to be an existing magical girl that moved here from somewhere else. Hold on, Kyubey is Kagami a magical girl?"

Kagami?

She isn't.

"Mami, who is Kagami?"

"Oh right you wouldn't know her. She's a new transfer student in my class. I thought that maybe she could be responsible, seeing as how this happened the day she transferred."

That can't be a coincidence. Mami's class has never had any transfer students in previous timelines, and then this new girl shows up and suddenly Mami's hunting route changes and she sees some Witches disappearing on her. But then why would Kyubey say she isn't a magical girl? Could it have something to do with her wish? But then where was she in previous timelines? No matter what the case Homura was going to keep a close eye on her.

"Can you give me a physical description?"

"Of course."

-----

March 22
Mitakihara

Homura staked out the school exit when school hours until she saw someone fitting Mami's description. Interestingly enough they were actually walking home with Mami, they were talking about something but Homura wasn't close enough to hear. Eventually Kagami walked into Mami's apartment complex along with Mami herself, however a few minutes later she came back out by herself, this time with casual clothes and a hoodie.

She started walking in a seemingly random direction, specifically the redlight district. What was she doing there? The only things there were factories and mob gangs, was she looking for a fight? As she kept going Homura picked up the trail of a nearby Witch. She ignored it, following Kagami was the priority at the moment. After a few more minutes of walking Kagami eventually walked into one of the abandoned factories. After waiting a few seconds Homura stopped time to see what she was doing in there. She entered the factory and...

...Kagami wasn't there. Homura took an extensive look around in timestop, she was just gone like she vanished into thin air when she entered the factory. There wasn't really anywhere for her to hide, she shouldn't have even known to hide in the first place since she never even looked around to potentially see her stalker. She looked around for a few more minutes in real time before giving up. The Witch disappeared soon after too, the Witch wasn't in the factory anyways however so it probably wasn't Kagami, maybe it was Mami? Actually...

Mami? Can you hear me? Would you happen to be hunting a Witch right now?

...

Nothing. Wasn't her then, Mami would have responded if she was in range, meaning it was the mysterious other magical girl. Nothing to do here but head home then, Homura detransformed and started walking back normally, no need for roof hopping now that she wasn't following anyone. Not too long after she started walking back she heard what was probably the start of a fight around the corner.

"The fuck are you looking at!?"

The voices came from an ally separating 2 factories. It was larger than most ally's in area, but was still small enough to be discrete. Homura transformed and jumped into the roof of one of the factories to see what was going on. Kagami was there, along with 5 adult men, clearly mobsters of some kind. One of them seemed much smaller than the rest, druggie maybe?

"If you're going to do a drug trade, you should probably pay more attention. I could hear you guys from a mile away."

One of the bigger men walked up and smirked.

"Oh yeah? And what are you going to do about it, little girl?"

Before anyone could even blink she had kicked him square in the chest. Before he could recover she was already following up, grabbing the poor guys head and throwing it into her knee hard enough to knock him out. It was then that the others snapped out of it and started to retaliate.

"How dare you! Get her!"

They all charged Kagami, 2 of them pulling out knives to do so. She swiftly ducked behind one of the knife users, grabbed his arm and pulled to the side hard. It bent unnaturally, dislocating the joint, making him drop the knife. Kagami immediately kicked the knife behind her with her foot and dropped her second victim to the ground. The other 2 remaining attackers quickly went down in similar fashion. She slowly approached the druggie who was frozen in fear the whole time. He started to backpedal and fell down in panic, continuing to crawl backwards in terror. Kagami simply walked up and said one word.

"Run."

And with that the man was on his feet sprinting away as fast as he could. Kagami simply looked pleased with herself and started walking back home.

-----

Hey Mami? Did you know about Kagami's martial arts?

Yes of course. She mentioned several times how she practices both martial arts and swordplay every day. It's honestly quite inspiring. Why do you ask? Did you see her training?

Turns out her sparing partners are mobsters.

Oh my. Is she ok?

She's not the one you should be worrying about.

...I see.

Chapter 3
March 22
Mitakihara

Madoka was in over her head. Her day started out normally enough. Went to class, talked with Sayaka and Hitomi like always. She and Sayaka both went to visit the hospital, when Madoka left Sayaka was still there, wanting to stay for a bit longer. Rather than going straight home Madoka decided to head into the shopping district to do some window shopping. Unfortunately nothing caught her eye so she moved on and started to go home. However before she got far she heard a commotion behind one of the shops.

"You fucker! Get back here!"

She heard a man yelling in the distance as she was walking over to check it out. By the time she actually reached the back of the store she only was able to see the foot of one of the men as they were running off. She was going to walk away and move on when she noticed a shimmer in the air. Letting her curiosity get the better of her she walked up to inspect the strange patch of air. However, when Madoka waved her hand through the shimmer to see if it would clear up, the world seemed to disappear around her, replaced with some strange nightmarish planes, but with giant grass that surrounded her on all sides, extending high above her preventing her from seeing far.

All around her giant discolored insects started appearing around her, slowly approaching her. Madoka wanted to run, but she was surrounded. One of the flying insects suddenly went to dash into her. Madoka felt her life flashing before her eyes as she braced for impact....

...only it never came. When she opened her eyes there was another girl there holding a sword. Looking around Madoka could see that the insects previously threatening her were now cut cleanly in half, including the one that dashed at her.

"You alright?"

Madoka was in too much shock to speak, so she just nodded her head instead.

"Ok good. Come with me, I'll keep you safe until we can leave."

The girl stuck out her hand which Madoka quickly took, and she lead her through the grass. Now that she was relatively safe, Madoka could feel herself starting to calm down.

"Just where are we? And what were those things? What's going on!?"

The other girl smiled back at her.

"This is a labyrinth, the lair of a monster known as a Witch. Those creatures back there are familiars, the Witches minions. What's your name?"

"Wha- oh um I'm Madoka Kaname"

"Nice to meet you Madoka. I'm Kagami"

They both continued onwards for a few more minutes before they reached a clearing with what looked like a large shallow sinkhole in the middle, forming a weird misshapen arena. After stepping up to the edge of the sinkhole Kagami let go of her hand.

"I'm going to need you to wait right here, for your own safety of course."

"What!? What are you going to do!"

"In order to leave a labyrinth you need to kill the Witch that made it. So I'm going to do exactly that."

"But-"

"No buts, I've done this before, I'll be fine."

Kagami jumped down into the hole, and a gigantic wormlike creature shot out of the ground in response, like something from right out of a fantasy novel. It tried do dash at Kagami but she sidestepped at the last second, slashing the worm with her sword as she did so. It quickly came back around for another pass, but her dodge wasn't a fluke and she got another clean strike in. The creature, instead of continuing to futilely dash straight at her instead burrowed into the ground. Kagami visibly got ready to jump and flew into the air. Not a moment later the worm shot up form the ground where Kagami was previously standing. She slashed the worm once again as it was coming back down, this time splitting it in half.

The worm's corpse glowed briefly before vanishing, once it did the strange planes they were in vanished as well, leaving them back in the real world. Which means that must have been the Witch she was fighting.

"You did it!"

Madoka was grinning ear to ear. Now that the danger was over she could appreciate how awesome that fight seemed to be, Madoka didn't even know it was possible to move that fast! Plus she was just happy they were both still alive and uninjured inspite of what happened.

"So can I assume you want a bit more of an explanation?"

She did, so she nodded.

"Got it. I'll walk you home, we'll talk on the way."

"Alright"

Madoka started walking home again, with Kagami following closely behind.

"So first of all, those Witches. The worm you saw me fighting was a Witch, but Witches come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. They can look like Golems, Dragons, inanimate objects or even just something weird and abstract. But they are all dangerous and they eat humans, so I've been going around and killing them when I locate them."

"If they are so dangerous then how come people don't know about them?"

"That's simple. Witches don't leave witnesses. They are careful to not be spotted taking someone into their labyrinths. Since the only way to leave a labyrinth is to kill the Witch, getting caught in a labyrinth unarmed is a death sentence. I can only fight them because I've been training to fight for almost my entire life."

Madoka grimaced, that's horrifying! They started to come up on Madoka's house while Kagami was giving her explanation.

"Hold on Madoka, before I go you need to know some things."

She pulled out her phone.

"First of all, here is my number."

Madoka copied it down in her phone.

"Good now listen, if you find yourself in a labyrinth again immediately call me and tell me where you were before you entered. I'll come over and get you out again. Additionally, do not tell ANYONE about what happened here. This isn't the sort of thing you can discuss in public. You got that?"

Madoka shook her head repeatedly. If she didn't want her to talk then she'd keep quiet.

"Excellent. In that case I'll see you around I guess."

Kagami walked off and Madoka went home to finally recover from her experience.

"I'm home!"

She's just casually killing Witches, I love it. I really can't wait to see what other butterflies she unleashes.

Chapter 4
Kyubey was starting to realize that killing Witches was simply the tip of the iceberg when it came to the weirdness surrounding Kagami.

First there was the matter of identity. Kyubey tried to preform a background check on the tournaments she had trophies for. From seeing the combat footage, it was clear she was proficient in several forms of martial arts and armed combat. However, what was strange was the lack of records of her prior to 2 years ago. The event organizers require identification for most of the events she went to, and she was able to get in while citing attendance at Kazamino middle school, but when Kyubey checked Kazamino's electronic student database, which the event organizers had access to and would be checking in with to verify the applicants, Kagami was notably missing. Other investigations into her identity turned up blank when they checked anything prior to 2009. No known relatives, no prior residency, nothing. Almost like she popped into existence out of nothing.

Next, there was the question of how she fought Witches. By watching her while she was "patrolling" it is clear she has some method of reliably detecting Witches. Whenever she'd go out she would immediately walk directly to the nearest Witch, implying that her detection method is even more precise that a magical girls. Attempts to figure out HOW she detects Witches haven't came up with anything, she'd simply know where to head without any indication that she'd done anything to find out. Additionally, attempts to find out how she enters the barrier have turn up blank as well. Once she gets close to the barrier, she'd keep walking around before breaking line of sight with them. Once out of sight she'd somehow disappear, they'd be unable to find her at all, until eventually the Witch dies and they'd be there to pick up the resulting grief seed.

Finally the fights themselves continue to be baffling. She obviously isn't a magical girl, yet her feats of speed and strength are well above what is conventionally possible for a human through training. There is also the matter of her sword. It is much stronger than it's size would suggest, having not come even close to breaking no matter how much stress Kagami put on it. This is most likely a property of the sword itself rather than something Kagami is doing to the sword mid-fight, since other swords when used in public tournaments acted perfectly normal. However, even stranger than it's strength is it's sharpness. Even when the Witch is made out of solid metal the Sword is still able to cleanly cut through it. From inspecting a steel Witch created projectile that she cut in half, the cross section she cut into seemed to be melting off the sides despite the speed of the strikes not being nearly fast enough to generate that much heat.

Her willingness to fight Witches combined with her unwillingness to form a contract is also a mystery, however solving the other mysteries will likely yield an explanation on that matter, so it's relatively low priority to investigate.

Homura needed to restock her weapons. Her current stock was mostly drained from the fight with Walpurgisnacht in the previous timeline. As such she was heading over to the nearby JSDF military base to steal their stock.

Excuse me Homura. Seeing as you are relatively new, would you like to accompany me on a Witch hunt?

Now that wasn't an offer Homura had gotten very often lately. She couldn't right now, since she was busy restocking, however afterwards it would make sense to at least TRY to stay on friendly terms with Mami. She still had no idea how she managed to befriend her so easily.

Not right this second, I'm unfortunately busy at the moment. I should be able to finish my business within a few hours. Would you still be hunting then?

The base came into sight.

Absolutely! How about you come to my apartment at 6. We can have dinner and then we'll go on a hunt together. It will be fun!

Homura stopped time without responding. The world around her lost color and everything froze. She knew her way around this particular base, however even while acting efficiently it still took awhile to get everything she wanted. There were just that many guns and bullets to take. It took her hours subjectively before she had grabbed everything in their armory. She knew it wouldn't be enough, it was never enough, but every bit helps. When she was finally did finish getting her stock of weapons she resumed time a good distance away from the base.

I'll be there Mami.

The rest of the time before 6 was spent keeping an eye on Madoka. With all the weirdness going on this timeline she had no idea if any of it effected the girl. Thankfully she hadn't contracted when she wasn't looking or something crazy like that. She seemed distracted but otherwise ok, nothing to be too worried about.

-----

When 6 finally came they had a dinner made by Mami (delicious of course) and then immediately went on their hunt. Homura elected not to reveal her guns and kept her timestop to a minimum. Once again they had a few of the Witches they were hunting disappear on them to the unknown 3rd magical girl, but they were still able to find some Witches to kill. Between the 2 of them they were easy kills.

Fun fact: there should now be enough information available to guess what Kagami's abilities are. First one to figure it out gets imaginary brownie points.

Uh I don't think Kyubey uses Drones of any kind, there are a few things that hint to how he actually knows what's going on, first all Incubators share a Hive Mind with they're bodies, next when a body is killed another appears to take it's place and then consumes the killed one, and finally when Mami was in a car crash with her family he ended up being present for her to make a wish, this means he was already observing her. From this what can be gathered is that he has bodies observing any magical girl he contracts and anyone who has potential to contract

I think by 'drone' he meant one of his basic bunnycat bodies.

My gut reaction is that she's the product of someone else's Wish. As for powers, the only things that I can think of are either; she has access to something akin to Nasuverse Reinforcement, or the sword itself is her power, and it buff her when equipped. Although that doesn't explain the lack of a paper trail or her ability to somehow know when she's being watched

Chapter 5
March 25
Mitakihara

Finding out that monsters were real wasn't something Madoka could just forget or ignore. She held together well enough, not so much that people didn't notice, but at least enough that they didn't push when she said she was fine. She even was having nightmares about Witches. One that was just her being attacked by those insects, except no one had came for her. She had to bite down a scream when she woke up from that dream. And just last night Madoka had a dream of some girl she didn't know fighting a clockwork Witch of some kind with a shield, and losing. The Madoka in her dream acted like she recognized the girl, clearly it symbolized her fear of someone she loved being attacked and killed. She couldn't remember how it ended unfortunately.

So when the class was talking about a transfer student joining them soon, Madoka didn't even process it. As such, hearing the teacher mention a new classmate caught her off guard.

"Don't be shy now. Come on in!"

Madoka's head snapped up when hearing that. But more surprising than the existence of a transfer student was the identity of the transfer student. Madoka couldn't help but quietly exclaim about it.

"No way!"

It was the girl in her latest dream. But there's no way that's possible right!? Right!? And she was glaring at her for some reason too, did she notice her recognition?

"I'm Homura Akemi. It's nice to meet you."

Then again, maybe it's not so unbelievable after all. Monsters are real, and they were supposed to be impossible. So why not prophetic visions? Maybe Kagami knows something? She did seem to be the expert on this sort of thing. Wait didn't that mean she was going to be killed by a giant Witch of some kind!? That would be horrible!

After several minutes of just answering questions, Homura eventually got up and approached Madoka. She stiffened on Homura's approach

"You are the Nurses aid correct? Would you please take me to the Nurses office Madoka?"

"Yes um, alright."

She managed to mumble out an affirmative to her request and got up to lead her to the Nurses. They both walked out of the class, for some reason Homura was taking the lead.

"So Miss Akemi, the Nurses office is..."

Homura cut her off by scowling and taking the correct turn before she finished identifying it. Now that Madoka through of it, how did she even know her name? Maybe they had already met and she forgot about it, that would explain quite a lot! No need to assume the supernatural immediately.

"So Akemi. I'm sorry if this sounds strange but have we met before?"

She kept walking silently for several steps. Maybe not then.

"Please Madoka, call me Homura."

Well if she was going to insist like that then Madoka had no issues referring to Homura by her first name.

"Well if you insist Homura. So if we haven't met before then how did you know my name?"

Another pause.

"Miss Saotome told me."

"Oh right. I guess that makes sense."

After walking silently a bit longer they got to a glass bridge connecting 2 sections of the building. Upon reaching the center of the bridge Homura stopped and suddenly spun around.

"Do you treasure your friends and family, and the life you currently live?"

What the heck.

-----

After school Madoka met up with Sayaka and Hitomi to hang out at a local cafe. On the way Madoka sent Kagami a quick text asking if she could talk with her in private. As such Sayaka and Hitomi were already there when she arrived. Sayaka was in the middle of gushing about Homura when she sat down and placed an order.

"...and then she just casually breaks the gym class records! First day and she's already showing up the whole class, I can't believe it."

This got a giggle out of Hitomi.

"Are you jealous that she beat you in gym? That is your strongest subject."

Sayaka rolled her eyes at that.

"ugg, don't remind me. Anyways, Madoka do you happen to know the transfer student? She was glaring at you when she came in. Any idea why?"

Madoka was tempted to tell her about the dream. But then she'd have to tell them about how she'd been having nightmares because of real life monsters, and that just wasn't a conversation she wanted to have. So instead she just wordlessly shook her head.

"No idea huh. Any guesses?"

They all took a moment to consider the possibilities. Madoka couldn't come up with any satisfying answers, but Hitomi eventually came up with a theory.

"Maybe you remind her of someone else she knows. You aren't the only girl with pink hair. She might have thought she recognized you initially and that brought her attention to you."

That... actually makes a lot of sense. Hitomi was always good at this sort of thing, being the smart one in the group. Madoka's phone vibrated, prompting her to check it.

<Kagami: Got it. Meet me at my apartment ASAP.>

Her text also linked her apartment address.

"Oh! Maybe you have a long lost identical twin, and Homura mixed you up!"

That got a laugh out of all 3 of you.

"That's unlikely, but it does get the idea across. Anyways I unfortunately have to go."

"What is it this time? Piano lessons or something?"

"Tea ceremony lessons. I know it's annoying but these classes are important you know?"

"Yeah yeah, whatever. Hey Madoka, wana hit up the music shop with me?"

Normally Madoka would love to hang out with Sayaka there. However today she had more important things to do.

"Sorry Sayaka, but I have plans too. Good luck finding something for Kyosuke!"

Having established their plans, the 3 of them went their separate ways.

-----

Kagami's apartment complex wasn't that far from the cafe, so it wasn't long until Madoka was knocking on her door. A few seconds later the door was unlocked and opened revealing Kagami herself.

"Come in."

She walked around the apartment briefly taking a note of everything that was there. A large map of the city hung on the wall, marked with almost a hundred dots of various colors. There was a shelf full of trophies for various combat tournaments, and finally there was her sword and it's sheath hanging on a wall. Other than that however, the apartment was almost barren. It had the necessities of course, a table, silverware ect, but it lacked pretty much anything else. No posters, no tv, she probably had a laptop but there was no desktop.

"So where are your parents?"

Madoka realized almost immediately that asking that question was probably not the best idea, but unfortunately it was too late to take it back.

"I never knew my parents unfortunately. I live alone."

That was so sad.

"But enough about me. What did you want to talk about?"

No time like the present Madoka supposed.

"I think I'm having prophetic visions."

Kagami raised her eyebrow at that.

"In school today we had a new transfer student. But the thing is that the night before I had seen her in a dream. She was fighting one of those Witches with a shield."

Kagami went quiet for a moment.

"Madoka. Give me a physical description of the girl and also what she had on her in the dream."

Madoka told her everything she could. Purple eyes, long black hair, somewhat taller than the other students her age. In the dream she had a small buckler and some kind of black and white skirt, she couldn't make out the details of the outfit however.

"In that case Madoka. I can confirm that you have DEFINETLY received a vision of some kind. We can't be sure it's prophetic yet, but there is no way you could have seen that without some kind of clairvoyance."

While it was relieving to hear she wasn't crazy. It was simultaneously worrying to think she was receiving visions at all, especially considering the Witch in the dream.

"What is Homura exactly?"

Given her dream and Kagami's reaction, there is no way she's a normal girl. Not to mention her cryptic warning.

"Homura is the transfer correct?"

Madoka nodded, realizing she never actually said her name out loud.

"Basically, she's a mage. The outfit you saw her in is made out of magic and along with her weapon, a shield in this case, allows her to preform magical feats of some kind. I don't know what she can do with her magic, it varies from person to person. Additionally, the mages are the ones officially responsible for exterminating the Witches. I do kill Witches whenever I can, but while for me it's more of a hobby, it's a full time job for mages. They are bound by a magical contract to keep fighting them you see."

That answer satisfied Madoka for now on that subject. But there were still other pressing questions regarding Homura she had.

"Alright, that's actually pretty cool, if she hunts Witches then I guess she's one of the good guys. But anyways, she also seemed to know me. When she first walked into the class she glared right at me, and later on she had me walk her to the nurses office only to stop halfway and give me some cryptic warning about not changing. Any idea why she'd do that?"

Kagami frowned on hearing that.

"It's really hard to say without knowing her powers. She could know something about you through clairvoyance, maybe she knows we are connected because of that. Or maybe she's the one that induced your vision. Or maybe she sensed something in you. It could really be anything, we'd just be speculating at this point."

Well that was unfortunate. Madoka was really hoping Kagami would have some special insight on that. But unfortunately it seemed Kagami was about as clueless as she was.

"Was that all?"

"Yeah, at least for now anyways. I should really get going before my parents start to worry."

Madoka went home for the day, feeling a bit better about the whole magic situation thanks to what she learned, and was completely oblivious to Sayaka's presence in the apartment just a few doors over.

Huh. Does that mean Madoka missed out on Sakuya getting a solo run-in with Gertrude, and is now getting the recruitment pitch from Mami? Butterfly wings are really starting their flapping, if thats the case.

This also may mean Mami will survive if she doesn't have to split her attention and focus on protecting Madoka during the fight with Charlotte,,, and Sayaka may already be doomed, because from what can be gathered most timelines where she becomes a Magical Girl Sayaka dies

Does that mean Madoka missed out on Sakuya getting a solo run-in with Gertrude, and is now getting the recruitment pitch from Mami?

Chapter 6
March 25
Mitakihara

Originally, Homura's plan had to kill Kyubey on this day. He always uses Sakaya and Madoka's outing to the mall as an opportunity to lure them into a Witch, so eliminating Kyubey might be able to prevent that. Unfortunately, meeting Mami early threw a wrench in that plan, immediately after school Mami noticed her and moved to walk around with her, necessitating a plan b. Normally she'd be fine without allying with Mami, her plan moreso relying on Kyoko, but with all of the anomalies going around this timeline she had a feeling she was going to need it.

If killing Kyubey wasn't possible without antagonizing Mami too soon, then the alternative would be to simply patrol around the mall to kill the Witches there before Sayaka could be trapped by one. As such she convinced Mami to come with her on a Witch hunt and to start by patrolling the mall. It took a little bit but they were able to pick up on the trail of a Witch after searching for awhile. Homura managed to find where Sayaka was listening to music, but she didn't see Madoka there at all. She could only hope she wasn't already in a labyrinth.

The Witch was one she'd fought many times before, a plant based Witch with a factory themed labyrinth. Once again Homura avoided using guns for now, it was a weak Witch anyways and there was no reason to show her hand this early. As such she just played support with magic blasts while Mami took out the Witch itself with a Tiro Finale.

All that was left to do now was confirm Madoka's safety, THAT had Homura worried, given that she wasn't with Sayaka earlier.

First she went back to where Sayaka was... she wasn't there. Thinking she might have just gone home she started to trace the path between the mall and Sayaka's home, seeing if she could find Sayaka in transit. Mami followed closely behind her, she seemed a bit confused on her route but didn't say anything. When they picked up the trail of a Witch on the way Homura could feel her heart drop. There was another Witch that they missed, and Sayaka was most likely lured into it's labyrinth by now.

She immediately rushed over to where she sensed it, Mami sensing it too nodded at her and sped up as well. Homura smoothly entered the labyrinth without stopping. Thankfully they were able to reach Sayaka in time. Madoka still nowhere to be found, which Homura supposed was probably a good thing now considering the Witch. Sayaka was understandably freaking out at the strange scenery.

Having confirmed Sayaka's location Homura took the time to examine the labyrinth itself. It actually was a Witch she'd fought before, a bird themed Witch. The familiars were easy as always, so she and Mami easily blasted all of the familiars in the immediate area.

"Transfer student! W-what are you doing here! And what the hell is going on!?"

Mami, being the diplomatic type immediately spoke up to reassure her.

"Don't worry, we're here to help. Just stay close to us and we'll explain everything once it's over ok?"

Sayaka blankly nodded, having seen the lightshow from their opening attack. Before they continued there was something Homura desperately needed to know.

"Where is Madoka."

"Uh, she said she had plans and ran off. I have no idea!"

At the very least that means she's not in the labyrinth, so that's good. But it's also another anomaly, she shouldn't have any plans to day normally, so that's NOT good. Regardless she still had a Witch to kill.

Having been through this particular labyrinth before Homura was able to lead their party directly to the core where the Witch was. A paper bird locked in a cage, with giant familiars swarming it on all sides. They started to rush in the second they saw them. This was one of the more durable Witches, so her energy blasts weren't going to cut it. Instead she stopped time and got closer by using the familiars as stepping stones. Pulling out an automatic heavy machinegun she fired off several full clips into the cage. The bird itself had to be hit for it to do any damage, so she was careful to aim between the bars. This was also why her energy attacks wouldn't work, they weren't precise enough to avoid the bars.

After unloading a good amount of ammunition at the Witch she pulled out a grenade to top things off, throwing it directly into the cage. Finally, she jumped to the ground and resumed time.

The Witch wasn't quite killed instantly but it was heavily weakened. Mami swiftly dealt with the approaching familiars in only a few seconds. She seemed proud when she saw the damage Homura had done to the Witch in that time, before firing a precise Tiro Finale to finish off the wounded Witch. Sayaka meanwhile could only stand there in awe at what just happened as the world faded back to normal. Right on cue the incubator showed up and jumped on Mami's shoulder.

"Just what are you people!? And what is that thing!?"

Well Sayaka, they are magical girls!

"Wow he's talking in my head! That's not me going crazy right?"

That got Mami to giggle briefly.

"Don't worry you aren't crazy, Kyubey is telepathic."

"That's good I guess. So how did you know my name anyways? Did Akemi tell you?"

I've actually had my eye on you for a few days now. I sense potential in you

Homura already knew this of course, but Sayaka and to a much lesser extent Mami were surprised to hear that.

"Potential? What sort of potential?"

Simple. You have the potential to become a Magical girl! All you have to do is form a contract with me.

"How about you come back with us to my apartment."

It was just like Mami for her to simply assert that Homura would be coming too. However she did want to be present for this discussion, so she didn't correct her and simply followed them to the apartment.

-----

"Wow cool apartment!"

Sayaka was always impressed with Mami's apartment. Heck Homura was impressed when she first saw her apartment too. It had so much charm too it. Not that she particularly cared about that nowadays, but it mattered at the time.

"I live alone so make yourself at home."

Sayaka sat down while Mami brought everyone some cake.

"This cake is delicious! Thanks Mami <3"

Mami smiled at the praise. Homura silently ate her own slice as well, it was amazing.

"So, magical girls?"

Mami pulled out her soul gem and transformed it into it's egg form.

"This is a soul gem, it's the source of our magic and it serves as proof that we are magical girls. When you make a contract with Kyubey, a soul gem is created."

"What kind of contract?"

I will grant you one wish. Any wish you desire! I can make the most impossible of miracles come true!

"Wow that's amazing! I could wish for so much!"

Homura felt this was a good time to step in, or else she might take the deal right now.

"Don't think he's doing it for free. A magical girl is required to fight those monsters you saw earlier. Mami is much more skilled than a typical magical girl. There is a good chance you will die. Think about how those around you would feel if you were to disappear, think about how Madoka would feel. That's the price. Mami and I can afford it because we don't have families or friends to miss us, but that's not the case for you."

Mami solemnly nodded.

"She's right you know. It's true that Kyubey will grant whatever wish you have, but death is part of that deal. So you should think about it, long and hard."

Sayaka couldn't help but frown after hearing that. The threat of death was always a good deterrent. One Homura was all too eager to emphasize and use against Kyubey.

"Aggg... now I'm all stressed. Why cant this sort of thing just be easy!?"

Mami softly smiled when hearing that.

"If only life were that simple. Since you're unsure how about you accompany us on a few Witch hunts? To get a feel for the magical girl life."

As unintuitive as it may seem, historically(?) this trial period actually delayed Madoka and Sayaka from contracting. It made the danger feel more real and thus harder to ignore when making the decision, and it made them feel more included without having to contract. Therefore, Homura had no issue with the proposed arrangement, even if she did disagree with encouraging her to take the contract at all.

"You've mentioned these Witches a few times. What exactly are they?"

If magical girls could be said to born from wishes, then Witches are born from curses.

"Murder without motive, suicides that don't make sense. Witches are the cause of many mysterious deaths."

They hide in the labyrinths they create. That place you were in earlier? That's a labyrinth. And since they are invisible to humans they are impossible to trace.

Sayaka seemed to understand, the idea of such a monster had her slightly freaked out. Good, magic should be seen as scary, so stay away from it.

-----

Having nothing more to talk about Sayaka went home. Homura left the apartment as well, but instead of going directly home she went to Madoka's house to check on her. Luckily she was home, safe and sound, when she got there. Unfortunately she saw Kyubey there as well outside the house. Thankfully she made it in time. So to solve the problem she smashed Kyubey in stop time. The incubator never saw a thing or had a chance to identify it's attacker.

Sayaka getting involved was unfortunate. But at the very least Madoka was still completely oblivious to the world of magic and Witches.

Fun fact. This was the first chapter so far to not mention Kagami even once.

Although her presence is still felt via butterfly effect.

Also, the Witch they fought in this chapter is actually in the anime. It's the Witch Homura killed in the montage of episode 10. In the anime she opened her assault the same way she did here, but instead of leaving it for Mami she finished off the Witch herself with a second round of explosives.
