Before I read and reply to this I just want to say that when the notification came in my e-mail and I read the first few words a huge grin totally blossomed on my face and I immediately jumped onto my laptop.Geek mode, engaged.
So, what we know so far...
- Short-term goal: fully exploit the next month in support of medium-term goal. Identify intended pokemon partner.
- Medium-term goal: successfully capture pokemon partner (higher-quality preferred) and survive two weeks in likely unfriendly territory.
- Longish-term goal: With aid of pokemon partner, function as part of elite military force, primarily against wild pokemon.
- Humans have access to magic, and it's a pertinent stat.
Worthwhile notes (semi-conjecture):
- HUNTER is an actual military force. As such, reasonable costs for things like pokemon rations are unlikely to be an issue. We might not want to go for something like a Sableye, but the difference between "happy eating dried meat" and "survives entirely on sunlight and water" is not likely to be a huge deal.
- Pokemon value is based primarily on ability to fight wild pokemon. Based on the level of background put into previous games, it is reasonable to assume that HUNTER is arranged in a fairly sane way - which means that it should be possible to be assigned to places where we by and large have a type advantage, and need not worry about type disadvantages. There may be a place for support pokemon, for teams of HUNTERS, but ability to fight should be the primary concern.
- This game is likely realistic enough that terrain effects are a thing - fishlike pokemon not doign too well out of the water and so forth.
Summary of available characters (boiled-down for likely competencies)
Red:+mysterious (M)
Pow:1
Def:3
Mag:7
Res:6
Dex:3
Only character with magic above baseline - and he'll need it, given how terrible his power is. Magic resistance also quite high, but somewhat weak to physical attack. Worth noting that it'll probably be pretty easy to team up with Green (who's his adopted sister) if they can come up with pokemon who are both in the same area. His special abilities are likely to be based around magic, strangeness, and possibly getting unique pokemon.

Green:+training (F)
Pow:5
Def:4
Mag:2
Res:4
Dex:5
She's green, obsessed with training, high-speed, high-power, low-magic. Basically, she's a female Rock Lee (if likely more socially ept). Again, probably pretty easy to team up with Red. Likely to be particularly good at training - both for herself and her pokemon.
Do you want to be a female Rock Lee? Y/N
Blue:+knowledge (M)
Pow:4
Def:4
Mag:4
Res:4
Dex:4
Our all-rounder. Perfectly even across the board - and by extension tied for second-best mage in the group. No real weaknesses, but likely to spend the game obsessing about the oppressive shadow cast by his grandfather.
Do you want to spend the game obsessing about the shadow cast by your oppressive grandfather? Y/N
Yellow: +amulet (M)
Pow:4
Def:3
Mag:3
Res:5
Dex:5
A bit of a mix, statwise. The most interesting parts are probably the amulet and the focus on myths and legends.
Do you want to spend a bunch fo time chasing myths and legends? Y/N
Pink: +weaponsmith (F)
Pow:6
Def:5
Mag:3
Res:4
Dex:3
A combination of the Bruiser (high power, high defense, medium resist, but slowish) and the crafting pick. Kind fo cool that this one's female. May or may nto be aqua's sister. Has one more stat point overall than average (21 instead of 20)
Do you want to play around with the crafting rules? Y/N
Purple: +resourceful/diplomatic (M)
Pow:3
Def:3
Mag:4
Res:3
Dex:6
Hi-ho Silver, away. The only character other than ash who has more magic than power, and tied for worst Def/Res. Tied for best Dex, too, though. Highly likely to be the most scheming of the group. He may have mellowed (that's good!) but "resourceful" + "diplomatic" + "Silver expy" = "always has an angle". Has one *less* stat point than average (19 insead of 20)
Do you like scheming? Do you want to work the diplomacy game? Y/N
Aqua: +Chancellor help (F)
Pow:5
Def:3
Mag:2
Res:3
Dex:6
A statline very similar to purple, except low-magic, high-power. As such, she's even more of a lightning bruiser than Green (though her defenses are a lot worse). Also has 19 overall stat points rather than 20. Personal attention from the Chancellor could be handy.
Do you want a personal relationship with the Chancellor that *is't* based on resentment and insecurity? Y/N

That's exactly what it's there for.
I'm not gonna confirm or deny anything regarding the damage formulae. You have some things right and some things wrong.Huh. My guess is, then, that ranged weapons are generally magic-based, while melee are generally pow-based (as the two that use ranged are also the two that have better MAG than POW). Given that Blue does not use ranged, there's probably a pertinent advantage or two to using melee as well (since range is its own advantage).
...and looking at the votes, "Yes! Yes I want to be a wizard!" has gotten a strong early lead.
This amuses me because.
