Disciple
[X] Accept Sensei's offer and become his first disciple.
The discipleship ceremony was usually a long, elaborate affair but with no masters remaining and no other disciples, Sensei chose to truncate the ceremony. At least portions of it.
There were some rituals she had to follow. The two primary ones were cleansing herself in spring water and fasting for a day in meditation. Difficult but she could endure it well enough. She had to dress in a silk kimono as well, which she had no idea how Sensei managed to get but perhaps he'd been secretly preparing for this for a while.
The ceremony itself was simple. They offered incense at an altar for the ancestors of the Tachibana clan then prayed at an altar for the deceased members of the clan. Then she made an oath to the heavens and to the spirits of those who came before her. She swore to be honorable in conduct, righteous in action, unwavering in loyalty, and unbreakable in spirit.
Sensei then formally accepted her as his first disciple.

"Warriors from the Isles all share a singular trait in their nature as empowered and that is the usage of ki," Kassandra sat cross legged in front of Sensei as he began their first formal lesson. "Ki can be understood as breath but also as essence. It encompasses the energy central to the existence of all living beings. By harnessing it, we are able to perform miraculous feats."
He stretched out his right hand and the air above it began to circulate until it formed a miniature sphere of swirling wind.
"Materialization and elemental infusion are advanced ki skills. On the most basic level it serves best as physical enhancement. Most empowered martial arts utilize ki to some capacity," he clenched his fist and dissipated the wind sphere. "The most basic technique is ki circulation. Learning to funnel ki through your body is the preparatory step for utilization."
He spent the next hour going over meditative techniques to detect her ki center before explaining the basics of channeling. She struggled immensely however to grasp the location of her ki center. It took her awhile to realize that while it typically formed in the lower abdomen for humans, her Kishin lineage meant the focus of her energy was in her heart. When she explained that the location of her core was very different to Sensei, he grew very pensive.
"We will try something different then. I have a feeling this technique may help you. Sit down again in lotus position and place your palms face up on your knees," she did as he instructed and closed her eyes. "Now calm you thoughts, focus on your heartbeat."
She felt Sensei place his hands on top of hers, but continued to focus on her steady heartbeat. She desperately tried to focus inward so she could tap into her internal energy or at least connect with her own core. She focused so intently she was completely caught off guard when his bloodlust manifested and his ki began to flow into her body and attack her.
Her hands burned with pain and it felt like her skin was being flayed off. She tried to resist it, but she had no way to control her body's energy, no way to ward against such an insidious intrusion. She felt despair, reluctance, anger, confusion all at once; a messy cacophony of thoughts and noise that built an intense irritation that built more and more until it exploded inside of her chest and she roared with the fury of a burning sun.
Her heart pumped an incredible amount of energy into the sonic blast emanating from her mouth. It crushed the ground beneath her before exploding out in a sphere of force. Sensei's touch was broken and he was sent flying back before he anchored himself and folded ki around his body as a shield. The force of her roar battered Sensei's ki shield heavily before shattering the wall behind him and breaking off a chunk of the roof in the process.
"Well, it seems we've awakened your ki core at the very least," she heard Sensei say as she fell to her knees gasping for breath. A bone deep exhaustion crept through her and she fell to the side. As she allowed her consciousness to fade, she smiled as she felt a warm thrum through her body and the steady flow of energy from her beating heart.
Kassandra's Star Core has become active though only in its embryo stage. It now generates essence to be added to the essence pool. Presently at 1 per year.

Sensei's tutelage continued apace as he taught her the ki circulation technique of the Tachibana family. She took to it like a fish to water once her heart began to bump energy. Her body acted as a natural conductor so it didn't take long before she was using ki to enhance her speed and strength. Durability enhancement took an interesting turn as her muscles and bones took an immense amount of energy to hit saturation. Given enough time and energy though she could reinforce herself to an absurd degree. She worked to hone this but efficiency proved difficult so she eventually gave up on this project for the moment.
Once she had circulation and enhancement down pat, she worked on creating the ki mantle that was the core of Tachibana martial arts. The first few times were rough as she ended up creating oddly sharp mantles that basically shredded her skin. If it wasn't for her innate durability she would have had to go to school looking like a victim in a horror movie. She eventually managed to create a mantle that settled around her body comfortably, though it didn't look anything like a tiger. Sensei said that part wasn't particularly important and would come in time.
"The Tachibana martial art has 9 techniques. Watch carefully as I will demonstrate them," Sensei relocated them to the mountain retreat for this particularly demonstration as the dojo couldn't really contain their destructive fights lately. It was starting to get tiresome how often they had to repair it. Ki exploded out from Sensei before it coalesced into the shape of a tiger and settled onto his body.
"White Tiger's Dash," Sensei's form blurred as he moved rapidly all around the terrace. "Our primary movement technique it can be used to dodge, advance, retreat or even circle around opponents."
"White Tiger's Leap," now that she was more sensitive to energy usage she could feel the ki he shunted through the soles of his feet to create an explosive propulsion that shot him forward. "This is one of our primary distance closers. It can be done to target people in the air as well."
"White Tiger's Shadow," Sensei suddenly turned into six people in front of her, but she was able to discern a bit more of this technique than the first time she saw it. It was definitely focused around playing with her senses. "Illusionary techniques like this are useful in engagements especially when outnumbered to buy you time and options. These three techniques comprise the movement techniques of Tachibana Martial Arts"
"White Tiger's Hide," the mantle thickened and swirled around Sensei's body like it was made of wind. "Definitely not the most powerful of defensive techniques, but if you can incorporate an element into it the effectiveness increases a lot. With wind it makes projectiles almost meaningless and can deflect a lot of attacks."
"White Tiger's Reversal," the mantle shifted again, this time coalescing around Sensei's right arm as he stomped down his right leg, Shifting slightly he thrust out with his shoulder, forming a shield of ki that blasted outwards. "If an attack connected with the shield I just made it would be absorbed and returned two fold. But this is a delicate and precise technique which requires you to understand your opponent's attack. Versus straight ki attacks it is easy and straightforward, but there are many types of empowered in the world. Be careful with this."
"White Tiger's Gale Claw," swirling blades of ki akin to miniature tornadoes extended 3 centimeters from the tip of each of his fingers until his hand resembled a claw. He swung his arm in an uppercut and released the blades which carved five deep furrows in the ground that went on for nearly thirty meters. "You can maintain this technique to add to the deadliness of your melee attacks or you can release it as a projectile attack. It's range is not too poor as you can see."
"The next three techniques are considered the secret techniques within our school and are not to be passed down lightly. They take a lot out of me so I will demonstrate them in rapid sequence. The first is Storm Regalia, the second is Sky Rending Claw, the third is Heaven's Roar."
Sensei's eyes glowed bright blue as he built up power. The air grew heavy and saturated and she could smell an oncoming storm. Dark clouds began to form in the sky above them, swirling and seething with fury. The wind picked up pace and began to coalesce as the mantle stretched and grew until it stretched a meter beyond his skin. Within moments he was encased in whirlwinds with sparks of lightning flashing around him.
He drew his arm back and she watched as concentric layers of highly compressed wind and lightning began to circle around it. Each layer alternated the direction of its flow and when he finally built five of them, he released it in a claw attack that blasted forward like a chaotic drill. It swiftly broke its way through a mountain and out the other side, leaving a gaping hole the size of a house.
Sensei took a moment to catch his breath before he chambered his fists at his sides and closed his eyes. She didn't notice what was happening until a ball began to form in front of his chest. It was densely packed with lightning and encased by turbulent winds, growing increasingly larger and heavier with time. It grew and grew until it was the size of a soccer ball. Then Sensei opened his eyes and released it into the air. She nearly went blind and deaf at once. She didn't catch anything beyond the aftermath which was a huge hole in the sky.
She watched as Sensei sat down, his clothes singed and smoking. It was the first time she had ever seen him so exhausted.
"Those are the nine techniques of the Tachibana Clan. There were always stories and legends about there being more, but they have been lost to us through the ages. Perhaps in time someone may be able to piece some of them back together by looking through the repository of books. We now come to the last thing I must tell you," Kassandra sat up attentively. "Within the basement of my home is an altar and upon it lies a white metal ring with a purple gem set into it. It is a rare artifact, a spatial treasure. If anything were to happen to me, safeguard this ring. Nothing in my home is its equal in worth, but if you have the opportunity you can throw in the other knick knacks I have lying around. I'm sure you have an idea which ones are important and which ones are not."
"I will do so, Sensei," she said with a bow.

Kassandra became the head of the cooking club the year after she joined. Though there were plenty of chefs that were better than her, none of them could match her passion and force of personality, so the seat was conceded to her when the former head graduated. Viktoriya stay in the club as well despite her poor cooking skills, though she did improve throughout the year. She ended up becoming the treasurer for the club.
Her first order of business was appointing the specialists in given fields to conduct lessons twice a week. Frederic Herme was by far their best patissier with solid skills in breadmaking as well so more or less anything to do with baking and desserts fell under his purview. Angelina Marcattilii came from a family of prominent chefs that moved out of Imperium a decade ago and ended up in Westmore. She was an outstanding pasta maker and knew Roman cuisine like the back of her hand. Chen Xueying was a talented chef specializing in cuisines from the East Asian Federation. Her best dishes were from the regions dominated by the Han ethnic groups but she had fairly broad knowledge that even included some Yamatai dishes. Between the four of them, they were able to maintain a high level of learning for all participants in the club without anyone burning out. Each of them only had to prepare a lesson every other week, so it was pretty easy.
Additionally they hosted lots of events as well, cooking for other clubs, doing fundraisers, cooking tournaments, and more. They eventually gained enough prominence the school allocated a dramatic budget increase and their combined skills were enough they were able to lure in adults to pay them as caterers. Viktoriya turned out to be very good at managing this.
"Roan Stevens asked the club to help him do a fundraiser at the Westmore Country Club about two months from now," Viktoriya said as she checked the club email for requests. Kassandra and Chen Xueying frowned, by Angelina and Frederic looked interested.
"I'm not a fan of getting involved with a politician," Kassandra shook her head.
"Oh come on Kassandra! We're not even close to voting age so no one would take it as a political endorsement. We're just a bunch of kids cooking for a well heeled crowd. It'll be good for us to build up these connections now if any of us want to get restaurants off the ground in the future," Angelina hopped up excitedly. "Imagine lining up investors before you even graduated middle school. I'm sure journalists will be there and might talk about our food too."
"I'm in agreement with Angelina. I think this is a good opportunity for us. Considering the size of the party we would take a lot of club members as support too. It would be a good experience for them," Frederic was getting really good at playing to her feelings of responsibility to the other students. She was about to answer when her phone rung.
"Dad?" she answered quietly, rising from her seat to move to the corner of the room.
"Empyrean was just assassinated in the heart of Imperium," she felt her heart drop and covered her mouth in shock. Her dad had never sounded so worried in his life. "I don't know what's going to happen next. But my gut instinct says the other shoe is about to drop."
"Kassandra!" she turned to see who shouted and found Viktoriya pointing out the window as Angelina, Frederic, and Xueying stared on in mute horror. Rushing over, Kassandra looked out the window to see a huge circular rift perhaps thirty kilometers away. It looked like a ring of void and she would have chalked it up to a stellar phenomenon if not for the hundreds if not thousands of tiny figures pouring forth from it.
"Dad, I think the other shoe just dropped. There's a huge rift disgorging thousands of armed and armored beings. There's some larger things coming out too that look like monsters," she strained her vision to see if she could make out more details, but that was about as much as she got.
"Come home, we need to leave," her father said after a short pause.
"Dad! What about everyone in town?"
"Do you think we can stop an invasion? We need to go. Come home now."
Kassandra bit her lip, her heart filled with hesitation.
[ ] Do as Dad says, we need to go!
[ ] I can't just leave my friends behind. Stay with them and help them evacuate.
[ ] Sensei asked me to take care of the ring. He would be a great ally here.
