[] 2057 / Charon Relay (+25 DP) At that time Humanity would have only barely been considered a space faring species by the standards of the Council Council. Though they maintained several orbital space stations, as well as ambitious plans to establish their first permanent lunar colony by the end of the next decade, they were still primarily confined to their homeworld of Earth. They possessed no knowledge of the wider galaxy, nor were they aware of the existence of Element Zero, lacking even the theoretical framework necessary to infer its existence and properties. As such they were utterly unprepared when one of their unmanned probes, launched years prior to survey what they believed to be an icy moon on the outermost edge of their solar system, inadvertently activated a long dormant Mass Relay….
[] 2147 / Charon Relay (+10 DP) At that time Humanity was still slowly finding its footing as an interplanetary species. Though still confined to their home star system of Sol, they had nevertheless managed to establish several permanent colonies on both their homeworld's large moon of Luna, and the neighboring but barren world of Mars. However a lack of Element Zero within the Sol system would likely have stunted their ability to expand any further, were it not for an otherwise routine scientific survey of the distant moon of Charon on the outermost edge of their solar system. Resulting in the discovery and accidental activation of a long dormant Mass Relay…
[] 2157 / Shanxi-Theta Relay (Canon) (+0 DP) By that time it had been almost a decade since Humanities discovery of the Prothean ruins left behind on the otherwise barren world of Mars, along with a relatively small stockpile of Element Zero and the formerly dormant Charon Mass Relay. These discoveries helped jumpstart Humanities expansion into the wider galaxy, allowing them to rapidly explore and even colonize several worlds within their small corner of the Mass Relay network. Driven by their immense curiosity and desire to further expand their territory Humanity would eagerly, though some would say recklessly, activate every Mass Relay they encountered. Eventually this practice led to the activation of the Shanxi-Theta Relay,as well as its formerly dormant partner, known to the Council Races as Relay 314…
[] 2257 / Shanxi-Theta Relay (-10 DP) By that time more than a century had passed since Humanities discovery of the Prothean ruins left behind on the otherwise barren world of Mars and the formerly dormant Charon Mass Relay. In that century they had managed to steadily expand outwards from the Sol System, utilizing their newfound access to the Mass Relay network to establish numerous extrasolar colonies. It is conceivable given Humanity's moderate rate of expansion up to that point, as well as the various internal issues plaguing Humanity at the time, that it could very well have taken several more centuries before first contact was made with the wider galactic community. If people wish to create omakes for this quest then I'm more than happy to encourage them.
Omakes in the form of their own Codex entries would be in keeping with the theme and presentation style of the main quest, but I'm not going to penalize more traditional short stories or character pieces.
Obvious the canonicity of any omakes is subject to my discretion, but even if I deem an omake "non-canonical" or only "semi-canonical" if the quality is decent then I'm happy to reward the time and effort that went into making them.
As for rewards; they will depend on the quality and content of the omake, with the most likely reward being extra DP to either spend or pay off any outstanding debt. If I like the omake enough and I feel the content is inline with the story I'm looking to tell, then I may even incorporate its contents into the "cannon" of the quest. Which potentially could create new opportunities and options for you all to vote on.
It's always nice to see people take an interest in your creative works, so to any prospective omake writers out their thank you and good luck.
I look forward to seeing what you can up with.

[] Damarta Cluster ("Canon") (+0 DP) ...a remote star cluster on the edge of Inner Council space. The Damarta Cluster is located in a region of the Relay network that branches off from one the main trade routes connecting Batarian space with many Inner Council systems, including the Citadel. Unfortunately the region remains largely underdeveloped, lacking any major colonies since the devastating Rachni Wars reduced the handful of garden worlds once present in the cluster to barren wastelands. Despite long running efforts by the Turian Hierarchy to police the region, its relative isolation has unfortunately made it a favoured hiding spot for pirates and slavers looking to strike at the neighbouring trade routes.
[] Flaxiun Nebula (+5 DP) ....a lightly inhabited region located in what was once, prior to their first contact with the other Council races, the outer frontier of Turian controlled space. Today the Flaxiun Nebula finds itself comfortably nestled well within the core territories of the Turian Hierarchy. Although only a single moderately sized colony is located within the Nebula itself. In keeping with the Hierarchy's internal security policies the region is regularly patrolled despite its extremely secure position within the Relay network.
[] The Mar'num Corridor (+2 DP) ...a narrow section of the Relay network connecting Batarian space with the Terminus Systems. Though officially claimed by the Batarian Hegemony, the Mar'num Corridor remains only slightly less lawless than the neighboring Terminus clusters. Known to be home to various pirate groups, slavers and a handful of mining outposts operated by the Hegemony, the region is largely avoided by most law-abiding citizens. Ongoing efforts to bring order to the Corridor by the Council have been continually stymied by the Hegemony, who claim to be making progress in their own efforts to police the area.
[] The Castli Cluster (+1 DP) ...a distant star cluster located deep within the Terminus Systems. Originally surveyed shortly before the outbreak of the Rachni wars, the Castli Cluster would for a time become a refuge for thousands of unfortunate colonists displaced by the relentless insectoid swarms. Although the clusters prospects began to improve somewhat following the end of the conflict, limited interstellar trade and a lack of attention from a Citadel Council still recuperating after the conflict with Rachni led to the region, like most of the Terminus Systems, slipping through the cracks. Today the cluster is still home to several independent colonies, though with most being under the control of various pirate gangs, criminal syndicates, or even self-proclaimed Terminus warlords.
[] The Simos Reaches (+2 DP) ...a largely unexplored region of space located beyond the Perseus Veil, territory that once belonged to the Quarians but is now controlled by their malicious creations; the Geth. Little is known of the Simos Reaches, with no organic being, Council affiliated or otherwise, able to bypass the defensive fortifications and ships blockading former Quarian space. What the Geth have been up to in the region for the last three centuries, if anything, remains unknown.
The first officially confirmed act of space piracy in human territories occurred in 2239, when the cargo shuttle Zeta-31 was attacked. The shuttle was engaged in transporting platinum from an automatic mining station to a processing center when it was intercepted by a group of armed space raiders. This incident marked a turning point in the perception of space travel, highlighting the vulnerabilities of commercial vessels in the vastness of space.
The Attack on Zeta-31
On April 15, 2239, the Zeta-31 was en route to the processing center located in the orbit of Mars when it was ambushed by a group of criminals who had meticulously planned the robbery. This group, composed of various civilian specialists—including former engineers, security experts, and navigators—had come together specifically for this heist.
As the shuttle approached a remote sector of space, the criminals executed their plan. They disabled the shuttle's communication systems and propulsion, rendering it helpless. In a brutal act to eliminate any witnesses, they killed the crew of the Zeta-31. To cover their tracks and make the incident appear as an unfortunate accident, the pirates subsequently destroyed the shuttle, leaving no trace of their involvement.
Aftermath
The attack resulted in the loss of valuable cargo and raised alarms across the interstellar trade community. Although the crew managed to send a distress signal before their demise, the destruction of the shuttle left investigators with little evidence. The United Earth Space Force (UESF) launched an investigation, but the criminals had already vanished into the depths of space with the stolen platinum.
Due to the fact that humanity had not yet divided into several independent interstellar nations and its presence in space was still relatively small, the criminals were eventually caught when they attempted to sell the stolen platinum on the black market. Law enforcement agencies, working in collaboration with the ITSC, were able to trace the illicit sale back to the group responsible for the Zeta-31 attack.
Evolution of Space Piracy
For a long time, piracy in human territories primarily consisted of small groups of individuals attacking cargo shuttles to steal precious resources. These acts were often opportunistic and limited in scope, as the relatively unified nature of humanity and the nascent state of interstellar commerce made it easier for authorities to respond swiftly to such incidents.
However, following the division of humanity into several independent interstellar nations, piracy became much more widespread. The fragmentation of political power and the emergence of competing interests led to an increase in organized pirate groups, who began to exploit the vulnerabilities in trade routes and the lack of coordinated security measures among the newly formed nations.
Legal and Political Implications
The rise in piracy prompted a reevaluation of space law and the security measures in place for commercial space travel. In response to the growing threat, the United Nations established the Interstellar Trade Security Council (ITSC) in 2240, which aimed to create regulations and protocols to protect cargo vessels and ensure safe passage through space.
Human Biotics Before the First Contact War (Potentially Canon)
Human biotics are individuals who possess the ability to manipulate dark energy, a phenomenon that emerged following a series of starship accidents in the 2150s. These accidents dispersed element zero (eezo) over populated areas, leading to the birth of the first human biotics. However, the recognition and understanding of biotic abilities were not immediate.
Development of Biotic Abilities
Exposure to eezo does not guarantee the development of biotic abilities. In fact, the majority of fetuses exposed to element zero do not exhibit any effects. Some may suffer from severe complications, such as brain tumors. Statistically, only about one in ten eezo-exposed infants will develop biotic talents that are strong and stable enough to warrant formal training. Furthermore, these abilities are not always permanent. In rare instances, individuals who do not show biotic potential in childhood may develop abilities during young adulthood due to additional exposure to eezo.
Role of Dr. Ellen Ryder
Dr. Ellen Ryder played a pivotal role in the study and development of human biotics. As the first scientist to create biotic implants, she faced significant challenges due to the lack of existing knowledge about biotic phenomena. The early days of biotic research were fraught with uncertainty, as scientists struggled to understand the implications of eezo exposure and the mechanics of biotic abilities. Dr. Ryder's groundbreaking work in developing the electronic brain implant was crucial for enabling biotics to harness their powers effectively. The implants, once installed, became a lifelong necessity for biotics, as they could only be replaced or altered through dangerous surgical procedures.
Government Initiatives
In an effort to identify and regulate biotic individuals, governments initiated mandatory testing for biotic potential in newborns. This program aimed to detect biotic abilities early on, allowing for appropriate training and integration into society. However, the testing process was controversial and raised ethical concerns regarding the treatment of those identified as biotics. Many parents were apprehensive about the implications of their children being classified as biotics, fearing societal stigma and discrimination.
Development of Implants and Training Programs
The creation of the first biotic implants and training programs was a monumental task that required extensive research and experimentation. The initial implants were rudimentary and often unreliable, leading to a high rate of complications during the training process. Biotics had to undergo rigorous biofeedback therapy to develop conscious control over their nervous systems, a process that was both long and arduous. The training programs were designed to help biotics learn to manipulate dark energy effectively, allowing them to generate mass effect fields for various applications, including lifting objects, creating protective barriers, and immobilizing enemies.
Decline in Public Interest and Current Status of Biotics
As the initial excitement surrounding the discovery of biotics began to wane, the general public's interest in this field quickly diminished. The early stages of biotic training and research were fraught with challenges, particularly due to the health complications associated with the first implant samples. Many individuals experienced severe side effects, including neurological disorders, chronic pain, and in some cases, life-threatening conditions. These adverse reactions led to widespread fear and skepticism regarding the safety and efficacy of biotic abilities, causing many to question the value of pursuing further research in this area.
As a result, funding for biotic studies dwindled, and public enthusiasm shifted towards other scientific endeavors that promised more immediate and tangible benefits. The lack of successful biotic applications in everyday life and combat further contributed to the decline in interest. With only a limited number of biotics demonstrating their abilities, the potential of this unique skill set remained largely untapped, leaving humanity unable to fully unlock the advantages that biotics could offer.
Nearly 200 years later, the field of biotics is primarily pursued by a small community of scientists and enthusiasts who remain dedicated to exploring its possibilities. Despite the advancements in technology and understanding, the practical applications of biotics in both combat and daily life remain quite limited. The general population continues to view biotics with a mix of curiosity and apprehension, largely due to the historical context of health issues and the ongoing stigma surrounding biotic abilities.
Nevertheless, some human interstellar nations have implemented mandatory testing for biotic potential in newborns, driven by the belief that early identification could lead to better training and integration of biotics into society. These tests aim to discover and nurture any latent abilities, with the hope that future generations may overcome the challenges faced by their predecessors and unlock the full potential of biotic powers. However, the societal divide regarding biotics persists, as many still harbor fears about the implications of such abilities, leading to ongoing debates about the ethics and safety of biotic experimentation and training

CODEX ENTRY: RELAY 314
Relay 314, currently pending official re-designation following the events of the Human "First Contact War", is a Primary Mass Relay located within the Mar'num Corridor. Originally discovered by the Council races shortly after the conclusion of the Rachni wars, the Relay was left dormant in accordance with the laws enacted by the Citadel Council prohibiting the activation of any Relay whose partner had not also been identified and secured.
Relay 314 would remain inactive for over two millennia, only becoming active in the year 2657 (G.S) following the Humans activation of its partner Relay, designated the "Shanxi-Theta" Relay. This unexpected activation and Humanities subsequent exploration of the Mar'num Corridor would inadvertently lead to the infamous "Relay 314 Incident", the outbreak of the Human "First Contact War".
CODEX ENTRY: THE MAR'NUM CORRIDOR
The Mar'num Corridor is a narrow section of the Relay network running from Batarian space through to the Terminus Systems. Whilst historically this region was claimed by the Batarian Hegemony, the Citadel Council has never officially recognized these claims, citing the Hegemony's inability or unwillingness to properly address the Corridor's rampant piracy and illegal slave practices.
Any Batarian claims of ownership over the Corridor have only been further contested by the sudden emergence of Humanity. Who first gained access to the wider galactic community through the previously dormant Relay 314, located within the Corridor itself…

-ESTABLISHMENT
Following the discovery of ancient alien structures on Mars, Humanity and its various national governments were left with indisputable proof that not only did intelligent life exist beyond their home world, but that it had at one point even been present within their own solar system.
Almost immediately talks were held between the handful of nations whose space agencies operated colonies on the Martian surface. Whilst geo-political relations between Earth's major powers at the time were relatively friendly and stable, especially compared to previous centuries, it was feared by many that one, or even a handful of nations could come to monopolize access to the ruins. Along with any advanced alien technologies that may still lay within them.
In the interest of maintaining both the global balance of power and cordial relations between the majority of nations, various agreements were drawn up, ensuring that all of the major Earth powers would contribute to the effort of excavating the ruins. With any artefacts, technology or scientific insights uncovered during the process to be shared equally amongst all members.
This international partnership, initially dubbed the "Solar System Exploration and Research Alliance", soon set itself to work. Meticulously excavating, exploring, cataloguing and analysing everything that could be recovered from the xeno-archaeological site.
As this early iteration of the Alliance delved deeper beneath the Martian sands, they soon discovered [DATA CORRUPTED].

[ ] …a ruined crater. (+5 DP) Though it had clearly once been the site of a far larger facility, the majority of whatever the Protheans had built on Mars appears to have been the target of a sustained orbital bombardment. Who exactly destroyed this particular facility, whether it was the Protheans themselves or some other hostile species remains unknown to this day. However with precious little left intact Humanity was left with far fewer examples of Prothean technology when compared to many other species. Which in turn, greatly hindered Humanities development of Eezo based technologies….
[ ] …a small outpost. (+2 DP) Whilst meagre compared to what has been found within the home systems of many Council races, this small abandoned outpost nevertheless provided examples of advanced Prothean technology. Enough to jumpstart Humanities understanding of Element Zero and the Mass Effect. Both of which having only been considered fringe science up to that point by Earth's scientific community….
[ ] …a sizable research station. (Canon) (+0 DP) Believed to have once been used by the Protheans as a base of operations from which to study ancient Humans, the facility was found to contain a variety of advanced tools, sensor equipment, self-contained computer systems, even a handful of inoperable but otherwise intact spaceships. A treasure trove of technology centuries, if not millennia ahead of anything Humanity was capable of producing...
[ ] …a hidden military installation. (-10 DP) Considered potentially one of the most significant and well preserved Prothean archaeological sites in the known galaxy, this facility is believed to have once been a major military installation. The exact details of what was found inside remains unknown to the general public, classified at the highest levels of Humanities governments even centuries later. The fact that it was a military installation, and that whatever it contained directly contributed to Humanities rapid development of Eezo based technologies, are some of the only pieces of information available…
The Mar'num Corridor is a narrow section of the Relay network that connects Batarian space with the Terminus Systems. Although officially claimed by the Batarian Hegemony, the Corridor remains only slightly less lawless than the neighboring Terminus clusters. It is known to be home to various pirate groups, slavers, and a handful of mining outposts operated by the Hegemony, making the region largely avoided by most law-abiding citizens.
The development of the Mar'num Corridor by the Batarians began around the year 2432 (Galactic Standard). Officially, this expansion was attributed to the Batarian population reaching a threshold for a comfortable life within their system, necessitating the colonization of nearby systems. Unofficially, the primary motivation was the Hegemony's desire to establish a transfer point between its home world and the Terminus Systems.
The Mar'num Corridor has since become the second largest black market in the galaxy, but unlike Omega, it is entirely controlled by the Batarians. The Corridor's development has led to the strengthening of numerous criminal organizations, resulting in brutal raids on various colonies.
The Mar'num Incident
The Mar'num Incident was precipitated by a series of escalating pirate raids that plagued Citadel colonies close to the region. In the years leading up to the incident, numerous attempts were made to negotiate a peaceful resolution to the growing lawlessness in the Corridor. The Turians, in particular, sought to engage the Batarian Hegemony in discussions aimed at curbing the activities of the rampant pirate groups that were increasingly threatening trade routes and civilian safety. However, as the raids intensified and the situation deteriorated, the Turians found themselves with no viable options left.
In 2547, the Turians made the controversial decision to launch a military strike against the pirate bases within the Mar'num Corridor, viewing it as a last resort to protect their interests and restore some semblance of order. Unfortunately, the fallout from this raid was catastrophic; many of the pirate bases targeted were officially listed as Batarian colonies, igniting a significant political firestorm. The Turians were compelled to compensate for the losses incurred by the Batarian colonies, but they refused to return the slaves taken during the raids and did not impose serious penalties on the officers involved in the operation.
In response to the perceived injustices, the Batarians demanded additional punishments for the Turians and the establishment of a special status for their colonies in the Mar'num Corridor. When the Citadel Council refused these demands, the Batarians took drastic measures by closing their embassy in the Citadel and severing diplomatic and economic relations with the Council. This decisive action effectively transformed the Batarian Hegemony into a closed rogue state, further entrenching the divide between the Batarians and the Citadel races and setting the stage for ongoing conflict and lawlessness in the region.
A Century After the Mar'num Incident
One hundred years after the Mar'num Incident, the Corridor remains a hotbed of criminal activity and lawlessness. The Batarian Hegemony has continued to assert its control over the region, but its governance is characterized by corruption and inefficiency. The black market thrives, with the Corridor now serving as a major hub for illicit trade, including weapons, drugs, and slaves. Criminal organizations operate with relative impunity, often engaging in violent turf wars that further destabilize the area and endanger the lives of innocent civilians.
Efforts by the Citadel Council to restore order have been met with staunch resistance from the Hegemony, which claims to be making progress in policing the area while simultaneously allowing criminal organizations to flourish. The political fallout from the Mar'num Incident has left a lasting rift between the Batarians and the Citadel races, with diplomatic relations remaining strained and largely non-existent. Many Council races view the Hegemony as a rogue state, and their opinions on the situation vary significantly.
As a result, the Mar'num Corridor has become a symbol of the ongoing struggle between lawlessness and order in the galaxy, with its future uncertain. The legacy of the Mar'num Incident continues to shape the dynamics of power in the region, as both the Hegemony and the Council grapple with the consequences of their actions a century ago.

Human History Prior to the 2148 Discovery and Subsequent Formation of the Systems Alliance (Non-Canon)
Human History Prior to the 2148 Discovery and Subsequent Formation of the Systems Alliance
2086: The United States of America exits NATO following an increasingly isolationist electorate and begins pursuing isolationist policies, causing the global economy to stagnate and mass economic slumps to engulf much of the world. Russia's President at the time is subsequently overthrown in a coup by Russian revanchists in the government, and swift embargoes against it as a result follow suit, and the Russian economy stagnates.
2096: Following an increasingly radicalized election with President Kaitlin Cheung elected to government, Canada and Mexico are both invaded and forcibly inducted into the newly declared United North American States. Outrage at the forced annexation results in the November 1st attack on the Statue of Liberty, kickstarting off the Second American Civil War between multiple secessionist factions and government figures declaring the others illegitimate, splitting the armed forces in the process. The resultant civil war causes global economic collapse.
2097: The newly revanchist Russia invades former Soviet and Russian Empire territory to 're-establish Russian dignity', with little aid given to said invaded countries due to economic chaos within the European Union and the ongoing civil war in Europe, causing their collapse. Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan fall in short order. Meanwhile, Libya is declared for under an extremely revanchist pan-Arabian government.
2098: The People's Republic of China attempts an invasion of Taiwan following the collapse of the United North American States into civil war. The initial invasion attempts fail due to Japanese and Asian SEATO members entering into the war on behalf of Taiwan and conducting an incredibly successful blockade, forcing a white peace. Mass reorganization of the Chinese Central Committee and Politburo begins and proceeds following this national humiliation. The global economy begins to recover. Libya declares war against Algeria, then Morocco.
2099 - 2102 : The global economy mostly re-establishes itself, and Russia subsequently invades Ukraine. NATO joins the war in favour of Ukraine, but are forced backwards due to military budgets being slashed into the dirt during recovery and are forced to subsequently accept a humiliating peace treaty following the capituation of everything east of Germany. Mass discontent rocks Europe following economic and societal turmoil within those nations, as Russia declares a national victory. Meanwhile, the Arab states declare war on Israel and successfully triumph, but are rocked by nuclear detonations in return while Libya successfully defeats both Morocco and Algeria on the field of battle.
2103: Revolutions rock Europe as a furious population begins overthrowing increasingly unpopular governments following the second economic collapse as a result of the First European War, and civil wars and coups begin following suit. NATO disintegrates as a result, but is replaced with the European Internationale as communist revolutions succeed in overthrowing their governments and defeat every other contender, which declares revanchist intentions against Russia and a declaration to 'free Eastern Europe from Russian tyranny' and begins arranging the overthrowing of neutral governments within Europe in favour of communist ones. Russia prepares for a second European War.
2101: The Second American Civil War concludes with the Pacific Command Centre triumphing, declaring itself the true United North American States following the defeat of the Cheung Presidency and the collapse of secessionist armies in the field. Reconstruction begins, but major concessions are given to its constituents in order to pacify them. Meanwhile, the People's Republic of China re-organizes into the Chinese People's Federation, with the New Leftists leading in favour. Threatening movements are made towards South Korea.
2104: The Second European War begins as the European Internationale challenges CSTO on the field of battle. With military budgets set to an all-time high and organized uprisings within the occupied Eastern European states, CSTO is swept aside and the European Internationale plunges itself like a dagger into the heart of Russia, successfully decapitating Russian high command during the attack on Moscow. Though the cost on Europe itself is high as what nuclear bombs Russia managed to rebuild following the Nuclear Disarmament Treaty of 2069 rock the continent as one last act of spite, Russia eventually declares unconditional surrender following nuclear retaliation by European Internationale members who also managed to scrounge up nukes to create.
2105: Extremely high feelings of unity within Europe results in the formation of the European Union, as borders are cast aside in favour of economic, political and cultural unification within Europe, resulting in the world's second superstate being born. Meanwhile, China declares war on the Pacific Defense Treaty Organization (composing of Japan, South Korea, the Kingdom of Thailand, Malaysia, India, New Zealand and Australia) with the aid of its partners within the East Asian Defense Initiative (composing of China, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, the Phillipines and the Myanmar puppet government)
2107: The war concludes in China's favour, with India being humilated and pushed back in the wake of a resurgent China and most of Asia conquered by the new hegemon of Asia. The East Asian Defense Initiative declares victory, as the Chinese People's Federation declares itself the world's third superstate while annexing most of Asia or putting them under puppet governments while conceding any territorial demands by its partners to appease them. Meanwhile, an increasingly unified Arab world successfully unite into the Pan-Arab Federation following succeeding triumph after triumph against nations perceived as 'Western-influenced puppet states'.
2108: In the wake of the declaration of four superstates (The United North American's Union, the European Union and the Chinese People's Federation) a united front amongst begins to crystalize, resulting in the formation of the Union of Incorporated States, a global alliance against influence by the superstates by uninvolved states in the Decades of Strife.
2110: With the devastation wreaked upon the world by the European Wars, the Great Asian War and the Second American Civil War, the resultant global hegemons of the world gather to discuss peace. The Chinese People's Federation, the United North American States, the European Union and the Pan-Arab Federation agree to- hopefully- never go to war on Earth again, in the wake of billions of corpses resultant from the war.
2128: A new generation dawns. Humanity, following rapid repopulation of the Earth and fixing up as much of it as possible, begins to reach for the stars, competing with one another in hopes of colonizing the cosmos. Space technology is dusted off as the final frontier begins being eyed up once again by the new generation. Space exploration and colonization fervor reaches new heights as all the nations of the world throw enormous portions of their budget into space exploration technology. Russia and India are both deemed 'completely purged of its reactionary tendencies' and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics returns to life alongside the Socialist Republic of India.
2140: The first Mars landing attempt succeeds by China, which rapidly begins mining on Mars. They are soon followed by the European Union, the Second USSR, the United North American States, the Eighth Brazilian Republic, the Socialist Republic of India, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Republic of Indonesia, the Australasian People's Republic, the Second Argentine Republic, the Pan-Arab Federation, the Second Republic of Turkey, the Scandinavian Union, the People's Democratic Republic of Korea, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the Second Republic of South Africa, the Republic of the Phillipines and the Lao People's Democratic Republic.
2144: The European Space Agency manages to claim the title of first to establish a permanent settlement on Mars, though the other superstates and countries involved in Mars rapidly begin to create permanent settlements as well, and the Union of Incorporated States finally joins in on colonization on Mars.
2148: European miners discover prothean ruins on Mars.
My brain has some weird ideas sometimes, and when I saw 'United North American States' and 'Second American Civil War' on the wiki, my brain just went 'but how far can we really go on making this alt-history' and went to town.
Shanxi is a colony of the System Alliance, strategically located near the Shanxi-Theta Relay. It is recognized as humanity's first prison planet and serves as a significant waypoint for various interstellar routes. The planet's history is marked by its transformation from a bustling trade hub to a notorious penal colony.
Historical Background
Early 22nd Century
The heyday of Shanxi occurred in the early 22nd century when it was situated on the border of human space. Its advantageous location allowed it to function as a buffer zone between established human settlements and emerging space colonies. During this period, Shanxi thrived as a commercial center, attracting traders and settlers alike. The planet's economy was bolstered by its role as a marketplace for goods and services, making it a vital link in the expanding network of human civilization in space.
Economic Decline
However, as humanity continued to advance in space exploration and colonization, Shanxi's prominence began to wane. The decline was exacerbated by the depletion of palladium mines in 2298, which had been a significant source of revenue for the planet. As the mines ran dry, the population gradually migrated to other regions in search of better opportunities, leading to a sharp decrease in economic activity.
Establishment of the Prison
In light of the escalating crime rates and the need for a secure facility to contain dangerous criminals, the government proposed the establishment of the first prison planet in the galaxy. The plan was to transform Shanxi into a penal colony, capitalizing on its central location within peaceful human territories. This proposal received approval, and the prison was officially operational by 2342.
Prison Infrastructure
The prison on Shanxi was designed to accommodate a diverse population of criminals from various interstellar nations. It featured state-of-the-art security measures, including advanced surveillance systems and fortified structures to prevent escapes. The facility was equipped to handle a wide range of offenses, from minor infractions to serious crimes, making it a comprehensive solution to the growing problem of interstellar crime.
Space Fleet and Security
To ensure the safety and security of the prison and its inhabitants, the System Alliance deployed a dedicated space fleet to patrol the surrounding areas. This fleet was tasked with monitoring for potential escape attempts, as well as deterring piracy and other criminal activities in the vicinity. The presence of the fleet served as a deterrent to would-be criminals and reinforced the perception of Shanxi as a formidable penal colony.
The fleet operated under strict protocols, conducting regular patrols and maintaining a constant watch over the prison. In addition to safeguarding the facility, the fleet also played a crucial role in transporting prisoners to and from the planet, ensuring that justice was served across the galaxy.
