Distance Learning for fun and profit...

The trick is slamming your hands down in the right pattern :D
*in a distracted tone, staring off into the distance*
I've figured it out...
mp3.1415player...
... is in actuality comprised of an infinite number of monkeys, and all the typewriters are linked to a massive computer with a decent auto-correct and maybe grammerly. 😲

How did I never see it before? ;)

Huh, I need to contact your boss and have them put you on that one recurring customer with the long-term support contract that both sides know costs more than it earns... :D

I found a couple edits (surprisingly; apparently I got here early enough no one has reported them or something?):
and you can tell its not doing her any favors.
it's
It's freaking her out I thing because she doesn't understand what's changed

So, this is what we learned in this chapter...

We got conformation that Emma isn't a Parahuman; Alien PBS apparently knows that anyone can theoretically watch their broadcast, so they've done everything they can to prevent it from being hacked...except Taylor happened; Space Whales are doing things the hard way to get the right answer; Carol is becoming paranoid because it appears that all the villains are retiring and is worried about when the proverbial shoe is going to drop, which is a fair cop; and finally, the veritable army of bodyguards and/or spys protecting and watching over Taylor are not very subtle.

Also, I'm really curious about what happened with Lung in all this.

If this turns out to be anything like Constellations he'll be unionizing, which would be funny. He probably won't be trolling Armsmaster with an Armsmaster speedo, but it can only be amusing. Oh dear I just had the most disturbing/hilarious concept pop into my head of Lung being a walking, talking "Notice me Senpai" trope towards Danny.

I think alien PBS is more "If you're advanced enough to crack subspace communications, you've probably mastered these simpler techniques too" it's just that Taylor jumped to the 3rd from last unlock in the tech tree without any of the previous unlocks.

All those black SUVs around the neighborhood. Subtle much?
Or were they the same one just watching Amy and Victoria? Still not subtle.

Given the various 'meetings' with people that have been going on, I honestly don't think ALL the security is intended to be subtle. I'm sure there's some extremely subtle security, but I suspect the black SUV's and some of the other security is absolutely intended to be noticed... and avoided, on the theory that if you can prevent even some incidents, you lower the risk the Prime Asset takes accidental damage.

I also suspect the not-subtle security is both far more than the average cape or cape gang wants to deal with, and far far less than the subtle security, on the premise that anyone who decides to send in a force that can take the not-subtle security like black SUV's and counter-sniper teams, is going to have zero chance against the subtle security, like antitank missiles, laser-guided artillery rounds, and CIWS in her neighbor's sheds.

...Alien PBS apparently knows that anyone can theoretically watch their broadcast, so they've done everything they can to prevent it from being hacked...

I don't think that was alien PBS doing the subtle observation though. Based on the meta knowledge we have I'm inclined to think it's observation from either something like the PTV shard or the Simurgh. Both would be interested in what seems to be new variables being entered into the cycle, and given Taylor is demonstrating the knowledge base to detect the dimensional shenanigans being used for pre-Trigger monitoring and active Power expression, attempting to make sure they can't be detected would be high priority.

Heh.

Heterodyning... Somewhere in the infinite multiverse Agatha is sitting back and cheering as her Sparkiness feels the distinct tremors of SCIENCE! taking place.

It was when two of the trawlers in the bay sounded their horns at each other, the sounds at slightly different pitches and heterodyning into a complex waveform that rang across the water, that she had a sudden insight and nearly dropped her ice cream cone while trying to extract a notebook from her jacket to write it down while she thought of it.
Ah, there it is. The "Eurika" moment she was waiting for.

and finally, the veritable army of bodyguards and/or spys protecting and watching over Taylor are not very subtle.
Nonsense. You will note that none of the characters that don't know such security would be in place have noticed any of it and thought it was out of place or security.

Taylor knows what to look for. To everyone who doesn't, it is very subtle indeed.

You would be surprised just how popular Black SUVs are to those that are able to afford luxury vehicles that are still practical in areas that get significant snowfall. Having a number show up just means new money is moving into the area, which is hardly news at this point.

Which, by the by, is Why they are used in this role; they are common enough in affluent areas to go unremarked upon and heavily built enough to deal with problem situations.

@mp3.1415player I know that you are hiding something really big in this story. I say because last two chapters have small hints of the important pieces in this story.
I believe that you will soon be revealing something hugely important to this story.

After rereading, I just noticed the chapter title. Now I'm imagining Taylor inside a flying saucer and abducting parahumans for probing.

I love the way you describe the entities' science, and Taylor's approach, and the little human moments between everyone.

Lung being a walking, talking "Notice me Senpai" trope towards Danny.
That brings to mind a very funny mental image - Lung (who for some reason looks like Bowser) in a Sailor Moon Saifuku, complete with Tiara...

Wait, WHAT? Oh sweet zombie shinagami, I Missed that completely!

Ah, there it is. The "Eurika" moment she was waiting for.
Eurika isn't anything special - Taylor's been visited by them several times now.

The girl shook her head in annoyance. Paradoxically the randomness of certain aspects of the subspace signal made it more difficult to properly deal with compared to something sensible like her alien tutor channel. They knew how to do it right, and had done so.

She knew how to do it right.

But whoever or whatever was responsible for this apparently didn't. Or didn't actually care.

Taylor wasn't sure which was more potentially annoying.
Ha, that internal monologue reminded me of the Cygnans from the old novel The Jupiter Theft, who would really irritate this Taylor. They genuinely don't care about "doing it right", and don't even have the excuse the Entities do of being stupid/instinct driven. The Cygnans only care that a solution works, and once it works at all stop searching for a better one no matter how horribly inefficient or destructive the one they have is.

For example, their fleet of ships uses entire gas giants to fuel their interstellar drive - thus the title of the book, they steal Jupiter; when humans steal the design they rapidly improve it to the point it only needs comet sized masses for fuel. Not because humans were more advanced or clever than the Cygnans, but simply because they bothered. The Cygnans could have done the same at any time if they cared to put the slightest effort into it, but they just don't.

I'm just picturing this Taylor encountering them and being all "OK, now I KNOW which is more annoying !"

Well, she does have a Shard pinned down in her basement lab by it's observation portal and is poking it with every bit of sensory gear she can dream up. And she's trying to find safe ways to force the connection open for easier access to the other side. Sounds like a typical case of alien anal probing to me.
👾👽:cool2:

Space Whales are doing things the hard way to get the right answer
Me think that the individual shards know what they want to do and how to do it very efficiently... except their main body Zion don't give a damn except "bash things together for solution" usually while currently he is "too depressed to care".

Welp, Taytay happened, so maybe it's time to change boss...

Leet's Shard: [If I have to redesign one more powercell because it's 'not the right color'...]
Especially annoying when, for some tinkertech, the COLOR ACTUALLY MATTERS. Yes, that invisibility device does only work when you are tip-toeing, and the only activation phrase possible is "nin-nin". No, your power armor does NOT come without the paper and wax seals, they are integral to its function and we don't know why. Yes, that battery HAS to be blue and painted with a yellow lightning bolt, otherwise it is just a brick of moderately expensive materials. Tinkertech is WEIRD, and not ALL Tinkertech is "blackboxed technology": some of it is "shard doing things to objects". Hence why Dauntless is a Tinker, a Tinker/Trump, but still a Tinker.
