So did Ellas pass the happy days of his youth in study and in play. His first friend was Fen'ghil'lan, the daughter of his father's colleague. They shared the bond of magic and the struggle that the gift imparted on the young. For children often walk the long paths of the Beyond in ways that adults can scarcely imagine, twice fold for mage children. A dreamer in the Beyond is like a light, dim and grey, twinkling in the mists of perception, but for a mage the light is alike a roaring fire and the denizens therein are attracted like moths to the piercing brightness. Once in the eighth winter of his life Ellas dreamt of the legends of his people, watching the tale of Ghilan'nain unfold in the mind's eye, when the bound shape of her violated form spoke unto him. She promised him great things, a life of ease and comfort, adventure in the woods forever, and an end to all study and hardship. The training of his parents reinforced his heart and he rebuffed the demon's lure. But this was but the first of his many trials.

Though Fen'ghil'lan was his first friend she was not his best. Foremost in the group of young Elvhen in the heart of Ellas was Athras, Half in Shadow, who walked often in the dark paths of the hunt and the alleys of Halamshiral. Though Athras at first scorned company and preferred only the companionship of beasts, Ellas's place in his heart soon grew as well. Soon, the two were inseparable and walked the paths of the Dales together in secret dells and lost streams. When they were not alone in the natural world the two would join their group in Halamshiral, often being dragged to parties among the high society of the great city. Athras could not stand such places and felt claustrophobic among the chattering people and high towers, but even his dark mood would be lightened by Davhalla, greatest among the group in the renown of Halamshiral. Her laughter would set the heart alight and warm the darkest winter night.

Such were the days of happiness extinguished. In the twelfth summer of Elllas's life his father and mother decreed that the time had come for his formal education in magic. The basics of magic were already understood well by Ellas but the use of anything beyond the most simple of spells lay beyond his reach. Therefore the Mahariels decided to apprentice Ellas to learn the discipline of one of the four schools of magic:

[ ] Venurmytha Rasa, Creation mage. Creation magic manipulates natural forces, transforming what exists and bringing new things into being. Creation requires considerable finesse, more than any other school, and is therefore rarely mastered. Those mages who have made a serious study of creation are the highest in demand, useful in times of peace as well as war.

[ ] Midha Mahariel, Entropy mage and Ellas's mother. Entropy is the opposing force of Creation; for this reason it is often called the School of Negation. Nothing lives without death. Time inevitably brings an end to all things in the material world, and yet in this ending is the seed of a beginning. A river may flood its banks, causing havoc, but bring new life to its floodplain. The fire that burns a forest ushers in new growth. And so it is with entropic magic that the forces of erosion, decay, and destruction are manipulated to create anew.

[ ] Fel'assan Alis, Primal mage. Primal magic is the magic of war: Fire, ice, and lightning. Devastation. This is what the vast majority imagines when they hear the word "magic."

[ ] Ematuelanuren Alis, Spirit mage. Spirit is opposed by the Primal School. It is the school of mystery, the ephemeral school. This is the study of the invisible energies which surround us at all times, yet are outside of nature. It is from the Beyond itself that this magic draws its power. Students of this school cover everything from direct manipulation of mana and spell energies to the study and summoning of spirits themselves.

Because I'd like to actually play a magical character that actually mainlines the simple path of destruction rather than something more esoteric.

You dangle the option that lets us Mad Science the best in front of SV and expect anything else?

Ellas left Halamshiral then in his twelfth year and went east to the foothills of the Frostback mountains where Venurmytha Rasa dwelt. As he walked in the cold morning of early spring from the halls and spires of his youth he was met by his friends, each in turn kissing his brow and wishing him well. Ladahlen gifted to Ellas a dagger of his father's temple, a dar'misu of Elvhen craft. Fen'ghilan in turn gave to him a book of spells and Davhalla a small sketch of the group of friends laughing on the banks of a wooded spring. Athras was last and clasped a hand on Ellas's shoulder, bringing their heads to rest together. "Dareth shiral, ma falon."* he spoke with tears in his eyes. He pressed into Ellas's hands a statue of a halla and leaning down kissed his clasped hands. Ellas sighed and wiping a tear from his own eyes planted a kiss on his dearest friends forehead, "Dareth shiral, elgar'vhenan."*

For many years then did Ellas walk and learn under his mistress. She worshipped Mythal and kept in the Frostbacks a shrine to her where pilgrims and the sick could come from all over the Dales and seek healing and guidance and, indeed, justice. Ellas and Venurmytha walked at all times through the mountains and the dells, to the sea in the north and to the southern Arbor Wilds where the ruins of Elvhenan could still be found.

Once they walked down a river in the shade of willow trees. "Creation magic is the act of balancing and transforming nature itself. It is not enough to speak the incantations or to manifest energy as with destruction magic. To summon a fireball and to scorch all before you is an act of interior will, drawing upon the Beyond's power to rend and destroy the natural world. Creation is far more subtle." She stopped and leaned down placing a hand in the dark soil of the riverbed. "To heal a wound or to draw forth the very vines to make war is the same process. To understand the nature of a thing so deeply that it dwells within your very bones. And then to break, influence, or hasten the natural process."

Thus did Ellas seek to learn the art of creation. His duties were most often to clean and maintain the shrine of Mythal and to go often and study alone in the woods. He also acted as Rasa's assistant when she would heal the wounded or sick who had been brought to her shrine. Her skill as a healer was exemplary and she taught Ellas that whenever possible natural remedies should be sought over the brute force of the Beyond's magic. He did not at that time understand her lesson.

He passed the long four years in that manner and by the time he was entering the sixteenth year of his life that Venurmytha Rasa took him east and north into the tall peaks of the Frostbacks in winter. It was deadly cold and they walked for many days and nights until they reached a great mountain. "There it stands, Ellas, Hahren'alastarsyl, Elder Mountain. Let us climb." So they climbed high along windswept paths trod by mountain goats and Avarr clansmen. At last after a great journey and many close calls the two stood on the peak. On the peak was a small statue of Mythal and an altar before it. Upon the altar was a staff of ash and upon its head a dragon. In the jaws of the dragon was held a laurel branch. "Ellas, my student, take up your staff. I name it Mis'atish'an, Blade of Our Peace."

Ellas took the staff in his hand and felt it. Smiling, he thanked her and bowed low. It was then she bid him lie down upon the altar and set her pack down. "I have decided that along with this gift you are an adult in my eyes. Thus when we descend from Hahren'alastarsyl, you will be an adult in the eyes of the Elvhen. I shall now apply the Vallaslin, the blood writing. Which of the Creators will you be dedicated to?"

[ ] Elgar'nan, also known as the All-Father, the Eldest of the Sun and He Who Overthrew His Father. He represents fatherhood and vengeance, and leads the pantheon with the goddess Mythal.

[ ] Mythal, the Protector and the All-Mother, and goddess of love, is the patron of motherhood and justice and leads the pantheon with her male counterpart, Elgar'nan.

[ ] Falon'Din is the elven God of Death and Fortune and guides the dead to the Beyond. He and his twin brother, Dirthamen, are the eldest children of Elgar'nan the All-Father and Mythal the Protector.

[ ] Dirthamen is the twin brother of Falon'Din and is the elven god of secrets and knowledge, and master of the ravens Fear and Deceit. Dirthamen gave to elves the gift of knowledge and taught them loyalty and faith in family.

[ ] Andruil the Huntress, also known as the Lady of Fortune, is the elven goddess of the hunt.

[ ] Sylaise, the Hearthkeeper, is the goddess of all the domestic arts and the sister of Andruil the Huntress. Sylaise gave the elves fire, and taught them how to weave rope and thread, and to use herbs and magic for healing purposes.

[ ] June is the elven Master of Crafts. He is variously described either as a brother to Andruil and Sylaise or as Sylaise's husband. He taught the elves to make bows, arrows, and knives to hunt Andruil's gifts.

[ ] Ghilan'nain is called the Mother of the halla, white deer-like creatures revered by the Elvhen, and goddess of guides and navigation.

For visualization
"Dareth shiral, ma falon." = "Farewell, my friend."

"Dareth shiral, elgar'vhenan." = "Farewell, spirit of my heart."
