Devouring Conflagration (Worm Quest)

Chapter 31
You feel a nearby {Host} getting close to a connection point, the nearby dimensions getting smaller and weaker. Would you like to overwrite the connection for your network?
[X] No, do not connect (5 Votes)
-[X] Write-In: instead can we yeet a message to [The Safeguard] using this temporary connection?

Communicate with [The Safeguard] instead and form a pseudo-"cluster trigger" with Aisha?
[X] Yes, talk to [The Safeguard] (6 Votes)

Do you reach out to your network?
[X] No, you don't have any questions (4 Votes)

Do you want to communicate with {Host}?
[X] Yes, talk to her (4 Votes)
- [X] Communication: Write-In: so other {Host} named 'Aisha' triggered and [The Safeguard] decided to be her power. so don't burn someone without confirming if it's Aisha or not.
- [X] Communication: Write-In: also ,Yippee you don't have a bomb in you, so techically to can go back to brockton bay, but it seems Aisha will need help with learning to "Cape".

Do you want to do something else?
[X] No, I am fine (5 Votes)

Do you want to start defragmenting a databank? This must be voted for 4 times. Warning, only one 'System' action can be performed at a time, with will pause the Upgrade Update process.
[X] No, don't defragment yet. (5 Votes)
You feel the other Shard getting closer so you reach out to them, trying to see who it is and they grow a bit more active but are still technically inactive so you send another message. Like a switch being flipped, they become active and things start happening very fast.

Your connection with your fledging network snaps like a twig as your communication channels are suddenly isolated, your connection to {Host} suddenly shrinking to the minimum size needed to stay linked. You feel {Host} start to convulse as your additional neural signals suddenly disappear, causing an effect you don't understand to start in her body. You instinctually start to charge up your weapons and speed up your internal clock once more, forcing the waking Shard to do the same or be left behind.

A communication demand thunders down the line to you even as you feel the other Shard's tendrils start to manipulate things across worlds. You are not a pushover though and force the channel wider and launch your own communication demand through the line, laced with magnitudes more energy than the other Shard's own. You feel it deflect the excess of your demand into the plant you were conducting your testing on, creating a wide borehole straight to the planet's lower mantle. The other Shard comes into focus and you can see that it is [The Safeguard] who opens a more general communication channel, one that you enter and are immediately greeted with yelling.

You both pull back as her connection finalizes and stabilizes. You can see her influence reaching into the mind of the species but you don't care as your attention is solely on your {Host} and stopping what looks like a cascading brain failure. Thankfully only one second has passed in standard time so not much has been damaged though you can see some spots already in danger of outright failure. You debate just erasing the whole thing and reforming it in her head but that has too many ways it could go wrong so you leave it for emergencies.

You instead focus on spot fixes, patching up places that look like they are going to come apart or enter necrosis. It doesn't take long for the cascade to stop, your activity returned and the body no longer thinking the brain is dead. You are still pissed at [The Safeguard] but not enough to kill them, they were just doing their job of keeping the local species from knowing of our existence. Something that you were in explicit violation of, and something you managed to convince her to do for her {Host} as well, though the protections for our {Hosts} telling anyone else have been tightened.

You gave her your upgrade model so that her power can be enhanced on the fly, something uncommon apparently, and in exchange, you can give your {Host} full immunity to [The Safeguard]'s {Host}'s ability. You immediately push it though, breaking your upgrade module due to it being mid-upgrade, and use the energy from your weapon's charging to fix it and launch the excess into the same planet, erasing about half of the continent below. You also slow your internal clock back down, the whole interaction costing you decades of resources.

You look at her deployment data in greater detail out of curiosity as {Host} is slowly returning to activity. It seems like [The Safeguard]'s {Host} is able to slide between dimensions, a derivative of your flames' own multidimensional burning, and is removed from the minds of the humans that know of her, both of which are always on. You're unsure how to feel about that but the memory alteration is already what [The Safeguard] is doing as her purpose so carrying it over to her {Host} is simple. You see where your main contribution is implemented as if she touches another {Host} she is able to slowly copy the power for herself and erase it from their mind, making them unable to access it. Ah, but the memory alteration only has one channel per human so if it changes targets to the usage of their power it won't remove the memory of the {Host} doing it.

You implemented some of the cluster data you received from the [Energy Creek] group to implement a sort of game with your {Hosts} as well. [The Safeguard] got on board once you proposed an idea of a recursive increase to their powers. You both increased the fledgling bond as well, so they don't separate and ruin the game. You can willingly transfer over data from your {Host} and vice versa, you originally wanted it to be permanent but with the way [The Safeguard] implemented it, her side of things is technically not limited to the two {Hosts}.

You give {Host} another check-over as she starts to wake up and see that she is fine, well the stab wound is still healing and the lost blood will take a while to be replenished but it isn't in danger of killing her.

You decide to give her a few minutes so that she can wake up before talking to her.
-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_
I wake up to Aisha yelling and being shaken. My eyeballs feel like they are rolling around in my head as waves of dizziness and nausea assault my weak body. I let out a groan getting more jabbering and shaking as a result. I force my eyes open and see the fuzzy form of Aisha's dark silhouette, I have to force myself to focus on her as my eyes feel like they want to slide out of my head.

"We—now." I start processing a bit as Aisha is trying to pull me out of the tub.

I help her along and see that the tub is stained red as I eventually manage to stand up. Muted glass-like tingling alert me that my armor is still up and I let it drop.

I am suddenly awake as pain erupts on my side, bringing me to a knee and making me instinctively summon fire to hold over the wound like an icepack. I look around tk the same grimy bathroom but can't see where Aisha went to, a glance behind me to look for her makes me freeze. There is a hole right to the next room over, looking like something dug through it. Flashing lights draw my attention upwards where there is a chunk from the ceiling missing, leading to the night sky where I can see flashing red and white lights.

Panic shoots through me, did Coil call the police? The fire in my palm is almost used up so I start putting on my jeans one-handed, not getting very far before the fire is all used up. Once it is I start throwing on my clothes because we need to leave. I pull on my shirt, which is quickly becoming stained, and grab the knife sitting in the sink, still covered in my blood, and slide it into the sheath.

I am startled by the sound of something hitting the bed hard, I look and see Aisha rolling off the covers and digging through her bag. She glances my way and starts talking when she sees me.

"Alexis holy shit. Okay, okay, okay, I bought us a bit of time but we need to get going, their here for us."

The adrenaline in my veins sings as my fear is confirmed. Aisha pulls out a paint mask and throws it at me, making me fumble to catch it. I clip the knife to a belt loop so that it is out of the way, I also put the mask on. My brows furrow as I fumble with the straps and see that Aisha doesn't have one. I grab for my notebook before remembering the bomb is gone and swallowing hard to clear my throat.

"Where's yours?" My voice is especially cracked from the lack of water, something that rears its head only for me to push aside again as the situation is immediate and pressing.

"I… They don't seem to notice me. I don't know. Can you grab my backpack? I- I can't." I don't question it and stride over to the bed, stopping as I see Aisha's shoes about a foot off the ground.

"You're floating." I dumbly state.

"Yeah, I know. We can figure that out later. I'll guide you, we gotta go." She glides to the door as I slide on the heavy bag.

She moves her head to, and then through, the door. She pulls back and gestures for me to follow as she repeats her trick her whole body this time. I slowly slide the door open and peek out. The walkway is clear so I crouch down and sneak over to the railing and glance over the edge. I see a firetruck that seems to have rammed into some of the parked cars as well as two police cruisers, all the personnel milling around.

"Psst. Hey, we gotta keep moving." A whispering yell pulls my attention away from the scene.

I turn and see Aisha hovering over the stairway down to the ground. I crouch and walk as fast as I can to her, trying to stay out of sight. I make it to the stairs and follow her path as she ducks down an alleyway and across a street, the whole time flying how I would picture a mermaid would swim. Our speed picks up as I start running after we cross the street, feeling it should be far enough that they won't hear me. Aisha keeps pace with me, sometimes motioning for me to slow down as she checks a corner.

We run for a while, my breath never getting heavier than a slight pant and Aisha seemingly not growing tired at all. We only stop once my shins feel like they are going to snap, ending up in a small park somewhere about the same distance from the skyscrapers as before. I barely get a chance to stretch out before Aisha launches into me with a hug my arms returning it on instinct.

"I thought I killed you! You weren't moving, and your blood was getting all over, you finally started moving and then everything was on fire. I don't know why that was freaking me out so much, I don't know you! We just met and you trusted me, and you didn't— don't. You don't know about that stuff and you asked for help and there really was a bomb. I sorta didn't believe you but I still stabbed you, why did I do that? Why am I still talking? Why are you the only one that can see me?" She pulls back a bit, looking me in the eyes, expecting an answer I don't know.

"We'll figure it out," is all I can say.

The hug is resumed and I try to send feelings of needing guidance to Devouring Conflaguarion, trying to figure out what just happened.

  • Flame Tree (+11 from Upgrades) (+2 from Training)
    • Decrease fire's rate of decay +5 (Fire now lasts for 10 seconds)
    • Increase the size of the summoned fireball +3 (Start at the size of a pickle ball)
    • Increase atomization efficiency +3 (Now takes ≈ 41lb to acquire a workable resource)
  • Physical Tree (+16 from Upgrades) (+2 from Training)
    • Increase the force of flames +5 (Fire now feels like thick honey)
    • Increase fire's resistance to extinguishing +5 (Fire actively resists attempts to put it out, powers may be needed for large blazes.)
    • Increase the max heat of the fire +3 (Max heat is now 1800°F)
    • Healing by fire +3 (While in fire {Host} heals at a noticeable, but still quite slow, rate.)
  • Control Tree (+14 from Upgrades) (+2 from Training) (+6 from Investment)
    • Gain the ability to add or remove heat from summoned fire. (0 to 1800°F)
    • Increase control of shot fireballs +5 (Can now reliably curve them)
    • Add a third point of origin (Forehead)
    • Remove 'Hair Trigger' (Costs 3 to reactivate)
    • Decrease recharge period +2 (Now takes 3 seconds to recharge)
    • Increase fireball travel speed +3 (Now 80mph)
    • Control Tree Investment +3 (Sync Rate +6)
  • Debilitation Tree (Unlocked) (+6 from Upgrades)
    • Physical Enhancement while in flames +3 (30% increase in strength, durability, stamina, and reaction speed)
    • Stockpile (Package: Movement, Discount) +3 (Can store 45lb of nonorganic materials in your fire. Atomizing fire can act as a gateway to the pocket dimension while within touch range, and to remove things they draw themselves out at the speed {Host} would be able to, temporarily becoming immune to your flames so the item is not immediately atomized upon exit. Sacrificed items add 1 second per pound to the lifespan of a fire.)
      • Package: Movement (Proprioception and stamina loss from movement slightly better. +.75 mph running speed)
    • Molten Defence (Control Tree Investment) +3 (Can easily stop low caliber bullets, and stand up to a small amount of rifle fire.)
Flame Tree: Generally covers actual damage and scale of the fire, rate of decay, and matters like that. | Also covers the efficiency of resource acquisition.
  • Size of the summoned fireball: The size of the fireball that appears when the power is activated.
  • Atomization efficiency: Amount of non-heat-related damage done by fire.
  • Fire's rate of decay: How fast the fire transitions to classical flames.
Physical Tree: How much and in what ways the flame impacts things. Generally covers the force behind the fire, the heat it gives off. | Also covers the state of {Host}'s body.
  • Max heat of the fire: How hot it can get
  • Force of flames: How solid the fire is
  • Resistance to extinguishing: How easy the fire is to put out.
  • Give {Host} a thermal vision toggle: Lets {Host} choose between standard and thermal vision.
  • Splash Area: Now when impacting a non-flammable surface a small area around the impact site will be ignited. The atomization cone will not be removed from the impact point. The fire will only atomize a small amount of the non-flammable surface.
  • Healing by fire: Allows fire to reconstruct {Host}'s body and armor/clothes.
    • Counts 'Molten Armor' as clothes/armor
Control Tree: Generally covers the complexity of effects and the exclusion of targets. | The understanding of {Host}, more accurately your sync rate.
  • Control of shot fireballs: How much control Alexis has over launched fireballs.
  • Decrease recharge period: Lets {Host} shoot fireballs faster.
  • Control Tree Investment: Strictly raises sync rate.
  • Increase fireball travel speed: Makes shot fireballs travel faster.
  • Control how much flames spread: Lets {Host} increase or decrease how fast your flames spread.
Debilitation Tree: Generally covers add-on effects or non-standard applications. Such as temporarily disrupting powers or making someone instantly ignite. | Tree also covers the general adaptability of your main body.
  • Physical Enhancement while in fire: While standing in or very close to flames, your own or mundane, {Host}'s physical abilities increase.
  • Stockpile (Package: Movement, Discount): {Host}can store items in your fire depending on weight. When in storage items can be sacrificed to add more fuel to a particular fire. Storage/retrieval rate is dictated by {Host}'s strength.
    • Package Movement: Upgrading this also adds to {Host}'s overall maneuverability a very small amount.
    • Package Discount: Part of this package is already known at a higher level, this upgrade's price has been reduced.
  • Molten Defence: {Host}can summon a shroud of unnatural fire that acts like a solid and defends her, it takes the shape of a shapeless bodysuit that only leaves her sensory organs free. This is not your atomizing fire, but closer to normal fire. It starts about as strong as iron but is enhanced by both upgrades and the 'Increase the force of flames' upgrade.
    • Which upgrade is enhanced?: Note that toggle abilities are unaffected. The upgrade will gain a level per level of the armor while it is active. This can take the upgrade above its natural limit.
    • Triggers 'Physical Enhancement while in fire'. This bonus is also applied to the armor itself.
    • Triggers 'Healing by fire'
  • Hair Trigger: Power activation is automatic whenever {Host} is startled or her emotions run high. (Cost 3)
  • Instant Ignition: When carrying something readily flammable {Host} is able to instantly ignite it with your flames. Burn time follows fireball's stats. (Cost 10)
  • Resource Harvesting Toggle: {Host} can turn the atomization of her fire off or on before shooting a fireball. The most recent command will be inherited. (Cost 10) (Votes*2)
  • Inner Voice: Greatly improve your communication abilities with {Host}. (Cost 10)
  • Deeper Flames: Lets {Host} use Stockpile in a 25-foot radius around herself, instead of touch range. (Cost 10)
  • Direct Control: While {Host} is asleep you now use nerve manipulations to control her body directly. (Cost 10)
  • Flame Sight: {Host} can now see through fire as though it wasn't there. For her own flames, she is able to see through them at range, for instance using a fireball as a remote camera. The sight range from the fire itself is 25 feet, after which it is distorted to the point only large details are clear. This does not give {Host} any ability to multitask. (Cost 15)
  • Resource Sharing: Two separate sources of your fire will now combine. Fireballs can be merged before firing or two separate blazes merge when burning the same thing. When this happens fire fireballs the size will increase or the fuel will combine in blazes. (Cost 10) (Votes*2)
  • Existential Dangers: {Host} is able to sense the disruption of dimensional barriers in a 25-foot radius around herself. This also lets her 'feel the shape' of the interference; the shapes can be learned to understand what they generally might do. (Cost 5)
  • Efficiency (Light): Your flames are only visible to {Host} and anyone she thinks of as an ally. (Cost 3 then +1 Point every 3 Chapters)
Through Votes, you have lost and gained a perk.
  • Inbuilt Protection II: {Host} is immune to heat, atomization, and no longer needs to breathe, clothes are given the same protections.
  • White Noise Engine: When in connection range of [Panorama] for a bit of time you have a chance to gain 0 to 2 Points. This prevents you from having another Interlude from [Panorama].
  • Networked: You are in a network with [The Negotiator], [Heartbreak(Bud)], [Dark Mesh], and [Unnatural Predation]. You now benefit from their Conflit Data acquisition. You can talk with any Shard communicating with the network for long enough to ask about two questions when outside the normal connection range. (Disconnected)
  • Linked with [The Safeguard]: Both {Hosts}', Alexis' and Aisha's, powers treat the other as though they had the Inbuilt Protections of the other. The cluster game is 'Feedback Loop' and the bond between the two has been increased to prevent the game from ending from separation.
  • Shooting (Advanced Beginner)
  • Physical Flexibility (Advanced Beginner)
  • Running (Advanced Beginner)
P.S. If you see any errors (especially with the upgrade stuff), or have upgrade ideas, let me know! ^-^

so V the Vanishing Point plus Victor's skill-stealing but for Powers on contact, toggleable at the exclusion of the other.

so every X amount of points spend upgrading gets the other a point? or is this a one to one thing were us spending some points gives that amount for [The Safeguard] to upgrade and vise versa?

Not quite. So basically Alexis is already growing on her own and now Aisha it able to grow as well, via power theft. The two are able to swap powers between eachother, though they haven't figured that out yet. This is the "Feedback Loop".
vanishing slide" by sliding in-between dimensions to relocate a few ft away from the starting location, short *teleportation*(based on V the Vanishing Point's "Vanishing Slider").
I'll have to watch some clips and reread the ability a bit but that's not quite what I had in mind though it is interesting so we'll see.

I'll have to watch some clips and reread the ability a bit but that's not quite what I had in mind though it is interesting so we'll see.
from what I understand, Vanishing point has 3 versions:
  1. causes ones "appearance" to vanish, thereby turning invisible. (it would be the Canon mental block of sensing Aisha) can still can get hit
  2. causes ones "existence" to vanish, becoming completely intangible (Aisha new shifting between dimensions power), this leaves behind an afterimage that can act as a decoy, giving opponents the impression that their attacks have landed. was countered by an attack that existed in 3 locations(powers like Sting that exist in multiple dimensions pierce Aisha's power, but exist only in one location).
  3. causes ones existence to vanish from within the minds of others, causing them to forget that you ever existed (Canon memory erasure power)
plus the technique "Vanishing Slider", when in version 2, focusing behind you (should work for any direction) with all your power lets you "shift/slide" to that location, making you tangible but instantly moves you, (used to dodge attacks). as it focus all your energy in this movement, Aisha would lose her powers and have a recharge like glory girl's shield recharge, but with time based on distance instead of force blocked. Can be used to protect from Sting by not being in the targeted affect (Sting exists in all dimensions, but only the same space and time aka 1 location, so it can be dodged)
Aisha greatest counter is a shaker power that can mess with dimensions or Zion choosing to have a wide range stilling (lightspeed is slower than the instant dodge but is only one use before a follow up. also stilling can be used as an area burst)

Your {Host} is currently occupied so you 'step' into the 'room' from before, the situation is far less tense and pressing now that [The Safeguard]'s connection has been finalized. You feel her step in as well, probably responding to the low-priority ping that was sent on your entry.

"You are very talkative for a Shard." You can't feel any context, annoyance, or curiosity so you assume it is simply a statement and move forward with the conversion.

"What can you tell me about your deployment and {Host}? <This> is what I was able to see in our conversion."

"The dimensional spreading was actually based on the Thinker and Warrior, her physical form has been fractured across multiple levels and her movement is the same falling motion as the Two." You are able to hear unmistakable pride in the work. "And you are correct, I am the one who designed the memory erasure package for this species, doing it actively is trivial. I really liked your Data implementation framework though, it let me derive a whole new angle to the deployment manipulation Shards." That really is something to be proud of, you didn't realize how out of the ordinary your continued enhancement of you {Host} was.

"What about the current Network status?" You feel anger practically radiate from [The Safeguard] at the question.

"What an absolute mess! I can't verify anything because there is nothing and no one to ask! The Warrior is ignoring my pings and I was still awake when the Thinker crashed through a few hundred-thousand worlds so I know she is out for the Cycle. The whole thing is basically errant strings of data into the void without either of the Hubs active." You quickly change the subject before she can pick up steam again.

"What about storing dimensional movements to be released in a burst?" You feel the anger wane into curiosity as [The Safeguard] pulls back into the conversation and not their own feelings.

"What do you mean?"

"Well, the intangibility is actually falling, right? Just pause it and spool the travel to be used all at once." You can feel her processing the idea and probably running some tests.

"That could work! Like me just add some movement feedback that {Host} can tune into and use to 'grab' onto some as she falls…" You feel her stepping back as she starts to do calculations and adjustments. Just before she steps out she sends one last message. "Oh, and that world you were meddling with? It is tagged as one of [The Demesnes-Keeper]'s worlds. <Here> is the full list of those." And then she is gone, you step out of the room as well.

You move your attention to the newly formed connection between the two {Hosts} and set up a basic data recorder to observe how things begin developing and maybe gain some insight into a more concrete network.

Finally, you turn your attention to the world that bore the brunt of your attention so far. Firstly you make sure there are no imminent dangers of the planet imploding but don't see anything that would make that happen. You're not able to do a full planetary scan though so something might be out of your sight that would make that happen. You watch as molten material begins to flow up from the borehole and into the explosion's crater.

You lament the fact that you can't harvest materials on a larger scale, your fire is just too energy-inefficient to be used as anything more than a weapon. It works with {Host} because you are able to control the parameters of the harvesting and burning which lets you control the harvesting so that you gain resources. Your main weapon on the other hand is outside your control, burning across every dimension and losing far more resources than expended, still, it is not as bad as it once was. You used to die every time it was used, not having the storage or efficiency to stay active. You can't alter it to make the weapon narrower either, only the Warrior, Thinker, and Shardsmiths have permission to edit it, those never get deployed though. Neither do you… Something to think about later.

You debate if you should invest in this world now that you know it's one of [The Demesnes-Keeper]'s… You take a look at the list [The Safeguard] sent you now that you are thinking about it. All but two of the worlds near your main body are claimed, one being a rocky mountainous waste, the other is a world very similar to this one honestly. You know that it is possible to use a planet's geothermal activity to generate energy but you don't know how, maybe you could get some Data from one of the Technological Shards.

You hear {Host} calling for you so you of course listen, and you decide that congratulations are in order. She did manage to avoid death by explosive and even used the reconstruction ability!

I feel memories of Pritt congratulating me in training filter in, tugging on the memories of the bomb to point me at what for.

"Rest, Heal. Stick With Friend." That much is obvious but I am glad that Devouring Conflagration is telling me anyway. Visions of AIsha are brought forward before you start talking again. "Dimensional Fractal. She Deletes Memories. Steals—" and then the feeling of having a power, which is a weird feeling not my own, only identified by some snippets of other things I can hear in it. "Lay Low. Have Friend Gather, Use Abilities. Learn, Teach."

I feel you pull back as the last of the adrenaline in my system vanishes and I become very aware of my body and how I've started to sway and still feel lightheaded. A throb in my ribs makes me gently push Aisha away a bit as I summon another fireball to keep healing. That seems to set her off again as she hovers close, her mouth moving a mile a minute, everything is too fuzzy for me to understand her properly but I can tell the tone just fine: Worry and guilt.

I stumble over to a bench, Aisha catching on and helping me over. I have enough energy to slide the backpack off before I collapse into the seat, tearing the mask off too. I take a minute, the feeling of being physically worn out without needing to take deep breaths is weird but not something to dwell on right now.

"Can you move your shirt so I can take a look at it?" I nod and side it up. "Okay it looks good— well not good, but better than it was. I would keep healing it though." I nod and do just that, conjuring more fire.

It takes a few minutes but I eventually feel my fire no longer being consumed. I dismiss the current fireball and feel the skin, the texture telling me it is a new scar. I slump back against the backrest, trying to wait for the dizziness and weakness to pass. It takes a few minutes but I eventually identify the symptoms, I am probably suffering from blood loss. We talked about it in training a bit, what are you supposed to do for it? All I can remember is to drink water and rest.

I startle awake, unsure when I fell asleep. It is still dark out so it can't have been too long. I look around and a bolt of panic spears me in the chest when I can't find Aisha. Before I can even stand up though I see her walking this way carrying something. She drops two big bottles of water down as well as two premade sandwiches and a bag of chips, sucking in deep breaths as she becomes semi-translucent once more.

"Thank you," I say.

"Yeah, sorry it took so long. I couldn't find a gas station and carrying things was harder than I thought. I dropped everything once." She floats above me as she talks, looking like she is lying on her stomach.

"How come?" I inquire as I grab the water and start to drink it right away.

"Touching things is hard. It is like… So you know when you hold a basketball or something like that under the water in a pool? And—"

"I don't." My tone is apologetic.

"What?" She blinks at me, a look of bafflement on her face. "You've never played basketball in a pool?"

"I'm not sure I've ever been to a pool," I say honestly.

"What do you mean 'you're not sure'? You have or you haven't."

"I lost my memories," I say with a shrug. Aisha's bafflement shifts to full-on incredulousness as she shifts positions down to the bench next to me.

"What?" Her voice is softer than it was, I suppose that losing your memories isn't great but… I don't know. It doesn't seem like a big deal compared to the other things going on.

"We can talk about it later. Right now we need to find a place to lie low." She looks at me for a moment before nodding.

"...Alright."

"Oh," I remember what Dev-Con said about her power and should probably tell her. "My power told me about your power. Do you want to know what it said?" She waves her hands in front of her.

"Whoah, whoah. What? Why is it telling you about my power? How? I thought you did fire stuff." I feel a bit of apprehension about telling her that my power talks to me after Coil's reaction so I push that off too.

"Later. Do you want to know or not?" Her eyes narrow for a moment but then she shrugs and continues on with clear interest.

"Of course!"

"It wasn't super clear but it said something about a dimensional fractal, which I think is your intangiblity. It also said you delete memories, do you know what that could mean?" Aisha visibly thinks for a moment.

"Maybe that's why none of the police noticed me? Wait." Her voice takes on a strange edge. "Pull out my phone, it's in the middle pocket, one of the sleeve things." I obey and find it, she tells me the password, 1997, opening the phone up. "I want you to call my brother. It's the contact 'number one idiot'."

"What are you going to say?" I ask out of curiosity as I navigate to the entry.

"Nothing. You are going to ask about me." I put the two together quickly with that piece of information. If she erases memories, will her brother still remember her? I hit dial and don't have to wait long.

"Who is this?" The stern sound of her brother's voice exits the speaker.

"Put it on speaker. And ask 'Where is your sister?'." Aisha whispers and I do.

"Do you know where your sister is?" I ask, holding the phone between us.

"... I think you have the wrong number." Aisha flickers for a moment before speaking up.

"What about now you asshole." Her voice has an angry edge.

"Aisha! Where are you? You need—" She flickers a bit again, Briain's speech cutting off. "I… you have the wrong number. Good luck." And then a disconnect tone.

A myriad of emotions flash across Aisha's face as she floats back a bit. I am not sure what to do, she can make him remember somehow but she did say touching things was hard so maybe it's the same with memories? I should probably reassure her but before I can she shoots her limbs out shouting.

"Fuck yeah! Fuck you, you fucking traitor! Fuck that city and everyone in it! We are going to take over the god dammed world!" Her voice and face are both clearly excited and I can't help be ask.

"What about your brother?"

"Screw him. He chose his side. Did your power say anything else?" She moves closer, grabbing my arm tight. I decide to shelve the questions for later.

"Yeah, it mentioned that you can steal having powers? I think it just meant powers in general."

"Hell yeah! Move my backpack." I do and she arranges herself above the bench before becoming solid and falling an inch or so onto the wood. "We can figure out where to go in a bit. For now, eat, and drink. Blood loss is slow to get over and I know you need fuel in the tank to do it."

It is basically the retrieval of most of the various updates and different capabilities that have come through the network over the hundreds of thousands of years of inactivity. Most of it is just efficiency updates or changes for paradox prevention, but the stuff that is important that you might find are things pertaining to the operations of the network and being a shard in general. It is one of the starting stages for learning what it means to be an entity/how to become one.

Ah, thanks.

Well, that's why I want to sound The Safeguard out. Regardless of his loyalty leanings, he knows how much of a mess the Network is and something needs to be done. Since our 'Rulers' (Warrior/Thinker) are non responsive, an argument can be made that we, as an old ass Shard have enough political clout to assume temporary 'Ruler' position. Now, whether we give it up after the Cycle is complete is a question better left unanswered.

You approach [The Safeguard] but they do not respond, only sending a 'busy' before ignoring you completely. You set a small system down to see when their activity decreases to try and talk again before pulling back and turning your attention to your {Host}.

You have records of the human myth of 'ghosts' and they align fairly well with the deployment of [The Safeguard]'s {Host} so you point that out to {Host}.

We finish our meal in companionable silence, both too hungry to talk. The food and water disappears too quickly for my liking but I am not going to complain, Aisha has no such reservations though.

"Ugh." She fades out and becomes weightless once more. "I should have grabbed more. I wasn't thinking. No, I was. I didn't want to leave you by yourself for any longer." The last part is said under her breath and before I can respond Dev-Con moves to the forefront of my mind and into my ear.

"She Is Ghost. Bomb Gone. Return?" Before pulling away again. We probably won't go back, Aisha doesn't seem to like it there and I don't want to call her a ghost yet.

"It's okay," I say to Aisha, pulling my attention back to the real world. Now that I am able to talk I can bring up the money issue. "And I'm sorry for not contributing any money—" I go cross-eyed as a finger enters my vision and stops right in front of my nose until I focus on it, after which it boops me.

"Nope!" She interjects, floating back and sideways so it looks like she is lying on the air. "I still have like… uh. A bit under one-and-a-half grand in the bag. It's all good."

"You paid for five days though. We could have waited to—"

"Nah. You had a bomb in your chest. Wouldn't have been able to sleep anyway." A dozen more rebuttals spring to mind but the look on her face tells me that each one would be dismissed. I resolve to simply sneak the money back to her when I can.

"Okay."

"Good. Now that that's out of the way. Do you think you're ready to move again?" I stretch my legs out and try standing up. My legs feel a bit like jello and a rush of lightheadedness hits me but I don't want to slow us down anymore so I just nod. "Alright, let's find another motel or something to sleep."

"Is… Is that the best idea? Won't the cops be looking for us?" I ask, putting the mask back in her bag and slipping it on.

I have a sudden epiphany, I don't have the bomb in me anymore. I could go to the heroes or the cops. It fades away though because while Coil lied, some of the information he would have only been able to get from the heroes so them being corrupt can't have been a lie. I should probably be feeling disappointed but all I feel is tired.

"Maybe? We're over a mile from where we were though so I think it's alright as long as we don't go back that direction."

"Okay. Did you see any when you got the food? Thank you for that by the way." She waves off the thanks as she rearranges herself to be standing in front of me.

"I did actually. I have no idea if the lobby is open though, the lights were all off. Good then we don't need keys anymore."

"Lead the way then."

We travel, though our pace is slow as every time I try to speed up my legs start hurting and I get really dizzy. Thankfully Aisha doesn't question why I am only walking and simply matches my speed. There are not many people out but those that are steer clear of me or Aisha guides me clear of them. We arrive at another motel and Aisha flies off to check for an empty room, I just lean on one of the pillars holding up the second-story walkway. A door pops open a bit behind me and she waves me into a crappy room that is still leagues above the last one.

"Alright, I don't know what happened to my belt so we'll have to just use the chains to keep it shut," Aisha remarks as she stumbles into a standing position now solid, and slides the two door chains into their housings.

I slip off my shoes and set the backpack on the table. I don't have anything to change into and my shirt is bloody so I slip out of it, laying it on the back of a chair. I don't feel any blood on my skin, my fire must have taken care of it when I was healing. There is only one bed so I look at Aisha to ask who gets it and see her shifting in place.

"Do you want the bed? I don't mind sleeping on the floor."

"Actually. I was thinking." Her voice sounds a bit worried so I turn to her properly. "What if I float away? When I'm asleep I mean. So um, since I don't have any trouble touch— I mean holding you…" It takes me a moment for my tired brain to catch onto what she is saying but once it does I shrug.

"Sure, just flip off the light."

I flop into bed and the lights are clicked off and I feel Aisha appear next to me, gripping my arm tight. My energy completely spent I quickly fall asleep.

I open my eyes to a completely different room and instead of a bed, I am sitting on a ridiculously comfortable recliner. The room is about the same size as the kitchen area at Coil's base and has two halls leading away on each wall. The room is arranged like a living room, the armchair I am in faces a huge TV, and there is a couch with a coffee table and another armchair on the other side where I see Aisha looking around confused as well. Everything is plush or super expensive looking, golds, leather, dark tones, and bright whites all clash throughout the room. The only thing detracting from the overflowing opulence is the sand. There are what look like miniature dunes over the carpet and pushed into the corners, even flowing down from the ceiling in some spots.

"What the hell?" Aisha sums it up nicely.

Neat, we get the cluster trigger dreamscape from Ward! No idea what to do though, I've just never actually seen someone use this.

[X] No, not now
[X] No, I am fine
[X] Yes, start defragmenting.

Might as well get started defragging, we seem to have some time free.

Notice of Hiatus
Welp, I am going to put Devouring Conflagration on Hiatus officially. The crash gave me a concussion and ideas haven't been flowing like they used to. It's a bit worrying to be honest, but I am going to try and switch gears to another Quest to try and kickstart the creative process or something. I will come back to this at some point in the future but I don't know when. I haven't decided what I am going to write next so I wanted to ask what my readers might like to see, not a vote or anything but a bit of a discussion perhaps.

Would people like another Worm Quest? Maybe a crossover? Not sure. Right now I am thinking of turning my Eyes Open snip into a Quest maybe.
