It has been one hundred years since the death of Kibutsuji Muzan, and in that time, the land has experienced many changes and upheavals. Wars have been fought, cities raised, wilderness tamed, and superstitions conquered by science and reason. With the source of all demons dead for a century, memory quickly fades, and the citizens of peaceful Japan set out into the nighttime with excitement in their hearts and decadent luxury on their minds. The lights of their shining cities have turned the darkness of night into a world of pleasure and leisure, and the advancement of modern technology and learning have rendered the once feared Oni into a tale to frighten children.

In this blissful era, the blades of the Demon Slayer Corps have grown dull. After the death of Muzan, many chose to cast aside their blades and training to pursue a life of peace. For those who could not forget the shadow of Demons, they left behind detailed manuals and training methods, praying that future generations would not need them. The organization continued to exist, maintained by the members who could not forget their struggle, and is maintained in modern times as a cultural preservation society. The art of Breathing, that powerful mastery of body and blade that made man a match for monster, is hanging on by a thread, finding few willing or capable students to inherit the lessons. Nichirin Blades are kept as heirlooms, many families hardly remembering their true purpose. The nine Pillars of the Corps, untested in battle, are scarcely a match for the newly-recruited of the past.

The Slayers grow weak. Men grow careless. And, little by little, darkness returns to torment those who have forgotten fear.

Mysterious murders, unexplained disappearances, freak accidents. Modern Japan sees its share of such things, but the rising number of incidents, and most pressingly, a half-devoured corpse, lead the Demon Slayer Corps to hold a meeting between the nine Pillars to discuss the recent happenings.

That night would go down as one of the worst in the organization's history.

Demons, the dreaded monsters of the past, declared their return. And they did so by devouring and slaughtering all who were in attendance at the night's meeting, including six of the nine Pillars. They came in a hundred different shapes and forms, boasting a hundred nightmares made manifest. After the slaughter, they retreated into the shadows, to lurk among their favored prey as they did in the past. Boldly, they denounce the Corps as feeble children, incapable of standing before their mighty Lord and his demonic followers. For the pandemonium that now encroaches upon Japan bears a name:

The Night Parade of a Hundred Demons
These are your foes, newly recruited of the Demon Slayer Corps. In these modern times, you are among the only remaining swordsmen who can call upon the strength of old - Breathing. Armed with Nichirin Steel and clad in demon slayer's garb, you must strike out into the dark night and slay the source of the demonic threat - the Lord of the Night.

Be bold, warriors. And deliver a reminder to your hated foes - that though man may fear demons, Demons fear Slayers.

===============================================================================================================================
Welcome to Hyakki Yagyō - or Night Parade, because I'm not gonna keep calling it that outside of the thread title! In this game, contrary to all that cheesey fluff I typed out above, you will play as either one of the Demon Slayers or a Demon. For Demon Slayers, you'll be faced with the dangerous task of tracking down and eliminating the Lord of the Night, the new source of demons. For Demons, your goals are more personal - perhaps you're out for power, devouring demons in the hopes of ascending to the top of Tokyo's new food chain. Maybe you're on a quest to resist your monstrous impulses and restore your lost humanity. Regardless, I'll be welcoming submissions for either side for the next week!

But first, the usual ground rules:

  1. No godmodding! We're playing this freeform style, so its important that no one abuse that freedom by going around acting like a jerk!
  2. Be nice! We're all here to have fun, and part of that is avoiding any abrasive or condescending behavior!
  3. Follow site rules! Don't make the mods lock us up!
  4. If you aren't feeling the game anymore and wanna bow out, that's fine! But give me a heads up first so I can work out how to handle it!
  5. Demon Slayers post their sheets in the OOC thread, but Demons should PM their sheets to me. It's a dangerous world for lone demons, so you need to keep some cards up your sleeves. By contrast, slayers should be aware of each other anyway, so be open and public! You can send me a sheet in PMs, but for Slayers, you'll only be considered a candidate when you have a public sheet posted here!
  6. Keep your writing clean, folks - as you've no doubt noticed, my writing ain't gonna earn any awards, but you can read it! Mostly! Make sure your writing is understandable!
  7. Don't let me catch you cheating! Make a nuisance of yourself too often and you'll get the boot!
Basic stuff, right? Now let's get into the nitty gritty - character generation.

Demon Slayers:

The overall strength of the Slayers is about equivalent to Tanjiro just after passing his trials - and you guys are considered the cream of the crop as far as recruits go! Some of you may end up holding a higher rank than your experience would suggest - the fact of the matter is, you're among the only ones in the Corps even capable of using Full Focus Breathing.
Name:
Age:
Gender:
Appearance:
Breath: (The Breath Style your character uses. It can be one of the canon breaths, or a derivative breath of your own design!)
Nichirin Blade: (List the style and color! If you just use a normal sword, feel free to just list the color, I barely know anything about japanese swords anyway! The color is usually tied to your breath or character somehow. Modern times have made traditions go crazy, so even though they're 'blades' you can still choose to wield a different style of melee weapon such as a spear, axe, spiked ball, gauntlets...if you can use your Breath with it, its acceptable!)
Background: (Who your guy is, and why they're here fighting demons with swords!)
Breath Stances: (Your sword techniques. For those learning one of the canon breaths, use your canon stances! Original creations have their work cut out for them though. Max of ten techniques here!)
Special: (Special details about your character! Maybe you have an enhanced sense, like Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke! Maybe you eat demons for powerups!)

Demons:

Some special details here! Don't worry about averting your eyes, Demon Slayers, this is all information your organization has pieced together as well.

Demons in this game have a crucial difference from the series - they do not consist solely of Oni. Other demons and spirits from Japanese folklore and mythology have arisen, from Snow Women to Ume-bozu to Kappa and so on. They boast new powers and different weaknesses - some will be a true test of wits and adaptability. However, it is known that they are all former humans, much like the Oni of ages past. From what the organization has learned from stragglers and independent demons, people have been transformed by a mysterious figure known only as Nurarihiyon. It is believed that he is the same figure referred to as the Lord of the Night.

What this means for Demon submissions is that you have to have a human history, and you don't have to be an Oni - but you do have to be based in Japanese folklore. Can't just make something original here.

Also, all Demons keep the weakness to sunlight! Even the new species can only act during the night.

Name:
Age:
Gender:
Appearance:
Demonic Species: (What kind of demon you are! If you aren't an Oni, you should also go into detail as to your kind's abilities and weaknesses)
Background: (Same as for Slayers, with one key difference - this is your life before being turned into a demon. It must end on meeting Nurarihiyon in some circumstance - either saving you, or cursing you, with demonic power.)
Demonic Art: (Your unique power as a demon. For Oni, they're called Blood Demon Arts, while for other Demons they may be named differently. A Snow Woman may have Ice Demon Arts, or a Kappa Water Demon Arts, for example.)

I am certain that I'm forgetting something I should be mentioning here, but don't worry! I'm up for answering any questions you may have either here in the thread or in PMs. I would state a player cap, but I've been notoriously bad at keeping those in the past, so lets just say there is a very soft limit of nine players and I will probably allow more if there are some really cool submissions. Have fun everyone!

Not sure if we can post yet so just let me know if I should delete this, though I'm interested to say the least.

Is it fine to apply if a player hasn't watched the series? Will your lore dump suffice, or should we do some homework? :V

Posting's fine, go ahead!

I'd say you're mostly fine, given this is set long after the series and deals with a bunch of stuff I made up rather than stuff from canon. But doing a little reading or watching some episodes is probably still a good idea to get a handle on what your submission can do and what kind of techniques you can make up.

Fifth Form: Hot Rod Jab
Sixth Form: Eight Cylinder Chained Cuts

He has written thousands of thousands of words on analyzing anime. He has spent five hundred dollars on assorted merchandise. He also fukkin' lifts and probably eats nothing but protein powder for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In an act of tremendous weebery, he opted into studying abroad in Tokyo University. Normally, this would have given him at best, a supporting role in a romantic comedy manga as the stock comedic foreigner.

Then Edward found some creep molesting a girl. Common decency raring, he hauled the creep off of her and punched him. Unfortunatly, the creep was a demon and the girl was dead, like wow, you wouldn't think a body would have that much blood. Edward punched and punched and punched and would have gotten himself implicated in a double murder if it wasn't for a passing demon slayer who offered to induct him into the Demon Slayer corps. He accepted, of course.

Special: Big and Large

god will judge me and find me innocent

More seriously I'm not sure if this is the sheet I want. It's too memey for my tastes I feel.

It's too much meme for me, but it did get a laugh. I unironically like 250 Mile Death Sprint as a technique name though.

Well, I'm supposed to put this one in public so here it is.

Name: Igarashi Miyu
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Appearance:
Breath: Breath of the Deep Sea, a custom variant of the Breath of Water. A two-sword style she created as a replacement for the Breath of Water she couldn't replicate, based around a cycle of breathing where the user alternates between an extended period of holding their breath to stimulate their body's panic, their self-preservation instincts resulting in increased power and reaction times while causing notable stress on their system, and another period of deep breathing used to regulate and adjust the strain and recover between active moments.

Nichirin Blade: A paired katana and wakizashi set, passed down from antiquity through the family that has come to be known as the Igarashi. In Miyu's hands, the blades exhibit a unique layered coloration, the edges a blue that verges on black, lightening to turquoise in the middle, up to a light blue in waves along the back. Close to the circular guards of both blades, 'Annihilate Demons' is emblazoned in stark white.

Background:
The daughter of a family that was once associated with the Demon Slayer Corps and who practiced the Breath of Water. While the dojo they used to train remained in their possession, the circumstances of the changing years lead to the decline of the proper art among them. The social pressures against the possession of swords and the lack of need to slay demons meant that by Miyu's time, old records and training manuals- some in rather poor condition- were all that remained of their heritage.

Still, they hadn't completely rotted. Miyu was raised in a strict environment with a harsh training regimen, honing her skills in swordplay despite it being reduced to mere sport. It wasn't enough. Rumors of strange creatures became disappearing classmates, and Miyu eventually found herself confronting a monster.

She couldn't keep up. She was completely outmatched by something that was beyond human. Luck and circumstance allowed her to escape, and faint recollections of the tales her family had passed down led her to searching through the old records in the attic.

The Breath of Water. A special technique that increased the user's strength and allowed men to fight like Demons. She poured over the tomes, did everything she could, but it was no use. She couldn't recreate it.

It was then she remembered. It had happened once, in the past. An accident while she was out at the sea with her family. The time she almost drowned, the feeling of the air leaving her lungs, the heart-rending panic that set in. So similar to the desperation she felt while confronting that monster.

With a new idea in mind, she set about creating her own unique Breath, based on what she could salvage of the Breath of Water, but tailored to her own particular needs and constitution.

In time, she managed it. And soon she had fought a monster and won.

Soon she was a 'Demon Slayer'.

Breath Forms:
Two Stances with different forms, split 2 and 4 for a total of 6.
Surface Stance is the defensive, recuperatory stance.
Surface Stance, First Form: Breach
-Begins to breathe and recuperate. The efficient breathing speeds recovery but doesn't do much to strengthen and has no associated attack or movement.
Surface Stance, Second Form: Rolling Waves
-A defensive maneuver with both swords slashing horizontally in front one after the other while the user backpedals, meant to create distance and discourage pursuit to allow more time for recovery and entering the Submerged Stance.

Submerged Stance is the offensive, self-damaging stance.
Submerged Stance, First Form: Dive
-The breath is held and the heart begins to pound. The First Form is a thrust with either one or both blades, typically oriented downward and leveraging her weight to add more force behind her still-not-fully-enhanced blows.
Submerged Stance, Second Form: Crushing Depths
-There is a pressure and pounding in the ears. Vertical slices using both swords simultaneously, her body beginning to draw out its reserves of strength to overwhelm with brute force.
Submerged Stance, Third Form: Fading Light
-Vision begins to blur, chest tightens. A series of slashes made with a desperate speed and uneven cadence, making them harder to predict and counter.
Submerged Stance, Fourth Form: Sightless Ripples
-The world is dark and her consciousness begins to blur. Her mind begins to race and her body struggles to keep up. While nearly blind, her body picks up on faint sounds and pressure changes to inform her of incoming attacks and responds with extreme speed and precision to counter and remove the danger.

Special: In all likelihood, Miyu bears an unusual constitution. Setting aside her self-taught attempts, even once she was officially inducted into the Demon Slayers' organization she has never managed to perform proper Full Focus Breathing. Meanwhile, her own style seems ludicrous to others who might dare to try it- how is this level of skill possible to attain whilst blacking out?

Ah crap, I knew I forgot something!

All Demons keep the Oni's weakness to sunlight, regardless of species. They can not operate during the day. I'll be editing that into the OP, sorry everybody.

When you mean operate during the day, does that mean they can't touch sunlight, or can't move effectively during the day period?

Would wearing thick cloathing and having exposed bits like face covered in best suncream/temporary bronzer/body paint work as a workaround against sunlight destruction (as long as demons aren't required to fight, that is, since any cut or damage is going to uncover skin to the sunlight)?

It appears that only direct sunlight is harmful, as in the first episode of the series (I am on the second episode right now, and hooked so far) Nezuku wasn't harmed by the sunlight since it was a cloudy day, so light that is even just partially blocked or scattered probably shouldn't be an instant death sentence.

Not to spoil anything, but Nezuko is an exception to the rule.

I'm inclined to say 'sure'. Thick clothing and coverings over the body will allow demons to move about in the daytime. But it's still very risky, and many of the new demons will have obvious tells and signs of their monstrous nature. Don't get too cocky and start thinking you can fight a guy at high noon, basically :V

The cloud cover thing was before that, so it applies. But it's the middle of summer, so Japan is currently not a very friendly climate zone for Demons in any case.

Well, that first Demon Slayer didn't appear to be surprised that a demon could survive on a cloudy day, even being the one to state that this was the reason for his survival, so I assume that most demons have to have at least a degree of resistance to scattered or partially blocked sunlight, so I still see a sunscream/bronzer combo and thick clothing a possibility.

Especially since even if this technique is successful demons remain insanely vulnerable, as should any slayer decide to attack them during daylight even a single grazing hit turns into a serious wound, so it is not like this would allow demons to completely ignore their-

Just as I expected! Wonderful! If everything goes well I might have a sheet done for tomorrow.

Divider, when will you reveal the surprise Yakuza crossover?

Name: Akira Hoshino
Age: 18
Gender: Female

Breath: Breath of the Star - Distantly related to the Breath of Stone, this Breath style focuses on constantly shifting the flow of power between the leg muscles and arm muscles to swiftly dart across the battlefield while still maintaining attack power. There is a strong emphasis on precise footwork and training the key upper muscles for more powerful strikes.

Nichirin Blade: A pair of katars with orange fiery patterns coming from the tips. These were made recently, as her brother is using the ones passed down in the family. The words 'Annihilate Demons' are engraved stark white in the middle of each blade.

Background:
The Hoshino family isn't particularly a remarkable one. They were just like any other normal Japanese family. A hardworking father who worked as a civil servant. A terrifying mother who took care of the house. A blockhead of a son who worked as a personal fitness trainer. And a spoiled brat of a daughter who refuses to take any of her studies seriously. Especially her training.

It was a bother, she said. Useless in the modern era, she protested. Utterly archaic, she pointed out. There was no point without any demons around anymore, she reasoned.

Unfortunately for her, this was the one thing her mother refused to relinquish on. Her mother refused to let an ancient art die out just because there was no need for it in modern times. Thus, Akira was terrorized by her mother on top of being forced to study for those terrible, dreadful exams.

Honestly, how could anyone keep up with this? Being whacked at while meditating if she couldn't Breathe properly. Forced to run around the neighborhood while carrying training weights. Going to the gym with her own mom and being watched like a hawk by her. That was so embarrassing.

At least her brother understood her pain. Even if he actually enjoyed the dumb training routine.

On the bright side, her mother only expected for her to learn the stances and forms. She really didn't expect anything out of it besides that. So it came as a shock when a bunch of demons suddenly showed up out of nowhere and slaughtered everyone on that fateful night.

Her mother attended that meeting, and she never came back home.

On that day forward, Akira threw herself into training. Just for the chance to gut that Lord of the Night bastard herself.
Breath Forms:
Breath of the Star, First Form: Flickering Light
- Fast and precise footwork to confuse and surround the enemy. All the while dealing weak slashes to weaken them.
Breath of the Star, Second Form: Black Hole
- Taking advantage of the enemy's momentum, Akira redirects the trajectory of the attack with a katar and then delivers a swift counterattack with the other katar.
Breath of the Star, Third Form: Meteor Stream
- Using her toes as leverage, Akira sprints forward at ludicrous speed and delivers a straight jab.
Breath of the Star, Fourth Form: Luminous Shine
- A series of spinning attack that ends with a simultaneous slash from both of her katars in a horizontal cross.
Breath of the Star, Fifth Form: Platinum Stardusts
- A flurry of uninterrupted blows, Akira keeps up the pressure by going all out on her attacks. An unadulterated barrage of jabs from her Nichirin katars.
Breath of the Star, Sixth Form: Streaking Asteroids
- Delivering a jumping attack aimed to sever the limbs, the katars slice down vertically.
Breath of the Star, Seventh Form: Celestial Reversal
- Akira waits for the enemy's attack at the last moment and dodges with a quick sidestep. Momentarily fooling the enemy into thinking their attack connected, and then taking advantage of this opening to deliver a counterattack.
Breath of the Star, Eighth Form: Meteor Burst
- Coiling her arm muscles to their limits, Akira charges up a devastating blow to finish off her enemy. Fast as a speeding bullet, the air pressure increases the reach of the attack. One powerful jab to end the fight.
Special: Springy Muscles
Akira's body possesses a unique constitution. Her muscles are very springy. They can compressed four times the norm, and deliver much more explosiveness as a result of the pent up energy. Because of this, Akira eats through 3 meals worth of food per serving.

I love the way Kimetsu no Yaiba works, so count me in. I tried to stick closely to the Breath of Thunder and Breath of Water styles when making the Breath of Lightning. Also, I hadn't planned it when I started writing the character, but then I realised I was making a Kakashi rip-off to a certain extent, so I embraced it a bit.

Name: Inazuma Shirogane (Shiro)
(Given name Platinum (Shirogane), Family name Lightning [bolt] (Inazuma))

Age: 14
(Tanjiro was 13 in Chapter 1)

Gender: Male

Appearance: Platinum blonde hair, blue eyes, Japanese features but average Caucasian height for his age.
I wasn't planning on it, but fuck it: young Kakashi is a go!

Breath: Breath of Lightning (Breath of Thunder derivative)

Nichirin Blade: Platinum/Silver Chokuto, "White Fang"
A rod that looks like a bo staff is strapped to Shiro's back. During combat, Shiro can unstrap it and attach his White Fang to the end of the rod, where its function is revealed. Working like a dynamo, the rod is a battery that charges as Shiro moves, and upon reaching a large enough charge can be unleashed to electrify the blade or even summon lightning. The rod's charge is depleted quickly, although extreme movement will still charge the rod while in use. This electrification enhances all styles of the Breath of Lightning while also increasing the physical reach of the weapon, at the cost of some speed due to the length.

Background: As the third child and second son of the Inazuma family, it was a surprise in the new age when young Shiro took an interest in learning their mother's Demon Slaying techniques. Having begun his training at a young age, he revels in the ability to channel his breath into lightning-fast movements, crossing arenas in the blink of an eye. The Inazuma family (name taken on from the mother, rather than the father) is particularly suited to wielding the Breath of Lightning, a descendant of the Breath of Thunder, due to their enhanced perception. While using their Breath techniques, an Inazuma's mind is strengthened as their body is, allowing them to perceive the world as though everything around them is moving through molasses. Once he had mastered the basics of his mother's teachings, he was sent to hone his art and make his mother proud.

Breath Stances:
Breath of Lightning - A Breath Stance that invokes and channels lightning through a straight blade, emphasising speed and power. Techniques often start with the blade sheathed and use the drawing to add more speed to the movement, sometimes slashing and sheathing the blade before it can even be registered.
First Style: Lightning Strike - The user dashes forward and slashes at their opponent with lightning speed.
-First Style: Second Form: Lightning Strikes Twice - The user chains together multiple Lightning Strikes into a single movement.
Second Style: Thunder Ring - The user twists and cleaves everything in a ring around them with blazing thunder.
Third Style: Storm Lightning - The user stabs their sword like a dozen strikes of lightning in a single moment.
Fourth Style: Lightning Bolt - The user concentrates their strength into a single strike, unleashing it as a thrust that forces the air itself to damage the target.
-Fourth Style: Second Form: Lightning Branches - The user spreads the force of the Lightning Bolt into a single slash that slices into enemies at a distance.
Fifth Style: Thunderous Roar- The user releases their breath in an earth-quaking roar while bringing their blade around in a slash that breaks the air in front of them, shattering stone on contact and creating a powerful wind that blasts away from their body.
Sixth Style: Lighting Shower - The user flicks their sword multiple times, creating small bursts of air that can damage targets at range from multiple directions.
Seventh Style: Flying Thunder God - The user channels lightning through their body to emit an aura of electricity, shocking everything nearby and enhancing their speed to move as a true lightning bolt and step on the air itself.

Special: Enhanced Perception! While focusing on his Breathing (as when using a Breath Stance), his perception speed is increased to match the speed that he moves at - that of a lightning bolt, and allows him to count the individual flaps of a hummingbird's wings (about 100x faster than a normal person's perception, hummingbirds flap their wings up to 70 times per second!). When not in combat and simply maintaining correct passive breathing posture, he can think and react up to ten times faster than an untrained person.
