DECAYING PREFECTURES - A STATE OF DECAY/OREGAIRU QUEST

Chapter 5 - 2 Settling down, part 2
Shizuka decided to help the teens with physical training. Though Yumiko had a solid idea of what she's doing as a former Prefectural Tennis champion, she's still blind about what it means to fight.

"That's where I came for." Shizuka waved the notes Yumiko made before giving them to the owner. "Miura's guidebook is actually good if you want to increase agility and general fitness. I'm here to teach you how to translate that into attack power and life or death survival."

"First of all, what are a female's biggest weakness? Upper body strength?" Shizuka scoffed. "No, it is the pelvic bones. Based on the research and records in the military, women are twice as likely to get hip injuries, if not more, compared to men."

"Sensei," Saika whined. "I'm a boy, though."

"Sure you are, but you also have a triangle figure. You look like a girl and over 5 kilograms heavier somehow. This training will be useful for your body form. If you follow my training plan, you can kick a lot of ass and keep up with the boys."

"Ah, understandable." Saika nodded.

Indeed. Saika is a relatively short, slender, and effeminate boy with narrow shoulders and wide hips. Fully clothed, it is easy to mistake him for a tomboyish, albeit shy girl.

Better to train Saika as if he were a girl due to his unique anatomy. However, he will still obtain a better strength-to-weight ratio than them.

"Be honest, though. You girls have different motives about the training, right?"

"To be honest, we're wondering how we developed a massive appetite as of recently. Even when we were sick." Hina bluntly told Shizuka. "We don't eat much less than the boys, and if we have to gain weight, we might as well turn it into muscle."

Yumiko slapped her own face in embarrassment. But it wasn't like she denied it.

"True," Shizuka said. "At your age, there's almost an 800-calorie gap between boys and girls. But this gap shrunk in just three days. That's because our metabolism is accelerated in response to the virus."

"Kawasaki also noticed how our body is getting stronger. In contrast, the appetite among the boys hasn't really increased much, right?" Shizuka pointed. "It's because they're refining their optimized body, but it's a chance for us to start narrowing the gap."

"Now, lie on the damn mattress, knee folded! Hip thrust upward, fifteen times a set!" Shizuka ordered as she showed an example. "Four sets! Slow but steady!"

The three teens looked embarrassed, but they persevered.

After that, they did standing exercises, prone, sideways leaning, leg folding, side stepping, and squats.

Each of them were the same. Fifteen times a set, four sets per exercise.

"Alright. Breakfast now!" Shizuka pointed to the sky. "After breakfast, we'll have a combat 101 while you digest your food. Then we get into practicals."

True to how the girls realized it. Everyone ate. A lot. Even that thin-ass girl Yukinoshita Yukino. She's as tall as Shizuka but probably somewhere ten kilograms lighter. If she eats like this, that's not going to stay long.

"...Do you like cat food that much?" Yumiko winced. "Just because it's about cats?"

"Other than needing more salt and spice, it is fine," Yukino calmly said as she spooned the tuna from the can after she sprinkled salt and pepper. "Can't exactly whine about branding when you risk malnutrition."

"Look, canned food is fine. But if we start eating dry kibbles, I'd sew a straight jacket for myself." Hina smiled with a scary face, clearly not enjoying it as much as Yukino did.

Yumiko stuck her tongue in disgust. "I'm sorry."

Indeed, because they're still recovering, they have the luxury of eating cat food. Most didn't like it, but they had to bear with it. At least they can eat rice and vegetables to go with them.

At least Komachi promised that by lunch, they would eat cooked meat. And yes, even a cat meal can be cooked and seasoned into a palatable dish. This would be the last time they eat straight out of the can!

"How's the training?" Hayato asked. "Anything feels lacking?"

"We barely began. But thankfully, Sensei will help." Yumiko told him.

"I wish we could join. But the weapons aren't going to build themselves. We had to finish it before noon." Tobe said. "Hayato is more skillful than I am in creating things. I'm mostly there to help him get familiar with the power tools."

"Take your time. Burnout is not good for anyone." Shizuka said. "You can join the explanation class and skip the practicals."

"Let us do just that."

...

"I think by this point, everyone understands the attributes of zombies. They have poor eyesight, poor hearing, and their coordination are asses. However, they're a little slower than living humans, have infinite stamina, and have strong pain tolerance. That is if they feel pain at all."

"Grievous injuries that would stop any humans can't stop them. Only significant neck and head injuries permanently send them to the grave. However, that doesn't mean that you can ignore their limbs."

"A zombie with a broken arm is a zombie that can't claw or punch you. A zombie with broken legs is limping and can't leap to jump on you. Just because they don't feel pain doesn't mean they're indestructible. If you can't target their head or neck, slam their elbows, hips or knees."

"However, for now, we had to talk with the most dangerous type of zombie yet: a fit adult male. This type of zombie gives me trouble, and Hayama probably understood this the most." Shizuka explained. "The combination of their body mass and strength means they could easily tackle most of you to the ground."

"This is where you had to forget about blocking. You only have two options: to dodge their tackle or bash their face aside." Shizuka slammed the explanation board. "Unless you mastered knee strikes like Tobe or Kawasaki, you can forget trying to block them."

"Always make sure you have solid footing on the ground. Have your feet spread slightly, your center of gravity lowered, and your arms ready to take action. As you realize, this is the most basic martial arts stance. You will use this a lot."

Since all the Second-year students already have elective classes, they are familiar with the basics of Judo or Kendo. Either way, they did not start from scratch. Shizuka only needs to iron out the flaws.

"So this is why Sensei trains us in squats and side-stepping." Hina realized.

"I think I realized my mistakes now," Hayato mumbled. "I need to stop thinking about wrestling the zombies, no matter how strong I am."

"Right." Shizuka nodded. "Hayama took a lot of zombies on his first fight, but he got hurt a lot because he only thought about taking them down. Be more concerned with your own body and surroundings."

"I get it, Sensei!" Hayato nodded.

Hayama Hayato
Fighting: 5 -> 6

"And thirdly... no matter how strong, skilled, or calculating you are, you're bound to be hurt." Shizuka's face turned grave as she removed her favorite lab coat and revealed her bruised and bandaged arms. "Never flinch, never panic. When you get bitten, find any way to save yourself by hitting them as fast and hard as possible."

"There's no place for tears on the battlefield." Shizuka sighed. "You can cry or whine after you finish. You can do anything after you survive the ordeal. But we're a small community, so there will be times when everyone has to fight. That's something even Hikigaya's little sister realizes."

"Alright. No more doom and gloom. We're going to practicals now!" Shizuka pulled a ball out of nowhere. "We're playing dodgeball!"

"Eh?" The teens blinked.

Much to their surprise, the training was trickier than they thought. When Shizuka said dodgeball, she was simulating zombie tackle. They couldn't afford to catch the ball.

The training was so intense the teens ended up bruised and tired by the end of the session.

"Do a cooldown stretching, hydrate with a sports drink, take some painkiller, and then we're ready for some real zombie action." Shizuka punches her palm. "Chop-chop!"

"Wha? We're going to fight for real?!" Saika gawked.

"Sensei!" Hayato was so shocked he stood up in protest.

"I don't tolerate sheep behavior. No bravado and no dragging others down. Either you're ready, or you're not. Make a decision for yourself, not other people in your group. This is individual training." Shizuka told them.

"I'm going." Yumiko stood up. "I'm tired of waiting."

"Me too." Saika also stood up. "Even Hachiman and Komachi-chan are fighting. I could not stand still."

"I just want to protect myself." Hina also stood up.

"Then I'll also-" Hayato was about to force his way in, but Tobe stopped him. "Tobe!"

"You and I know more than anyone else," Tobe told him. "Sensei won't send them into an unwinnable fight as a training. And she will watch over them."

Hayato clenched his teeth.

"Hayato," Yumiko told him. "Please be careful, and don't hurt yourself working."

"Yeah." Hayato weakly nodded. "Come back safely."

Unexpectedly, Yukino stood up and put her scabbard on.

With a lengthened handle covered in paracord, the big knife can now rightfully be mistaken as a broad saber.

"...And where are you going, Yukinoshita?"

"I'm just going to watch, Sensei." Yukino smiled brightly. "I won't interfere, but you don't need to protect me, either."

Shizuka honestly doubts that.

"Stick around. I'll spank you if you cause trouble with your weak body." Shizuka said. "Let's go."

The group walked beside the road toward their original camp... no, they did not stop there. Instead, they continued walking by the roadside until they reached the abandoned ski resort.

"By my calculation, there are ten to twelve zombies here," Shizuka said. "Half of them are elderly, but the other half is uncertain. Either way, remember your lesson. If you freeze, you will die."

Shizuka remembered the car position, which hadn't changed at all. She kicked the high-risk car to make sure the alarm was triggered. A faint scream and growls filled the air, followed by glass breaking. Terror crept into the spine of the teens, but they followed their lesson and readier their stance, weapons in hand.

"Spread a bit, and pay attention to my lead." Shizuka walked forward and then swung her fist in a picture-perfect cross-punch. Though she did not have an armored glove, the working gloves gave her much-needed protection against abrasion.

And her fist met the fastest zombie's face, stopping its charge in mid-air. The impact threw both the zombie and Shizuka backward.

"That hurts, but not as much as it could." Shizuka grinned as she landed on her feet. She swung her fist left and right to deflect the charge of two other zombies, making them stumble.

She wasn't supposed to join. But she wanted to show the teens the best way to deal with zombie tackle.

For this reason, she avoided fatal hits.

"Your turn!" Shizuka retreated, leaving the flabbergasted teens to tighten their grip on their weapons.

As soon as one zombie recovered and was about to leap again, Yumiko's crowbar smashed its teeth and broke its jaw. It wasn't a fatal hit, but fewer teeth and a weakened jaw means less dangerous bites.

Saika dodged his first opponent and smacked it on the knee, causing the zombie to stumble. However, Saika didn't commit enough, and the zombie shrugged off a partially broken bone.

When the zombie leaped at Saika, he used his hammer's handle to prevent bites and shoved it away.

Hina failed to defeat her first opponent, and both fell. By sheer coincidence, though, the sharp tip of her weapon stabbed through the zombie's chest, momentarily stunned it.

She used the lever principle to push it aside and then pulled her weapon, only to stab through the throat and push down with her entire body weight.

Hina's weapon is called a gold lever. English speakers called it a hop bar or spud bar. It was a solid iron bar with a pointed tip on one end and a chisel on the other, used for ground and woodworking.

Saika delivered three hits to the zombie, mangled the skull, and took it down. The framing hammer is an efficient bludgeoning weapon, but it requires accuracy that Saika did not have yet.

In contrast, Yumiko effectively used her crowbar and took her second opponent with less effort than they needed to take one.

"Good work on your first fray," Shizuka said as she held a zombie in a chokehold. The living dead flailed helplessly, without fear, yet unable to muster resistance. "Who's up to take this one?"

Yukino calmly stepped as she pulled her knife from the sheath. The curved cleaver-like blade was no longer awkward with the lengthened handle.

"Are you sure?"

"I have to test whether the knife is reliable. If not, I will have to reprofile it." Yukino said. "Please, Sensei."

Shizuka had doubts but decided to release and push the zombie in her direction. Saika was aghast while Yumiko and Hina covered their mouth. They were afraid that Yukino pushed her boundaries too hard.

Only for a zombie head to fly, with the body sliding on the ground, lifeless.

This crazy girl. Shizuka thought. Even she felt frightened.

"Ah." Yukino inspected the blade as she wiped the blood with a rag. "Only sharp enough to defeat one zombie. It really needs to be quenched and tempered."

"Are you insane?! A single stroke to cut their neck, and you're unsatisfied?!" Yumiko screamed.

"As far as I know, fighting just a zombie is a luxury." Yukino eerily smiled. "Is that not right, Sensei."

"True. But with your skill, you might just kill a zombie with a plastic knife." Shizuka snarked. "Don't get too humble and get on everyone's nerves."

Joke aside, even Shizuka would not be confident taking on Yukino unarmed. No, even if Shizuka had a weapon, she would gamble her life facing this tall and slim princess.

"Well, hate to admit, but you might be the strongest among us," Yumiko told Yukino, clearly annoyed. "But don't push yourself too hard. Your body is still recovering."

"Thank you for the concern, Miura-san."

The second wave of the zombies was lackluster. Most were aged, and if anything, this made the teens feel emotional damage.

Kougen Chibamura Ski Resort - Infestation cleaned up

"Let's sort their body and pray for them," Shizuka ordered. "Let us never forget that they were not born monsters. They were human and deserve a dignified death."

Everyone prayed toward the rows of dead bodies put beside the road.

"Does anyone get bit or scratched? We need to use antiseptic to clean our wounds. If not, take another painkiller before or after dinner."

"Just a few drops of iodine is good." Saika scratched his chin.

Thankfully, other than a few bruises and scrapes, the teens did not suffer any wounds.

The police group came with Dr. Masako to check everyone for the final time. Yukinoshita Yukino was cleared as healthy, although her body still hadn't fully adjusted.

"Do not stop taking antibiotics yet." Dr. Masako told everyone. "God knows no one else had the luxury."

"Right."

"Sensei!" Tobe waved his hand. "The transaction is done!"

"Coming!" Shizuka bowed at Dr. Masako and approached Tobe and the police. "So, what did you get in exchange for the weapons?"

"Information." Tobe winked.

"Good job." Shizuka pointed a thumb.

"We planned to increase shelter defense and hauling materials from the nearest lumberyard and factory this morning. If you're lucky, you might find some leftover materials there."

"Hmm, materials would be useful, but...what about zombies?"

"Significantly thinned out for now, but we don't know how tomorrow would be. Zombies formed hordes and started moving in large groups. It is a huge concern for us." The police sighed. "I am glad that Hayama-kun and Tobe-kun are being helpful."

Tobe and Hayato crafted various weapons for the police, including a longer steel pipe with foam filler, a shorter baton and tonfa with resin filler for weight, and even a mace with nuts and bolts for the head.

That is a lot of blunt force!

"I think I'm more confident now," Hayato said. "It'll take a lot of practice and study to make anything complex, but if it's a simple item, I could make them."

"As for Sensei, we could only find this." The police gave Shizuka a set of semi-worn black gloves. "We found this in a lost and found locker, and no one had been claiming it. We figure you could use this."

Okay, now that is an epic gift. While these old-school gloves don't have armor, they are still comfortable and somewhat protective. An improvement over simple work gloves.

"Thank you, officer. I will treasure this." Shizuka slightly bowed.

"As for boots, we could not help with that. But if you want a better shoe, here's the address of the local shoe manufacturer."

Honestly, some of the girls are running around with sandals. Any shoe would be an improvement!

"Also, we found this in a resort somewhere. Left behind by a tourist. Our citizens are afraid to use this, and Dr. Shimada said we might as well give it to you."

"Oh, Advil?" Shizuka grinned. "You are too generous, officer. Thank you, as well, doctor."

Resources gained:
1 bottle of Advil (Medication, 120) - American brand Ibuprofen, 360 tablets. Such a big package is not sold in Japan as an OTC drug.
1 bottle of antiseptic (Medication, 100) - 10% povidone-iodine solution, great for cleaning wounds.

It is strange for Japanese doctors to be so lenient with pain medication, even if it is OTC. Based entirely on Shizuka's experience, doctors are so stingy about them. Plus, the concept of "Gaman" - a Buddhist philosophy of enduring the unbearable which therefore discourages the use of painkillers in general.

"If you have significant injuries or illness, contact me again." Dr. Masako said. "I am not handing out the stronger stuff without you needing one."

Well, that was expected.

"We might ask for help sometimes in the future. And if you need help, feel free to come to us." The police group friendlily bowed before they left with their car.

"Getting on the good side with local authorities is advantageous." Shizuka made an OK sign on the teens. "Just make sure to consider the risks.

DAY 3 - TURN 2

Resources gained:
Ripe tomatoes (Fiber, 10)
Green vegetables (Fiber, 10)
Ripe potato (Carbs, 10)
Garlic and onions (Luxury, 10)

"Good job, Taishi." Saki congratulated her hard-working little brother. "And Hikigaya's little sister, too."

Komachi saluted. "Thank Taishi-kun for his Boy Scout training."

"We're lucky the farm nearby is harvesting time. We can prolong their life as long as there's enough water." Taishi explained. "Replanting is an issue, but I don't think we can afford to worry about that."

Unlike in survival games, farming is about the most tedious and unrewarding job one can do to survive. That's why they respect real farmers even more.

"Do we really need the materials? What if you get into a dangerous fight like yesterday?" Yumiko questioned.

"I was thinking about that, too, but chances are tomorrow it will be more dangerous to go there," Hayato argued. "At least, if we go today, some of the zombies are cleaned by the shelter volunteers."

"Hmm. Can't say I see holes in that argument. I'm still worried, though." Yumiko said.

"We're still afraid to go out alone that far. If Sensei disagrees, then we're not doing it." Tobe shrugged. "Stealing a truck is one thing. Taking it into a road full of zombies by myself? No way."

"I'm out," Hachiman said. "I'm just going to help make tomato juice because I hate sliced tomatoes."

"Preserving vegetables as smoothies might seem silly, but it is the best way to keep them edible for a long time in the fridges." Saki nodded. "It's fresh to 14 days and edible up to 28 days. Just in case we don't have fresh veggies in upcoming weeks."

"Komachi will cook the minced meat. It won't be as delicious. But it can last for months when preserved." Komachi said.

"So that's why you insist on getting literal buckets of preservatives." Shizuka nodded. "Alright. Sounds like a good plan."

"We'll scout the area nearby to see if they're safe," Hina said. "Since the police said the hordes could move unpredictably, at least we had to gauge how close they are."

"Careful, Hina," Yumiko told her. "Don't try to fight when you can avoid it."

"I'll join you, Ebina-san." Saika said.

"I'll also be there," Zaimokuza said. "I'll be the shield that protects everyone."

"Right."

Shizuka had to decide what to do now.

Chapter 6 -1 Unsettling atmosphere, part 1
"Alright. We're raiding the factories as soon as we can." Shizuka said. "Other than Tobe, I need volunteers. Preferably someone with good fighting ability and a fit body. Aside from killing, we also need someone good at lifting."

"Unfortunately, that disqualifies me," Yukino said. "I don't want to be a burden."

"Alright then. I will join." Zaimokuza decided. "I might be slower than most, but I can carry twice as much!"

"I'll also go," Yumiko said. "Hayato, you're going to finish the improved water filter, right?"

"...Yes. With power tools, I should be able to do it myself." Hayato nodded. "Be careful."

"But Ebina-chan, Sai-chan, are you alright scouting by yourself?" Tobe asked.

"Since we'll have to avoid fighting, sure enough," Hina laughed as she raised the binoculars she took from the camp. "We only have to worry about ambush. We will have to be careful just moving around."

"Yes. We were more worried since you have to strike deep into a heavily populated zone." Saika also agreed.

"Everyone else, continue with what you're working with." Shizuka stood up. "Disperse!"

Schedule Board:
Hiratsuka Shizuka - Looting (factory)
Tobe Kakeru - Stealing a truck (safe zones) and looting (factory)

Finding a truck here isn't hard. Finding a car that is easy to steal is a different story. They have to either rummage for keys, aim for old trucks, or one with engineered flaws.

"Man, I wish I knew how to hack. That would make things so much easier!" Tobe whined.

"You could barely use a computer, Tobe." Yumiko chided. "Just focus on the things you're good at!"

Fortunately, while he could be a little slow, Tobe knew what he was doing when they broke into the second truck. He found the secret FOB switch, cut it off, and dismantled the steering lock, allowing the car to be started with a screwdriver. It took them an hour to work with what they had, but they finally got a truck with minimal damage to the instrument.

"My first car theft! This will go swimmingly on my record." Tobe sighed.

Shizuka laughed. She felt uncomfortable deep down, but also, the truck's owner was most likely already dead.

"Onwards! To the factories!"

[Acquired Small Bed Truck] - Cargo vehicle (800 kg capacity)

Although predominantly rural, Minakami still has a heavy industry complex, particularly in the south. Several factories exist, from simple metal fabricator companies to microcomponent manufacturing and crane truck assembly plants.

Heck, there's even a recycling center! If they need any random junk, they rummage this place.

"Our target is the three steel parts manufacturing companies. The rest are either unneeded or we don't know how to use them." Shizuka said. "If we're lucky, we should find some leftovers. But if we're out of luck, then it couldn't be helped."

Shizuka will be annoyed, but it's not like the police force purposely led them into a goose chase, right? It was straightforward, even.

There were a lot of dead zombies, some of them with visible truck tracks on their bodies. They most likely get run over by a large truck.

"The tire marks are sizable. Will there be anything left?" Yumiko mumbled.

Fortunately, they were presented with a small pile of pipes left behind. The first stop was a lucky one.

"We can forget 4-inch pipes. They're too dang heavy!" Tobe said. "Even if we can haul them, we can't use them!"

"The bigger pipes, the stronger, right?"

"Yeah? Try to lift one!"

Unsurprisingly, Yumiko couldn't lift one even if she mustered all her strength. "What the?! Did these pipes weigh hundreds of kilograms?"

"Duh, they're used to make traffic lights and electrical poles," Shizuka said. "Tobe is right. We should focus on gathering the small metal pipes instead of large ones."

Tobe used the in-facility tools to cut long pipes into 2-meter ones. There weren't many small-sized pipes left, but they take what they can get. Each piece of 1.5-inch pipe still weighs 8 kg, but even Yumiko could still carry two. Zaimokuza can lift four!

"They have so much good equipment, man." Tobe sighed.

"Honestly, if they have a hot bath, I'd love to move here." Yumiko patted him.

"Eh, can't really use them anyway." Tobe sheepishly said.

Tobe stole the more portable equipment but left the advanced machines alone.

They were out of luck with the second factory. It was more or less stripped clean, and what was left were half-finished products of little use. So they took what they could get and bailed.

In the third factory, they managed to gather a bunch of stainless steel sheets and box tubes. The parts are light and not as durable as the thicker steel pipes, but they found enough that there should be a way to use them.

They found at least four jerrycans of gasoline, 20 liters each. It was easy to forget how precious fuel could be. Supposedly, this gasoline was used to feed the backup generator.

"We more or less gathered as much as we can. Unless we start dismantling these pipe racks." Zaimokuza sighed. "We're lucky the zombies are still far away."

"Good job there, you two." Yumiko told him and Tobe. "I think there was very little room to complain. We need to secure wood next."

The zombies visibly roam the road and the farm, but it will take time to reach the area unless they start sprinting. So, the group left quickly before the noise attracted even more.

Resources gained:
1.5-inch pipe pile (materials) - 2-meter-long pipes with 38mm diameter and 3.6mm wall thickness. Very durable.
1-inch pipe pile (materials) - 2-meter-long pipes with 25mm diameter and 3.3mm wall thickness. Very durable.
Laser cut parts (materials) - A pile of miscellaneous, precision-cut steel parts.
Stainless steel box tubes (materials) - light tubes made of stainless steel used to make furnishing and structural frames.
Stainless steel sheet (materials) - Sheet of stainless steel used to make furnishing.
Jugs of gasoline (liquid fuel, 60) - Plain gasoline used to fuel cars and generators.
Hard hats (Armor, Level 1) - Safety hats worn by people working in heavy industry.

The trip home wasn't as smooth. Shizuka had to run over a few zombies. The glass didn't break because of the film sheet, but Yumiko was terrified. And there were times when zombies latched into the truck.

Thankfully, Zaimokuza and Tobe were able to smack them.

"We need a bigger truck," Shizuka whined. "But I'm not licensed for anything above 3.5 tons."

"We have committed so many crimes, and licensing is what you care about?" Yumiko still can't believe Shizuka sometimes.

"Silly girl, it's not just about permit. The vehicle kinematics are also different between different weight classes." Shizuka smirked. "I'm confident I can outrace 90% touge drivers in a sports car, but don't expect me to maneuver that in a 4-ton behemoth without practicing."

"Fair enough."

"However, we need one to travel back to Chiba. Our van is too fragile, and the students are too vulnerable. A medium truck or a minibus would run over zombies effortlessly at safe road speed." Shizuka said. "I'll get to it eventually, but only after we're strong enough to plow through super-dense zombie hordes in the city."

"...Is it really that important for us to return? With so many people dying in the countryside like this... Chiba City is bound to be worse. My parents... I wonder if they're still alive. Hina already gave up, for sure. Her parents were in Tokyo when the whole country crashed down."

Yumiko didn't choke up but clearly felt down thinking about the worst-case scenario. She wasn't the only one. Most of the kids probably think about their family from time to time.

"That's something you decide by yourself," Shizuka said. "I'm sure your friends are also torn. Some are probably too afraid to find the truth, and some want to see it to the bitter end."

"If the party decides to split, what would you do, Sensei?"

"I choose to go back," Shizuka said. "I brought them here and will see them back home. That is my responsibility as your teacher. However, I would not force people to go back."

"Isn't that unfair? Won't the others be pressured to go with you?"

"It is. But all the more reason you all need to get stronger and be less dependent on me." Shizuka smiled. "When it is time to decide, I hope no one thinks they cannot survive without me around."

Shizuka's parents aren't the youngest. Even though they're wealthy, the likelihood of them surviving the first three days of the outbreak is small. That's why she let go of her hope of meeting them again.

Shizuka's decision to cling to her duty kept her strong and sane. She needed the teens more than the teens needed her. But she couldn't tell them that. It would shatter the camp morale.

After unloading the materials in their new base camp, they went north to the lumber gathering area across the ski resort. This enlarged bend beside the road is where woodcutters pile wood to be carried back to the lumber yard.

"Empty," Tobe remarked. "Let's check another spot that the cops told us. Just a little past the power station."

The power station is located a little to the north. However, the roads were built peculiarly. They first reached a U-turn and then moved south.

Less than ten meters away, north of the power station, was a pair of sheds filled with wood waste. Scaffolding and tree branches were piled up and left to rot and dry, probably until the city cleaning service took care of them. The laws against independent trash burning in Japan are pretty strict.

But the group can make use of these unwanted materials.

"Dubious wood quality, but we'll take what we can get." Tobe licked his lips. "Let's compact them and carry them back."

"Even if they're garbage, we can use them as firewood." Zaimokuza huffed. "We're lucky it's not raining."

So they went north, followed the U-turn, and then south, back to their base.

They could have driven southward from the power station, but the road was narrow, dark, and littered. Best to avoid it as someone unfamiliar with the area.

"Yumiko, are you alright?" Yui asked.

"I'm fine. We were lucky not to have a direct encounter with a horde, though we had a few... road accidents... on our way." Yumiko winced. "What about Hina and Saika? Any words?"

"They said they would use a flare gun if there was a danger. We've not seen any, but I'm still worried nonetheless." Yui explained.

"Funny words from someone who punched a bear." Hachiman snarked.

"You WHAT?" Yumiko gawked.

Shizuka's eyes bulged in shock.

Yukino gave Yumiko a brochure. "This here said the forest east of us is black bear territory. We're advised to carry bear spray if we're going anywhere. However, the bear was stealing produce from the farm when we spotted it."

Taishi whined. "I already used a whistle to chase it out, and it didn't work."

"That still doesn't explain why Yuigahama punched a bear. You HAVE a double-headed hammer." Shizuka pointed.

"It's just a black bear. It's not that scary. Ahaha, hahaha...." Yui laughed, but her eyes were dead and empty from shock. "If I use the hammer, the bear will get hurt."

"Shut it. Don't take a needless danger ever again." Hachiman chastised her. The anger and worry in his voice were raw. "Kill anything that moves and is a threat."

In fairness, it was not like Yui was wrong. Most black bears are minor to moderate threats to late teens and adults. If you smack their nose, they will run like cowards they are.

The real threat is mother black bears. They would fight to the death, thinking their cubs were in danger.

"I do think it was the right decision," Yukino argued. "If not for Yuigahama-san's swift decision, we'd have a bear steak now."

Everyone took a step away from Yukino.

"...You know what, I won't argue with that. You're the scariest living being within twenty kilometers of this resort." Hachiman absolutely chilled hearing that from Yukino. "Good job on defusing the situation, Yuigahama."

"Right." Yui scratched her head, embarrassed.

Yuigahama Yui
Fighting: 2 -> 3

"Either way, everyone should be careful walking around here. If you see a cub, walk backward and not make a noise." Shizuka said. "Zombies are scarier than black bears, sure, but there's no need to fight perfectly avoidable battles."

Around 6:30 PM, Saika and Hina finally returned from their scouting, and they had stories to tell.

"We learned a lot," Saika said. "About the zombies and how they work."

"Do tell."

"First of all, their diet. They don't eat dead bodies. They could not chew properly due to their stronger yet less flexible jaw." Hina showed them photos of a zombie eating a cow. "They would tear into the abdomen and eat the innards."

The other teens almost vomited.

"Oh boy. At least it's not brains." Komachi snarked.

"People who fell prey to zombie attacks this way weren't resurrected. We found a few... bodies, with hollowed torsos, and no sign of them moving." Saika's hesitation was damning. "They basically died on the spot."

"Either way, this means it should be possible to kill zombies by blowing their stomachs. But we'll need military weapons to do that. Just police pistols aren't enough." Hina explained. "They also get more active in the morning and late afternoon. And we spotted a few wandering in the rivers and farm irrigation, drinking."

"Huh." Hachiman realized. "The zombies need hydration as well. They don't eat fellow zombies because their skins are hard, and their meat is too firm. That's why they only eat innards."

"That's what we figured, yeah," Hina said. "Also, zombies seemed to enter a state of hibernation sometimes. If you see an intact corpse, be careful and don't hesitate to give a lobotomy."

Looking at the blood at the tip of Hina's gold lever, it was clear what she had just killed on her way.

"West of us, the area is clear. We went north to loot the ski resort for food and found some. We also looted every key we could find." Saika poured a small bag full of keys. "I don't think we'd have a shortage of cars. But most of them are small, so it's not like we can take them out of the city."

Resources Gained:
Staple food (Carb/40)
Assorted drinks (Luxury/20)
Branded coffee (Luxury/10)

"Good job."

"And another disturbing find we had..." Saika sighed. "I think the virus behaves differently with children."

Saki, who only quietly listened, slammed the table.

"What do you mean with that, bastard?!"

"Neesan!" Taishi reflexively stopped her.

"We found a few children's bodies in the resort. All mummified and unmoving." Hina sighed. "A few showed signs of injuries from abuse, perhaps even deadly zombie attacks, but... I think this explains why you will never see a zombified child."

"Does that mean the elementary kids also..." Yui muttered in horror. "Oh no."

"...I know it is insensitive to say this, but." Hayato earnestly coughed. "I do think it is a small mercy from the heavens. Let us pray that every one of these child pass away in peace."

"There ARE surviving children in the evacuation zone, though." Shizuka calmed Saki down. "There weren't many, but that's just Japanese countryside in general."

"Right." Saki sat down again and calmed down. "My bad."

Shizuka could understand Saki's concern. Saki and Taishi were part of a trio. Their youngest sister, Keika, is still early in elementary school.

"Keika-chan was fine the last time father and mother called us." Taishi hugged his sister. "Whether she lived or died, at least she had our parents with her. Let us pray for safety and work our way back to Chiba."

With a newfound resolve, everyone tightens their stomach and gets a heavy fill of dinner that day.

Based on Hina and Saika's report, there's unlikely to be a threat of a zombie horde tonight. For extra caution, however, everyone put strings in some areas connected to a makeshift bell made of cans. Even strong wind won't do anything, but zombies or bears would rattle them, alerting anyone doing night duty.

[ ] Drink some coffee and take a night shift.
[ ] Sleep.

Chapter 6 - 2 Unsettling atmosphere, part 2
Shizuka decided to sleep early. No one does anything noteworthy at night, so she might as well save her strength for the hectic morning.

As she made rounds for the final time, Shizuka spotted Hachiman and Yui sitting together, unusually close, watching over the dark farm south of the catering restaurant.

"Sorry, Hikki. You must be angry, right?"

"I'm not that angry," Hachiman said. "It's embarrassing to say this, but I'm worried to death."

"Hahaha, thanks." Yui laughed lightly. "I guess Hikki is a man, after all. You're still a gentleman to the end."

"But you know, we cannot afford it." Yui's tone became serious. "This world full of death and violence... if you can't stand up for yourself, you will be eaten."

"I feel it runs in my blood the moment that bear appears, undeterred by Taishi-kun's whistle. I know, in the back of my head, one of us has to make a move. And the last to make a move lose."

"So I punched it with all my strength. I never punched anyone or anything that hard. But I think I gave it a bloody nose." Yui sighed. "I hope it earned its lesson, but if it doesn't..."

Yui raised her fiberglass-handled, double-headed hammer.

"Like you said, Hikki," Yui told him. "Kill everything that is moving and unfriendly."

"...If you're that determined, do it," Hachiman responded. "But don't do it alone."

"Funny coming from you, Hikki. You did everything yourself all the time."

"In a peaceful, prosperous world, one can afford to be a slacking loner." Hachiman scoffed. "Sadly, I'm not determined or misanthropic enough for a solo survival. I just..."

"I just don't want to lose anyone."

"I see." Yui laughed again. "You must be worried about Yukinon a lot. After all, she is someone special to you."

"That's true, but I think you misunderstood. No, I think I also misunderstood my own feelings." Hachiman looked up. "My thoughts of Yukinoshita... it was beyond admiration. It was a blind worship."

"I thought she was different, someone worthy to look up to. Someone aloof, someone perfect and can do no wrong. Someone who would never lie. But I was mistaken." Hachiman rambled. "She's weak, emotional, and a liar. She's just a human being, just like you and me."

"I feel sad that my preconception of her was shattered. But I am not angry at her. I am angry at myself for holding into relationships based on assumptions and lies." Hachiman chuckled. "It's going to be awkward between us for a while, but don't worry, at least we talked about it."

"I see."

"To sum it up, my feelings for her aren't romantic."

"You mean not yet."

"Why are you such a selfish bitch sometimes?" Hachiman whined. "You confessed. And you think I would fall for someone else?"

"I know I can be bitchy. But I kept thinking again and again. And my feelings will stay the same way, Hikki." Yui looked at him. "I like Hikki. Romantically, that is."

Shizuka almost spurted her beer.

"It is not because Hikki helped my dog once. It is because I get to know you. Both your merits and flaws. When the world ended, and Yukinon was dying, I felt I had no choice. I had to confess before I died in regret. I'm sorry if that makes you uncomfortable."

Ah, so that was the reason why the atmosphere was weird.

"...Thanks." Hachiman coughed awkwardly. "I distrusts others, yet also distrusts myself the most. Even today, I keep thinking, maybe she was joking, maybe she wasn't thinking about it clearly, maybe she felt indebted... all sorts of irrational thoughts flooded my mind."

"I feel like I don't deserve it." Hachiman looked at Yui back. "But feeling like shit is a luxury I cannot afford. And to be honest, I am grateful. And I envy your courage, Yuigahama."

"For that reason, I promise I'll fight our way out of this hell." Hachiman stood up and offered her a hand. "Two of us, together."

It wasn't clear whether Hachiman returned it, but both Yui and Shizuka knew he accepted the confession. And Yui decided she had nothing to lose as she reached for his hand and inadvertently hugged him.

"Kids." Shizuka chuckled and left.

She wasn't envious. Totally not envious. TOTALLY!

She might need another can.

DAY 3 10:00 PM -> DAY 4 06:00 AM

Dead in the morning, a police officer came to visit the base camp. Everyone politely greeted him and welcomed him.

"Everyone seems to be in high spirits." He smiled as he sat down. "It's good. Very good."

They used the abandoned open-air restaurant for meetings and reception. It's both convenient and comfortable to use.

"It is relatively peaceful here, other than the bear," Shizuka said. "There are few zombies, enough that we could deal with them should they become a threat."

"With your abilities, I have faith you do. But did you say a bear?"

"Our students encountered a bear yesterday. It was stealing vegetables from the farm and wasn't deterred by bells. One of my students punched it in the face to chase it away."

"Hmm, this is strange. I take it Chiba people are unfamiliar with bears?"

"Absolutely."

"Right. I have friends in forest management, so we talked quite a bit about bears. Bear appearance and attacks in August intensify because 18-month-old youths are being weaned off the family groups around these months while preparing for hibernation in November."

"In other words, they're hungry?" Yui asked.

"Yes." The police. "In any case, the bear population rises alongside the depopulation of human villages. And unfortunately, Aimata isn't an exception. Now that the human population has disappeared, the bears probably think this area is free range."

"My concern is the bear not being deterred by whistles. Black bears are dangerous, but they're not easily provoked and angered. Most of them are skittish and anti-confrontational. But an angered black bears won't give up with just a punch to the face."

That was indeed weird.

"So my assumption is either the bear is young, starving, or both. In any case, please refrain from trying to fight one empty-handed. Black bear arms are as strong as chimpanzees, and their claws can rip a human face easily."

Welp. Looks like everyone underestimated the danger back then. Shizuka included.

"I see. How should we deal with it if it shows up again?" Yui asked.

"Use any means necessary to drive it away, contact the evacuation shelter, and we might be able to spare a hunter with a shotgun to deal with it." The officer explained. "Legally, I cannot recommend this, but you can contact the police and make an official report should you accidentally kill it in self-defense."

Japan's nature protection law is stringent. However, even the police cannot spare anything to protect the outsiders.

"Understandable. Thank you for the explanation." Shizuka and Yui bowed, and Yui left.

"As for why I came here, we had a request." The officer bowed.

"Truthfully, a second shelter was built in Sarugakyo Elementary, hidden well in the woods. However, today, the shelter lost access to water because of a failing pump. Unfortunately, this waterworks facility was built in a densely populated area."

"Our shelter cannot spare our personnel as we're rebuilding our defenses, which will attract zombie hordes from the noise."

"Hmm, interesting." Shizuka thought. "How long can the second shelter last without the pump?"

"Until sunset. Should that happen, the people will have no choice but to manually get water from the river, which poses its own risk."

The base camp had its own well as the primary source of water. So, it doesn't concern their survival directly. The people from the first shelter cannot spare any help, so it's not like they can demand it on behalf of the second shelter.

However, helping the utility people will benefit them. If their infrastructure started failing, they'd have people to rely on.

This is not going to be an easy mission. Especially since Kawasaki and Zaimokuza finished their night duty and are not in peak condition.

"We should help!" Zaimokuza said. "I'm not that tired! A can of energy drink is all I need!"

"I'm tired. But I agree with Zaimokuza." Saki said. "If our hot spring is broken and no one can fix it, Miura will bitch."

"Hey!" Yumiko protested. But Yumiko can't deny it either.

Mission request: Siege defense (Medium-hard difficulty)
Required personnel: 4 minimum, 6-8 recommended
Allied Group: Sarugakyo shelter guard, 6 people

[ ] Agree to the request and take volunteers except for tired ones.
[ ] Rest and delay until the afternoon and depart with volunteers.
[ ] Discuss with all the students, potential rejection down the line.
[ ] Politely reject it. Because it was too dangerous.

Chapter 7
Shizuka had decided.

"I'm sorry, Officer, but since this would be a group effort, I will have to discuss this with the kids." Shizuka smiled. "I'm sure you don't mind."

"Oh, yes. Please do." The officer began to sweat. "I'll be frank... we are ashamed to rely on children. However, many of us have seen how strong your group is. The average person cannot survive fighting these zombies."

It is not that they can't. It is that they won't. While Soubu kids are gifted and shockingly adaptive, they're still humans. Not to mention the disparity of combat abilities between members.

"Half of my students are average people."

Shizuka didn't elaborate on the other half, though.

Most survivors could barely cope with the situation, losing people dear to them and their way of life. Most of these zombies are their family, friends, and neighbors. Most people are too afraid to take matters into their own hands.

Shizuka couldn't blame them. But she's not obligated to care about their safety and feelings.

"Please help me explain the situation to the students over breakfast."

"First of all, I apologize for intruding on your breakfast. As you can tell, the situation stabilized somewhat, yet it was also perpetually changing. Among other things, our evacuation shelter wasn't the only one in this region."

"Another community shelter was built in a secluded elementary school, and at least a dozen pockets of survivors spread all over the region. The most important was the Aimata dam and dam control station. Fortunately, their location is relatively secluded, and no zombies wander there."

"Anyway, to explain our new information regarding zombies, we found peculiarities in their behavior. That is, regarding machinery noise. Zombies might seem attracted to machinery noise, chasing cars when they spot one. But the truth is more nuanced than that, and some of our scouts have tested it."

"Zombies learned to ignore constantly running machines. If you leave a car idle, zombies will ignore it. You could hide in an idling car, provided the zombies don't see you. The same applies to the municipal water pump. Once we get it running, we could also use it as an outpost."

"White noise, huh." Hayato rubbed his chin. "I assume this also applies to things like electrical generators."

"The electric company personnel believe so, and we had no reason to question it." The officer nodded. "However, although zombies have dulled senses, their hearing cannot be underestimated. They will notice the sounds of cars moving and stopping, car doors opening and closing, and door slamming or glass breaking."

They instinctively ignore static noise and pay attention to dynamic noises. Though it was likely an instinctual response, it was still scary.

"Shit, that explains why distant zombies approached us yesterday." Tobe gawked in realization. "It was the sound of my metal cutter!"

"I mean, we knew it would happen. But now we understand the intricacies." Yumiko sighed. "Don't fret about it."

"Basically, repairing the pump will not be a silent job. There are bound to be zombie attacks, and we need help to fend them off until the pump becomes operational. This is going to be dangerous." The officer looked at Shizuka, who nodded. "That is all."

The officer sat down.

"You hear the officer. Since we all know the details, you guys get to decide." Shizuka crossed her arms. "If you go, I go. If you don't go, I stay. No one peer pressure anyone. This is your life at stake. Not participating is not cowardice. I'd even say sensible. This is not a battle for us to win."

"You heard me the first time," Zaimokuza said. "I am going."

"I'm also going," Saki said. "Miura?"

"Of course, I'll go. It would be a problem if we lose the water utility workers." Yumiko smugly grinned. "I'd rather die than be unable to shower."

"I'm honestly worried if you're being serious now." Hayato winced. "I'll also fight."

"Since y'all have decided, count me in!" Tobe raised a thumbs up.

"I've been bedridden for quite a while, so I'd like to move around a bit," Yukino said. "I'll be joining as well."

"I don't want to join the fray. We'll ambush the stragglers for you." Hachiman said. "Cutting off loose ends will help somewhat."

"Right. We'll try to take down the zombies that come in smaller numbers." Yui nodded.

"I agree," Hina said.

"I'll also join." Saika pumped his fist. "We'll do what we can to help."

"Right. I appreciate the enthusiasm. Now we gotta plan everything." Shizuka said. "Officers, I assume you have a mitigation plan?"

"Yes." The officer said. "We can use firecrackers to momentarily distract the zombies. This won't stop them from attacking. But it will reduce their focus and coordination. One of our snipers will assist you by culling some zombies from the rooftop."

"A sniper? You have a rifle?"

"No. It was a hunter with a 30-caliber airgun. It was decently powerful and far less noisy than our M60 revolver. However, its effective range against zombies is only 30-40 meters."

"That makes sense."

Compared to actual firearms, the range of airguns is staggeringly less.

"What if we can't hold them back?" Hayato asked.

"Evacuate as soon as possible instead of waiting until the last second." The officer grimly said. "People sitting on the roof are relatively safe, but those on the ground are always in danger. Zombies seem to have relatively short pursuit range, so running is always an option."

"Zombies cannot climb?"

"To a degree, they can climb windows and vault over some walls with effort. However, they cannot use a ladder. Some survivors blocked the staircase and used ladders to stay alive on their second floor. However, some zombies bypassed this because of objects around the walls. Be vigilant."

"Right. Now, should we rest and prepare or-"

"While I know that some of us are tired, I believe we must depart as soon as possible," Yukino argued. "I am not usually proposing a bold move, but I have my reason. Namely, the weather."

Yukino used a mercury thermometer to show the temperature was 25 degrees Celsius. Relatively low for summer in Japan.

"Ah." Hayato widened his eyes. "The air temperature will be higher in the afternoon."

"We can mitigate injuries by wearing winter gear, but if we do that in the afternoon, that's tantamount to suicide," Yukino explained. "As long as the temperature is between 25 and 27 degrees, we still have room to breathe."

"I agree with Yukinoshita's assessment," Yumiko said, but she asked Saki and Zaimokuza. "Would you two be okay, though?"

"That is fine with me!" Zaimokuza huffed.

"I also agree with that opinion," Saki said. "Sensei?"

"Winter gear as battle armor, Yukinoshita isn't wrong in this regard. The longer we wait, the hotter it will be, and that's dangerous for an extended fight."

Heck, even with their summer jacket, the sun will roast them.

"Alright. The rest of you, please be careful." Shizuka told the rest of the students. "Be vigilant. We don't know what kind of danger might show up unexpectedly."

"Yes, Sensei!"

...

"Please be careful, Yumiko! Yukinon!" Yui hugged both of them shortly before they entered the car. "We will help you in a pinch."

Yumiko and Yukino awkwardly looked at each other because they had never been on good terms before this summer camp. Their only relationship was the shared friendship they had with Yuigahama Yui.

"I'm going, Hachiman! Saika-dono!" Zaimokuza saluted. "Are you sure you will join?"

"Don't bite more than you can chew," Hachiman told him. "Know your limits. Otherwise, you will die."

"Please be careful, Yoshiteru-kun!" Saika saluted back.

"I'm sorry I couldn't be much help." Hina gave Saki a thermos box. "Electrolyte and sugar water. Even though it's still in the morning, be careful of heat exhaustion and stay hydrated."

"Thanks." Saki took it and put it in the car trunk.

"Ladies and gentlemen! Time to kick ass!" Shizuka howled as the car followed the police car en route to their destination.

Waiting for them was the water company truck and the workers. As well as a bunch of volunteers from the second shelter. Most are physically fit and strong men. Strange for them to rely on high school students in that context.

Apparently, they didn't expect it either.

"Officer? Are you telling us that our only help is a woman and kids?" A burly man with a thin beard pointed. "And why are they wearing ski clothing in the hottest month of the season?! What a joke."

"This woman and these kids saved my life and two other officers. Please be mindful of what you are saying. " The officer chastised the burly man.

The officer switched his hat into a police helmet and pulled a steel tonfa. The same tonfa that Hayato and Tobe crafted yesterday.

"Ungrateful bastard." Saki chided.

Yukino told her. "Don't get provoked. Those consumed by fear often lash out, trying to hide it. Let the result speak for itself."

After signaling the utility workers, the workers opened the door to the waterworks and began the repair.

And then the noise, so much noise. The power tools and the machinery made so much noise that it would echo hundreds of meters from here.

"No fucking wonder there will be hordes!" Shizuka made a stance. "Let them pour!"

Faint gunshots from the rooftop sniper followed, signifying the fact that there were movements.

"East and west! They're coming! Throw the firecracker!"

Rolls of firecrackers were thrown on the road to create noises in time for the zombies to show up, somewhat confused-looking. However, the living dead did not miss the presence of armed humans and charged.

Shizuka clenched his gloved hand and punched the first zombie that came to her. As soon as the zombie was stunned, its neck began pouring blood courtesy of Yukino's almost-unseen slash.

"God, the fact that she did it with a glorified kitchen knife scares me still!"

It might not be an immediate death, but the slash itself weakened the zombie's neck, allowing Shizuka to give a summary swing kick that threw the zombie's head off the socket.

It was morbid, but Shizuka had no time to be shocked.

"DORYA!" Zaimokuza stopped the charge of three zombies at once and pushed them without falling backward. "DARE TO BEAR YOUR FANGS AGAINST ME?! YOU COURTED DEATH! [DEAD-ENDER HOMERUN]!"

He smashed one of the zombies with the hammerhead, throwing it a few meters away. The shouting and weapon noise seemed to attract the zombies in his direction.

"Assist Zaimokuza! Don't let the zombies overwhelm him!" Shizuka yanked one zombie and smashed it to the pavement three times before she could let it go.

Yumiko used the hook of her crowbar to make a zombie fall on its face and smacked its head until the skull shattered. This girl really knows how to swing efficiently.

Hayato seemed to change his style and opted for a pair of wooden tonfas, which Shizuka thought was unique. The way he used them resembles CQC more than dual-wielding blunt weapons, similar to Okinawan karate. If he could master the movement enough to switch into steel tonfas, Shizuka couldn't imagine how deadly he could be.

Tobe and Saki punched above others, but Saki, in particular, became more ferocious than before. Even though she was tired from her night duty, it didn't affect her much.

Her combat skills had improved. She could probably give Tobe a long run in a zombie-killing competition.

But above all else, the only person who could literally dismantle zombies like dolls. That was Yukino. She's not fighting on the same level as others. She's actually dancing her way around zombies, borderline untouchable.

That said, as Shizuka emphasized, they were still humans. Split-second oversight, and they either got clawed or bitten. Their winter gear helped to reduce their wound.

Yukino's body landed hard, but her skill in martial arts allowed her to avoid injuries from the impact. She needed to because her body was weaker than the other girls.

Before a zombie could pin her down, she spun into a squatting position with her knife unleashed, literally making a blood spiral as she beheaded it.

"Are you alright?" Hayato asked her after he caught a claw swipe with his tonfa and wrenched a zombie into submission with a skilled grapple. And then spun the zombie's head to break its neck.

"It's tougher than I expected." Yukino loosened her right shoulder. "But I can still fight."

Tobe spat as he swung his steel pipe to crush a zombie's neck. "Thinking about it is useless! Just kill them!"

Instead of letting a zombie push him, Zaimokuza tackled the zombie and used his body weight to crush the throat. However, another zombie clawed his back, which made him cry.

"ARGH!"

Shizuka herself was worse for wear. She was thankful for the old leather gloves. It made a difference in how hard she could punch and how confident she could grab her target without fearing injuries.

"I need a real fucking SHOE!" She yelled, kicking a zombie in the face.

"I knew I asked the right people." The poor policeman was struggling to keep up. Though he was skilled enough to do just that. "I wish you could join our shelter."

"We prefer the silence of the nature." Yumiko bashed a zombie that Zaimokuza threw to the wall. "But thank you for the offer!"

Were this a peaceful setting, the actions of the Soubu High students and their teacher would've terrified people. However, all it did was inspire awe. Perhaps even jealousy.

Yukino dashed forth with all her strength. Not only did a zombie lose its head, but two zombies lost the function of one arm each, dangling and bleeding.

However, seconds after she executed it, she wobbled around and ran to the back to reach for the icebox. "I need a drink..."

Ran out of juice, huh.

Shizuka might also run out of stamina soon. This protracted fight was really disadvantageous to humans. The moment Yukino returns, Shizuka will also rehydrate and recover her strength.

"Oh shit!"

"Come on! Come on!"

"Kondo! No!"

One of the camp volunteers screamed shitless when a zombie got him pinned. Only for Saki's axe to chop halfway into the back of its head.

The volunteer shoved the dead zombie and then stood up. He was unsettled by how calm Saki looked when she helped him but decided to be polite anyway. "Thank you, young lady."

"Another horde!" The hunter on the rooftop yelled. "I'm out of gas! Please be careful!"

It was a smaller horde, roughly ten zombies. However, no other zombie groups were heading in their direction.

Yui yelled while raising her double-headed hammer. "Take them down!"

"Eh?!" The volunteer group was surprised when another group of teenagers aggressively ran toward the incoming zombies from an unseen direction and blindsided the horde.

Komachi and Taishi collectively jumped on a muscular zombie, with his shovel to its neck and her nail gun to the side of its head. It didn't even have a chance to roar before having its second life taken away by two young teenagers.

Few noticed Hachiman when he pulled a bloody screwdriver from one zombie, only to shove it upward through another zombie's jaw. This attack allowed Hina free reign to stab it from the side as a finisher.

"GROAR!"

"SILENCE!" Yui yelled as she smacked a zombie and caused it to backflip from the sheer force, obliterating its jaw. Saika finished it with his framing hammer the moment the body dropped.

"Hydrate! Hydrate!" Zaimokuza ripped the bottlecap and poured the content down his throat with gusto, and the rest of the group followed suit. The group took the chance to recoup their breath and energy while their friends wiped out the small horde using the surprise factor.

Although this was the weaker half of the Soubu camp survivors, they were strong enough that the few stragglers did not stand a chance.

"They really covered our asses." Tobe whistled. "GJ, frendo!"

The power tool noise stopped and was soon replaced by a relatively quiet rumble and high-pitched hum. This 50 to 60-decibel noise group meant the pumps were operational again.

"Pressure maintained! Noise level within acceptable range! The pump is operational again!" One of the utility workers said. "We got water!"

"Bring in the barricades! Make sure the building is protected!"

Yui, Hina, and Yumiko shared high-fives while Hayato and Tobe bumped their fists.

"Are you alright, Taishi? This is your first combat, right?" Saki asked her little brother.

"I'm fine. Just a bit of scrapes and bumps." Taishi told his big sister as he hugged his trusty shovel. "We're doing hit-and-run attacks, so the zombies never hit us full force."

"We don't know how much it helps you, but we tried our best." Hina winced. "Thanks to Hikitani-kun for coordinating our movements."

"I'm sure Hikio did." Yumiko nodded. "Good job, everyone."

"Thank you for the help, everyone." The water company workers formally bowed in gratitude.

"It's fine. We're just doing what's right." Hayato humbly responded. "After all, what are communities for, if not for helping each other?"

"That's right. Water saves lives. It is important for everyone." Yui nodded.

Shizuka let these two handle the courtesies. It would be more beneficial because they have the social skills to handle the aftermath.

Compared to them, Saki and Yukino were quiet. Saki cleaned her axe, and Yukino sharpened her big knife with a whetstone. It makes sense for Yukino since she was worried about her weapon getting dull.

That's one of the weaknesses of a swordlike weapon.

Though Shizuka's group was considerably battered, it could not match the injuries suffered by the volunteers. It doesn't mean they were crybaby or anything. But they were injured to such a degree that two had to be carried out by their shoulders.

"Am I the weird one, or do they seem awfully weak?" Yumiko whispered to Shizuka. "So much shit-talking and no show."

"In terms of physical strength, these men could slap you silly with one hand and break your neck with another. However, armed fighting is not just about strength, but skill and commitment." Shizuka commented. "They either hesitated or were overly aggressive. No balance or finesse whatsoever."

"They committed the same mistake I did," Hayato said. "That's why they took more injuries than they should."

"In fairness, we don't know the situation. Perhaps some of the volunteers recognized the zombies and hesitated." Yukino mumbled. "If I saw someone I know as a zombie, I would freeze."

"Ah," Yumiko was agape. "Anyway, we need to clean up. These winter gears are too useful not to reuse, but they soak blood like you wouldn't believe. Just look at Yukinoshita."

"The demerit of using a blade to fight is I have to deal with blood vessels," Yukino remarked. "Is there a good place where we can clean our clothes?"

Even as far back as the medieval era, Christian clergy preferred hammers or mace over swords and axes because they 'shed no blood.' Now, this is not objectively true. And the widespreadness of this belief is historically questionable. It could be either propaganda or outright fiction.

However, impact weapons spill a lot less blood than bladed weapons. That is a proven fact. Worse yet, Yukino had it worse than Saki because an axe can crush to kill, not entirely reliant on its sharpness.

For Yukino, anything less than a deep slice is a failed hit.

"Ah." The Police officer removed his helmet and wore his hat again. "There is a dry-cleaning service near the dam control office and hot spring ryokan. It should be relatively safe, especially with dam control workers around."

"In fairness, there's a public bath here as well. But I'm worried about safety because the buildings haven't been swept." The officer said.

"Please lead us to the dry cleaning shop."

...

Aimata Dam is the lifeblood of the region. Not only does it control the flow and prevent flooding along the Akadan River, but it also produces 6.2 Megawatts of permitted electricity.

It was built at the southern end of the Akaya Lake.

"They put jersey barrier and steel wires around here. That's just how important the facility is." Hachiman remarked. "Even though it was so remote."

"In terms of pure power, the dam didn't generate much. Most of Minakami is actually powered by solar panels. We have thousands of square meters of solar power installation. Most are located in Aramaki because we want to use the hilly area for something useful other than the designated pastures. Nevertheless, this is still a vital piece of infrastructure."

"It is not like zombies would wander up the mountain for no reason, let alone wreaking havoc on the solar plants." Saika laughed. "I think Minakami really lucked in."

"However, there is still a possibility of blackout in the future." The police seriously told them. "If the power grid in this prefecture fails, we must manually cut Numata off and restore power independently. Should that happen, we will seek your aid again."

"Ey, it can't be helped. I would never survive without electricity!" Tobe winced. "Right, Sensei?"

"That's true. Unlike water matters, we're not power-independent. The problem of Minakami is our problem." Shizuka nodded.

In theory, they could secure a gas generator and rig it. In practice, none of them are familiar enough with electricity to know how.

Shizuka thought again about what Hachiman had said about needing books to survive. While her students have some surprisingly convenient survival skills, not all do. And they might feel helpless at times.

They need to find a library.

After cleaning their bodies and clothes, everyone got their wound tended. While the main party got a few open wounds, the support group doesn't need much beyond a few swipes of iodines and painkillers.

"We don't have bandages, but I cut this clean white linen sheet into strips," Hina said. "Should be enough for everyone and then some. We have 80 meters worth of bandage now."

"That is questionable, but damn, that cut is neat," Shizuka remarked. "Good job, Ebina."

"How could you stand so much pain, Kawasaki." Yumiko twitched. And now, the adrenaline had subsided, and Yumiko could feel all the wounds on her wrapped body.

"You get used to it." Saki yawned. "Cling to Ibuprofen like your life depends on it."

"It's only going to get more awful in the afternoon. We need to call today a wrap." Shizuka said. "We are lucky no one here got major injuries and sprain."

"Sensei, how about we stay here until noon?" Taishi asked. "Since no one is in our base, we can have a short vacation. Besides, some of us hadn't got sleep."

"The most ridiculous part is I agree with you." Shizuka grimaced. "You guys want to go home or nah?"

Zaimokuza snoozed until Hachiman pushed him and told him to get proper bedding.

"I take that as a yes," Shizuka concluded. "Alright, if you guys want to play around, go ahead. And don't bring zombies here."

"Yes, Sensei!"

Shizuka spent the remainder of their morning writing her journal while enjoying the company of beers before returning to the base camp.

In a surprising twist of fate, someone delivered shoes and gloves. While they were outwardly prideful, it was clear that some people from the second evacuation shelter were thankful.

Apparently, there was a sports equipment store built beside the school. The selection is limited, so for them to get some of these is helpful.

These safety shoes don't have much protective value. However, they would immensely help in running and fighting. No more loafers for Shizuka.

The rigger gloves, however, are a vast improvement over their regular working gloves. Shizuka preferred the leather gloves she got from the cops, but the kids could use the extra protection and grip.

Finally, they're no longer feeling naked and vulnerable in fights. It should be possible for them to tackle a more risky endeavor. But all things considered, the injuries they suffered today were considerable.

So Shizuka could not be reckless. Especially since it would be suicidal to use winter gear in the afternoon.

debuff list 1
Anyway, how does caffeine mechanic works here?
Caffeine works by delaying sleepy debuff for half a turn (3-4 hours). You can stack caffeine 4 times a day, afterward they're useless and fatigue debuff is incurred on character.

Here's how they work, basically
Half Morale debuff = -10% dodge, -1 fighting
Full Morale debuff = -20% dodge, -2 fighting, -1 shooting
Half Morale buff = +10% dodge, +1 fighting
Full Morale buff = +10% dodge, +2 fighting, +1 shooting

Injury debuff (≤50% HP) = -10% dodge, -1 fighting, chances of light injury (takes 1-2 day to heal, debuff only)
Injury debuff (≤25% HP) = -20% dodge, -2 fighting, -1 shooting, chances of moderate injury (takes 3 or more days to heal, incapacitated)
If HP reach 0 and character escaped/rescued, they get moderate injury
If HP reach 0 and character can't escape/wasn't rescued, they die

Night shift debuff = -2 shooting, -2 wits, -1 fighting
(this can be reduced to -1, -1, and 0 via night fighting training)

Sleepy debuff = -15% max stamina, -1 fighting, -1 shooting
Fatigue debuff = -30% max stamina, -2 fighting, -2 shooting

Chapter 8 - A short peace
Shizuka decided to wrap it up today and sleep early. The kids didn't have anything significant planned, so she left them to their devices. For the most part, they really swept the entire neighborhood clean.

In particular, they went to steal every rice storage container, whether it had content or not.

It was because of what they found AFTER they returned to the camp.

"EW! Get them away, Hikki!" Yui cringed.

Yumiko held her mouth in disgust.

"Shut it." Hachiman calmly used a trash tong to dispose of rats caught in the deadly traps. "Be thankful I put the traps at all."

"For a second, I thought you caught them for emergency food supplies." Yukino snarked.

"I would not. Not because rats are icky, but because they're vectors of diseases." Hachiman offered one dead rat in response. "Unless you wanna try, frail girl."

"No, thank you." Yukino conceded and raised both hands.

"Rats could be an issue, so we can't store our rice and noodles in the bag. They have to be either in a cabinet or rice container." Saika sighed.

Taishi added. "And the farms aren't safe either. In a few days, our supply of vegetables could've gone."

"Making canned vegetables also consumed fuel and time," Saki said. "We could only make so many pickled vegetables and soup."

"I mean, we have a lot of feral cats and dogs roaming." Komachi winced and pointed at the distance. "They escaped the city because zombies are chasing them as prey. And because there are rats in the farm, the feral dogs now have a reliable food source."

"Feral dogs? You guys have to be cautious!" Shizuka told them. "Feral dogs tend to come in groups and can be aggressive. And if any of you got rabies, it's game over. Rabies is extremely rare in Japan, but that was due to diligent intervention by animal control. More than half of the population is dead. We can't be too certain of our safety."

It is unclear how many people survived and fled the area. Less than 1500 people were accounted for. Spread between two evacuation shelters and dozens of pockets of survivors.

"Hundreds of people decided to go to the mountain." The police officer told Shizuka. "They thought the mountain would provide space and protection. However, surviving in true wilderness is not easy."

Zombies are one thing, but threats of nature are another. Between wild animals, lack of easily accessible resources, and lack of medicine...

"If it's wild animals, you could use these." The police officer brought up a couple of plastic briefcases and opened them.

"Airsoft guns?"

"What? Why would we need toys?" Tobe gawked.

"Isn't to repel thieving monkeys?" Hina realized. "I heard even before the zombie outbreak, Japanese countryside areas had problems with thieving animals. And because the law states you can't use lethal force, airsoft guns are used to ward off pests."

"No wonder!" Taishi clapped his hands. "I found some airsoft guns in the houses nearby, likely owned by the deceased farmer. I didn't take them because they didn't seem that important."

"Indeed. Even here in Gunma, there are a lot of wild pests. Raccoons, minxes, weasels and badgers. Most of them mind their own business, but the absence of humans might change things."

"Oh God, we're shooting animals now?" Yumiko covered her face. "I'm about to cry for real."

"Can't be helped. We're squatters. We had to take responsibility for the farm now." Hayato mirthy laughed. "Unless we want the veggies gone."

"If you wanted, I could also teach you to shoot properly."

"Officers, you sure have a lot of time to spare. Huh." Saki scoffed.

Saki's suspicion wasn't unfounded. The other students probably shared the same worry. In fact, Shizuka already knew it from the beginning. This specific Officer was assigned not just as a liaison for the police in the first shelter but also as a neighborhood watch.

He was specifically assigned to monitor the Soubu students.

"What's there to lose? I'm sure Officer just wanted to teach us useful skills." Komachi grinned. "I'm sure he wouldn't try to teach us to shoot wrong."

"I'd be the judge of that." Shizuka made a maniacal grin. "I learned to shoot guns in Guam and in Hawaii before."

This made the Officer sweated. He was young, maybe twenty-seven or twenty-eight. However, Shizuka noticed a different vibe from him. If he graciously offered it, then Shizuka could witness it herself.

"I got them." Taishi dropped two additional briefcases of airsoft.

"Although this is a toy, it is also realistic and not harmless. So I'll teach you how to handle it as real firearms."

"First, always make sure not to point it toward a person. Never, ever. Secondly, Make sure a gun is unloaded in storage." The Officer removed the magazine, then cocked the gun to make sure it was empty. "And even when it was empty, make sure the safety is on."

"You may think of this as a hassle, but a small mistake could cost someone's life. There aren't a lot of guns in Japan, and pistols are highly prohibitive items in particular. There are more than 150.000 private guns in Japan, and only 50 to 100 are pistols. Solely owned by professional shooting athletes."

"That few?" Saika was surprised.

"The opposite is true in the United States, the land of firearms. There are 114 guns per 100 people, and a good portion of these guns are of pistol variety. There were a lot of accidents involving pistols, and the vast majority of the incidents were user error, not faulty firearms."

"Always carry your pistol with the safety toggled on. Some pistols don't have manual safety, though. Please keep that in mind." The Officer pulled his service revolver. "For example, most revolvers do not have it, but we have rubber inserts to prevent accidental trigger pull."

"Now, let us move to holding posture." The Officer picked up an airsoft pistol and pointed it down. "Finger off the trigger. This is even more important to learn because many people failed it and paid the price."

The Officer demonstrated where he put his finger around the pistol outside of the trigger guard.

"Third, don't aim at something unless you plan to shoot it. The safest way is to always point your gun downward diagonally. Not straight down and not to the side."

"Only after mastering these three points can you start and learn shooting. So I'll teach you shooting posture now."

All the kids enthusiastically followed the seemingly tedious process of learning how to shoot. Shizuka could only nod in approval. Even the seemingly bored Hachiman and suspicious Saki.

So they do rotation training where they load the toy guns and unlock the safety, jog a little with correct gun handling, and then shoot to hit hanging targets from 5 to 10 meters away. Once they're done shooting, they put the safety on, unload the gun magazine, and put the gun and magazine back on the table.

"I have never seen anyone so enthusiastic about pistol drill. Most people would think it was tedious. Six out of ten police officers aren't enthusiastic about gun use because Japan is a safe place."

"I think these kids agreed it is tedious. However, as much as they looked fine, these kids are always in a state of fear for their safety and survival." Shizuka said. "Any skill that allows them to stay alive longer, they will learn it. Some will be unhappy, some half-heartedly, but they will try and learn it."

"They hope to get strong enough so that we can return home. Back to Chiba."

"I see." The Officer stood up and bowed. "Once again, thanks for the assistance. Even if some of us are unfriendly, I hope you didn't take offense."

"Likewise, thanks for the help, Officers." Shizuka bowed back. "Although you were originally from the Special Unit, correct?"

The Officer seemed taken aback, clearly wary of Shizuka's assessment.

The Special Unit, also known as Special Assault Police, was a branch of elite police officers specifically established to deal with terrorism and gun crime. In some ways, they were the Japanese equivalent of the Western SWAT.

"Why would you say that, Sensei?"

"Your fighting skills are leagues above the other Officers, and the level of skill you displayed in handling a semi-automatic pistol is rare. Especially since all the Police officers in Minakami were issued M60s instead of SIG P230s." Shizuka crossed her arms. "And whether it was your firing stance, body language, or expression, those don't belong to average cops whose primary training is de-escalation and nonlethal capture."

"From there, there are only two possible ways to explain it: either you were from the military or the SAT."

The Officer sighed.

"I was originally part of Gunma Riot Police and got a recommendation to enter SAT. However, I had to stop for personal reasons I could not disclose, and got myself transferred to Minakami. In other words, you could say I had the training but never officially part of SAT."

"I see. I'm sorry to hear that." Shizuka offered a hand. "Only through honesty can we build close cooperation. I hope you understand, Officer."

"Likewise, Sensei." The Officer shook hands with her. "But your way of fighting and sharp observation told me your background isn't ordinary, either."

"I used to have a fiancee in the special forces. Our engagement fell off, but I learned a few useful skills from him." Shizuka grinned. "Which includes military martial arts."

In other words, the art of killing with bare hands. It was something that ordinary martial arts students wouldn't learn.

Not until decades into their journey. After they reach a certain level of patience, maturity, and wisdom.

Shizuka's gun skills barely reach one-third of her martial mastery. However, she understood enough to spot the subtle difference in forms and stances.

Of course, Shizuka didn't have to tell this guy how much of a delinquent she was in her student days. That was too embarrassing and largely irrelevant.

"From now on, you can just call me Aikawa. If you need any help from the Minakami Police, I will be your contact. And if we need your help, I'll talk to you on their behalf."

Shizuka wordlessly nodded.

"Oh, and one more thing. Please don't shoot a bear or a wild hog with an airsoft gun. These two animals are too thick-skinned and thick-furred to care about a little sting. Worst case scenario, it would anger them."

"There are wild boars around here?"

"Well, it wasn't their natural habitat, for sure. But with the zombie outbreak, we can't be too sure." Aikawa laughed. "Please be careful."

"Thanks for the caution."

And with that, the Officer left.

Special NPC - Officer Aikawa Fuyumi (28)
Fighting: 8/8 (minimum)
Shooting: 8/8 (est)
A young member of Minakami Police, formerly in the Riot Police unit, flunked out of SAT training but retained most of the skill. Seemed to be assigned to watch over the Chiba survivors. Hides most of his skill. Might lie about his background.

All students of the camp
Shooting Skill 0/8 -> 2/8

"He's kinda suspicious, isn't he?" Yumiko remarked. "Even for a Policeman, he's a bit too nice and tolerating."

While most Officers are taught to be kind and patient, they're often rigid about rules and discipline.

"Duh, what kind of normal-ass Japanese cop would teach underage kids to handle realistic guns." Hachiman snarked. "Dude is a red flag."

"Red flag is a good term. I wonder if Officer Aikawa was sent as a honey trap." Hina laughed. "He looks more like a former boyband member than a police in his late twenties."

"Well, he IS remarkably handsome." Zaimokuza pointed. "Please don't fall for his trick, Sensei."

"As if, you brats." Shizuka awkwardly grinned.

She would admit it was tempting, though. All these romantic failures... and Shizuka hardly learned anything from them.

DAY 4 02:00 PM -> DAY 5 00:00 AM

DAY 5 START

The night shift was honestly the easiest. While the pitch-black environment can be terrifying, the isolated area makes it easy to detect early threats simply by listening to the noise.

The bell traps will warn them of anything more dangerous than rodents moving around.

So Shizuka, Hachiman, and Saika wasted their time making Gundam models they took for free from the konbini.

"Man, if only we can log in and play Gundam battle," Zaimokuza whined.

"We really need to hit some electronic stores next time." Saika laughed.

Hachiman didn't say anything and focused on building the stuff in his hands.

Shizuka occasionally heard barking or screeching, but those sounds became a part of their environment. The appearance of rats, feral cats, and feral dogs changed things.

"Once the rats are gone, the cats and dogs might migrate," Shizuka said. "As long as we don't feed the cats and dogs, they won't stay around."

Some of the kids are very much tempted to do so. It was almost a reflex for them to be kind to cats and dogs. However, Shizuka reminded them they could barely care for themselves, much less a pet.

"But if one of them stayed, and there are indications they were originally pets, we can let it hang around."

A former pet feral would have collars on them. Most likely, they got vaccinated in some way and less erratic.

Around four in the morning, people who participated in the night duty decided to use the remainder of the hours for practice. Shizuka thought it was interesting, so she decided to watch over them.

Saika, Yui, and Hina practiced the fitness drills Shizuka taught to improve their pelvic strength and durability. Since they're not as athletic as the others, it's normal for them to feel somewhat inferior.

Shizuka decided to oversee their practice, though it didn't seem they needed any advice. They practiced diligently and true to form.

Meanwhile, Hachiman and Zaimokuza taught Komachi and Taishi the art of Ukemi. The art of falling down (safely).

The Soubu students all have martial arts experience solely because of their electives. While their martial skills are abysmal, they mastered the bare minimum of knowledge on falling with minimal injuries.

Taishi and Komachi, however, never learned that. That is why Hachiman taught them this in the last few days. And they're showing progress.

They're putting the looted mattress to good use. Obviously, it was to prevent an injury even if someone made a mistake.

Saki trusted them enough and instead went for solo patrol along the main road. She purposely avoids the eastern backroad because it's close to the forest, and she might encounter wild and feral animals instead.

While they don't have the strength and resilience of zombies, their speed and number make them equally dangerous. And while it's unlikely, Shizuka did warn them about the non-zero risk of rabies.

"There's absolutely nothing within 200 m from the camp," Saki said. "I killed a few lone zombies in the farmland south from here, but other than that, there was nothing."

"We really lucked in when it comes to choice of shelter," Shizuka nodded. "You should rest."

"Nah." Saki snorted. "I owed someone a practice session."

Much to Shizuka's surprise, said practice session was requested by Hachiman. And it was a restrained sparring.

Hachiman was using an empty boxcutter to fight against Saki while she was defending herself and attacking him with bare hands. The idea was simple: he had to stab her head to get a win, but she had no such restriction.

In ordinary knife drills, Hachiman would have been at a massive advantage because most stabbing can be dangerous. Defending against knife attacks with bare hands is prohibitively hard. While some experts said it was possible, most people can't master enough skills to be relevant in a knife fight.

However, Hachiman only has Saki's face and neck as valid targets, while Saki's restriction was to hold back on her strength and avoid vital areas.

Essentially, they treated each other as zombies. The strict conditions removed Hachiman's advantage as an armed person. In fact, it made him a punching bag.

But his face told Shizuka he wasn't discouraged. Saki's face was bruised slightly from the spot where Hachiman stabbed her. She was wearing goggles for safety because of how risky the training method was.

"You two are a crazy bunch, you know that?" Shizuka cringed. "This is what they were doing last few nights?"

"Honestly, I'm pretty worried at first," Yui told Shizuka. "But I think this is the only way for them to get stronger in a safe manner. Especially Hikki."

"However, SakiSaki is much more skilled and self-assured now," Hina said. "No doubt that she became even more lethal in combat."

Afterwards, they proceed to practice shooting drills. This time, Shizuka participated herself instead of just watching.

Komachi, as usual, cooked the breakfast and lunch for everyone. The breakfast was warm and fresh, though the lunch needed to be reheated. Hachiman and Saki would help her as kitchen assistants because cooking for thirteen people could be tedious.

"Why do so many of you stay awake overnight?" Tobe yawned after he got woken up for a change of shift. "I'll be hella lonely in the morning."

"Haha, it's not like we'll do anything big. Well, hopefully, we don't need to." Hina told him. "I'm going to sleep as soon as I get the food digested."

Sleeping immediately after eating is unhealthy, indeed. And so, when the clock hit 06:00 AM, Shizuka went to sleep in her hammock. While it wasn't as comfortable as a bed, Shizuka felt safer tucked in.

Fighting skill increased:
Kawasaki Saki 7/8 -> 8/8

CHAPTER 8 END
DAY 5 06:00 AM -> DAY 5 01:00 PM

Shizuka was woken up earlier than intended when she heard the roaring sounds of a helicopter propeller flying close. No, it was beyond close.

The damn thing actually hovered just above their parking space!

"Which son of a bitch is causing problems today?" She groaned, briefly sat on her hammock, and wore her leather gloves and brand-new shoes.

"Sensei..."

One by one, the sleeping students woke up and did the same thing before walking out to see the commotion.

The helicopter was heading to Chibamura, most likely about to land in the parking area of the sky resort.

"Let's check it out."

Pretty much everyone geared up, and though they didn't wear winter clothes because of the high heat in the afternoon, they still wore helmets and gloves and carried their weapons with them.

The Pilot jumped from their seats and scanned around. He didn't look armed, which put the group at ease as they approached calmly and openly.

"Soubu summer camp group?!" The Pilot asked.

"Yes."

Could it be the mythical and unexpected rescue?! Shizuka kept her composure, but the kids weren't so calm.

"Is Yukinoshita Yukino-san and Hayama Hayato-san here?"

Hearing that, Shizuka's heart sank. The helicopter was small, likely used for private air charter most of the time. It doesn't even HAVE a copilot seat, which says a lot about how many passengers it can carry.

It was the helicopter equivalent of a dinky Cessna.

"Yes, I'm Hayama Hayato." Hayato stepped forth. " This is Yukinoshita Yukino."

"I was contracted to pick you up." The Pilot said. "It was a hail mary attempt. Thankfully, you are still here."

"Just this one small helicopter?" Yumiko asked. "Are you making a round trip or what?"

"It was not for us," Saki said. "It was for them."

Yumiko's eyes couldn't be stretched any wider in realization. The helicopter was here only for Yukino and Hayato, and only them. The rest of the group did not matter in the slightest.

"I apologize for the inconvenience, but it was exactly that. I was told to pick up Yukinoshita-san and Hayama-kun. As for the rest of the group, I could not take responsibility." The Pilot deeply bowed. "I sincerely apologize."

Who knows whether he was genuinely sorry or merely being polite? It didn't matter.

"Go back," Yukino said as she turned her back. "Unless Hayama-kun wants to go, then you can take him."

"Eh? What are you talking about, Yukino... shita?!" Hayato stammered, but that slip-up wouldn't have gone unnoticed.

He almost called her by her first name, and the helicopter was there to pick them up simultaneously. It means they have histories together. And their families are likely very close.

Hayato clicked his teeth.

"I'm also not going," Hayato told him angrily. "Never again."

While what Yukino and Hayato said was irrational, there are good reasons for them to be like that.

"Your elder sister is unaccounted for, and Representative Yukinoshita is hospitalized." The Pilot said. "Please don't be childish."

That actually stopped Yukino and made Hayato horrified.

"Father... is ill?" Yukino gasped. "And Neesan is missing?!"

"Working together to mitigate the damage caused by this disaster took a toll on him, and he got overworked. Not to mention, one of his daughters is missing." The Pilot explained. "I will be frank, looking at this place, Chiba is a warzone in comparison. That was why you were left here to survive on your own. However, when Representative Yukinoshita fell, your mother changed her mind."

"Go back, Yukinon." Yui grabbed Yukino's hand to soothe the tension. "We're fine on our own."

"Yuigahama-san..."

Hachiman was disturbed to see how hard Yukino tried not to cry. But he strengthened his resolve and told her. "It's not about privilege. It's about not wasting your only chance. Make a decision for no one but yourself, Yukinoshita."

"Alright." Yukino was only half convinced, but she nodded. "I will rejoin you someday. I promise."

"Watch it." Yui grinned. "We'll be as strong as you when we meet again!"

"Do you have any idea about the other families?" Shizuka asked.

"I have the detailed written note here." The Pilot said. "Summarized, almost everyone in Chiba city can be traced. The exception was Ebina-san's parents. We still haven't heard anything about them. The Hikigaya family went to the Chiba countryside to avoid the zombie wave. As for the Kawasaki family..."

"What?" Saki barked.

"Your parents survived, but your little sister..."

Saki almost dropped to her knees, and Taishi and Komachi caught her for support. How could she not be heartbroken? Her little sister, six years old, had perished of the disease.

"As for Hayama-san, your father and mother work tirelessly in the hospital. But they are doing fine, just worried about your safety."

Hayato smiled.

"In that case, Yukinoshita," Hayato said. "Go without me."

"Hayama-kun?" Yukino was surprised. "Why?"

"I'm their only son. As long as I stay here, they shouldn't be too worried. But your father is ill, and Haruno-san is missing. If you don't go, you might regret it forever." Hayato's voice cracked even as he smiled serenely and looked at his anxious friends.

"And I'm not abandoning my friends ever again. I ran away too many times to count, not this time." Hayato continued. "If anyone wanted to take my seat, please do so."

"We're a bit cautious about fuel, so if you're light enough, we might just be able to take three girls with me." The Pilot said. "But three boys would probably be pushing it."

"Of course not me, crazy talk." Zaimokuza scoffed. "With my size, I count as two people."

Hachiman and Komachi glanced at each other. Then Komachi spoke. "Our parents are in the countryside. No point returning to Chiba City, especially if the city is in danger."

"My parents are still missing, so I wouldn't go either." Hina sighed. She's a tough lady, Shizuka admits.

"What about the others? Totsuka?"

"I'm..." Saika grimaced. "I... please don't ask me that."

He must be quite torn between his filial piety and comradeship. There's not an ounce of malice in his bones.

Looking at the strained Tobe and Yumiko, this clique probably felt more conflicted about separating. Of course, they wanted to go home. However, they don't want to leave.

"Kawasaki?"

Saki and Taishi were, justifiably, still crying. They got hammered with the explicit news of their family member's death.

Hayama crouched and patted the Kawasaki siblings. "I know it's hard to stomach. Do you want to return to Chiba right away?"

"Hayato!" Yumiko called him out. "Are you serious?! This is not the time to play hero! You should go!"

"That's right. It'd be nice if you stayed. But we'd rather you leave!" Tobe assured him.

"Yumiko... Tobe?" Hayato looked at them in disbelief. "Why?"

"None of us is anywhere as lucky! If your reason for not leaving is because you feel bad, then screw off." Saki yelled. "I don't care anymore!"

"Sensei, I'm also carrying some supplies, so please help me take care of it." The Pilot told Shizuka. "I can wait a while, but I'd rather we go as soon as possible."

"I see."

There were various briefcases of many shapes and sizes being unloaded. And they were heavy, too. Hopefully, they'll be useful.

Either way, Yukinoshita Yukino will be leaving. That leaves one passenger seat, maybe two.

Chapter 9
With a heavy heart, Shizuka made a decision.

"Hayama, you really don't want to go home?" Shizuka asked.

"I actually want to go home. I really do." Hayato said. "But I want to go home with everyone, together. It would eat me from the inside to go home alone."

"Alright. In that case... Kawasaki siblings, you should go." Shizuka decided to intervene. "Unless anyone else objects."

"Sensei?"

"Everyone is grieving in one way or another, but your parents might need you the most right now." Shizuka patted Saki. "And you can protect them. Because you're strong, that's why."

"Taishi-kun, don't be disheartened just because you're weaker. You're not even fifteen and have room to grow. Hone your skill and get stronger later."

"Yes." Taishi grimaced, then looked at Komachi.

"Just go, idiot. If my parents are in Chiba city, I'll take the seat for myself." Komachi waved and grinned.

"By the way, we're dropping two sets of radios here." The Pilot informed. "Once you install the high-strength satellite radio, it should be possible for you to establish communication with us in Chiba."

"Really?!" Yui gasped. "Does that mean..."

"We can still talk to each other," Yukino concluded.

"Aside from that, there are twelve units of UHF radio which you can use locally. 5-kilometer range without obstruction, and around 3 km or less in the woods and cities. We give you a list of frequencies used by the military, police, and government. I suggest avoiding them as much as possible because they can track you and cause unnecessary problems."

"I'll help you set the radio station so... if anyone else wants to write a letter or something, you still have time." The Pilot nodded. "If you don't, you can help us."

They decided to install the satellite radio and had a late lunch. The satellite radio set is sizable, covering the entire table, not to mention laptop-operated. There's not enough room in the Glamping house, and they had to install it in the catering restaurant.

"House clear! We're climbing!"

Tobe and Hayato climbed the roof of the nearby small, two-story apartments to install the antenna. It was ideal to mount the antennas on because it was the tallest building in the entire area.

The satellite radio used a small radar dish, which was a pain to carry upwards. Nevertheless, they managed to secure it. Then, it's time for the second antenna.

They used a four-meter steel pipe with an anti-rust coating to raise the UHF radio antenna position. With the increased line of sight, they could talk with people within 7-8 km down the road.

"Hmm." The Pilot remarked. "If you can install the repeater in the mountain, it should be possible to cover the entire foot with just the handheld."

"Well, after we've done this once, doing it again would be easy," Shizuka said. "We'd have to ask permission, though."

Everyone waited with bated breath as they turned on the satellite radio communication system for the first time, and it connected successfully, in theory.

"ARI transports here. Am I connected, over?" The Pilot asked.

"[ARI transports, we heard you, over]." Came the reply. "[Can you confirm the safety of everyone]?"

"10 Soubu students and 2 Middle-school students, as well as Hiratsuka-sensei. All accounted for." The Pilot said. "Both Yukinoshita Yukino and Hayama Hayato are safe and sound."

"[Thank heavens. We'll inform Yukinoshita-san and Dr. Hayama about it]."

"A sec. Can you please record a message?" Hayato requesed. "This is Hayama Hayato speaking. Please send the recording to Dr. Hayama for me."

"[Record a message? Right. You may start now]."

Hayato looked briefly at his friends, then began talking. "Father, Mother, if you hear this, I'm alright. Sensei cared for us from beginning to end and taught us to survive. We're camping away from the city, so zombies aren't a frequent problem. We ate, slept, and exercised enough that I never felt healthier. The clean air in the mountains really helped."

"It doesn't feel that different from a normal camping event. I know. I am selfish, but I'll stay with my friends." Hayato's voice wavered. "I have decided to stay, and if the situation improves, we will surely return to Chiba. Together."

Hayato concluded. "Please take frequent breaks. I'm in a safer place than you do. And I know you're trying to save as many people as possible, but you should care for yourself. Otherwise, I'd be sad."

"I will see you again in Chiba later. I promise. Hayama Hayato, over and out."

And with that, Hayato backed away from the microphone.

"ARI transports here, you're still there, Operator?"

"[Yes, ARI transports. Can you confirm who will return with you? Over.]"

"Yukinoshita Yukino, Kawasaki Saki, and Kawasaki Taishi. Please inform them of our arrival within two hours. Over."

"[Yukinoshita Yukino, Kawasaki Saki, and Kawasaki Taishi. We will notify their parents shortly. Thank you for the service, ARI transports.]"

"ARI transports, over and out." The Pilot concluded and pushed the microphone toggle. "For anyone here who wants to talk to your parents, please use the satellite phone instead. That means we can establish private communication uninterrupted."

"Thank you for the help." Shizuka saluted.

Yukino, Saki, and Taishi bid farewell to others. Among them, Taishi was the one who looked most regretful.

"Thank you for taking care of us, Sensei." The three bowed at Shizuka.

After gathering letters from everyone, Yukino and the Kawasaki siblings boarded the helicopter. The aircraft took off smoothly and disappeared behind the mountain.

"Man, they really left us huh." Tobe laughed. "Are you sure you won't regret it, Hayato?"

"Not in a hundred years." Hayato punched him. "Let's go. We still have things to unpack."

Chiefly, the most precious supply they got was a whole-ass safe filled with hundreds of medicines. 50 doses of cefixime and 50 doses of clarithromycin. In addition, they sent tramadol tablets, which are considered a restricted drug as an opioid.

This means there is a risk of addiction to prolonged use.

"The instructions here say you take the Tramadol with Ibuprofen." Saika read out. "Only for severe pain use. Do not abuse."

"Other than that, there are epinephrine shots," Shizuka said. "These would be our lifesaving treasure, literally. Between the dangers of zombies and the summer heat, any of us could get a cardiac arrest."

Shizuka doesn't know if any of her students know, but it can be abused to give them a power boost in fights. However, the consequences are dire. That's why Shizuka would not talk about it unless she's forced to.

Resources gained (Medical Supply):
Antibiotics (100, Medicine)
Strong Painkiller (30, Medicine)
Adrenaline shot (20, Medicine)

"No wonder they're giving us an entire safe. Gold couldn't pay the content in weight." Yumiko jibed. "Sensei, should we separate the content? They're either too precious or too dangerous for casual use. Just looking at that tramadol bottle made me ill."

"We'll store the tramadol and epinephrine shots in the safe, haul the antibiotics out into our drug cabinet," Shizuka said. "While it's precious, antibiotics cannot be abused."

Shizuka was trusted with the safe code. At this point, the kids trusted her enough because Shizuka never thought of taking the helicopter seat for herself.

For emergencies, two epinephrine shots were taken out in case they had to go on a dangerous mission.

"Radio unloaded and installed, medicine secured, and now..."

The last case.

"What the actual FUCK."

The kids all jumped away the moment they opened it. The last case was actually filled with weapons!

There is a shotgun with a silencer mounted, as well as several cardboard boxes of ammunition. Shizuka read the instructions as well as the documents that came with it.

Namely, the gun permit and owner certification. Which Hiratsuka never had. The way Japanese gun ownership works is that you have to take a licensing test for every new gun you buy.

In other words, this license is dubiously legal at best and morally a sham. However, it was approved by both the Chiba Prefectural government and the Chiba Police. It has legitimate legal power to protect Shizuka from the strict Japanese law regarding firearms use.

No doubt, this was done by the Yukinoshita family.

"Well, I am legally a gun owner now." She showed the certificate to the kids. "At least we have one."

"Are you sure that's legal?" Hachiman quipped.

"Won't that just bait zombies in our direction?" Hina questioned.

"To a degree, sure. But the gun and the ammo are special." Shizuka said as she put a device on the table nearby, knelt down, loaded the shotgun with one shell, and aimed for their practice target.

The kids all closed their ears, anticipating a deafening boom.

Safety off, firing.

*DZOOP*

The sound was not quiet by any means but not painfully loud. It sounds like an engine knock from a large car or a falling metal canister. It was most definitely leagues more quiet than the police pistol.

"Wait, that was it?" Yumiko blinked. "That doesn't even SOUND like a gunshot."

"It is not Hollywood silent, but it won't cause everyone to go deaf." Shizuka smiled. "Because it has a silencer and used a subsonic ammo."

"Ah." Yui realized. "There was no sonic boom!"

"I'm shocked you even know what sonic boom is." Hachiman joked, much to Yui's ire.

"This means I only have a 30-meter effective range, tops." Shizuka pulled her earplugs out and turned on the safety. "However, we can now use the gun without calling an entire village's worth of zombies on our ass."

The kids looked at each other and then shouted in excitement.

"There are bows and crossbows here," Hina said. "Er... looks dubious to me."

"Eh, beggar can't be chooser." Hachiman peered. "Looks very easy to use, but power-wise..."

After a brief test against zombies south of their camp, they discovered the bow works well to at least 20 meters... assuming they can hit! Archery isn't easy, especially without anyone teaching you how.

"The crossbow is easy to use, but the power is left to be desired," Hina said. "Even with a headshot, you only have a 50% chance of killing a zombie within 20 meters. It's only 100% deadly within 10 meters."

"At least against zombies, it works better as an assassination weapon." Hachiman agreed. "You really don't want to reload a crossbow while a zombie is running toward you."

It takes 2-3 seconds for a zombie to cross the 10-meter range with a casual sprint. So, Hachiman's assessment is not wrong.

"The bow is fine. 20-meter killing is not a problem. Using it needs training, though," Saika whined. "Using a gun is much, much, much easier. Worse, the skill doesn't translate well."

"Archery is a commitment issue." Shizuka sighed. "A gun and a crossbow had more similarity than a bow and crossbow."

It takes a few months to raise an army with guns and crossbows. It takes years or decades to raise an army with bows and arrows. Nevertheless, getting something usable quickly with diligent training and proper guidance.

"The real game changers are these," Hayato said as he pulled a gray, silvery shirt out of the box. "This shirt is bite-resistant, so it would help us survive zombie bites and claws whenever we can't use our winter gear."

"With Hina's homemade neck protection, this should be helpful." Yumiko smiled.

PROTIP:
A character may learn "Archery" separately from "Shooting" skills. Archery skill is used only for bows. When using a crossbow, the "Shooting" skill is used instead.

Skill learned:
Hikigaya Hachiman: Archery 1/8
Yuigahama Yui: Archery 1/8
Ebina Hina: Archery 1/8
Totsuka Saika: Archery 1/8

Gear obtained (Weapon supply):
Beretta A300 Silenced (T3 Shotgun) - A semi-automatic shotgun with a custom threaded barrel and heavy-duty suppressor. It can load three 2.75 or 3-inch shells.
Subsonic buckshot shell (T3 Shotshell, 60) - 2.75" shell. Fires 12 buckshot downrange at 1050 fps for heavily reduced noise. Has a lower range than a standard shell.
Recurve bow (T2 Bow, 4) - Recurve bow made of steel riser and fiberglass limb. Claims up to 40 lb pull at maximum draw, which was quite heavy for a beginner.
Fiberglass arrows (T1 Arrows, 120) - Cheap-looking arrows made from 500 spine fiberglass and a steel tip.
Pistol crossbow (T1 Pistol, 6) - Self-cocking crossbow with 80 lb pull. Lethal at close range.
Light aluminum bolts (T1 Bolts, 300) - Value pack bolts for a pistol crossbow.
Hunting knife (T2 weapon/tool, 4) - A knife for butchering game animals. Better than a kitchen knife but not as good as a combat knife.
Bite-resistant shirt (T2 Armor) - Long-sleeved shirt worn by medical workers to handle crazed and panicked patients. Doesn't protect against blunt force or stabbing. (50% bite damage reduction, 15% slash damage reduction)

"If we want heavy firepower, we gotta strike the sporting equipment shop somehow," Zaimokuza said aloud. "These are nothing but crutches for us to learn with."

"The learning part is important, though," Saika argued. "I am glad we were handed out beginner equipment."

"That's true." Shizuka used the hunting knife to unpack four blocks of archery foam target. "That's why they even added these into the package."

The heavy foam target allowed the bolt and the arrows to be reused multiple times during training. Otherwise, they have to be conservative about it.

...

Although the mood was much better than predicted, there was still some lingering tension, especially with Hayama's clique. Shizuka more or less knew the broad strokes but never heard the detail itself.

Hayama Hayato's behavior was strange to them. Hayama was willing to share it, however.

"The truth is, Yukinoshita siblings and I used to be close," Hayato explained. "Our family had good relationships with each other. We basically spent most of our childhood together."

"Haruno-san was well-liked, but Yukino, that was not the case. She was talented but shy and awkward. And some people began to hate her for selfish reasons, mostly envy and jealousy."

"One day in our last year of elementary, some students blamed her for making a mess in the class. I knew the truth. I knew she was innocent." Hayato sighed. "I was, however, too afraid to say anything. So I stayed quiet even though Yukino silently pleaded for help."

The sheer amount of disbelief everyone had at that statement was hard to measure.

"I'm a coward and a betrayer. This is a fact that still haunts me to this day. And I hate to be reminded of it." Hayato gritted his teeth. "And I vow to never again repeat that mistake."

"Yukino spent three years aboard afterward, only returning to Japan and enrolling in Soubu High. By then, she had changed. She became cold and isolated, unable to trust anyone. It was my fault."

"That's why you were super mad during our workplace tip fiasco." Tobe nodded. "I can brush it off as a high school student, but..."

"If I was in her position as twelve years old, I'd be beyond mad." Hina bluntly remarked. "I'll be heartbroken."

When your childhood sweetheart betrayed you for clout, that's a life-changing experience.

"I'll go apeshit and become a delinquent." Tobe pointed himself. "Well, I did have a messed up middle school experience, so..."

"I'm not asking to be forgiven, nor do I want you to put your trust in me," Hayato told his friends as he stood up. "I just want you to know my selfish reason for staying."

As Hayato told them his childhood story, Yumiko was the only one who could not say anything. Shizuka knew that Yumiko, deep down, could not defend Hayato whatsoever.

But her affection for him surpassed any objective rationality. Yumiko could only cry silently when she was out of sight of everyone.

The helicopter arrival certainly brought some attention. The curious and desperate people came in expecting help, only to be put off by the empty parking lot.

Even the police came to visit and started asking questions. Shizuka, of course, didn't tell them about the shotgun. Not yet, anyway. Even if Shizuka had the legal documents needed, it was only uncontested at the prefectural level.

In other words, if Gunma people want to pile shit on Shizuka, they would do it with ease. Shizuka needs better reps with them before she can freely run around with a firearm on her back.

"You're saying they're here to take some people and give supplies," Aikawa asked as he took notes. "Any indication they will return?"

"Not particularly. If they're coming back, they would tell us." Shizuka responded honestly. "As a matter of fact, the implication was clear. They barely have enough fuel to return to Chiba with three passengers."

"I see. If they come again, please do so in the designated helipad." Aikawa grinned. "Wouldn't want the risk of a forest fire from a failed landing."

This cheeky son of a bitch...

In fairness, Shizuka could see the rationale. Using the designated helipad in the city would be safer, and the locals would bother their camp less because it was part of the dam control station area.

Therefore, it would attract less attention.

"Thank you for the advice, Aikawa san." Shizuka grinned mischievously. "Anything else that concerns us?"

"Oh yes, as if we didn't have enough problems." Aikawa put his notebook in his pocket. "I was told that a local biker gang had been causing problems all over the area recently."

"A biker gang?"

"Yes. They don't dare to attack the two evacuation zones directly, but I've been informed by the victims. They would attack small enclaves and commit robbery, sexual assault, and possibly murder."

Oh, it's THOSE kinds of assholes.

"Your camp has large members and is heavily armed. Rationally, they would be cautious. But your camp members gained notoriety among the survivors in Minakami, so if they want to conquer the lawless zones..."

"They have to step on our corpse," Hachiman commented. Which sounded edgy for him, but unfortunately, the truth. "As long as we exist, the rest of small enclaves will try to resist."

Them coming to attack us is not about if. It's about when.

"Just in time when we lost two of our strongest members." Tobe clenched his fist. "Bastards."

"To be honest, I would advise you to move from here. However, I also understand that this area is a great place to escape from zombies. In the end, you decide. Hiratsuka-sensei."

Moving out was not something Hiratsuka hadn't thought of before. However, unlike before, it will take some time because they have to uninstall the radio equipment and satellite phones.

Without them, communicating with people from Chiba would be impossible.

"You heard him, folks," Shizuka said. "I want to hear what you think."

"This place is relatively defensible and isolated. If a fight occurs, we have the range advantage." Hayato said.

"I agree. It is hard to think of a better place to stay." Yumiko agreed.

"Nevertheless, it would not hurt to have a backup option," Hachiman argued.

"Agreed. We need a place where we can run." Yui huffed. "Medicine and gear are easy to carry. Food and fuel, we can abandon. But our radios... we cannot afford to lose it."

"How about we start looking for an alternate campsite?" Hina asked. "Whether we should move out or not, we can decide later."

"I agree with Ebina-chan. We can't have too many options, can we?" Tobe hollered.

"I see no flaws in that argument. I agree we need to find a backup site." Zaimokuza said.

"But also, about the radio... hear me out." Saika proposed. "We need to make it mobile."

"Mobile?"

"We need to put it in a car," Saika said. "That way, we would never lose it."

"Oh." Hachiman perked up. "Basically, Saika want to make a mobile HQ."

"That sounds awesome." Komachi jumped. "Like SWAT or FBI trucks from the movies, right?"

"You say that. But we only have this minibus and a small truck." Shizuka sighed. "We need a bigger car. DID YOU SEE ONE?"

Ironic. The parking area north of this place is filled with cars. It's just that all of them are tiny kei cars and trucks.

"I can help you get one." Aikawa intertwined his fingers. "But the police will need help for this one."

Oh, come on. It is not going to be easy dealing with his request. Shizuka knows for sure.

"As you know, at the moment, the police cannot use our guns. We're not the only ones, however." Aikawa explained. "The hunters found themselves facing difficulties because their firearms were too loud. Only the airgun hunters can breathe at the best of times."

"Solving the issue with a shotgun or a rifle is easy. Just put an oil filter on the muzzle." Shizuka joked, knowing the actual suppressors are a much more complicated device. "How you're going to deal with cylinder gaps on the revolver."

Aikawa unrolled a blueprint on the board, showing two clam-like coverings on the Nambu M60's side profile.

"Clamshell seal." Shizuka finally understood. "By covering the cylinder, it would reduce the gas bleed."

"Correct. An engineering student in our evacuation shelter designed it. The problem is we cannot manufacture it with our hands. None of us are skilled enough."

"It has to be machined to exact precision," Tobe clapped his hand in realization. "The factory! The factory has laser cutters and CNC machines!"

"Ah."

Shizuka was reminded of one of the factories they looted back then. One of them was full of metal cutting and machining equipment. The parts they looted were good for fitting and bracing. Though, not much beyond that.

It was full of complex machinery that Tobe could not use due to his lack of knowledge. But for an engineering student, it would be their domain. Especially if they're gifted.

"Is that possible?" Hachiman questioned. "I have the gist of it. It would be a loud process and attract tons of zombies in our direction. But would the clamshell sell work at all?"

"It was not the first time it was done. Some civilians did it privately to varying success. Germany took this to a new level with their PSDR gun system, which was used by the GSG9, their version of Special Assault Police." Shizuka closed her eyes. "But just because it is possible, doesn't mean it would be easy. And even if it worked, it will triple the weight of your gun."

"M60 is not exactly a heavy pistol. Even if it quadruples the weight, the tradeoff would be worth it." Aikawa sighed. "I believe Hiratsuka-sensei understand."

How law worked is beyond the culture of obedience. Even if the average Japanese are unusually law-abiding, it's the small minority that could cause trouble. The biker gang mentioned would be one such example.

The law enforcement, ultimately, still relies on the monopoly of force. At the moment, it's the airgun hunters who are the king. And this cannot be allowed.

"You heard it, folks?" Shizuka asked the students. "Ya dig the mission or what?"

There was a unanimous vote to accept the request.

"While I think Totsuka's idea is ridiculous, having a bigger truck would help us either way," Yumiko said. "Once we have one, we can do anything."

"Agreed." Yui raised her trusty hammer. "Let us help however we can."

"Most excellent." Aikawa was delighted. "When will we start?"

Going in the afternoon would be hazardous for their endurance. They should wait until the sun starts descending while wearing their bite-proof shirt. However, if they wait until tomorrow morning, they can wear winter gear without risking overexhaustion.

Decision. Decision.

Chapter 10 - 1
"We're going at dusk." Shizuka looked at her watch. "Temperature?"

"28 degrees, Sensei!" Yumiko reported. "That's not too high for us. The humidity is the only problem."

"Still can't use winter gear, in that case." Shizuka sighed. "Hayama, are you confident with the strength of the bite-resistant shirt?"

"Absolutely. It was used in many mental hospitals in Japan." Hayato nodded with a serious expression. "My parents won't send us these without reason. If it's against bites and clawing, it would help mitigate the injuries. In fact, it would also protect against knife slash, but it wouldn't do anything against stabbing."

"Perfect," Shizuka said. "We're fighting with summer jackets again! You can wear the winter pants if you want."

"Bueno." Zaimokuza grinned. "To be honest, the protection granted by the winter gear is overrated."

"Well, you have OTHER armor." Hachiman joked. "Unlike the rest of us."

"Hey, no fat shaming!" Zaimokuza protested. "Even if it's true!"

Zaimokuza wasn't that obese, not to the point where his fat could be an extraordinary cushion. Most of his bulk has been actual muscles. Which is why he could overpower multiple zombies at once.

With the absence of Yukino, Zaimokuza might very well be the strongest Soubu fighter now, even more than Tobe.

"That's because the padding used by winter clothing is low density," Hina remarked. "Fabric armor must be made from densely packed layers of cloth. Whether it's a stab-proof vest or bullet-resistant armor, same principle."

"Can you make something better than the winter gear, Ebina?" Shizuka asked.

"Yes," Hina said. "I can make gambeson. But not with hands."

"Gambeson." Shizuka was thoughtful.

Gambeson is a type of cloth armor European soldiers wore in the medieval era. They're made of dozens of layers of linen. Far more protective than winter gear despite being equally bulky. The Samurai had a thinner version of such cloth armor, which they wore under their iron plates.

"Looks like we really need that sewing machine." Yui clenched her hand. "Yumiko is still wounded from yesterday's fight! We need a better armor!"

"It was a brutal fight, but it can't be helped." Yumiko creaked her neck. "I'm fine. Hayato is hurting, as well. Compared to yesterday, we're better off."

"Right. Today's fight is likely to be as intense. Pray that we get more competent allies compared to yesterday." Shizuka said. "Now, let us pack our stuff."

Knowing their base camp was in danger, they decided to work and split their supplies into separate places. They put the most compact stuff in the car baggage space, which includes medicine and powdered drinks.

They transferred half the food supplies into the neighboring apartment, where they installed the antennas. And left the rest in the base camp, especially the perishable food and juices.

The radio equipment was repackaged into the protective case, though the cables and other auxiliaries were left behind.

"Let's go."

Hopefully, the worst-case scenario would not happen. With this in mind, the Soubu group departed to the industrial complex.

As scheduled, they met the police group on the road leading to the factories. Much to their surprise, half the police were packing hard. They were covered from head to toe in armor and carried a shield made of thick polycarbonate plastic.

"Riot gear!" Hachiman shouted. "You literally can't find better equipment to fight against zombies! They're even better than military armor!"

"Uooooh! I want one!" Zaimokuza shouted as well.

"Is that true they're better than military armor, Sensei?" Yumiko was doubtful.

"Yes." Shizuka nodded. "Military armor is designed to primarily defeat bullets and bomb fragments, though recently also developed to defeat various threats."

"But let me ask you something. What difference is there between hordes of zombies and a crazed, rioting mob?" Shizuka rhetorically asked. "There isn't any. Except zombies are more stupid but more persistent. You cannot demoralize zombies. It's kill or be killed."

"Riot gear is designed to be optimal against sharp objects and blunt impact. Knives, baseball bats, thrown rocks, and angry humanoid-shaped threats. Riot gear is the perfect anti-zombie equipment."

"However, riot gears are heavy. Just the armor and helmet alone, fifteen kilograms. Now add the shield, add four or five kilograms. Unless you're extremely fit, you're cooked."

That was why only half the police force was wearing riot gear. The other half seemed to wear SAT equipment, resembling typical SWAT officers from the movies.

"SAT gears?!" Shizuka was surprised. "You got reinforcement?"

One of the Riot gear-wearing police revealed himself to be Aikawa. He usually looked slim and shady, but the gears made him unrecognizable.

"No," Aikawa said. "Instead, HQ dumped unused equipment on us, including a huge stockpile of 38 special ammo and two shotguns."

"Gunma Police Department survived the onslaught." Shizuka grimaced. "And they're holding the fort."

"Yes." Aikawa sighed. "They could not spare anyone. It is up to us to arm ourselves."

"Did someone have the ability to do so?"

"He-hello!" A young-looking man who looked in his early twenties waved. His hair was tied to a bun, which looked dorky. But Shizuka would consider it a merit to keep himself tidy. "My name is Satou Yoshirou. I'm a fourth-year student from Saitama Engineering University and interned in a weapons factory before, so I'm quite well-versed in firearm design and operation."

"You want to create a PSDR based on Nambu M60?" Shizuka asked.

"Yes. I already have the design on my computer. The maths added up, and the design should work. In theory." Satou confidently said. "I could not promise to make the parts up to specification, but the police are desperate for help."

In other words, he might not have the necessary skills to manufacture it. All because of lack of experience.

"I can see that." Shizuka scoffed. "We ain't working for free, though."

Aikawa pointed at the other massive factory next door. "Did you see that giant building? That place converts truck chassis into industrial machines."

"Ah."

No wonder it was huge. It was a factory that handled truck rebuilding operations.

"If we clean this area, you can get your truck." Aikawa closed his visor. "We'll take the lead."

"Okay," Shizuka said as the Soubu kids pulled their fresh bows and crossbows. "On our mark."

The kids already feel more confident. Unlike evacuation site volunteers, the police are more trained and experienced to handle the situation. The loss of one of their comrades motivated them to be more fierce.

After babysitting muscular men yesterday, reliable adults are a breath of fresh air.

The initial zombie horde was caught off guard when a dozen bolts and arrows struck them. Unfortunately, only a few shots squarely hit their head. Even shots to the neck were useless.

As the horde reacted, the four officers formed a shield wall to hold the tide. A loud thud ensued as the two groups collided.

The police pushed the horde with all their might, throwing four zombies to their back. Shizuka and Tobe took the initiative to drag two zombies from the blob.

"PUSH IT!" The Police Chief shouted. "KEEP PUSHING!"

*WHAM* their shield met yet another group of zombies and stopped their charge.

One zombie screeched, but it was dead in Komachi's hands before it could recover, courtesy of two shots from her nail gun. Another zombie fell, and Hachiman pulled his trusty screwdriver out.

Hayato and Yumiko maneuvered faster than they were yesterday, no longer burdened by the stuffy winter gear and with a new pair of shoes. They could dodge successive attacks and tripped a couple of zombies before finishing them off.

Even Yui, Saika, and Hina, the second weakest members of the group, could stand their ground and fight zombies one by one.

When a zombie was about to bite Hayato, he used his left-hand tonfa to stop it. Although his arm felt some pain, it wasn't much, and he cracked the zombie's skill with his right-hand tonfa.

It was all thanks to the new gloves and resistant shirt.

Zaimokuza went wild and swung his sledgehammer like a madman. Unfortunately, it meant his attack wasn't accurate enough to be an instant kill, even if he threw zombies left and right.

"Zaimokuza! Stop wasting energy, moron!" Yumiko yelled as she used her crowbar end to stab the zombie Hayato restrained. "Focus! You're the strongest in the group!"

"Ah!" Zaimokuza stopped and took a step back.

Komachi stepped back from the fray and focused on using her crossbow to take on the enemies.

"Headshotting zombies are dang near impossible!" Komachi shouted. "So annoying! They're too fast!"

"If it was that easy, the military would mop the entire city," Hachiman commented as he let off another arrow, which unfortunately nicked the ear of a zombie instead of the head.

"Unfortunately, we're not blessed with slow, shambling zombies." Saika laughed before ducking to dodge a zombie lunge. "Whoops!"

Worse since bolts and arrows don't move as fast or as accurately as modern bullets. The chances of missing because of miscalculation are higher.

"It's alright! Keep shooting!" Yumiko cheered up. "Go! Go! Go!"

"GROWL!"

Tobe used his helmet to headbutt the zombie and then used his pipe to crush the neck when it fell. "Either way, as we stay focused, we can win!"

Not only could they weather more damage than before, but their new gears helped to increase their offensive power and evasion. That is the difference between fighting almost naked and fighting in armor.

Of course, having the near-invincible allies in the form of Riot-armored police helped a lot. While their ginormous polycarbonate shield limited their attack strength and range, they were borderline untouchable.

Even as cracks began to form all over the surface, their shield managed to hold.

Even though they lost Yukino and Saki, their fighting strength was much higher than yesterday.

"What?!" The police chief was surprised when a zombie managed to shatter his shield with a punch. Granted, it already took a beating. Only a section of the shield broke, but still, it was shocking to experience.

"Careful! The ones with glowing eyes are dangerous!"

Its movement was fast, superhuman in everyone's eyes, befitting its muscular, half-naked appearance. Each of its punches rang on the shield like a sledgehammer, forcing the chief to step away before the shield pulverized.

What a strange male zombie!

"Chief! Take my shield!" Aikawa threw his shield at the Police Chief. "Come on, you bastard!"

The zombie strangely reacted and chiefly dodged! No zombies ever dodged an attack before!

"IT DODGED?!"

"You guys, be careful! I'm taking this one myself!" Shizuka dashed.

It wasn't as if the zombie was doing martial arts. However, it behaves more like a living human than a zombie. It could defend and dodge attacks, and its speed and strength made its counterattack dangerous.

"GROWL!!"

Aikawa charged and ferociously assaulted with the metal tonfa that Tobe and Hayato made for the police. Even though the tonfa was filled with foam, the dampened noise was sickening.

"Get down, you zombie bastard!"

Aikawa's skill and accuracy overcame the zombie's speed advantage. It was at that point that Shizuka could accurately gauge his fighting strength.

"DUCK, AIKAWA!" Shizuka shouted.

Shizuka took the opportunity for a flying knee attack and squarely hit the strange zombie on the chin, sending it sideways. Aikawa followed with his tonfa as a baseball bat, bashing the zombie again with his entire body weight.

The way the zombie glared at them made the two realize it wasn't over.

"What a hard skull!" Shizuka felt a little sting in her knees, something that wouldn't happen if she were to hit an average zombie's skull. "Did I just kneed a concrete?!"

This greenish, muscular zombie was weird. It was not just the skull. It also had stronger joints than other zombies. The beating it received would have mangled the arms.

Aikawa pulled his Nambu M60 and shot the zombie almost point-blank, only for the bullet to shred part of the face and deflected aside instead of piercing through into the brain.

It wasn't as if the gun was ineffective. However, it might take more than one, maybe even more than two shots!

[ ] Keep attacking until Aikawa could shoot again. Hopefully, the second shot counted.
[ ] Use the shotgun to blast it. It should be more effective than the snub revolver.

Chapter 10 - 2
Shizuka was unwilling to gamble her life, so she pulled the shotgun from the bag behind her and turned off the safety before aiming.

"EH?!"

*DZOOP*

12 pellets hurled at 1050 feet per second right into the strange zombie's mouth, shredded its throat and blew the back of its skull. Such is the power of a shotgun fired at close range, if not point blank.

There wasn't enough time for the payload to spread, and the mixed chunk of mass retained its velocity through a soft target like a knife through butter.

She put the safety on again and put the shotgun back where it belonged, much to the confusion of Aikawa. Shizuka ignored him and rejoined her students in a pitched battle.

"Aikawa! What are you loligagging for?!" Chief of the police screamed.

"My apologies!"

In all honesty, Shizuka didn't expect they'd face such a fight before they could arrive on site. This lines up with the report that zombies love to wander around at night but prefer to stay indoors during the daytime.

"You guys tired yet?"

"Not particularly, Sensei," Yui said as she smacked away a zombie. "We were just a little surprised."

"Totsuka! Don't screw around! Bash them properly!" Yumiko yelled.

"On it!" Saika decided that an overhead swing would work this time, and it worked too well, causing him to get splattered. "Eeek!"

"Why are you still squeamish? Nevermind!" Shizuka thought.

The reinforcement came in the form of a flood patrol car. Which is really just a tiny police truck with floodlights. However, at the back of the car were a couple of hunters with their guns pointed forward.

"Why are you so late?!" The Chief of the police screamed.

"Apologies! We mopped up the stragglers in the back. There should be nothing left within 300 meters of this area!"

Shizuka noticed that the 'hunters' looked suspiciously young when it was well-known that most hunters in Japan have aging problems. Young people don't consider the profession worth the hassle or something that warrants a future.

Oho.

While that early fight was unexpected, it might be a blessing in disguise. By the time they secured the fabrication site, there was little to no possible threat of zombies, giving them time to rest and recover.

"Have a cool drink, everyone." Yumiko carried the icebox with her. "Good job!"

Everyone immediately drank a bottle of electrolytes. Their clothes were drenched as if they walked out of water.

"Give some to the police as well. The sealed bottles." Shizuka told Yui.

Yui nodded. While bottled drinks are precious, it was a brilliant way to secure goodwill. Not just to work together seamlessly but also to be polite.

...

"Sensei, about the gun..." Chief of the police asked. "Could we see the papers?"

Shizuka grinned but swore inwardly. "Bastards."

The police were clearly suspicious. But they refused to say anything, and Shizuka knew why. So they returned the paper to Shizuka with a polite smile after they inspected it, and unable to confirm without directly asking Chiba Police HQ and the Prefectural government.

Legal documents sure are handy!

"Speaking of which, we heard a gunshot, but that was quite faint. Was it Sensei's gun?"

"Well, it's loaded somewhat mild. 1.5 ounces, 12 buckshots at 1050 feet per second." Shizuka told them as she showed her empty shell. The shell she fired to kill the weird zombie. "Works well with the suppressor."

"Since we're here anyway, it's a good chance to resupply," Aikawa said. "I'm pretty sure they're pretty interested in your loadout."

"Eyy." Shizuka winced when she saw the glistening eyes of the hunters. "Are you talking about reloading or trading?"

"To be honest, we have an excess of bird shots. And we haven't secured the reloading equipment, so exchanging load is difficult." One of the more aged-looking hunters said. "If Sensei is so kind, we'd like to trade some of them."

"Ish, really?" Shizuka couldn't believe what she heard. "My apologies, but I know my way around firearms. Birdshots are literally useless against zombies at a range beyond 5-6 meters."

While there are myriad types of shotgun load, it can be split into three common categories: slug, buckshot, and birdshot. A slug is a fat bullet shoved into a shell. Buckshots are big pellets for hunting medium game like deer, elk, etc. Bird shots are tiny pellets to kill birds and other small animals.

Most shotgun shells are often loaded by weight instead of quantity. However, 1 ounce slug, 1 ounce worth of buck shots, and 1 ounce of bird shots behave differently. Bird shots already have a hard time killing a living human beyond 10 meters because they spread the damage too much. Against zombies which require headshots, the estimated range is 5-6 meters.

Trading buck shots for bird shots in the middle of a zombie apocalypse? Scam. Pure scam.

"Two to one!" One of them said. "I'll trade one birdshot shell for two buckshot shells!"

Two to one? Interesting proposition.

HOWEVER!

"Three to one." Komachi stepped up. "Three birdshot shells to one buckshot."

"Oh shit." Hachiman scoffed and walked away. "I am not getting involved with Ms. Hard Bargain. Have fun."

Komachi managed to fool her big brother into joining this summer camp event. His statement wasn't an exaggeration.

"Please don't be unreasonable! Three-to-one trade is too much!"

"Yeah, that's unfair."

"Ah, ah, ah. Uncles and grandpa, do you prefer three ammo you don't want to use or one you want and can use anytime." Komachi winked and wiggled her finger.

"Think about it. Sensei is a monster in close combat. She barely needed a gun to begin with. We survived this far without one. Without the helicopter, this gun would have been stuck in Chiba!" Komachi said as she slapped the gun bag.

What Komachi said had another subtext. In Shizuka's hands, the bird shots can still be utilized in close-range gunfighting. But the hunters have neither the fighting skill nor the courage to face the zombie yet.

And who can blame them? Shizuka's group is considered convenient nutjobs. Even the local gangs are now interested in them.

"We might or might not meet again in the future, but are you going to gamble it?" Komachi pointed. "For survival, there's nothing too expensive."

It was scary how compelling Komachi was. These hunters were about to give up any second.

"Alright. How many birdshots are you willing to trade?" The Chief of the police tried to mediate. "For public interest, I will record this transaction as legally protected firearm trade."

The hunters talked with each other and decided they offered 25 birdshots for 8 buckshots. That's one extra shell higher than the trade offer. They must be desperate to get these buckshots shells.

But that's understandable. Shizuka estimated that the maximum effective range of 00 buckshot against zombies is 20-30 meters, depending on luck.

"So, how about it, Sensei?" Komachi asked. "Am I getting ahead of myself or not?"

Tempting. It's not like Shizuka has an infinite supply of ammo herself. Even if they're only effective up to 6 meters or less, the birdshots shells packed a 12 gauge punch of pure destructiveness.

Also, Komachi literally crossed her fingers as she grinned at Shizuka. This kid is playing the devil right now.

Terrifying, indeed. No wonder Hachiman ran away. Shizuka will make sure to throw Komachi at future trade negotiations.

"Sensei. I'm going to the factory to check the truck with the workers." Tobe said. "Is it fine?"

"I'll see if there's anything I could help in the fabrication," Hayato said. "If we could learn something, that would be helpful."

"Eh? You guys think we should spend a night?" Yumiko asked. "Although... I guess it would be useful to stay."

"I'm kinda worried about our base camp," Hina mumbled. "We did bring sleeping bags, but... what about food?"

"Knowledge is power. Let's go cook dinner, Komachi." Hachiman said as he passed by.

"Right. We did bring some food with us, did we? Time to find a kitchen." Komachi shouted. "What about it, Sensei?"

"Well..."

Shizuka was conflicted. On the one hand, they brought their radio equipment, medicine, and a quarter of their food supplies here. On the other hand, they left three-quarters of their food supply in the camp, plus hard-earned luxuries.

While replaceable, it would still be a significant loss if they got robbed.

Resources offered for trade:
#7.5 Birdshots Shells (T1 Shells, 25)

[ ] Trade out Subsonic Buckshots shells (T3 Shells, 8)
Execute the trade as Komachi arranged. 3:1 trade.
[ ] Trade out Subsonic Buckshots shells (T3 Shells, 10)
Throw out a few more to gain reps and build trust. 5:2 trade.
[ ] Don't trade
It's not worth it.

[ ] "We should stay."
While staying would be uncomfortable, they could learn something from experience.
[ ] "We should return."
Nothing can beat the safety and comfort of the home base.
[ ] "Maybe we can split the group"
Hopefully nothing bad happens. Big risk, big return.

Chapter 10 - 3
"Alright. We should stay." Shizuka said. "Losing supplies is one thing. As long as our people stick together, we'll do fine. Talk with your friends and make sure you carry a radio and don't fuck around."

Shizuka returned to talk with the Chief and the Hunters. ""Anyway, my apologies for getting distracted. Since everyone had been so earnest, it would be rude for me not to validate it."

Shizuka pulled two packs of five shells from her hidden vest, worn underneath her favorite lab coat.

"Sensei? I thought we agreed with eight shells?" The hunters balked when they unpacked the boxes.

"Missing odd numbers from the packs would feel weirder." Shizuka smiled. "Please inspect the authenticity. As far as I know, these are manufactured by a small brand. As for the quality, I could not, in good faith, guarantee it."

In contrast, the birdshots shells came from well-known brands. Shizuka only needed to glance at the cardboard boxes to know they were legit.

Hearing this, the hunters weren't discouraged. Especially the middle-aged hunter, who betrayed his appearance with his eagle eye. "I don't know about factory quality, but the choice of primer, wad, and the perfect crimp told me this isn't a hand-loaded shell."

"Thank you for the generosity, Sensei." The young hunters nodded. "These buckshots shells will save lives."

Shizuka pulled out her notebook to collect the stamps from the Police Chief and the hunter representative. Even though it was a barter, they still had to follow regulations.

"We will inform you if there are future developments."

"I'll be waiting." Shizuka nodded.

With a polite bow, the two parties went a separate way. Shizuka thinks she made a good impression with that positive change of terms. Two shells are two shells, but it is also a gesture that Shizuka isn't always rigid.

"Right. Be careful, Tobe." Hayato patted him.

"You too, Hayato." Tobe nodded. And the two boys split their ways.

"Right. I'm going to exercise, then find a good place to take a bath." Yumiko said. "It would be awful if the boys left us again in the dust."

"Sadly, that's an inevitability," Hina chuckled. "But we don't have to be stronger than 99% of the boys. We can be stronger than 90% of them."

"Hina, that's weirdly optimistic." Yui winced. "I think I got stronger, but is that possible?"

"Of course, it is possible." Shizuka grinned. "You just need to do a training that makes 90% of men cry and fail."

"What are those?" Saika asked enthusiastically. "Please teach us, Sensei!"

"Hand walkouts and burpees!" Shizuka manically laughed. "HA! HA! HA! HA!"

"That can't be too difficult, could it be?" Yumiko scoffed.

"I have the feeling it would be." Hina's glasses glowed.

In theory, hand walkouts and burpees aren't that hard... once. Shizuka hadn't told them how many sets and reps they should do.

"2 sets of 12 hand walkouts, then 2 sets of 12 burpees. If you still have energy after that, add a set. You could consider yourself stronger than 80% of male athletes if you can do 6 sets each without getting floored." Shizuka said. "The key point is to push the limit of your body. Not to the point where you would collapse in the aftermath. This is how I gained my super strength."

While Shizuka was being honest, she wasn't sure how scientific her statement was. Also, the Burpee is a calisthenic exercise. The heavier your body, the more brutal it feels. Hence, it is much more challenging for muscular people than slender people.

Since she had nothing to do, Shizuka might as well have an exercise while watching over them.

Unfortunately, Shizuka had herself floored in just 5 sets. Age and tobacco really got to her.

"Are you alright, Sensei?" Saika asked.

"Damnit, if only I have the willpower to stop smoking!" Shizuka cried. "At least my body is getting more fit, still."

Komachi and Hachiman found a stash of cold food in the Corporate cafeteria and decided to use it without reservation. They distributed it to the workers and the police forces, much to their gratitude. The reason was they were left in the fridge and already lost freshness.

Komachi had to dump the rotting ingredient out of the building.

"Komachi can't guarantee quality with such ingredients and cooking quantity." Komachi sighed. "But at least we won't go sick."

"I think these people had more concern about starvation than anything," Hachiman remarked quietly. "Compared to the refugees, we ate like kings every day."

The Soubu group was always able to put in 120% effort because of their relatively high morale. Otherwise, would they appear this reliable to the suffering, impoverished locals?

"Oh, right. The weird zombie. Glowing eyes, hard skeleton, and strengthened joints."

Even beyond its shocking physical prowess, its uncanny human behavior disturbed Shizuka. "You think it was weird, Chief?"

"I was terrified. I thought I was going to die." Chief said. "We had never seen something like that before. Being able to punch through into a polycarbonate shield is superhuman. But more concerning is the behavior."

"Absolutely. Although it was aggressive, it wasn't suicidal like most zombies. It is difficult to trick it with common judo tactics, and I am not confident I have the raw strength to subdue it." Aikawa added. "Next time I saw something like that, I sincerely hope I had a shotgun, or at least anything stronger than M60."

"Gunma HQ really abandoned you, huh." Shizuka lit a cigarette and took a puff. "Though I suppose the lives of a thousand Minakami citizens can't be compared to the city dwellers."

"On the contrary, it seemed that the city had it rougher. I've heard that less than four thousand." Chief also lit his own cigarette. "Less than ten percent survival rate from a population of forty-five thousand."

"Chiba city wasn't that different, I'm afraid." Shizuka sighed. "Especially with our proximity to Tokyo. There are rumors that a zombie tsunami could form and sweep the surroundings."

"HQ promised to send us some weaponry, but we can't rely on them at all," Aikawa shouted. "Goddamn urbanites!"

"We just heard a leak that the National Government finished reorganizing, but the situation is still overwhelming." Hina came and informed Shizuka. "Yukinoshita told us that Chiba city will be evacuated in three days."

"Is that so?" Shizuka was shocked to hear that.

"Also..." Hina grimaced. "Yui's father passed away, and Tobe's mother is hospitalized..."

Goddamnit.

"Have they been informed?" Shizuka asked in worry.

Shizuka's question was answered by the sight of Yui embracing Yumiko for comfort. It did not last long, though. Yui didn't even look like she was crying.

"Yui is taking it well. I think, just like me, she always knew there was a chance that her father wouldn't make it. It was already a miracle that he escaped Tokyo while injured."

"Tobe probably took it harder because his mother survived the initial outbreak only to get into an accident during volunteer work. However, when he compared himself to Yui, he felt he didn't deserve to grief."

"...What about you, Ebina?" Shizuka asked. "You see, I already made peace with my parents because they were old and unlikely to survive this calamity. But what about you?"

"...I already gave up on them surviving, Sensei." Hina smiled. "Sometimes, I felt like a sociopath. I know I'm hurting inside, just not as much as I think it would."

"The fact that you're aware of your pain instead of denying it means you're a strong girl." Shizuka patted her head. "But if you want to cry, don't hold it. If you want to talk to someone, I'm all ears."

"Sensei." Yui approached Shizuka. "Before we return, can we... have a funeral pray?"

"Sure." Shizuka nodded.

The industrial complex is located 100 meters away from a Buddhist temple. Everyone decided to pray both for the living and the dead. Shizuka couldn't say she was ever a religious person, but she couldn't see the harm.

She prayed for the well-being of her parents, whether they were dead or alive.

"Sensei." Tobe grinned. "We halfway finished our new truck."

His eyes were covered in dark circles, and it was unclear whether it was because he cried or because he hadn't slept a wink the entire night. Maybe it was a bit of both.

Nevertheless, Shizuka decided she would pay close attention to him and Yui.

"Woah? Are you sure?"

"Yeah. We used a box truck as the base unit and modified the interior. We added a few polycarbonate windows instead of using glass." The factory worker explained. "Comfort might be an issue, though. That boy, Tobe-kun, said we should use folding seats. We finished the modding overnight, though. So we can't complain."

The seats were bolted to each side and unfolded for use.

"No. This is a good thing." Shizuka said. "We can use the truck as cargo if necessary. Good job, Tobe."

"I was inspired by military armored vehicles, actually," Tobe said. "Also, look at that. We installed a retractable antenna mount. It can extend up to 15 meters high."

"Ah, to extend our short-range radio." Yui realized.

"The radio parts are bolted on safely, so unless we got into an accident, they'll be safe even if the road is rough," Tobe explained. "And most of all... with this, we can leave quickly anytime we want."

"Right." Shizuka nodded. "Do you want to go home soon, Tobe?"

"...No." Tobe shook his head. "If possible, we should go to the mass evacuation target instead. That's probably the safer approach. If they evacuate Chiba city, there's probably a good reason."

"...The reason is simple. While Chiba's central area is underdeveloped, every place alongside the coast is urbanized." Hachiman said. "The people in Chiba's countryside are trapped in the long run. They're screwed if zombies start to spread inward. This might take weeks or months, but they will be there."

"Will your parents be alright, Hachiman?" Saika asked in worry.

"Rationally, I think they would be alright." Hachiman sighed. "But confidence in someone's intelligence doesn't mean I'm not worried about them. What of your parents?"

"My father had always been kind but sensitive. He had a hard time adapting to the harsh life. Mother is doing well, as far as I understand." Saika nodded. "I'm just relieved both of them were safe."

"What about you, Zaimokuza?"

"My parents are in the countryside, but..." Zaimokuza hesitated. "I don't have it in good faith that my father will make it. He had a poor diet and lifestyle in general, even though we aren't exactly poor. Last time we had a call with a working cellphone, he had a coughing fit."

"...Sorry to hear that."

Being able to call back home had its upsides. And downsides. It's a blessing for those who miraculously had their families surviving intact. But for those who are unlucky...

And realistically, most kids in the group are part of the unlucky bunch. That most of them have at least one parent surviving is a miracle.

"How about you, Hayama?"

"I learned a lot," Hayato said. "At least I can operate CNC, laser, and water cutter by myself. But in terms of design, I could only make simple shapes."

Hayato gave Zaimokuza a strange curved blade with a 30cm long handle and a 50cm edge. It wasn't long, but when Zaimokuza held it, he was surprised by the heft. "WOAH. It is surprisingly heavy."

"It's a forged rebar blade. It's a little unwieldy but in terms of chopping strength, hard to match." Hayato grinned. "Unfortunately, I hadn't learned how to harden and temper it. This would dull easily."

"Heh. I also have a new weapon for you." Tobe gave Zaimokuza a mace, seemingly built from car parts. "When you feel like swinging something other than that rusty sledgehammer."

"Thank you... my comrades." Zaimokuza started to cry.

"Oh, and Sensei. I know how to unplug your shotgun now." Hayato said. "That means you can load 3 shells in the mag."

"Whoa, really?" Shizuka blinked. "Is that even legal?"

"The police forces are issued a moratorium to loosen civilian ownership of weapons. However, civilians are still prohibited to use over caliber weapons, destructive devices, and incendiaries." Chief of the police force said as he inspected his newly silenced Nambu M60. "That means you're still limited to 12 gauge shotgun and 10.5mm rifles. However, pistols and automatic weapons are now allowed, should you be able to obtain one. And there's no restriction in terms of magazine size."

Shizuka thought it was funny, but they were only saying that now, seven days into the apocalypse after over 80% of the population ceased to exist. Leave it to the Japanese bureaucracy.

"If we need something that 12 gauge shotgun and 7.62mm rifle can't take on, I'd be rightfully worried." Shizuka grinned. "Like, cocaine bear worried."

It was not all roses and sunshine. When they returned to their base camp, they found a warzone—a literal warzone. In fact, the glamping house was torched—unironically torched.

Besides that, there were a few fresh corpses.

"WHO THE HELL DID THIS?!" Yumiko screamed.

"You know who did it." Hachiman's face darkened. "Fucking bastards."

"That might be our fault." Someone said.

A ginormous tall man and a woman with glasses approached them. The man was dressed in a long coat, and the woman wore a two-piece racing suit.

"Father? Mother?" Komachi's smile widened as she ran toward them and tackled them, unable to hide her joy. "Why are you here? How?"

"That was a long story, but..." The woman said. "My name is Sachie, and this is my husband, Shunsuke. We're Hachiman and Komachi's parents. Thank you for taking care of them, Sensei."

"Ah, welcome to the camp." Shizuka winced. "I guess."

"So, how is this your responsibility at all?" Hachiman asked. Unlike Komachi, he didn't seem like the type to be emotional over his parents, and that was somewhat odd to Shizuka.

"When we arrived here, some punks were partying and making problems. We thought you abandoned this camp, and they took over, but then they bothered us." Sachie pulled an eerily realistic-looking assault rifle. Even Shizuka couldn't tell if it was a replica or genuine until closer inspection. "Some dipshit was trying to use a Molotov cocktail to kill us but instead burned the house."

"Ah." Hayato finally understood. "Does the group ride motorcycles everywhere?"

"Yeah, actually," Shun recalled. "After they lost some of their members, they ran with their tails between their legs. They left some of their bikes here. Oh, ignore the Ural. That was ours."

There were two 150cc scooters, one motorcycle, and one ATV. Shun also mentioned a Ural sidecar motorcycle, and it was there.

"They ruined our glamping house." Yumiko gritted her teeth. "I'm so pissed. I want to kill them."

"I'll be honest. I agree with you." Yui shouted. "Biker gang bastards! Come here if you dare! I'll make a mochi out of your brain!"

"Be that as we may, we should really consider where to live next." Hina sighed. "While the glamping house is toast, we still have the catering restaurant. The building is sturdy, and the windows are reinforced. Or we can return to our old base camp."

"Just my opinion, but I think this location is too far removed and vulnerable," Sachie remarked. "If you want to rebuild this place or use this area in general, you will need a high vantage point. A watchtower, so to speak."

"Hmm." Tobe rubbed his chin. "I don't know about building one, but... we can steal one."

"...How do you steal a tower?" Saika questioned.

"A mobile tower." Tobe pointed. "A crane platform. Remember the truck factory I worked in last night? They convert ordinary trucks into crane trucks for farming and industrial maintenance. Instead of a watchtower, we can steal one."

"Ah!"

"I like our old base, but it was too deep in the woods. Plus, we still have to build more beds." Yumiko said. "But the hot spring is nice. I'm so conflicted."

"In that case, why don't you take over a Ryokan and fortify it?" Sachie asked. "Bed space is the least of your worries. A hot bath is also not an issue. Just clean it up a little."

"Honestly, we should probably find a closer place to the city," Hayato argued. "Sure, there are zombies. But at least we're close enough to ask for help."

"Besides, did none of you think we should rejoin the Chiba evacuation party?" Hachiman added. "Hayama has a point."

"We're abandoning this damn base." Yumiko decided. "What about the dam control area? There should be fewer zombies there."

"It's also close to a helipad." Saika nodded.

"Right." Shizuka nodded. "Whatever shelter we pick, it is going to be temporary."
