0.0 The Intro

MEHFOOD

[Unverified Writer]
Hello, and welcome to Into The Night. This is my first ever quest, and one that I hope will be long and entertaining. Admittedly, much of this will be made up as we go along, so things like rules aren't really finalized yet, and likely never will be. Expect new mechanics to be made up as necessary, and old ones to be dropped with little warning. For the most part, such things will be in the background and hidden from your view, so if you are hoping for clearly defined rules and regulations, this is not the quest for you. Having said that, I hope you give me a chance, and that you'll stick around for a bit. Anyway, let's move on to telling the story. But wait! How can I start telling a story, if there's no setting? Looks like we have our First Vote! Feel free to pick whatever setting you want, as your powers and abilities won't be limited by your choice. If you want a high elf summoning demons and throwing fireballs in a space opera, then cast your vote!

So, is this a:

[] Sci-fi Quest
- [] Hard Sci-fi, with advanced yet plausible technology. That means no FTL, Teleportation, or other advanced goodies

- [] Soft Sci-fi, where the laws of physics were more of a suggestion anyway. Expect easy FTL, implausible energy weapons, and other impossibilities

- [] Mixed Sci-fi, which mixes the other two. FTL is possible, but limited, some technologies make no sense or rely on technobabble to function

[] Fantasy Quest
- [] Urban Fantasy, where magic and myth meets modern life. Maybe the masquerade is intact, or maybe monster are commonplace and normal.

- [] High Fantasy, where classic culture creates a classic adventure. Expect vaguely medieval culture and tech, with dragons and elves and all those other fantasy cliches.

[] Write-in: This should be a setting, not a specific work

And now that we have our background, let's get to the fun bit: Character Creation!

Are you a:

[] Boy

[] Girl

[] Or can you change your gender at will?

And how old do you look?

[] 10 to 12, just don't expect others to take you serious until you've proven yourself

[] 18 to 20, you are a fine specimen of early adulthood. People will listen, but are unlikely to expect much wisdom

[] 28 to 30, you are in the prime of your life. People will heed your words, but your connection to the younger generations is strained due to your apparent age.

What can you do? What kind of special abilities do you have that makes you stand out? Are you a:

[] Mage, who uses both instinctive and learned magic to accomplish amazing things.

[] Creature, whose unnatural heritage grants you powers beyond mortal ken.

[] Fighter, whose long experience with weapons gives you incredible strength.

[] Contractor, who borrows the powers of those greater than you to accomplish your feats.

[] Write-in, can be as specific or general as you desire. Just, not to OP, yes?

If you want clarification on any of the powers, feel free to ask! I wanted to keep it short and sweet, even if it is a bit confusing.

- - [x] Actually, horror, where magic is at best dangerous with many areas being either inherently malevolent or insanity-inducing.

First off, hooray for people actually voting! Now, I'd like to clarify a few things that i think may have been unclear. First off, the power vote is a generalization. There will be another vote to narrow down what abilities you have to start with, and you aren't limited to that power-set. So if the vote is called and, say, Mage wins, but you really wanted Fighter, then later on you can vote to gain Fighter abilities. Next, Contractor; it is a really odd category, borne of my need to catalog everything by specifics. It is not just a summoner tree; it is also calling upon a higher power to aid in casting, or to accomplish feats otherwise impossible. Druidry and Clericalism lies inside, as does Demonic Magic, and other similar empowerment. It is literally contracting to a higher power to gain personal power, and comes with the logical downsides of such a thing. I hope that helps clear things up a bit, and i'd like to again thank y'all for giving me a bit of your attention!

[X] Science Fantasy: "Science fantasy is a mixed genre within the umbrella of speculative fiction which simultaneously draws upon and/or combines tropes and elements from both science fiction and fantasy."
(thank you Wikipedia!)

If that is okay with you?

Science Fantasy is fine! Anyway, I'm probably gonna call the vote around one tomorrow, just a heads up.

I'm thinking something like a wish granting genie. We have power, but it's greatest when doing stuff for other people or granting wishes.

Cue Grimderp vampires, cultists, contractors, and evil-sorcerer wannabes trying to use our power for evil ends. Or just general wish-granting shenanigans.

"You wish for weird things! Why can't you just wish for money like everybody else?"

Science fantasy part is simple: I want cool fantasy in space. Like Star Wars, but better.
Horror part is a bit more complicated: I want a world where magic is not thrown around casually and handled with respect. Also, so known horror elements can be amusing in their ridiculousness.
A competent specialist in a risky business is something I can find interesting: 30 years are exactly the age of an aspiring competent specialist.

0.2 Character Creation 2
Well, aren't you a little young to be wandering around this late, boy? Don't you know things lurk in the night? Don't you know what kind of terrors skulk around looking for new prey? Are you not frightened of what lies in the dark, waiting for defenseless morsels such as yourself to wander into their grasp? Or, are they?

[] Masquerade Intact, monsters don't roam freely, myth and magic are hidden. Harder to gain new abilities, but random monster interrupts are less likely. You must actively uphold the Masquerade, or suffer consequences.

[] Broken Mask, where the world never lost its magic. Magic is a known force, and society understands that, leading to easier power-ups. However, those that would do you harm can blend in with the crowd, making it harder to prevent random events.

Ah, but I see now, you aren't defenseless at all! Tell me, how long have you known how to call upon those powers? To have such a connection to

[] Nature
[] Shadows
[] Light
[] Heaven
[] Hell
[] The Elements
[] Yggdrasil
[] The Duat
[] Mt Olympus
At such a young age is nothing short of incredible, even if you have yet to learn of it yet! And I see you've already contracted with the

[] Nature Spirits
[] Shadowborn
[] Lightbringers
[] Heavenly Hosts
[] Demonic Hordes
[] Elementals
[] The Norse Gods
[] The Egyptian Gods
[] The Greek Gods
[] The Fey

How fascinating! Truly, you are quite powerful for a child. Come closer, child, I swear by all the gods, old, new, and yet to come I mean you no harm! Step out of the shadows, let me see your face, let em hear your name, and I shall teach you a bit more of your contracts. I am, after all, very old and very knowledgeable.

[] Write in Name, and Character Portrait. Remember, your are a small child, and the portrait should reflect this.

The First Vote is about your Contractual Affinity, aka what you are naturally inclined towards. You start out with some low level abilities from this branch, but no actual contract. If you choose an option that lines up with the second vote, you will be further along in that contract but will not have any particular bonus to other abilities. The second vote determines what kind of powers you already hold. This is the second to last vote of character creation, and after this one is done i can start writing some actual story, woo! The Last character creation update will include a vote on what you already know within your selected contract, what you've gained from your Aptitude, and a bonus vote for any sub-classes, like Artificer, Alchemist, or any of the original classes, as well as what your starting equipment and location is.

Being contracted to the embodiment of the plant itself seems like it could be really fun and lead to a lot of interesting things.

If you want to go down that route, contract to Nature Spirits, Gaia is the Contract Holder and Big Boss of that contract.

Those are all really good, Enjoy 100 personal XP, you can put it towards Contract Clauses next update!
