D-Day: Malevelon Creek - HELLDIVERS PATROL

Fun pickle! He will slow us down (while nothing seems to be wrong with his legs, people without working arms don't move through terrain well), casevac will take precious time, and he can't defend himself whatsoever. But I suppose all the more excuse to take things slow and try to link up with others. Treat the immediate risk of death, shove drugs up him, then displace a bit so that we can take a break in something resembling safety before moving on to find other friends.

[X] Start treating his wounds. Tell Votar to stim him while we work

Also, we can't call a casevac, none of our comms are working.

The best thing we can do is get him in a state where he can walk under his own power and GTFO again. Staying in once place for too long as a group of functionally two combatants in a warzone will get you killed.

Seems to be the best option. Hopefully he won't run off or do something stupid while we're still doing first aid and the stims aren't a vasodilator (hopefully the DI would know if they were...)

[x] Apply a tourniquet to his missing limbs. Tell Votar to keep watch
I think that's what the first aid should be? He's probably gonna lose the hand anyway, and we need him to stop bleeding out before the stim

"I dunno," she said simply. "The LT got hit, and Eagleburger told us to stand and shoot them. Like in the bughunt sims." She paused, her voice flat, monotone. "They shot back."

Classic Eastern Front blunder.

Eagleburger probably fell to the Creek's infamous pre-nerf rocket devastators.

I agree with everyone saying we need to GTFO ASAP though. Get him moving under his own power so he can find a spot to hide til casevac comes.

Okay, time for me to desperately write some medical moves. Roll me Nerve/Medical in the meantime.

Ohhh man, we're really in it now. Space vietnam here we come.

In the immediate future though, what should our game plan be? If we save the guy's life, we have a walking wounded slowing us down until we can call Casevac, and with the comms down, that's not an option until either the jammer is down or we're out of range. While we have Votar with us now, we're still a long way from completing our objectives.

In short, situation F.U.B.A.R.

I'm not even sure what we can do to take down rhe Artillery Base, Jammer, and Airbase. We need our entire platoon for that, and seeing as our entire platoon got massacred 1 second into the operation, we're essentially hopeless.

Our best bet is gathering enough survivors for a squad or two and maybe trying to take down the nearby Jammer so we can call it mission accomplished and extract.

Edit: time to become a proper Creek Crawler!

Well that's a fun time to read. Makes the insanity that was The Creek feel a lot more real though (because this is through the lens of someone who doesn't get 5 respawns). Anyways, 3 out of what...20? 30? Pretty bad cas rates for literal first drop.

We also can't call in support til the jammer is gone or we move out of range. Tough spot but at least its not 2 detector bases with LOS on you at all times like my last bot mission.

Stims will hopefully get Geschred moving under his own power, because otherwise lugging him around is going to be hard
The stims probably won't keep him moving forever though, so casevac him as soon as we can
And consider alternatives to move him like hoping that there's a field medic in one of these teams equipped with a drag sled, or hoping someone has the knowhow to craft a makeshift one

Step one is to regroup with as many people as we can find ASAP and assess the situation and what we have on hand,
Step two is to either take down the jammer or get out of its range, which one we go with is contingent on whether we can figure out where the jammer even is
Step three is Casevac the wounded, probably call in a resupply and some of the fancy supply stratagems we picked like the ever popular shield backpack, and hope that there's some reinforcements available
And then we figure out how to push onto the Objective C from there, assuming that the critical bit of the Long Range Sensor Net doesn't also include the jammer, which it might

We don't know enough to bother planning for the specifics beyond the broad strokes
The most important thing at the moment is just getting back in contact with as much of the landing force as possible

Day 1 - 8:00 - Medical Bills
You slung your rifle and took a knee, the training taking over as you pulled open his first aid kit and drew out the auto-tourniquet, wrapping it around above his ruined stump exactly like the training dummy. You pulled the loop tight and then activated the motor, and he screamed behind his helmet; you quickly pulled his mask up to expose his face, tear-streaked dark skin and wide, terrified eyes, clamping your hand over his mouth to silence him.

"May, stim him!" you hissed insistently. "Now!"

Votar knelt beside you, reaching for her pack. You glared, and she got the message, carefully moving the man's hand and drawing out one of Geschred's stims instead. Always use the casualty's own kit so there was something in case you got hit.

She pulled the cap off and drove the needle end through the port in Geschred's thigh; he winced and gasped under your hand, but within seconds his eyes focused, pupils dilating, and you withdrew to let him breathe. His uncovered mouth had a broad, goofy smile.

"Sweet Liberty, that's good…" he said, and then he tried to sit up. Both of you immediately grabbed his shoulders and pressed him back down to the dirt, and you drew out some of his bandages to get to work on his hand. "Hey, how bad is it?"

"Um, it's not great," Votar volunteered sheepishly. He chuckled.

"Yeah, it felt bad. Can I help?" he said, his voice now totally at ease, like this was a casual conversation after a funny little accident instead of crippling injury.

"You can hold still, Alex, hold up your right hand," you instructed. He did so, then laughed as he saw his hand.

"Wow! Okay, no wonder I couldn't open my pack. That's messed up," he said, as you carefully wound his bandages between bloody fingers. "Oooh boy, this is gonna be a lot of medical bills."

"You have insurance, right?" Votar asked, and he nodded.

"Yep! My mom helped me set it up, it was expensive," he said, staring in wonder as you worked. "Looks like it'll pay off, though, or, well, pay out. You are weirdly good at that, Drake."

You didn't feel good at it, you just felt focused. You'd worried so much what you'd do if your comrades got hit, and you'd thrown yourself at the sims and practice dummies because the nightmare of letting them down was just too much. It was just like practice; you could hear Votar on the edge of freaking out behind her mask, but you couldn't let him down.

Bandage Patient: 4 Suck
Results: 3 Hits, +2 from Tourniquet. All Bleeding stopped.

"Are you hit anywhere else?" you asked, looking over his torso and legs. There was something embedded in his vest; it turned out to be a piece of his rifle sling, and it hadn't gone deep. "Do you remember what happened?"

"I was taking aim at some bot and then I was lying in the grass," he replied, breathing out slowly. "Didn't even get him, I hope somebody else did. I guess my rifle got hit with something heavy. You see it anywhere?"

"Yeah, it's in bits," Votar confirmed. Geschred laughed, loud enough that you moved to cover his mouth again.

"Sorry, no, just… when the Armoury tech issued my rifle, the DI was like… 'Take good care of it, son, and it'll save your life.' He wasn't kidding, huh! How long was I in the grass?"

He tried to raise his left arm to check the watch on his designator gauntlet, but there wasn't anything to check. He giggled.

"Oh yeah. Think they'll give me a robot arm like the old man?"

"After we get you out of here. Think you can walk?" you asked. He held out the ruined remains of his right hand so you could help him up, and after recoiling a little, you grabbed him by his wrist.

"I feel like I could run a marathon," he replied. "This stuff is amazing."

"Yeah, keep your voice down, Alex," you replied, indicating to him to take a knee. He wobbled while doing so, unable to properly balance himself. "Okay, I heard rifle shots up, uh, I guess it's about north from here, but I think I heard more voices here. May?"

"I saw some of us fall back north, some still fighting and some wounded and stimmed. B-but I was pinned down," Votar said, guilt evident in her voice. "There were other voices, but I haven't heard anyone but Alex in a few minutes."

Sheet updated. 7 Suck so far.

Geschred's bleeding is under control. The stim will keep him moving for about three hours normally, have a weaker effect for about two more hours, then he'll crash unless you stim him again.

What do you do?

[X]Move north in search of survivors.

This does mean we're headed away from the other two platoons, but I don't have any better ideas right now.

[X] Move north in search of survivors.

Geschred has lost one arm and had his other hand ruined. Suffice to say, he isn't in fighting condition, he can't even hold a gun. However, he's an extra pair of eyes in this bot ambush infested jungle, so I say we bring him with us.
