Actually funnily enough there's a 40k story where a machanicus accidentally uploads himself as an engram while running from data daemons, if I recall he had plugged himself into some cogitators that were still functioning to his surprise and then the daemons killed him. In that same story the villains are actually dark mechanicus who store themselves in a collective gestalt consciousness inside of a massive data crystal, it's a grey knight story, the one with the castigator Titan, the story is Dark Adeptus.
