Given the sheer quantity of fixfic in general that gets produced for Eva, WAFF being popular is totally unsurprising :)
There has been a rather large slump in the last few years though, as the novelty from Shinji and Warhammer/Nobody Dies/Once More With Feeling wore off. A&T and Co seem to have given it some oomph now.

One of the biggest reasons I actually started my fic was because of the lack of updates from some of my favourite authors, like OMWF, Scar Tissue, Unbroken and some others.

I dunno if mine could really be considered WAFF though.

Eh, the franchise is close to twenty years old (probably is since it first aired in 1995). The NGE fandom actually reached its height say around a decade and slowly petered out with the most popular fansites dying out many years ago.

I find it more interesting that as time goes on interpretation of characters tend to change. For example, Gendo as all-knowing-manipulator is somewhat common meme/interpretation and I use to think of him as one. However, as I have become older and hopefully wiser, now I see him as a terrible human being who is completely disconnected from the people around him and a terrible leader/manager who is caught unprepared for the side effects of his own machinations.

True fandom never dies. It's just the 'hipster' fanbase that went and looked for other recently popular series to latch on to.

I believe that's called growing up.:p

Seriously, though: of course our interpretation changes with our understanding of a character. It is/should be natural.

Dunno about others, but warmth and fuzziness are the dominant emotions when I read your fic. Don't listen to aja318 :p

Sure, but as I said, there was a big influx in interest spurned by the fics I mentioned, which eventually died down as well.

That's actually the bit that feels weird to me sometimes- I see all the new unfix-fic-like reimaginings of the ending... The movies, the "End of Eva" stuff, and I'm like... dude, I can't watch that. Not really. I tried the first couple'a movies. And it was just more of the "and then, everyone is tang", and now I see stuff for End of Eva and I'm like, dude, I cannot take this seriously. This franchise is safer in the hands of fanfic writers than in the hands of the people that actually own it.

Tang was the end for twenty years. A different ending at this point... it feels no more canonical than someone's random scribblings on fanfic.net...

Both Unbroken and Scar Tissue have kinda faltered late on. With Unbroken it was kind of clear the author didn't really know what to do with the last few chapters, and in the last chapter of Scar Tissue what used to be the most interesting part of the story (Shinji and Asuka) suddenly became the least interesting. You got the feeling the author kind of wanted to just get all the character development out of the way so that he could focus on his evil Ruskie Eva showdown.

Yeah, the whole 'Suddenly RUSSIA!' angle that Scar Tissue took I didn't like much; And you are correct on Unbroken too, the last few chapters pale in comparison to the way the story opens up. :(

I can honestly say that I have, as of yet, not read either of them (interstingly enough, they're on my backburner since, like, forever). What did I miss?

Scar Tissue: Shinji and Asuka are traumatised by Third Impact. Asuka takes it out on Shinji (who simply lets her as he feels he deserves it) and eventually hospitalises him. The story starts as she realises the hell she put the boy through.

Unbroken: Post Third Impact with only Shinji and Asuka returning. Shinji's catatonic, Asuka has to look after him. Eventually Lilith gives Asuka the chance to go back and change things.

Of the two, Unbroken is the more... conventional one. Scar Tissue is psychological and at times downright cringe worthy to read over the hell the kids go through, but sooooooo worth it.

I found it really interesting as a premise, but gave up on it a coupld years ago when it turns out that having Asuka basically made his bitch by fate (and blackmail that not making him happy would lead to a bad end) made Shinji more whiny and unlikeable (or thats at least how I remember it).

Edit: Seems like I stopped reading it in the worst place possible. It got much better afterwards.

"I'm home!" Misato slides her shoes off. "And I brought home a stray."

Asuka pads into the hall. "Welcome back, Misato. Dinner'll be ready soon." She then grabs an apparently drugged and half out-of-it Shinji by the arm and drags him to their room.

When she returns a minute late, the captain just enters the small kitchenette. "No sweat on dinner."

Misato opens the beer fridge, then grimaces. "I hate you," she intones dully, closing the refrigerator full of lemonade.

"You can thank me later." Asuka hands her a cup of coffee. "Now sit down and stop sulking." She then twists her hands in the apron she is wearing. "How's Shin?"

Her mother figure waves off her concerns and smiles. "He'll be fine." She then grins. "Way to go to tell him who's boss."

As-of-recently unexpectedly, Asuka blows her top: "Du kannst mich mal, Misato!!" [14] She then continues on, wearing an incredibly fierce scowl: "<Do you think I just waited for a chance to break Shinji's nose with wondergirl's satchel!? What is it you're smoking!?>"

Misato winces at the German barrage and drops her head, then takes a cautious drag of her coffee. "I'm sorry, I was trying to be funny..."

Asuka grinds her teeth as she drops into a chair and crosses her arms in anger, depositing them on the table's top. "<Wasn't funny in the slightest.>" [16]

Her guardian nods in defeat and attempts to change the topic: "So, how bad was the apartment?"

The redhead simply cocks an eyebrow, but takes the bone: "Bad isn't the word I'd use." Just then Ayanami enters from the living room and Asuka turns around to her. "Honestly, Rei, didn't you think to clean your place at all?"

Rei stops short and gives her a confused look. "I did not think it necessary. It was agreeable."

Asuka gives her an exasperated look. "Agreeable? Agreeable!? That place was a pigsty filled with nothing but concrete, trash, and fifty pairs of white underwear."

"I object. So--" She doesn't get further as Asuka continues.

"Yeah, yeah, some of it is mauve, blah blah blah." She bashes her head on her crossed arms in exasperation. "I have no idea why Shinji was so frakking worked up over his father not raising him, when clearly the only result of Commander Ikari trying to raise a child is this... this... apathetic Misato!

Misato chokes on her coffee. "Hey!"

Rei raises a hand. "Question."

Asuka's eyebrow shoots up. "Don't raise your hand, we're not in school."

Ayanami blushes and lowers her hand, then asks: "Does this mean Shinji is Dr. Akagi?"

The redhead stops short. "What? Why would he be Dr. Akagi?" she intones slowly.

The albino almost smirks. "He is the belligerent sibling figure. It only makes sense that he would be her."

"Wait." Asuka's jaw drops as she connects the dots: "Now wait just a moment! Are you making me out to be like Kaji?"

Rei starts to fully smirk now: "I've seen Mr. Kaji engaging in flirtatious actions with Dr. Akagi, so it is possible."

The redhead huffs. "I'm not Kaji. Well, OK, maybe I'm a little bit... HOLD IT!!"

Asuka spreads her arms in desperation and Misato closes her mouth, witty comment dying in her throat. "This is a distraction. Rei's trying to lead us away from the fact that she's a slob."

"Commander Ikari said I was fine." Rei's eyes show signs of defiance, with Misato waving her hand in a mock-affirmative gesture.

The German lays a hand to her face and shakes her head. "...and the fact that Shinji is apparently the only person in his family that isn't. Argh, I'll better get dinner done before I go ballistic. Again."

Translation:
[14]
There's not really a translation to that idiom as it is a shortened form of "Du kannst mich mal am Arsch lecken!" which literally means "You can go lick my arse!" An equivalent in severity would be the British "Sod you!"

I have been curious about these for a while now, do they serve an actual purpose or are they meant to be some sort of separation markers?

Character Notes 5: Gendo's Motives 2
New snippet in the next few days - sorry, life is crazy, at the moment.
Gendo was barroom brawler who spend almost as much time in the drunk tank as he did in class. Just because he was intelligent enough to be dangerous didn't mean he had the motivation. Before Yui he was basically a bum. After he had the motivation to become dangerous. Yui is the entire reason he even knew about SEELE, or any of the crap going on behind the scenes. At least in canon. If this is that seriously AU then I'm fine with that, but it might bear a mention that "Hey, this is seriously AU" in the pre-story notes.
Found some new information while digging for the next scene. Seems my original information on Gendoh is in the supplemental data:
Classified Information from the game NGE2 said:
Gendo Ikari

A. Publicly Released Information
Commander-in-chief of Nerv and Shinji Ikari's father. A cool-headed personality who will use any means necessary to achieve his goals. His subordinates find him somewhat difficult to deal with.

B. Generally Recognized Information
Served the formerly existing entity, Gehirn, as the chief of the Artificial Evolution Laboratory. He employs his gift for manipulating information and concealing his handiwork in order to actively acquire funding for Nerv's administration.

C. Confidential Information
Married Yui Ikari, who has connections with Seele, so that he could become a member himself. He held consecutive posts as the Executive Chief of Operations (among other things) for Project E, the Human Instrumentality Project, and Nerv. Not long after he became a member of Seele, he went to the South Pole to be an auditor for the Katsuragi Investigation Team.
