Corporation: The Black Bag Department

With the target dead, the voice whispers in your head one last time.

"You have my attention. I will send further instructions at an appropriate time."

The whispers fade and a tiny part of you wonders if what you have done is wise before it is crushed.
Bailey crushed the doubts that had sprouted without hesitation. Those doubts were what led to hesitation and hesitation led to dead comrades and failed missions... and Bailey had no intention of failing any mission. She had received her orders and she had followed them. She had accomplished her mission.

And that was enough to satisfy her.

Once the entire team had regrouped Bailey briefly noted a somewhat...unhappy? No, not unhappy, it was a concerned expression on Kern's face as they approached, but for now that didn't matter. She had received orders from higher up the chain of command that her immediate commander and she had followed through.

The opinion of someone below the one who had issued her orders did not matter.

Bailey mentally held onto that thought as she used the peaceful opportunity to reload her rifle, the half-empty magazine getting slipped into her duffle to reloaded at a future point in time.

Raptor walks up to Miss Dizet and joins the group. Thankfully, now that he's back, he doesn't need to make a potentially toxic decision. Just listen to the leader's orders and advise.

That said, no need to be stupid, and basic observation suggests that something's not going as planned, over and above the already existing problem, which means keeping his eyes peeled and other skills and abilities ready until they are in a confirmed and verified safe location. Fucking intelligence operational clusterfucks.

The vid starts with the victim speaking with several people, including Tristan Wu, at a table inside the club. The camera tags them as Eurocorp, Tao-Jinn and Western Federation executives. Not entirely strange, Dubai is Tao-Jinn's concession to good Corporate relations, a neutral zone of decadent pleasure.

The camera doesn't have audio pickup, but angles are sufficient that a trained lip-reader could figure out what was being discussed, but whatever is being discussed is clearly something that these high-level executives are interested in.

And then the gunfire starts, cameras showing Poseidon and surprising Cormoros Agents breaching the building and going on a killing spree, their ID's obscured by unknown means. The Western Federation execs flee, but the victim remains seated as he speaks to Tristan Wu, who then nods to the female Tao-Jinn Agent, the woman drawing a Poseidon Ion Blade before slashing.

The video ends with an alert about the connection being hacked and cuts out as Tristan Wu fires a gun into the corpse.

What the hell is this? This is acid! Nuclear waste! If your team had been less professional and more bumbling you know that you'd all be killed to keep this entire incident silent.

And then you frown at seeing KS and Gray return...without the individual you were supposed to capture.

A thought runs through your head at the possibility that Gray killed the target instead of capturing them, but you suppress it for now.

Right now, you strongly consider calling the mission over and leaving.

[Should you stay or should you go?]
Kern could not frown much harder than she currently was doing. This was beyond anything she had frame of reference for. Massaging one of her temples, she deleted the video from her computer, and straightened.

"This... This has not gone well. I'm sure you'll enjoy the debrief when we get back," frowning at KS and Gray in particular, "but as of now we are leaving. Put out that smoke and start driving us, Manjappa."

Looking around her team once again, she noticed her special member reloading her gun. That didn't bode well.

//Bailey, why are you reloading? Who did you shoot, Bailey?//

Getting into the vehicles other front seat, Kern holstered her gun again.

"Manjappa, ignore what I said. Light up if you want, so long you give me one."

"This... This has not gone well. I'm sure you'll enjoy the debrief when we get back," frowning at KS and Gray in particular, "but as of now we are leaving. Put out that smoke and start driving us, Manjappa."
Well, thank you for that. I hope whatever crawled up your butt and died does not stink up for everyone.
"I revel in misery." The older man answers sarcastically at his boss accusing him. He obediently puts out the smoke, crushing it under his heel carefully and then sets back onto the road without much delay: Albeit he does put the pack of cigarettes in front of Kern, including a lighter, eschewing to take another one himself.
.... And then tunes in another song.

//Bailey, why are you reloading? Who did you shoot, Bailey?//

Bailey briefly turned her head to look at Kern as she racked the bolt and chambered a fresh round before she answered.

//I followed orders and eliminated the target.// She replied in a detached voice, her attention already going elsewhere as she scanned the area for any further threats to their mission.

Your psychic senses pick up nothing. Whatever's going on, your team isn't under threat right at that moment
Irissa's eyes kept a slight glow as her senses were kept open for just a while longer, you couldn't be too careful when working.

Kern was dissatisfied with something, and even if she wasn't fully kept in the loop, the fact that Bailey was reloading her weapon meant something was going on.

She couldn't help but wonder if she had done something wrong. Sure, she had followed the few orders given just fine, but the way Kern was frowning made her doubt if that was enough in her eyes. Maybe if she had kept her eyes open, she would have noticed something useful.
Either way, she took a seat in the back of their car and wrapped her arms around the sniper briefcase in her lap. She had a slight frown on her face that would have been visible if not for her re-breather.

Mission 1 Complete

Before anything else can happen, you bundle into the SUV and leave the UIG to clean up the crime scene, your mission essentially complete.

The drive back to the office is quiet as you all have your own thoughts, broken only when your mission handler appears on the main screen of the office.

"Good work. I've just finished negotiating with the UIG in regards to your performance evaluation, and I have some good news for Operative Bailey Gray; your restrictions are hereby rescinded and you are now considered a full Agent of the Tao-Jinn Corporation. Do not abuse the trust placed on you."

"I also received a call from a Tristan Wu, who has provided you with a gift for your work in securing his release from UIG custody. Since Tao-Jinn has been proven not to be the guilty party in this event, I can consider your mission a success."

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

EXP Reward: 5 EXP per player
Mission Pay: 700Cr per player
Tristan Wu liberated: 1000Cr per player
UIG Evaluation: 4 Rank Points per player

"Take some time off at your desk jobs, you'll be called for your next mission soon."

With the mission over successfully and the pay distributed, the team now had a month of downtime. Bailey didn't actually need the downtime, she was more than used to running missions back-to-back after all, but that didn't mean she didn't appreciate the opportunities such time granted.

For the first week she did what she could to address the skill requirements that she had been informed she would need to reach in order to properly work for her new superiors. The task was a bit daunting she could admit to herself at least, but she would ensure she pleased her superior as much as she could. Unfortunately, her resources at Tao-Jinn were rather limited since she had only just joined, so she was only able to improve her skill at Assessing Technology.

At least she reached the threshold her superior required.

After that though, Bailey still had three more weeks of downtime to deal with so she used them as best she could to establish herself within her new environment, and that meant getting back in touch with contacts and suppliers. Or just supplier as there was really only one person Bailey went to when she wanted something that she couldn't get from her employer.

The person in question was a man by the name of Samuel Winter, and while he wasn't the most well known arms dealer, nor the most powerful, he was certainly the best in Bailey's opinion. If you had the patience and the money there was literally nothing the man couldn't acquire for a customer, up to and including a small, experimental stealth submarine.

Bailey had completed half a dozen missions from the man, mostly to eliminate potential competitors but she had also done the occasional bits of corporate espionage when asked, though whatever info she acquired had also gone to the Western Federation at the time.

Were she still with the Western Federation, Bailey would've only needed to send the man a message and payment and then she would have had what she wanted, but now that she was with Tao-Jinn she had to rebuild that connection. Middlemen had to be arrange, dead drop points decided upon, contract rates agreed to, licenses validated (or at least faked), and a whole host of other things to ensure that Bailey could get what she needed when she needed it and without the interference of the governments or the corporations.

She also completed the odd series of puzzles or questions that her new superior sent her during that three week period. Bailey never got everything right and sometimes she outright failed the tests, but she had been informed that they were merely a means of establishing her full breadth of skills and what she required further training in.

Over the course of the downtime, Bailey did make sure to spend some time doing less work related activities including checking out the apartment she had received from her new superior. She wasn't quite sure what the hell she should actually do with all the space provided by her modestly pre-furnished Medium Apartment but it'd make a good fallback point if nothing else. As such she made sure to quietly establish a decently large cache of supplies there, hidden away throughout the multi-room apartment.

Bailey spent a little bit of time interacting her new teammates, but over all she merely kept her distance and observed them, learning their habits and quirks and building a better understanding of their skills and abilities. She made deathly certain to keep her distance from Irissa though, for that part of her was long since dead, buried, and rotted away. It had died that night the firestorm had swept through the slums, taking everything she had cared for with it.

Eventually though, the four week break period was over and it was time to get back to work.

Manjappas lip turns to a smile when the downtime is announced and he comfortably stands up as well. "Been a pleasure. Personally, i will be at the "Liják" bar in a little bit to celebrate our success. Maybe in the sense of teamspirit you would like to join me?" He looks at no one particular, merely allows the offer to be heared in order to make people feel guilty later when they decide to be a-social.

Manjappas downtime was filled with what he considered "training". People watching and gaining access to established focus-groups was what he specialised in and so he went to work. The first thing to do was to gain access to Tao-Jin itsself. Not in a grand scale but a few low-key office-workers who considered the world of gossip and information a second home. Favours for favours, show interest and allow a sexual interest to gather. Text-messages with updates and little tidbits until it became a regular occurance.
Next he re-established contact with an active Agent who, in all but name, recruited him despite his advanced age. Kanchana was a professional and, unlike him, had enough pull in the Cooperation to box a man past his prime into Agent-training. On a downside she knew him too well than to advance further than taking a drink with him and he made himself no delusions: In order to land in bed with her he would have to save her life (again).
Officer Taylor of the UIG was confused and chastised after the last mission by no fault of his own. Manjappa capitalised on that confusion and anger and established a reputation with the young man, re-building his confidence in a few private meetings and gave him some tips how to handle his co-workers and superiors. The officer would learn to lean on Manjappa more heavily, opening up with information in time.
In a more private matter, Manjappa made contact with two branches of Bhuddist religious figures in his community and opened dialouge between them. While Kapil Angesh was an older man who preached peace and acceptance, his power over the community had been strained as many saw him as weak, guilable and corrupt. Chiranjeevi Dang-yo was everything Manjappa expected to stem from such a shadow: A man with a criminal record, outspoken against society and who acknowledged and supported several terrorist bombings, seeking to throw down a ditch between his own religious-social beliefs and those of others. While hard, he did find some common ground and worked actively to legitamize Dang-yo as a potential successor as community leader as well as put scrutiny on him to dampen his illegal activities.

Iris left soon after the meeting was done. She had started saving up for a certain Cybernetic that would be very helpful in future missions, and after this mission where she didn't feel like she helped much, getting something useful was a priority. It had absolutely nothing to do with that she always wanted some cool Cybernetics.
The problem was that even with her savings it wasn't enough, and unless she wanted to spend her entire free-time working (which she did not), she would need to get it cheaper somehow.

That's why she used her amazing charm and spent her first week trying to convince an employee named Itsumi Suzuki that they should be friends, and friends give discounts to each other. Somehow that actually worked and she even kept in contact with her new friend now and then.

With her new Stealthskin installed, Iris thought it was about time she tried to re-establish contact with an old friend and co-worker from when she worked as a bounty hunter, Zoya Volkov. They were both originally from Europe, her friend being from Russia. She was still in the bounty hunting business, so they both spent two weeks together bonding and earning some money.

The last week was boring and mostly spent attending UIG training to raise her Telepathics License.

Iris didn't spend much time seeing her new teammates, mostly because she was busy. She tried however on several occasions to interact with Bailey, but for some reason she avoided her like the plague. The odds of finding her again or that she even survived the slums were so low that she had written her and the others off as dead.

Now she was here and alive, but not being able to talk to her...

It hurt.

Kern spent more time than the rest of her squad in the Tao-Jin building after the end of the mission, taking care of the reports and other miscellany that cropped up in the aftermath of the mission.

However, these hours in the building also allowed her to find and reconnect with her old boss from the lapse that had occurred while she was trained to become an official Agent.

Following that, Kern had a stupid idea. Grabbing an electrosomato copy of the report, she put in in a binder, and wandered to a certain coffee shop one lunch time.

Dropping the file with a soft impact onto the table in front of the Marshal, the short agent took the liberty of sitting in the tables other chair.

"The fuck is this, Agent? Do I look like I'm on the clock right now?"

Dizet smiled at Marshal Smoke, gesturing at a waiter to make her a coffee.

"This is the report I had to file about the.. How did you put it... Corporate bullshit that occurred on your crime scene. Redacted and legally inadmissible, of course."

"What does Tao-Jin want?"

"Nothing. What I want is the pertinent question."

"Someone is ambitious."

"Says the marshal. Impressively young, Smoke."

Kern smiled, but her eyes locked onto Smokes flinty ones.

"Meet you here tomorrow? I'll buy the drinks then."

Summary :

Weeks One and Two:
8 point contact: Superintendent Atachi, Tao-Jin Internal Affairs

Weeks Three and Four:
8 point contact: UIG Marshal Smoke

The next 3 weeks of downtime oozed by in a meld of unremarkable events for Kyung-Soo. He had signed himself up for three different licensing classes/exams, the motivation coming from how he felt he had not been able to contribute much in the previous Op. The first week was spent studying for his Public Appropriations License, the second for his Robotics License, and the third week was spent on his Military Vehicle License. All the commuting done had the effect of polishing off the rust on his driving skills as well.

Sometime during the fourth and final week, KS happened to bump into an old face he hadn't seen in a long time. Jonah Kang, a former cop from Seoul turned emergency dispatcher here in Dubai after suffering a career-ending injury on the field. The two men caught up on what the other had been up to, before reminiscing loudly about former/passed friends while pub-crawling through the city.

An old bond of camaraderie, reignited.

Summary:
  • Improve Drive Skill: Lv. 1 -> Lv. 2
  1. Public Appropriations License (2) acquired
  2. Robotics License (1) acquired
  3. Military Vehicle License (3) acquired
  4. Build Contacts
    • Jonah Kang, Emergency Dispatcher (Lv 4)

It's a cloudy day when you all arrive at Kern's office for the next round of corporate assignments being handed out to Tao-Jinn's Agent stable.

The office, now that Kern has had a chance to properly use it, now appears well and truly made use of as you all take your seats while one of you starts channel surfing the Tao-Jinn media networks before a sappy, happy jingle starts to play.

"Ohayo Gomaizu! The annual Tao-Jinn MegaCon is today! We welcome the UIG and our Corporate rivals to see all the greatness that Tao-Jinn has to offer the world!"

The channel is immediately flicked to one of the new anime series coming out of Asylum AniWorks. The annual MegaCon, practically an excuse for Tao-Jinn and Poseidon to get into a competition as to which Corporation was the most 'Japanese' and that meant Cosplay, Maid Cafes, doujinshi sales, mascots, the works.

Then the TV cuts out and brings up the stony face of your briefing officer, "Upper Management has marked you to work the Convention."

And now you're going to be right in the middle of things as she continues, "To help promote several of our subsidiary companies, your gear and armour will be modified with active-wear advertising while your team does a standard security/PAR run of the main convention dome.

PAR, Public Assistance-Relations, in short you were going to be walking help desks, pointing lost people in the right direction and taking lost children to a secure area until the UIG could ping their parents. That second one was going to be critical, the MegaCon and other such large-scale yearly shows put on by Corps were a breeding ground for kidnappings by cults and of course the Corps themselves.

"You will be one of twelve teams working the floor, and you will have a minimum quota of lost children to secure in order to ensure that our security rating with the UIG doesn't drop. Upper Management also forbids you from using firearms inside the convention grounds, which means you will be required to make use of melee weaponry where appropriate, and only in the prevention of crimes. You are to avoid killing if at all possible."

She glances at each of you, "Are there any questions?"

Manjappa smiled even during them getting their mission and byond. It seemed a menial assignment with potential for lots of disaster, but part of the Test was to know when not to pick fights.
Then he picks up on a question. "Any active or known threats towards Tao-Jinn which may be of concern to a public event with lots of civilians?"

"Good to see you're on the ball Manjappa." The briefing officer remarks, "We have it on good authority that there may be an attempt to kidnap the teenage daughter of an Executive. Unfortunately, this child happens to also be a popular Tao-Jinn Idol so we can expect that the kidnapping will also be with the intent to rebrand her as a singer for one of the other Corps."

She glances off to the side momentarily, "We also have word that there may be an attempt to sabotage the ADI-902 Security Robot during it's public unveiling. Try to make sure it doesn't go like the demonstration of the ED-209."

"How close will the ADI-902 exhibit and the Daughter's stage be during the event?"

"Can they be managed by a single team with relative ease, or will the team have to split up and be far enough apart that they are unable to provide mutual support, if this Division decides to prioritize working around those two potential targets?"

"They're both booked for the same stage at different times, but one could be used as a distraction for the other so I expect to see some attention paid to backstage areas as well."

"When's the convention start? Ma'am. How long will we have to prepare before civilians start to arrive? Do you have projected number of attendees?"

Kern questioned her superior, as she idly wondered if her shoulder holster could be gotten away with.

"Projected numbers for the convention as a whole are expected to pull in over one million attendees in the first day alone, with a projected total of some 12 million over the course of the MegaCon. As for your job, it starts tonight at the midnight launch, you will be further briefed when you get to Convention City today."

A glance, "Corporate Stores will issue your modified gear or modify your gear at Convention City, you won't be pulling gear from the Tower for this."

"You will be expected to maintain your presence for a minimum of five days over the course of the 14 assigned for the MegaCon."

Iris asks no questions, but listens attentively and tries to hide her excitement. She might not admit it, but she spends a certain amount of her off-time watching several anime shows.

KS smothered a disgruntled sigh at their next mission, a security job rolled into a PR stunt, joy. It would probably be tricky ensuring the safety of two potential HVTs while doing so inconspicuously and, most likely, lightly armed. He was not at all sour about the firearms restrictions...nope.

"Ma'am, any intel on which of the rival corps are most likely to hit the HVTs?" KS asked the briefing officer, "Would hate to scrap it in CQC against Poseidon Ion Katanas or get boxed in by Western Fed crack-shots unprepped. Also, are we cleared to go loud in response to overt threats to the HVTs?"

From her seat off to the side, Bailey had remained utterly stoic through the entirety of the briefing, but as more and more questions were fielded, she couldn't help but cringe internally. She'd done one public relations mission before and the less said about how that had gone the better. As it was, they had their orders and now was the time for clarification. So she spoke up.

"Is there a minimum level of visibility we'll be required to maintain for this mission?"
