Recently reread a lot of my favorite SCPs, and I realized that Control's narrative shares many similarities with The Way It Ends, part four of hands down the best SCP-001 proposal (I will fight you!)
The Ouroborus Cycle.
And not just broad stuff like themes or Jesse's character arch and backstory, but also the specific symbols used, and even certain characters (or "characters" for The Board) are incredibly alike in role and characterization to characters in The Way It Ends, and the author's broader canon.
When I first played Control, I really loved it, and even dug the story, which many friends and critics labeled the weakest part. A common, if not
the most common complaint about it I heard, was that while the world building and side quests kinda
were "SCP, the video game" the main story somehow "wasn't SCP enough." Not knowing how similar it was to an SCP published six months prior.
So I just appreciated Control so much more when throughout the story I was making connections in the back of my head to something I already loved. Directors symbolically murdering their predecessors? Check. The Bureau's callous mismanagement of crises accidentally creating their future leaders? Check. Just... the entire deal with the Hotline? Check.
A mysterious individual with unknown capability providing essential equipment in a time of need Ahti? Check. The Board? Check, with a double helping of grimdark.
