It might be a little early to ask, but is the Brotherhood of Steel still going to be a bunch of jerks or are they going to be like the Lyon's Pride from FO3? The 180 they pulled from being the "Let's make this place safe, help the people, and learn something new!" to "We're in charge now, do what we say, hand over everything technological you have freaks, and you might get to walk away" was rather jarring. Especially when you consider that it's only ten years between the Lone Wanderer and the BoS activating Project Purity and the BoS going from MAXIMUM PALADIN to how they were in FO4.

Remember the Brotherhood Outcasts from FO3? They regard themselves as the true brotherhood and cleave to the same mentality the western chapters do. it's entirely possible that FO4's Brotherhood are derived from those outcasts.

[X] Actually, getting an extra set of turrets up wouldn't be all that helpful- they're already forming a defensive perimeter, along with the Minutemen guards. It'd be more helpful to sneak around to the buildings around the museum and reactivate any old Protectrons. It's unlikely they could find more than around half a dozen, but that would be worth nearly an entire squad of Minutemen on its own. [Intelligence/Agility, provides one squad of Protectrons]

It's stated that the FO4 BoS is the Lyons BoS under Maxson's leadership. He went fundamentalist to bring the FO3 Outcasts back onboard but that doesn't explain why the rest of the Brotherhood just went with it.

It's not that jarring. Different factions of the Brotherhood hold different views, much like different factions of national governments hold different views while still toeing a party lines.

Information about our depiction of the Brotherhood will be restricted until they appear in the quest, however.

Protectrons do not sleep, Protectrons do not eat, Protectrons do not bleed, Protectrons are disposable steel-shields that have so many uses. Including dying so that others may live.
They do not feel pity, or remorse, or fear, and they can only be stopped by destroying them. Or shutting them off. Or reprogramming them. Actually there's lots of ways to stop them, but they're adequate meat shields. And they're pretty tough against small arms.

Sometimes we must balance the needs of others and our own. We too will need medicine.

To be fair, the East Coast BoS went that direction in FO3 because of Elder Lyon's charisma and his ability to command their loyalty even if they didn't completely agree with the direction he was going. Elder Lyon's decision to not focus on tech acquisition was rather unpopular. If Sarah had lived, the mentality that Elder Lyons was advocating might have survived better and become entrenched.

While with the help of the Lone Wanderer the ECBoS won through their struggle and became the powerhouse that could build things like the giant airship, there had to have been alot of resentment that had built up during the long struggle against the seemingly endless hordes of supermutants that were attritioning the ECBoS to death for the Elder stretching the BoS thin to try to protect the people of wasteland.

Still, some elements still survive in FO4 BoS and they aren't completely dicks or have their heads stuck firmly in the sand, given their willingness to recruit a lot of wastelanders and proactively go after supermutant/raider camps that threaten settlements, in the future as the wastelanders fill more and more of their higher ranks the ECBoS may become more liberalized.

"I reckon," Nate said with a shrug of his shoulders, "more bodies is what this place needs more than anything else. And if the bodies in question are all hard and mechanical and don't bleed and don't die like real people do, that'd be just peachy."

Sturges grinned. "I like the way you think," he said. "I've never been much of a fan of bleeding and dying. As a career path, it ain't got a future in it."

"It's what you might call a dead end job," Nate counters.

"Well... wait, wait, I got it. Well, at least you're keeping the gravediggers employed."

"That's just paying people to dig holes in the ground and then fill them in."

Sturges looked blank. "I don't get that one."

Damn. Guess this nuclear wasteland didn't have a Department of Work to make makework for people when there weren't jobs around. Nate remembered seeing the work gangs from the side of the bus back when he was a kid, back when the economy was crashing from the lack of oil. "Look, just go get us some robots," he said with a sigh.

And so they did. Unlike turrets, robots were not nearly ubiquitous on the battlefront. Even Protectrons, as common as they were at home, were a rare sight at Anchorage. Every so often the 33rd would deploy with a few Mr. Gutsys, and Sentry Bots tended to stick by the checkpoints asking for ID, but the man-to-bot ratio were always upwards of two digits.

But they weren't in Anchorage. They were in Boston. And Boston had a lot of robots. Poking around the museum alone, they found a number of Protectron service models, meant to serve as curators, customer service staff, even security in a pinch. So, naturally, most of the security bots were damaged and inoperable.

"...Well," Sturges said, "At least there's a few, right?"

"I'll need one of those flathead screwdrivers," Nate replied flatly, mind churning. Going by his internal mechanic-sense, he should be able to restore four of the riot Protectrons and one of the Guardians… though that would involve scrapping all the maintenance, medical, construction, and service protectrons. And they probably don't have laser hand pistols. Ah well, it will do for now. "Actually, make that two flatheads. This will need some jury-rigging."

"I really think," Nora hissed as quietly as she possibly could, "that the fact the medical store is also a raider outpost would have been pertinent information to tell me before you snuck me halfway into their camp."

"But then you wouldn't have come," Preston countered logically. "And then I would have had to do this alone, and where would I be then? I'd be dead, that's where."

"I'd be totally fine with that right now," she shot back. "Asshole."

"You wound me," he replied dryly. "I'll apologize after we both get out of here alive, okay?"

She scowled. Ordinarily she might shoot back with another rejoinder, but no matter how irritated she was by the man's deception, it was a terrible idea to continue talking when there was a raider approaching them from scarcely fifty feet away.

As they shuffled back to half-hide behind an old upturned barrel, she quickly scanned the area. Apart from the flickering "MEDICAL PRACTICE" sign across the street shining light over the rickety fortifications over the area, and the half-rotted wooden roof that had been built across the collapsed roof of a building further up a street, there was nothing remarkable about the street.

At least it wasn't a proper military bunker, she consoled herself. This was only an outpost, one of several buildings likely built at key chokepoints around the raider's headquarters proper. When she and Preston had first approached it, she'd quickly taken stock of the number of raiders here (five), the state of their equipment (shoddy ballistic vests and weaponry that looked like it had been built in a garage), and any weak points in their fortification (she'd lost track at thirty-two).

Honestly, if it weren't for the fact that there were likely other raiders in earshot, she'd just incapacitate the five of them and operate without worry. But there were, so stealth it was.

When the raider had passed them far enough to be out of earshot, she turned back to Preston. "What are we even here to take?" Despite the raider's distance from them, she still spoke lowly. "If there's a raider outpost here, wouldn't they have taken all the medical supplies already?"

He shook his head, peering out over the barrel and scanning for any approaching raiders. When he didn't see any, he scurried over the barrel, waving for Nora to follow him across the road. "No," he told her when she scurried to catch up with him. "This place was looted a long time ago, and not many pre-war supplies would have survived this long anyway. We're not looting the place; we're looking for a stash my old commander hid here."

She raised her eyebrows. "Your old commander hid a stash here?"

"He hid stashes in a lot of places. He was kind of paranoid." A noise further up the road made the two of them quickly dash across the road, suppressing a slight wince when Nora's foot hit a chunk of glass and sent it skittering across the floor. When whoever it was hadn't come to investigate a few minutes later, they both breathed a sigh of relief.

Nora broke off from her position behind Preston, moving slowly behind a desk positioned conveniently away from the front door. Preston himself ducked further into the building mere moments before the raider whose footfalls had alerted them earlier walked past, peering casually into the buildings as she went.

Counting slowly to ten and straining her ears for any sounds of further movement, Nora quickly followed Preston deeper into the building, through an old operating room and into an office.

Before she could speak, Preston moved over to a bookcase and knelt down, pulling aged books off the bottom two shelves. "It's hard to hide a stash that's big enough to actually be useful," he said conversationally. "Most of the obvious places are too obvious, it's too easy for raiders or scavengers to find them before we return, and things like safes are obvious targets for anyone half-decent at breaking into old computer systems."

"My boss didn't want to risk it, so he had the habit of burying his stashes."

And, sure enough, beneath the bottom row of books laid a thin plank of wood, nailed to the floor. It took a bit of effort for the two of them to quietly pull the nails out, but once they managed it, Preston pulled it away to reveal a hole in the ground, no wider than Nora's wrist.

"Go find something we can carry all this in." Preston reached in, beginning to pull out a small pile of stimpacks. "I know I should have brought a bag, but we didn't have any that weren't being used already, sorry."

--------------

"...'M-41-Z-3'." Nate shook his head and sighed. "Someone at RobCo. had entirely too much fun at the assembly line."

"My friend," Sturges laughed, clapping Nate on the back as he finished screwing the panel back on, "You are a true-blue magician! I don't know a guy who could put machines back together like that! How'd you know about that trick with the circuit board and the--"

"Trial and error," Nate replied quickly. Not like he got it from an old buddy that worked in RobCo. Nope. Just good old brain and experimentation. Even though the last time he touched a robot was Codsworth, and that was just to follow the instructions and flip the 'On' switch. "Well, that should do the trick. Wanna do the honors?"

Sturges shook his head, smiling. "You fixed them, you do it. I'll just be here, wondering how you do it."

Nate shrugged and pushed the button. No ceremony to it or anything. Just a thing to be done.

Soon enough the first Protectron lit up, thrumming and humming as its processor sparked to life, and regarded the pair. [Protectron Guardian 57-RYP-614, Initialising. Welcome to the Museum of Freedom, fellow American. How do I serve?]

--------------

The bag Nora found wasn't particularly big, but neither was the stash, containing a few handfuls of stimpacks and RadAway. By the way Preston had been talking it up, she had expected more, but it would still be helpful.

Leaving the raider outpost had been easier than getting into it- the single lookout on a tall building on the cornet was barely paying attention, only occasionally scanning the street for signs of movement.

Still, she supposed, she had to thank her lucky stars that they'd been the only ones along. Preston was at least competent in stealth. Imagining the clusterfuck that could have emerged if they'd brought others along and it had turned into a firefight gave her a headache.

"Well," Preston said at length when they finally made it back to the Museum, "it was nice working with you, Nora."

"It was," she said coolly, "although I'd still appreciate it if you would inform me before asking me to sneak into hostile territory next time."

He nodded contritely. "Absolutely," he said apologetically. "I'm sorry about that, by the way. I was pretty sure you were telling the truth, but I had to know that you weren't with the raiders, and we really did need those supplies."

She begrudgingly accepted the apology. "Just don't do it again," she said shortly. "Trust is a two-way street."

Preston looked confused, but accepted the concession himself.

October 2287: Battle for Concord (Stage 1)
Event Time

Due to the nature of the narrative of Commonwealth Quest, large events such as the upcoming one necessarily cannot take place from the perspective of the characters involved in them.

As such, this mission- The Battle for Concord- will act as a tutorial for large-scale events.

Typically, large-scale events like these will be comprised of multiple stages, representing the ebb and flow of battles like these. Players will be offered votes at each of these stages, representing the deployment of their forces during battles and providing orders to each of their squads.

The view will then swap back down to the major characters during the updates themselves, allowing us to continue the narrative of the quest without bogging you down in large-scale planning details.

This is an experiment, and is subject to change if it turns out to be too confusing or annoying to play, so all feedback is welcome, and if it turns out to be too frustrating we'll drop it in favour of a different system.

Still, for now, let's get on with the Battle for Concord.

Surprise Round

It's currently nighttime out, and a radstorm is rolling into town. With the raider presence in town swelling, and one of the two raider groups knowing the Minutemen's tactics and likely escape procedures, Preston believes that the refugee's situation in Concord is growing increasingly tenuous.

As such, Preston has made a simple proposition; the Minutemen are going to launch a preemptive attack against the Raider forces in town, and in doing so, hopefully scatter them enough to let the refugees escape tomorrow.

Will Nora accept Preston's proposition?

[] No. Rescuing Shaun must be her priority. The Minutemen can do just fine without her help, anyway. Option denied due to Empathetic perk.
[] Yes. Rescuing Shaun is important, but the Minutemen are going to risk their lives in combat to save innocent refugees. She can't turn her back on them.

Will Nate accept Preston's proposition?

[] No. Rescuing Shaun must be his priority. His wife is skilled; she and the Minutemen will do well enough on their own. He can take advantage of the chaos to find a terminal to plug Codsworth's memory chip into. [Denies the use of Nate throughout the Battle for Concord, but finishes the Task "Access Codsworth's Memory Banks" afterwards.]
[] Yes. Rescuing Shaun is importnat, but the Minutemen- and, more importantly, his wife- are going to risk their lives in combat to save innocent refugees. He will not turn his back on them.

Who is going to participate in the pre-emptive strike on the first group of Raiders, the group that is not believed to have any ex-Minutemen currently in service?

[] The first group of Minutemen, led by Preston. This group is a motley group comprised of unwounded Minutemen and eager trainees from the refugee group. It's not ideal, but they all have weapons, and some of the Minutemen even have their armour still. [Minuteman Group 1]

[] The second group of Minutemen, led by Nora. This group is a patchy group comprised of the Minutemen recalled from scouting Concord and half-healed soldiers treated by Nora. It's not ideal, but they all have scavenged armour taken from dead raiders and weaponry that should hold up. [Minuteman Group 2]

I've a question, what's the general sentiment Nora/Nate picked up on the ex-minutemen they're fighting?
The general sentiment depends on the person. Preston, along with some of the other Minutemen, seem mostly regretful that some Minutemen have defected to the Raiders, while other Minutemen have expressed very negative sentiments about them.

In Preston's opinion (and Sturges, and Mike the Entrance Guard too), how do the defector Minutemen compare in quality to most 'Raiders'?

In Preston's opinion (and Sturges, and Mike the Entrance Guard too), how do the defector Minutemen compare in quality to most 'Raiders'?
In Michael's opinion, the Minutemen would likely be better trained than regular Raiders. He'd probably rate them at being about the same quality as your typical Gunner- they've received fairly extensive training, and would have the decent sense to maintain their weapons and armours to a more-than-useable standard. If he had access to his regular equipment, he wouldn't be too worried, but he'd probably call them about equal to him and the other Minutemen right now.

In Sturge's opinion, "I don't damn well know, I'm a mechanic, not a soldier".

In Preston's opinion, the biggest assets that ex-Minutemen would bring to the field would be their morale, their discipline, their equipment, and their knowledge of the Minutemen's training. In large part, the ex-Minutemen are probably singularly inferior to a given Minuteman, but their skills and training have paid off in that they would probably have their Raiders carrying similar morale-building activities to the Minutemen, have similar tactics, and make sure to maintain their equipment much better than regular Raiders.

Again, in Preston's opinion; his Minutemen are acting at a severe disadvantage right now. The raiders outnumber him numerically, and significantly outgear him. That's why Preston is striking by surprise during the advent of a radstorm, and it's why he's willing to work with people he's never met before. He's taking advantage of every tactical asset he has, even knowing that it's an enormously risky move.

These Minutemen are unlike ours: they aren't ragged by having to flee for weeks, they are intimately familiar with conventional Minutemen tactics, they've got much stiffer spines and better training than the raiders.

And by taking the Protectrons, who are immune to radiation, we can keep pushing them even when/if the Radstorm hits at full force and Preston's squad has to fall back.

Preston, in turn, is the one who knows their tactics the best, and as such is most suited to lead the strike against them. Nora and her folks can do casevac

Take a look at Preston's laser-musket - and by take a look, I mean fix it, because the dude is going to need a weapon capable of putting out more than one shot every twenty seconds or so, and one that can slice into combat armor and the people who wear it at that.

"I'm going to be blunt," Preston says, pacing up and down in front of an old blackboard he's sketched his plans on. "We're in a bad place. A very bad place. We're outnumbered, outgunned, and we're protecting the innocent. But we're the Minutemen. That's our duty. That's what makes us better than the jet addicts and psychos out there, who'd sell out their mothers for a hit. That's why when it comes down to do or die, we do.

"And how do you cut down a tree? Do you bang your head into it repeatedly? Do you climb up it and start trying to peel off the branches? Or do you get a sharp axe and cut it off at the base! Well, we're going to be the sharp axe! We have Rad-X. We have robots! And we have the element of surprise. They won't see us coming. Tonight, we're going after one of the groups. And under the cover of darkness, we're going to wipe them out. We are going to crush the traitors.

"We're going to kill every last one of them, trap them between our forces and cut them down if they try to run for help. If they're all dead, they won't be able to stop us. They won't be able to help the scum out there. Our enemies won't have their training and they won't have the morale. With the radstorm booming overhead, they won't hear the gunshots that kill them. Remember - the men and women out there who used to be Minutemen are not our friends anymore. They spat on that friendship. Remember what we saw in Cambridge. Remember it was them doing it. They're traitors. They're Benedict Arnolds.

"We have refugees relying on us. And the more of us that go, the less chance each of us will be hurt. They're cowards, after all. They burned their oaths to the Minutemen and ran away like babies because they were scared. We, on the other hand, are not babies. We are men and women who are making a choice. We're going to wipe them out tonight and open a hole in their defences. The other Raider scum won't be able to surround us - and might not even realise that we're now controlling their allies' hideout until it's too late. This is our best chance for living to see next week. Make sure they don't.

"Now, yes, you might be saying 'Preston, you're crazy to attack when it's radding out there'. Well, it's true, no sensible Minuteman would do this normally - so they won't be expecting us. But you all know your training. You know how to keep safe. We're far enough away from the Glowing Sea up here that the radlightning won't be the killer. No, it'll be the black rain and we know how to deal with that. Cover up, cover your mouth and nose and wear goggles so you don't go blind from looking at the lightning. The Rad-X will help. And we know too well that a single radstorm won't kill you. But if the Raiders get their hands on us tomorrow, they'll kill us slowly. So me, I'd rather take my chance with the glow."

Will any of the Hero Units (Nate, Nora, Preston) take any special actions this turn?

[X] Preston - Give a speech and try to lessen any guilt or feelings of shame for attacking people who used to be Minutemen.
[X] Nora - Take what she's learned from the scouts and devise a best line of attack on a fortified position, based on what she knows of that place

The ex-Minutemen are a much greater threat than the regular Raiders, and while I don't like keeping raider group 2 untouched, we'll have to deal with it to accept lesser casualties.

[x] Yes. Rescuing Shaun is important, but the Minutemen are going to risk their lives in combat to save innocent refugees. She can't turn her back on them.
[x] Yes.

[x] The second group of Minutemen, led by Nora. This group is a patchy group comprised of the Minutemen recalled from scouting Concord and half-healed soldiers treated by Nora. It's not ideal, but they all have scavenged armour taken from dead raiders and weaponry that should hold up. [Minuteman Group 2]

Who, if anyone, is going to participate in the pre-emptive strike on the first group of Raiders, the group that does have at least half a dozen ex-Minutemen currently in service?

[x] The first group of Minutemen, led by Preston. This group is a motley group comprised of unwounded Minutemen and eager trainees from the refugee group. It's not ideal, but they all have weapons, and some of the Minutemen even have their armour still. [Minuteman Group 1]
[x] The band of Protectrons, programmed by Nate and Sturges. It's not the largest group, but not only are they tougher than the squishy humans, they're also immune to radiation. [Protectron Unit 1]

[x] Nate
Take a look at Preston's laser-musket - and by take a look, I mean fix it, because the dude is going to need a weapon capable of putting out more than one shot every twenty seconds or so, and one that can slice into combat armor and the people who wear it at that.

I like Cornuthaum's plan better overall. But I am going to also adopt the actions for Preston and Nora while I'm at it.
