Commonwealth Quest

War… War never changes.

Before the world died with the light of the atom, I was a soldier in the American Army. I fought in the Sino-American War. I fought to reclaim Alaska from the Chinese, for the last untapped reserves of crude oil in the world. I fought alongside my countrymen, and watched them die not for their country, not for their ideals, but for resources.

Years of consumption had lead to shortages of every major resource. The entire world unravelled. Peace became a distant memory. Conflict became daily existence, no matter how much the United States of America tried to pretend otherwise. Nuclear War was an inevitability, no matter the advances in technology or how many boots they put in China. I knew this, and so did my wife. The both of us fought in Alaska. Hell, I met here there, and she's the reason why I discharged myself from the service.

In our eyes, the end of the world was looming closer and closer with every tick of the clock, and when the hand struck twelve, everything would be swept away in the light of nuclear hellfire. But there was always a faint hope that with the advent of fusion power, these wars would soon come to an end.

Oh, how wrong we were.

The Male Survivor
The Male Survivor of Vault 111 is a man out of time, with nothing and nobody to rely on but his wife and his own wits. But before the bombs fell, he was a soldier, and he was someone who served America with distinction.

The Male Survivor's Name
[] Write-In

The Male Survivor's Past
[] The Survivor served with the 442nd Infantry Battalion as a Sergeant, and was amongst the first units deployed to retake Anchorage from the chinese invaders. He fought early on, before the introduction of Power Armor, and saw many men and women die in the gruelling campaign to follow.

[] The Survivor was deployed with the 33rd Armored Cavalry, amongst the first units to be equipped with the new T-45 Power Armor, and was instrumental to breaking the chinese grip upon Alaska. He would later serve a tour in China, newly-equipped with T-51 Power Armor, before retiring from service.

[] The Survivor was a scout and a sniper, trained to spot and shoot while far from friendly lines and while virtually invisible. He was amongst the first units deployed to Alaska, forward of the American advance, and wrecked havoc as an infiltrator, saboteur, and sniper.

[] Though the Survivor was a soldier by trade, he was also responsible for the lives of the men in his company, and he was instrumental in saving the lives of many a man in the Sino-American War. However, while a medic and equipped as one, the Survivor was more than capable of fighting back. The Chinese were relentless, and did not abide by the rules of war.

[] The Survivor was deployed with the 33rd Armored Cavalry, but not as one of those clad in T-45 Power Armor. Rather, he was taught to repair and maintain those suits, amongst other pieces of American machinery and combat robotics, and became exceptionally skilled at his job.

The Female Survivor
The Female Survivor of Vault 111, while not as versed as her husband in the art of war, is nonetheless ready to survive in the post-apocalyptic Commonwealth. She served in the military to pay off her College loans, and the skills she learned two hundred years ago will serve her well in the days to come.

The Female Survivor's Name
[] Write-In

The Female Survivor's Past
[] Prior to enlisting in the American Army, the Survivor had attended a moderately prestigious university in Chicago, where she had attained a degree in Social Services. Her talents had always laid in the area of people management, and spending more than a decade in various project and people management roles has found her acting as though managing people is second nature- a skill that will surely be of great assistance in the post-apocalyptic Wastelands.

[] The Survivor was always good with machines- designing them, building them, and fixing them. After her time spent in the army, the Survivor had moved on to projects both bigger and better than any the Army had assigned her to. These skills, once merely a hobby turned livelihood, will serve her well in the Wastelands.

[] Architecture had always been a passion of the Survivor. Whether working on small-scale projects for a family or large-scale projects for an apartment building to house dozens, she had always gone above and beyond. In the Wasteland, the rules might seem different- but everyone still needs roofs over their head and food in their stomachs.

[] Robotics was a difficult art. Bridging the gap between engineering and programming, the designing and production of robots from Mr. Handy to Sentry Bots was not something that afforded a lot of mistakes. While the Survivor may not have been the brains behind the operations, her skills and steady hands were nonetheless an important asset- and will be again in the wild Wastelands.

[] The biological arts have always been an integral part of modern life. Comprising everything from the development of medicines to the synthesizing of drugs to the production of genetically modified foods, biology is one of the most important sciences there is. While the search for knowledge on the biological sciences has mostly died out in the Wastelands, the necessity of their practical uses has not. The Survivor's skills will most certainly be appreciated.

[] A source of contention even before the Great War, the nuclear sciences were at once the pinnacle of human innovation and the progenitor of their own destruction. Nonetheless, even the denizens of the Wastelands must acknowledge the myriad benefits that power can bring to their lives. Harnessing the knowledge of nuclear power, the Survivor's skills are at once of immense benefit and a source of contention amongst the wastelanders.

GM Note: Right, so here's what's going to happen. This is a quest that I'm running (obviously) and that is being co-run by @Tempera (less obviously), and it's going to be a quest about rebuilding civilisation in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, except unlike most wastelands it also has a little bit of Blade Runner to it. The setting will be Fallout 4... plus several major differences.

First off: Both survivors live. They both survive Vault 111, and they both go on to rip the Wasteland apart in an attempt to find their son.

Second o--wait, no, from this point on that would be spoilers. Well, they'll happen as they happen. Join me, won't you?

First in, last out, anywhere, any place. It's just good that he didn't have to use power armor to suppress riots in the United States - and instead used it to crush the commies.

Born to a cook and a waitress in one of Boston's poorer districts, Nate rose above his station in life when he enlisted with the Army shortly before the health inspectors shut down his parent's restaurant over accusations of violations of fire safety, workplace health and safety and radiological safety codes.

A proud patriot and charismatic young man, Nate threw himself into the Sino-American war with gusto. Hated and loved by his instructors in equal measure for his uncanny ability to cause mischief and procure alcohol (he always knew someone who knew someone, it seemed) while maintaining a firm grasp on 'his' men to prevent the mischief from escalating, Nate was posted with the 33rd Armored Cavalry as the unit underwent rapid expansion in preparation for the next push against ChiCom lines.

Issued T-45 power armor due to his exceptional physical fortitude as his squad's heavy, Nathaniel Jorgenssen dove in and out of the Alaskan trench lines. He even made it into the Boston Bugle front-page once, a photo shot of him striding over the ridge of a trenchline, heavy flamer in hand washing flame over terrified ChiCom troopers.

During this time, Nate met his future wife, Eleanor Merrick, a maintenance technician and mechanical engineer attached to the 33rd AC. Though their initial meetings were tempestous ("What do you mean 'which idiot bollocked up the knee joint on this armor so badly', woman? Do you know how hard it is to kick dents into tank barrels?" "Oh, really? What about shooting them with your missile launcher you glory-hounding imbecile!"), Nate and Nora fell in love, as young people are wont to do.

Mustering out in early October 2073 after his Gobi tour, Nathaniel went into local politics on a platform heavily built around his hero-image as a True American Patriot and decorated war hero, charming the great majority of Concord's politically-minded citizens to his side.

And then the world ended.

True love can bloom on the battlefield - or rather, when you fixed your husband-to-be'ss power armor after he returned from crushing commies.

The third of four children, Nora was the only one who survived the Sino-American War. Growing up in the hissing, clanking automobile enthusiast workshop her parents ran, Nora learned from the youngest age how to dual-wield tools, fixing and tuning up cars with one hand while beating thieves, miscreants and her brothers about the ears with the other.

It was her brothers that got Nora into the military - when her eldest brother, Jack, received his draft notice, the other three Merrick children volunteered within the same week. Due to her exceptional intelligence, organizational skills and intuitive grasp of machinery, Eleanor was assigned to one of the most prestigious units in the Alaskan theater, the 33rd Armored Cavalry, where she quickly made herself indispensable with the Heavy troopers.

Nobody else could do quite as much with powered armor as she could - frames that were given up on by other technicians as unsalvageable were restored to working order. She calibrated motive servos to provide response times almost perfectly tuned to each individual wearer and was integral to maintaining team spirit and morale amongst the engineers when the 33rd was deployed to the Gobi Desert, as the brutal climate conditions wore on the new T-51b suits.

When she retired from military service after the Gobi tour together with Nate, she took up work in one of the Red Rocket automobile shops in downtown Lexington after a vicious disagreement with the working standards and practices of the Red Rocket proprietors near Sanctuary Hills.

Power armor is life, power armor is love.

Also, my working theory is the Solo Survivor is the same sort of murderous crazy that Fallout megacorps are ruled by. Except that they fit right into Fallout's murder-ific society.

Note that every single Male Survivor option knows how to use Power Armor - seriously it's not that hard, the main protags of Fallout 1 and 2 (who, notably, is a fucking tribal) could use it without training - and so does the Female Survivor.

The question is whether Nate can just walk around and shoot like the Terminator, or if he can make it tapdance and do a Raiden*.

*Doing a Raiden is actually impossible, this isn't Metal Gear, this is Fallout.

GM. This quest has taken my most fond wish for Fallout 4 and made it reality.

You are an awesome person, in Every regard, yes.

In an empire building game we're going to need to be able to take and hold homes and resources, so I want the male survivor ready to provide a beatstick for us. Out of the Power Armour and Infantry options, especially with the knowledge he's power armour trained either way, I think this is more valuable over time. Him individually being a killing machine would be damn useful for clearing out settlements and retrieving cool loot but him being able to effectively lead and train up common troopers could be a strategic advantage for our entire community. He can't be everywhere at once after all, and eventually when our holdings are expansive enough we will be depending on our subordinates. Why not have them be trained up by a veteran NCO who doesn't want to see anymore of his people die on him dammit?

The scout, medic and engineer option run into similar problems with scale in my mind as well but more than that (for the medic option especially) I think the skillsets are much more easily substituted for than the wife's are. There are other sneaky fucks in the wasteland we can hire, there are lots of good doctors out there and there are some talented hands on engineers to be found. The male survivor might be uncommonly good at these things but the options aren't now-rare or lost skills like the wife's could be and soon enough we'll need a bunch of each. Nate may as well focus on securing the specialists time, space and resources to hone, and train others, in their skills.

I'm not as opinionated about the female survivor vote. They all seem like developable assets with interesting story implications to me but I like the versatility leadership skills bring. If she was extremely skilled at something then the incentive is to focus on getting hold of whatever material or site she needs to make use of that skill while if she's a manager then our most basic resource in any empire building is the thing she's really good with. We're getting the benefits of her skills by default, we have one of our characters as the administrative leader of the community and we probably get some boost to finding and properly employing specialist NPCs on all our projects.

Well we aren't going to have it at the beginning.

Besides I figured that fighters/soldiers are a dime a dozen in the 'New' Commonwealth. People that actually know how to maintain/fix the various bits of high end technology that gets found? A lot rarer.
I think the difference between 33rd Power ARmored Trooper and 33rd Maintenance Engineer is that the latter is exceptionally good at the job rather than being adequate.

Let's rebuild and rule the Wasteland with ROBOTS and SCIENCE!

This based on because I love Codsworth and Curie (and Ironsides) as characters in game and think the Wasteland would be a better place if we can make a lot more robots like them to help rebuild civilization.

Not with that attitude

Hope that when we most likely help set up the settlement in Sanctuary Hills we could repurpose the Vault to something useful like storage or something.
