Amelia Watson and Kureiji Ollie are unexpectedly time-warped into the Boston Commonwealth, 2287 A.D.
Intro and Rules
COMMONWEALTH CASEFILES
A HOLOLIVE/FALLOUT 4 CROSSOVER QUEST
You are Amelia Watson, time travelling detective and live-streamer. While out pursuing a case with your partner, your time travelling pocket watch suffered a malfunction and flung you both into a strange timeline.

Now separated from your partner, you must try to find her and a way to fix your damaged watch. But it won't be easy.

Because here in the ruins of Boston...

War never changes.

Now, let's see where you've ended up...

Select a Starting Point:

[X] Outside Diamond City
[] Boston Common
[] Graygarden

Rules
  1. If Amelia or one of her companions die, her pocket watch will automatically reset things to a point shortly before the last encounter. I don't want to have to end the quest early because of a bad roll.
    • However, Amelia cannot use her watch manually. Failed speech checks and decisions leading to reputation damage are set in stone.
    • Also, only Amelia and her time traveling companion retain their memories of these failed attempts.
  2. Skill levels increase through use, much like the Elder Scrolls series. Perks are not chosen, but are instead unlocked through certain actions that result in Amelia or her companions learning them. For example, using a lot of scoped weapons will develop the Steady Aim perk, or a character might teach Amelia the Awareness perk when asking about a creature's weak points.
    • Some perks aren't able to be taught. Perks such as Aquagirl or Adamantium Skeleton count as Mutations, and are instead unlocked randomly through high radiation exposure.
  3. Combat encounters will not use dice rolls. There is a chance of failure depending on the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stat associated with each choice, but succeeding will put experience points towards that stat. Speech checks do require a dice roll.
  4. Certain mods for Fallout 4 will be treated as canon to this quest's version of the Commonwealth. Who even plays vanilla Fallout 4 anymore, am I right?

Amelia Watson - Character Profile

"That's right, I'm not just a detective… I'm a time traveler! Watch this!"
Name: Amelia Watson

Gender: Female

Species: Human

Age: 19

Height: 4' 11"

S.P.E.C.I.A.L. Scores:
  • Strength: 3
  • Perception: 8
  • Endurance: 3
  • Charisma: 8
  • Intelligence: 9
  • Agility: 4
  • Luck: 10
Traits and Perks:
  • Wild Wasteland: Unleashes the most bizarre and silly elements of post-apocalyptic America. Not for the faint of heart or the serious of temperament.
Arsenal:
  • "Hardboiled Handgun"
    • Your signature revolver that you brought with you to the Commonwealth. It deals bonus damage to criminals like raiders and triggermen.
  • Pocket Watch
    • A gift from Ouro Kronii, the Warden of Time. Ordinarily, it allows the user to travel through time at will, but it's currently experiencing a malfunction that has locked most of its abilities. It has an automatic time reversal function still unlocked, activated when it detects your or an ally's death. This allows you to adjust your strategy to avoid such an outcome.
Weaknesses: Despite everything you've been through in your adventures, you're still only human. Anything that can hurt a normal person will hurt you too. You also have the same chance of developing addictions to chems and alcohol. In addition, time traveling so much has caused you to develop a rather frightening mental condition called Multiversal Dissociation Disorder. Thinking too hard about the nature of the multiverse causes your mind to feel like it's being clouded with static as your thoughts spiral downward on whether you are truly unique or special among the countless other Amelia Watsons in existence. Thankfully, Ollie manages to be your rock when you have a particularly bad episode. (Shoutout to Dr_Fanatic on AO3 for coming up with this idea as well as turning me into a shameless Amelia/Ollie shipper!)

Well, this will certainly be interesting! I was not expecting a pick-your-own-adventure format, but I'm down. Not knowing much of anything about Fallout, let's go with... Diamond City. (I'm also glad I could infect your mind with the Amollie ship, lol. I just made this account, so I don't know how this site works, but I'll do my best to follow along every so often! Can't wait to see what you do with those two!)

Aaaaaaaaa I'm so glad you're here! Just so you know, you're supposed to format your vote like this:

[Edited so I don't accidentally count my own example vote]

This way, the vote tallying software will be able to identify and count it.

1.1 WAKE UP (Grab a Brush and Put a Little Make Up)
[X] Outside Diamond City

"Uuuugggghhhhhh..."

You groan and begin to sit up, your head throbbing dully. Typical side effect of an unexpected time jump, you note. You should probably make sure you still have all your mental faculties.

Alright, first things first: My name is Amelia Watson. Still remember my name, that's always good. I'm a time traveling detective and a livestreamer for Hololive. So far so good... My partner and girlfriend is Kureiji Ollie, who... Wait.

OH MY GOD, WHERE'S OLLIE?!

As soon as that realization hits you, you frantically look around for your undead companion. There's no trace of her nearby, but you feel something gripped tightly in your palm. It's the black ribbon Ollie usually has tied in a bow around her right wrist. You remember now; when you were both caught in that sudden time warp, you'd tried to grab onto Ollie's hand. The temporal flux had pulled her from your grip, however, and you'd been left with this ribbon. You do some quick calculations: Based on how fast you were moving through the time vortex and the time between your separation from Ollie and your landing, you estimate the zombie arrived here...

[] A month before you.
[] A week before you.
[X] A day before you.

... Feeling confident in your answer, you stand up and begin taking in your surroundings. If you're going to be looking for your girlfriend, you should probably get the lay of the land, right? You look around and note that the city you're in looks like... Well, it looks like shit. Some buildings are mostly collapsed, some are missing entire walls, and there's not a single intact window on the entire street as far as you can tell. You're reminded of a trip you took to London in the aftermath of the Blitz. Come to think of it, when are you, anyway? You pull out your trusty pocket watch to check the date and are alarmed to see how damaged it is. Clearly, you and Ollie weren't going home anytime soon. Shaking that grim thought from your mind, you see that your watch lists the current date as October 23, 2287. There's nothing telling you where you are, but that's usually easy enough to figure out on your own.

"What do you mean you can't open the gate? Stop playing around, Danny! I'm standing out in the open here, for crying out loud!"

That sounds like a decent place to start. You follow the shouting until you come upon a large stadium with a woman standing outside arguing with someone on the other end of an intercom. "I got orders not to let you in, Ms. Piper. I'm sorry. I'm just doing my job," the voice on the intercom says with a resigned, weary tone that implies this isn't the first time he's received such orders.

The woman scoffs. "'Just doing your job?' Protecting Diamond City means keeping me out, is that it? 'Oh look, it's the scaaary reporter!' BOO!" She wiggles her fingers sPoOoKiLy as she says this, despite the intercom lacking a camera to see it. Still, it gets a small snicker out of you, causing the woman to give you a slight glare out of the corner of her eye.

"I'm sorry, but Mayor McDonough's really steamed, Piper. Sayin' that article you wrote was all lies. The whole city's in a tizzy," the guard explains. He seems to be genuinely apologetic, at least.

Piper inarticulately shouts in frustration. "I live here! You can't just lock me out!" Sighing, she turns to you and gets a mischievous glint in her eyes. The last time you saw that kind of look, it was on another Amelia. "Psst! You want in to Diamond City, right?" She whispers to you conspiratorially.

You blink before putting on a confident smirk. "I just got here, but yeah. What's the plan?"

"Just play along, alright?" The apparent journalist says before speaking louder. "W-what's that? Oh, you're a trader from Quincy? You've got enough supplies to keep Myrna stocked up for a whole month? Huh." She grins and calls over her shoulder towards the speaker. "Ya hear that, Danny? You gonna let us in or are you gonna have to explain to crazy Myrna about why you turned down all these supplies?"

Her "acting," if it can be called that, was incredibly phony-sounding. There's no possible way the guard would be dumb enough to--
The intercom crackles to life and the guard audibly sighs on the other end. "Geez, alright Piper. No need to make it personal. Gimme a minute."

... What.

Piper motions for you to follow her as the giant metal gate slowly slides up. "Let's head on inside before ol' Danny catches onto the bluff. Oh, and there's the welcoming committee..."

As you follow her, you notice a handful of armed guards wearing umpire pads and masks, and one very angry looking man wearing a pristine tan suit and a matching fedora. He storms up to meet you. "PIPER! Who let you back inside?! I told Sullivan to keep that gate shut!" He growls. "You devious, rabble-rousing slanderer! The level of dishonesty in that paper of yours! I should have that printer scrapped for parts!"

Piper glares daggers at the man you assume is the mayor that "Danny" mentioned earlier. "Ooo, is that a statement, Mr. McDonough? 'Tyrant mayor shuts down the press!'" She turns to you. "Why don't we ask the newcomer? Do you support the news? 'Cause the mayor's threatening to throw free speech in the dumpster!"

Put on the spot, you only manage an inarticulate "uuuhhhhh" before the mayor jumps in.
"Oh, erm, I didn't mean to bring you into our little argument, miss," he begins, straightening his tie and composing himself. Politicians need to keep up appearances after all, no matter what time period it is. "No no no. You look like Diamond City material! Welcome to the great green jewel of the Commonwealth. Safe. Happy. A fine place to come, spend your money, settle down." He flashes you a typical "used car salesman" smile and gestures towards Piper dismissively. "Don't let this muckraker tell you otherwise, all right?"

Piper snorts in response, which the mayor ignores. "Now, was there anything you're specifically looking for in our fine city?"

You think it over, considering what to say. "Well, since you're asking, I could use supplies, information regarding the whereabouts of my missing girlfriend, someone who can fix my broken watch, aaaand... A pony." You smirk. Both Piper and the mayor stare at you blankly, with the former snapping out of it first.

"Another missing person report? Well, don't bother asking Diamond City Security for help. They tend to shrink away whenever they're asked about stuff like that," she says. The mayor hurries to defend himself.

"Don't listen to her. While I am afraid our security team can't follow up on every new case that comes to them, I'm confident you can find someone to help you here. One of our great citizens can surely find the time to assist you."

You think for a moment before responding. "A mayor of such a great city's gotta know everyone, right? Is there anyone in particular that you think could help me?"

[Speech check succeeded]

The mayor blinks and begins stammering. "Well, there is one private citizen... Nick Valentine, a detective of sorts. He specializes in tracking people down, usually for debts and whatnot." He turns to leave. "Now, I must get going. My sincere apologies that Diamond City Security can't spare the time to help, but I'm sure Mister Valentine charges a reasonable fee."

Piper, not willing to let the argument end yet, interjects. "This is ridiculous! Diamond City Security can't even spare one officer to help this young girl?" She ignores your indignant protests that you're not a little girl in favor of continuing to grill the mayor. "I want the truth, McDonough! What's the real reason security never investigates this stuff?"

The mayor whirls around and points an accusatory finger at her. "I've had enough of this, Piper! From now on, consider you and that little sister of yours on notice!"

Piper scoffs. "Yeah, keep talkin' McDonough. That's all you're good for." Some people just have to get the last word in. The mayor, for his part, merely harrumphs and walks away. With the subject of her ire now out of her line of sight, she cools down and looks over at you. "I'm impressed. Not everyone can claw information out of the mayor's tightly sealed lips. Hmm... Why don't you stop by my office later? I think I just found my next story..." And with that, she walks away as well, up the stairs and into the stadium.

You don't exactly have anywhere else to go, so you follow after her. As you enter the stadium, you finally recognize where you're standing. You remember Ollie coming back from Anime Boston last year with photos of this place: Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. And now, in the middle of the field, there's a shanty town made from rusty corrugated steel and bricks, with a large marketplace smack dab in the center. Looking down, you notice Piper stop to talk to a little girl in a similar outfit to her own. You deduce that this is the little sister the mayor mentioned. In the distance, you can just barely make out a neon pink sign of a heart with an arrow through it. Going off that, it seems likely that it's the sign for Nick Valentine's agency. But where should you go first?

Okay, so there's two votes going on here. First, vote on how long Ollie has been in the Commonwealth before you got there. Second, vote on what part of Diamond City Ame should check out first. Make sure you cast a vote on both questions!

Curious how this will go when we don't have any caps.

[X] Visit Piper and see what she wanted from you

A Hololive Fallout Quest......interesting.

Anywho, A day before us means Ollie won't have gotten into as much trouble, though Nick might not have as much clues to find her.

Visiting Piper would nab us our first companion, which we'll need for the Valentine Rescue (assuming like in canon Valentine is being held hostage).

Not really sure what you mean by this. Could you be more specific?
"I'm sorry, but Mayor McDonough's really steamed, Piper. Sayin' that article you wrote was all lies. The whole city's in a tizzy," the guard explains. He seems to be genuinely apologetic, at least.

As much as I'd like to get supplies first... I don't think we have money. (Not that I know how commerce works in Fallout beyond bottlecaps.) It might do us good to make an ally first who can tell us more about this place, especially with what I read about Valentine in another comment. I wouldn't know what other options we might have beyond asking pedestrians if they've seen a woman with red hair and gray skin.

Hopefully Ollie is doing fine. Having her in a day before we arrive is a small gamble, but it might reduce her chances of being in trouble... or at least make it so she has not been in it for long. But she can probably hold her own regardless. I'm sure she's looking for us, too, if she can, which might help make the search go quicker.

1.2 Read All About It
[X] A day before you.
[X] Visit Piper and see what she wanted from you.

You decide to step into Piper's office. She'd showed a lot of spunk earlier against the mayor, and you can appreciate pissing off authority figures. As you pass by her little sister, the girl tugs on your coat. "Hey! You're the one who helped my sister get back inside, right?"

You chuckle and bend down to her eye level. "Yep! Detective Amelia Watson, at your service, miss!"

She grins at you. "You're a detective too? Just like Nicky? Well now I gotta give you a free paper! Everything on the Institute that the public needs to know!" She hands you a newspaper, the headline reading "THE SYNTHETIC TRUTH".

You smile, noting how the young girl referred to Nick Valentine by a nickname (Heh, "Nick" name,) indicating some degree of friendliness between the local detective and Piper's family. "Thanks kid. I can appreciate a fellow investigator," you reply with a wink.

This apparently was the wrong thing to say, since the girl drops her pleasant demeanor instantly. "Piper's taken, asshole. Don't try anything."

"Whoa, relax, kid! I didn't even mean it like that!" You say, holding your hands up and taking a half-step back. Piper's sister squints at you before making an "I'm watching you" gesture.

You, uh, should probably head inside now.

Upon entering Piper's office, it becomes obvious that it's also her home. There's a washing machine next to the front door, a couch, a fridge, and you can see a set of stairs leading to a small loft area. There's also an old printing press in the corner. Hearing footsteps, you see Piper coming downstairs to meet you. "Hey there! Glad you dropped by." She plops down on the couch and pats the spot next to her.

You sit down and Piper takes out a notepad and pen. "So, it should be fairly obvious by now that I want to interview you. That alright with you?" You nod and Piper continues. "Alright then. First things first, I don't think we've properly introduced ourselves. I'm Piper Wright, head writer and journalist for Publick Occurrences. And you are...?"

"Amelia Watson, private investigator. Pleased to meet ya!" You smile.

"A detective, huh? Interesting. There aren't many of those in the Commonwealth. Nick Valentine's the only one that comes to mind." Piper states, quirking an eyebrow.

You nod. "Someone has to do it. Especially since this city's security isn't all it's cracked up to be, apparently," you say with a smirk.

Piper snickers. "You trying to get me in even more trouble, Watson?" She shakes her head. "Alright, next question: Where are you from? You obviously aren't from around here. You've got that fish-out-of-water look I usually see on vault dwellers."

Probably best we not reveal everything until we can do more to prove our story. However, lying outright might end badly for us, so we should reveal some details. (We should probably also tell that girl we have a girlfriend already, lol.)

Agreed, plus considering the Institute is still out an about it's best we keep time travel to ourselves, wouldn't want word spreading about us and the Institute trying to recruit us and lord knows what they'd want to do with time travel.

Hey, I just wanted to check to see how you were doing? I'm assuming life just got busy? (Perfectly understandable if so - don't feel pressured or feel bad about it. Or if you lost motivation, that's fine, too. As long as you're doing okay.)

Yeah, sorry. I'm doing better now, and I do intend to continue this, but I caught Norovirus recently and lost motivation afterwards. I have the next part partially written, I just need to figure out how to get it to a suitable point for a vote.

1.3 An Unexpected Appearance
[X] Be vague (Namedrop Holo City but don't say much about its location or what it's like.)

You decide to twist the truth a bit. (Though a small part of you wants to take refuge in audacity and flat-out say the whole truth.)

"I'm from a place way out west called Holo City. We're pretty sheltered there, so I'm still learning a few things about life out here."

Piper tilts her head but seems to accept the answer and moves on. "You also said your girlfriend was missing when we first met. Is there anything you can tell us about her? Do you think the Institute could be involved?"

There's that name again. "The Institute." You'll have to ask Piper about them once you're done trying not to gush about your undead girlfriend.

"Well, for starters, her name's Ollie. She's really goofy and energetic, but she can also be calm and sweet when she needs to. She's... Had a rough life, so she's covered in stitches, and she's got the reddest hair you've ever seen." You sigh, staring off into space before Piper clears her throat.

"You, uh, still with me there Watson?"

"R-right. You asked if I think the Institute is behind her disappearance, but this is the second time I've heard that name and I have no idea who they are," you respond.

Piper stares at you before nodding in realization. "Right, right, 'sheltered settlement out west.' The Institute are basically the Commonwealth's boogeyman. They're a group of scientists holed up god-knows-where, and they make robots called Synths that can pass for humans. They sometimes replace people with synth copies to act like sleeper agents," she explains.

A group of scientists in Boston called "The Institute" and are expert roboticists, huh? Sounds like M.I.T. survived whatever fate befell this timeline, although you're baffled as to why they would replace people with robot doubles. Seriously, what reason could they possibly have to do that? Either way, the idea of scientists spiriting away your girlfriend is horrifying. They'd probably want to dissect her and find out how she's still alive. Of course, Ollie routinely loses limbs and gets decapitated without complaint, so dissection may not even faze her.

"Well then I certainly hope they haven't. Although, I think they'd be hard-pressed to make a synth look exactly like her. She's got so many stitches, and I'd notice if they were off by even a millimeter!" You reply with a smirk.

Piper laughs. "Well, on the off chance that she's able to see this issue, do you have anything you'd like to say to Ollie?"

"Wherever you are, stay put and try to send a message to me. In fact, send a letter to Publick Occurrences in Diamond City, Piper will let me know if she gets it. I'll find you, I promise."

Piper smiles and puts her notepad away. "A good note to end on, Watson. So, that's the interview part done. But with your permission, I'd like to come along with you to Nick Valentine's office. I've got to see how--"

She's interrupted by someone bursting through the door. "Piper, are you alright?!" A familiar voice squawks. A woman in a police uniform runs in and stops in front of the couch. She has short black hair and blue eyes with a distinct hint of yellow at the bottom of her irises. You're already very familiar with seeing alternate versions of your friends, however, so you're unfazed by the sight of Oozora Subaru standing before you. What does take you by surprise is when she sweeps Piper up in an embrace and kisses her on the cheek.

What.

"I heard McDonough locked you out of the city! I would have come by to bring you in through the Sheriff's Department, but I was on patrol and didn't hear about it until I got back! And another thing," she says, turning a stormy look upon you. Uh-oh. "Nat told me you were hitting on Piper. Is this true?"

"Oh, for fuck's sake! All I said was that I could appreciate a fellow investigator! AND I ALREADY TOLD HER I DIDN'T MEAN IT LIKE THAT!" You exclaim, burying your face in your hands. Piper simply snickers and shakes her head.

"I'm gonna have to have a talk with Nat after this. But yeah, honey, meet Amelia Watson. She's the one who helped me bullshit my way back inside. In return, I interviewed her before we head to Nick Valentine's to look for her missing girlfriend." She then turns to you and gestures towards the duck officer hugging her. "Watson, meet Officer Subaru Oozora, my girlfriend and part of the Fens Sheriff's Department. Not to be confused with the chumps over at Diamond City Security. The Sheriff's Department actually put effort into their work," she snarks, prompting a chuckle from Subaru.

You extend your hand with a smile. "Pleasure to meet you, officer. Hey, if you guys ever need a detective and Mister Valentine's unavailable, just let me know," you say.

Subaru smiles and shakes your hand. "You're a private eye, huh? We just might take you up on that, Miss Watson. Oh, a word of advice before you and Piper go see Valentine," she adds, "don't let his appearance spook you. I've worked with him before, he's a great guy despite his looks."

You raise an eyebrow at that. "I'll keep that in mind. So, shall we get going, Piper?" At her nod, the three of you head outside...

... And find a man holding another man at gunpoint.

"Don't move, synth! What've you done with the real Riley? Where's my brother?!" The gunman shouts. Before the words have even finished leaving his mouth, Subaru is already moving. She charges and elbows the man in the side of the neck, instantly knocking him unconscious.

Hearing a sigh, you glance over at Piper, who is watching the scene with a downcast expression. "That's Kyle Larson. He's known around town for being pretty unstable and paranoid. I shoulda known my article about synths could trigger this sort of response from him," she laments. You wince in sympathy.

Subaru calls over to you as she puts Larson in cuffs. "I gotta bring this guy over to a cell. You two go ahead and talk with Valentine."

You nod and look around, locating the sign you saw from the entrance. It isn't too hard to find the office from there. Walking through the doors, you and Piper find yourselves in a small room with a desk, chairs, and a number of filing cabinets along the walls. A woman with chestnut brown hair, a ratty pink skirt, a scarf, and a gray vest stands in the back off the room, her back turned to you as she looks through one of the filing cabinets. She doesn't appear to have heard you enter. "Told you your luck wouldn't last forever... Oh, Nick..." She sighs.

You open your mouth to speak, but Piper beats you to it. "Ellie? What's wrong? Where's Nick?" She asks, causing the now-named Ellie to turn around.

"Oh! Piper! Sorry, I didn't hear you come in. Who's this you brought in from the rain?" She says, glancing in your direction. You introduce yourself for the third time today and Ellie seems to perk up when you mention being a detective yourself. "Really? Then, maybe you can help me. Help Nick. See... He's gone missing."

"Nicky's gone missing?! Ellie, what happened?!" Piper exclaims in shock.

"Nick took a case involving a girl who was kidnapped by gangsters holed up in Park Street Station. Skinny Malone's gang. Nick has a colorful history with Skinny, so I felt like this was a trap. But when I tried to warn him, Nick just smiled and walked out. Like he always does..."

Gangsters? That's worrying. Your mind immediately conjures up an image straight out of a film noir movie of cigar-chomping mobsters with tommy guns. You're probably going to need more than just your revolver for this. Some more information wouldn't hurt, either. "Tell me about this Skinny Malone character," you say.

"Skinny's gang is from Goodneighbor. That means they're in the 'well-pressed suits and machine guns' school of thuggery," Ellie explains. Huh, it seems your mental image wasn't far off the mark.

"Is this 'Goodneighbor' place really that old-fashioned?" You ask.

Ellie chuckles. "It's a tough neighborhood, northeast a ways. The only things the lowlifes there care about are style and body count."

You nod, mentally making a list of supplies you'll need. "I'll find him. You have my word."

"We'll find him, you mean," Piper pipes up. You smile at her show of solidarity.

[QUEST ADDED: UNLIKELY VALENTINE]

That said, you still need a plan.

[X] Go back to Subaru and see if she's willing to help out.

[ ] You're willing to bet that your money is worthless here. Go out into the ruins and try to see if you can find anything worth selling.

[ ] Make a beeline for Park Street Station and hope your Towa-may-care attitude is enough to help you survive (NOT recommended, but hey, I'm not your dad.)

Achievements unlocked:
"SHUBA SHUBA SHUBA!" (Encounter a familiar face in Diamond City.)
"The Wright Stuff" (Gain Piper as a companion.)

Good to see this quest is still going.

And now Subaru is here, more so as an expy it seems, but now we got more Holo girls.

[X] Go back to Subaru and see if she's willing to help out.

This seems to be the best option for now, while it would be smart to get caps and buy supplies (like Stimpacks) getting Subaru at least gives us someone more fit for combat and hopefully willing to help us save Nick (plus who knows if these types of quests are actually time sensitive unlike the game).
