Code Vein - Ashes to ashes, blood to blood

Olive

Silent Princess
I'm reasonably sure that nobody actually knows anything for sure about this as of yet, but BandaiNamco look to be getting back on the wagon with... something new, apparently.

Actual details are set to be released the 20th of April, so make sure to just clench in anticipation until then.

I'm not sure what to make of it. There are a number of points both for and against this being another Soulsborne title.

On the one hand, it looks very Souls/Bloodborne. It has a lone protagonist in a ruined world, surrounded by monsters and a few people who might be sane, and the general style is very reminiscent of Bloodborne. And it's hard to make a mistake that is coincidentally a riff on "Prepare to Die," especially given how silly it is.

On the other hand, you'd think FROM would be mentioned if this was their project, given how famous they are for Soulsborne. And they are not known for characters who wear high heels into combat - they prepare more grounded character design.

My bet is that it's a non-FROM title that is trying to ride the coat tails of Soulsborne's success by going for the same general tone/atmosphere and by baiting with the tagline "Prepare to Dine." Some people are saying it gives off the vibes of a 2D side scroller, which seems plausible.

EDIT: come to think of it, most of the games aping Soulsborne are 2D. Salt and Sanctuary, Dark Maus, Hyper Light Drifter, Hollow Knight...

The art style isn't really like FromSoftware's usual fare. Theirs are far more detailed and less cartoon-ish, unless you count their Cookie n Cream game.

That tagline most likely just riding on Dark Souls tagline, I agree with Mecha here. Underworld-themed game maybe, who knows.

Bandai Namco announces Code Vein, a new action RPG from the God Eater team

What we now know:
  • The (possibly working) title is "Code Vein."
  • It's being made by the same people who were behind the God Eater games (haven't played them, can anyone tell me if they're any good?)
  • The player character is a vampire in a world that has mostly gone to ruin. Vampires go hollow (the jargon here is "Lost") if they don't feed on enough blood.
  • You can bring a friend for co-op.
  • It's a"dungeon exploration-type, hard action RPG"
...so It's really one big attempt to ride Soulsborne's coattails while trying to put their own spin on it. Which I am entirely happy with. :) I won't necessarily buy this game, but I'm glad that Miyazaki-san seems to have set a trend.

God Eater is basically another spin on the Monster Hunter series, except it actually has a story.
It's plenty good, trust me.

I have a storybuilding document on my computer which can be summed up as 'dark souls but the main character is a vampire', making this the latest entry in a continuing saga where I discover that all my ideas are so derivative that someone else will do it first :V

Anyway, I like the God Eater team and as I said above the trailer is on point. If I can play a twintailed vampire girl in a big hat, that's great. If it's following in Dark Souls footsteps it hopefully won't be too much of a grind.

I mean, it's a pretty blatant imitation of the Soulsborne franchise... Does it count as a franchise? Whatever, it's clearly taking working towards the same sort of thing.

However, that art is fucking sweet, and I like Soulsborne enough that I don't care if it's a cash grab, I'm just happy there's more and similar stuff.

Hype is rising.

I mean, they don't have literally everything done in a paintbrushed art style, but dayum that still looks good.

Code Vein Is Being Made With Unreal Engine 4, Developed On A Separate Line From God Eater - Siliconera
  • Code Vein is being made on a separate development line from the God Eater series, as a way to take on a new challenge.
  • When asked if there are any connections to God Eater, Tomizawa says they're advancing through its development to make it into a new title that can offer a new gaming experience.
  • The developers described the meaning behind the English word of "Vein" and "Code." They want you to think of it as "codes for blood."
  • "Vein" is the name of the closed world that players will be exploring in Code Vein. Here, you'll try to find its hidden truth.
  • They're calling the genre for it a "dramatic dungeon-exploring action RPG." It'll involve exploring the adjoining areas with tense atmosphere, as explore and travel. They feel that its strong sense of accomplishment sets it apart from your average genre of "dungeon-exploring action RPG."
  • You'll get to go on a journey with a "Buddy," in a game with difficulty that might make you quit if it were solo, but said to bring an even bigger sense of accomplishment from its many obstacles you'll have to overcome.
  • Your "Buddy" is controlled by AI, but there will be times where the players will need to help their Buddies
  • Code Vein is being made with Unreal Engine 4.
  • They can't share a clear answer for which hardware it is being made for, but they plan to release it on console.
  • A new trailer is expected to be revealed in early-May.
  • They aim to make it a worldwide title from Japan
  • As the team leader, Yusuke Tomizawa will oversee both God Eater and Code Vein.

Huh, cool. It looks like a mix between Bloodborne and God Eater, looks like the perfect game for me. Although at the same time, I must say that it looks really chuuni, with that narration.

So what if it's chuuni? I like the way it looks.

I have to admit that the anime-ish faces look a bit jarring against the background. But I can handle that.
