Cleaning Up After The Ancients (Stargate SI)

That ... makes no sense. Why would they need to download it into their brain to transfer a copy of the database instead of using a portable data storage crystal or system? Or using their internet equivalent and remotely downloading the data? Or using the database from elsewhere, like one of the Cityships or Outposts? Seriously, Antarctica, at least, should have a copy of everything pre-Pegasus, and depending on their remote update/backup practices and what they did after abandoning Atlantis, possibly even up to their abandoning Atlantis and running back to Earth.
Because it wasn't safe to move the data using those other methods. :drevil:

As to the Antarctica outpost, we know it has a database, but it doesn't have a repository level one.

So... Moros, or someone/something presenting as Moros. Ancient tech can be so fancy figuring that one out could be a little tricky...

The being surprised, though? Probably greatly increases the chance of Evan's dealing with a sapient, unless who set things up was really sneaky...

I'd point out in real life, if the torch system built into them wouldn't break, then a magnetic extending light of 30 cm would be an actual good multitool to use as a real life 30 cm long poking stick. One about five times longer is because Lantean science actually makes it work.

That would have made The High Council Meetings awkward if they were, High Councillor Moros telling Janus off for building a Time Machine when he had traveled back in time to do so.
Unless they were not exactly the same person past a point. one being the one who broke their own timeline so bad they no longer have a future to return to, so don't care about most of the rules anymore. the other being a version that gave up their plans after they saw how badly their future self was screwing with things and wanted nothing to do with time travel anymore, thus got into politics to try and reign in his no longer future self.

SGA sequel novels put him in stasis on a secret moon base. And he's the antagonist. Who ascends at the end.

Janus did create the Wraith, partially. So of any of the Lanteans, he's defo a mad scientist.
I think those were sequel comics, not the sequel Legacy novel series. The storyline from the two mediums are incompatible with one another.

Janus was not involved with creating the Wraith, as far as I know. That certainly isn't the case in show-canon, where the Wraith were thought to have evolved more or less naturally* over the 30 million years the Lanteans were in Pegasus (that's certainly plenty of time for that to have happened), and isn't the case in the Legacy novels - where some other team of Lanteans are responsible.
*from Iratus bugs that ate some Lanteans, IIRC ... or possibly something like the metamorphic virus that Shepard got infected with.

Not everything is Janus's fault. There were plenty of other Lanteans doing stupid and/or crazy shit without him being involved.

Antarctica could (and realistically probably should), be a lot bigger than we know about from canon.
I'm not sure why Antarctica wouldn't have a database with just about everything, at least as of when they left for Pegasus, if only as a backup in the lower levels.

Could Antarctica have hidden lower levels? Merlin certainly seemed into hiding stuff...

And he's grumpy all the time because Captain Janeway barges in from another multiverse to steal all his coffee, as retaliation for giving her time-travel-related headaches.

I feel like people forget that the Antarctica outpost we see in the show was just the tip of of a structure that was supposed to be resting on the ocean floor.

So we're probably talking about a building the height of something like the Empire State Building at a minimum.

And as Rodney mentioned in the story, as of when they'd left for Atlantis they'd only gotten down as far as the drones melted during their exit.

Story wise the governor was deactivated on those for a reason.

In both cases their last use was by rushed Ancients downloading a full copy of the local database into their brains for transport elsewhere.
While that explanation works I personally feel it is a bit questionable. What kind of circumstances would lead to the Ancient's being in such a rush? The Wraith was would cause it but the Plague would probably not. That would benefit from careful consideration and rushing is just more likely to result in the quarantine breaking.

Or did they download when under attack by some other faction taking advantage of the chaos of the plague or even after they returned?

Personally I like the idea of them disabling the governors to download the whole database but the transport idea feels questionable. It would make more sense if it was a last ditch attempt by someone to cure the plague. If your desperate then downloading all your peoples knowledge to hopefully make a break through is totally plausible compared to making a time machine which canonically was one solution we know they attempted.

Obviously it is your story but that is my thoughts on the matter. I am certainly interested in what your planning if that answer does pop up in story.

Preparing for ascension? They figured out a way for the majority of those who were left to accended out of their physical bodies. I would not be suprised if some of those preparing for the event to make a personal copy of the ainchints database for their personal use. Just stuff it in their own heads and don't care what it will do to their physical bodies, as in a few hours they will no longer have those.

they were transporting it, just to a metaphysical location rather than a physical one.

Yeah ... I don't see what could have possibly made it unsafe to use remote data access or data storage crystals to copy the database for, presumably, at least two different repository nodes (that should have had identical databases anyways).
Actually ... do we know if SG-1 used two different headgrabbers or did they simply go back to the first one?

Also ... why would they need to copy the repository databases? Those would presumably be copies of the databases on cityships like Atlantis, and probably elsewhere*. They're locally accessible backups, at most. They shouldn't have anything unique that couldn't be accessed elsewhere.
*I would expect Earth/Sol to have at least one facility with a more or less complete Ancient database, since it was the center of their civilization for quite a while. Even if the SGC hasn't found it, or realized they found it, yet. Not that they'd have much more success than the Asgard or Atlantis Expedition with the databases they had access to if they did.

Trying to force a shortcut to Ascension to escape the plague, sure.
A dumbass (ie, Orlin) fucking up, sure.
Somebody doing something they probably weren't supposed to (and probably not covering their tracks properly), sure.

Some kind of interface error that Jack inadvertently triggered a total download because he didn't know what was going on the first time and isn't actually an Ancient. He certainly wasn't doing anything to try to focus or control it. Sure.

Chapter 80 - Old Annoyances New
Chapter 80 - Old Annoyances

The being standing in front of Eventus obviously wasn't the real Moros, as he was still cycling around the stargate loop Ganos Lal had hidden him in. Even knowing that however, Eventus still felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end as it stared at him.

"The possibility of a surviving unascended Lantean or direct Lantean descendant discovering this device was calculated as a roughly 1 in 32 chance. With the most likely options being either Janus, or one of Mefitis's daughters."

"Mefitis had kids." Eventus muttered in shock, the sheer idea of the solitary woman finding someone she could get along with almost impossible for him to fathom.

"As such." The Moros shaped being continued. "I prepared a number of responses for someone other than me attempting to access this device's neural architecture ranging from gentle and chiding to direct and punitive."

It paused for a moment, and Eventus got the distinct sense of an non-sentient yet adaptive response program working through its list of available options.

"The primary factor I used to identify me as me was the High Councilor imprint which you also possess."

It would be moderately nice if things were that easy, only the lazy relied on single factor factor authentication however, and Eventus could sense the but coming.

"However the remaining identification factors confirm that you are not me. That means you are either someone who has successfully forged the High Councilor imprint, or a Lantean survivor from Atlantis."

"The second." Eventus immediately confirmed, absolutely not wanting to know what the program would do to someone at caught trying to fake that particular authorization.

Seemingly ignoring this response they program continued speaking. "The most likely to be capable of the first is Janus, however the hidden identifying factors I have been loaded with to detect such an attempt have come up negative. That leaves the remaining possibility that you are a Lantean survivor from Atlantis."

"Which I am." Eventus told it again, not even remotely surprised that Moros had put targeted countermeasures in place for the possibility of Janus showing up.

"The only known Lantean survivor that possesses the potential to fit those criteria is Eventus Iuxta Deverah. Who would have been woken by the Atlantis Expedition's arrival in the city."

"Actually." Eventus interjected, feeling slightly petty given just whose program he was dealing with. "Rodney McKay overroad the automatic revival sequence, so I only woke up about a month ago."

"The probability of Eventus Iuxta Deverah taking on the responsibilities of High Councilor however is 1 in 1,632,967, as such it was deemed unnecessary to include the possibility in my response tree."

"Hold on a minute." Eventus said, feeling oddly insulted at the fact that Moros had apparently considered it that unlikely that Evengus would step up and take over running Atlantis. "Just what kind of person did Moros think I was?"

"If you are Eventus Iuxta Deverah, please confirm your identity now by verbally reciting your personal maintenance officer passphrase."

Narrowing his eyes at the program for a moment, Eventus shook his head and let out an annoyed sigh. "The answer to life the universe and everything, is forty two."

"Passphrase confirmed." The program returned. "Accessing proper response branch."

The placid look on the program's face transformed into an annoyed scowl. "The information within this device is not for one such as you."

Eventus felt his eye twitch at the immediate dismissal and he was about to tell the program where it could shove hits rejection before a suspicion hit.

"You were supposed to kick me out of this data layer after saying that, weren't you?"

The program's only response was silence.

"But you can't do that, because me being High Councilor triggered additional higher priority branches in your response tree that need to be resolved before you can end the interface session without my input."

More silence.

"I'll take that as a yes." He continued with a grin. "In which case, are you able to provide me with the last known location of the Council Archive Core?"

The look of placidness returned to the program's features "Query unrecognized."

Which could mean any number of things, but given he had no idea whether any acceleration was going on in the data layer it was probably better to slip directly to the one subject he was absolutely sure Moros would have covered.

"The Ori are invading the Avalon galaxy and I'm working with the humans of Earth to try and drive them back."

The program blinked, a clear enough sign to Eventus at this point in their conversation that his words had triggered some kind of programing response.

"Please repeat your statement." The program finally said as Eventus felt a recognizable tickle in the back of his brain.

"Unwilling class three brain scans are illegal, you know." Eventus complained, fully aware he was just being petty at this point.

"But fine, the Ori are invading the Avalon galaxy and I'm working with the humans of Earth to try and drive them back."

"You truly believe that." The program said, the tingling feeling disappearing as it spoke. "If you encounter Ganos Lal after this, please make it known that I told her so."

What that last bit of pettiness both the darkness and simulacrum of Moros vanished, returning Eventus to Carter's lab where an orange holographic screen was now projecting itself out of octangular crystal at the center of Arthur's Mantle.

"Okay, that worked out sli–"

"Carter." O'Neill interrupted, and Eventus turned to see all three of the others staring at him with varying degrees of alarm. "Please tell me the Ancient didn't just accidentally vaporize himself."

Carter shook her head "The flash looked more like some sort of teleportation effect."

Given nobody could see him right now, Eventus had no qualms about allowing his palm to meet his face, and spent a full ten seconds just wallowing in the fact that he'd momentarily forgotten that part of how Arthur's Mantle worked.

"So he's what." Daniel began with a frown as he looked around the room. "Back in Merlin's cave?"

"Maybe." Carter said as she moved over to her laptop and began looking over the information being displayed on it.

Taking a moment to glance back over at the holographic display, Eventus let out a sigh of relief at the phase control instructions displayed as part of a convenient sidebar next to page one of some sort of journal entry.

"It looks like the lab's sensors didn't pick up any of the typical energy signatures emitted by various types of teleportation technology." Carter said. "They did however record a burst of lepton radiation at the same moment Eventus disappeared."

O'Neill nodded in understanding. "Ah, those things.

"It's like the thing with Doctor Ballard and the Crystal Skull, Jack." Daniel reminded him

"I knew that." O'Neill returned, walking over to bend down slightly next to Carter. "So he's here but just invisible?"

"Very likely, sir." Carter confirmed as she glanced over her shoulder at him.

O'Neill nodded again, straightening up and looking over in the general direction of where Eventus was currently standing. "Hey? Don't go anywhere. And if there's no obvious way to reverse it over there, don't worry about it, Carter will get you out."

Smiling slightly at the words, Eventus couldn't help but enjoy the rare feeling of other competent people working to fix a problem.

"Let's see." He muttered to himself as he glanced back at the instructions. "To activate, hold down the table key for six seconds." He took a moment to glare at the device out of sheer principle. "A round table pun? Really Moros."

Even though he supposed it made sense in the context of association for various less advanced groups that might find the device, a feeling of general embarrassment at the choice still washed over him. And the Lantean shook his head in bemusement before reading the final line. "Warning, this device will not activate when in physical contact with felids."

Eventus couldn't help himself and broke out laughing at the absurd picture that painted in his mind of the great Moros chasing a cat off his keyboard consistently enough that he had needed to program "cat sitting on keyboard" in as an activation exception.

"All right then." He said as he held down the table key. "Here goes nothing."

A flash of light momentarily filled his vision and then the holographic display was gone.

"Hey, you're back." O'Neill exclaimed happily. "Good work Carter."

Carter shook her head. "Wasn't me, sir."

"Moros left instructions in the other dimension." Eventus explained. "The phase effect can be activated by holding down the table key for six seconds." He paused, his lips twitching slightly at the memory. "Unless there is a cat on the keyboard."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Author's Note: Tell the truth, if you could program your keyboard to ignore accidental cat inputs you'd absolutely do it too.

Hah, high councilor position coming in clutch. Though it's interesting the device recognized it passively. Likely meaning the city imprinted something in his psyche when he gained the position.

If I were Evan I'd try to grab a copy of the data on that laptop, just on principle. As the saying about backups goes, "One is none."

I don't get why Moros would dismiss the possibility of Eventus taking the High Councilor position after the Atlantis Expedition woke him up.
Personally, I'd call it a near certainty if he woke up before any other Ancients claimed the position. Even if only for the improved access to Atlantis's systems.
And apparently Moros is or was on the petty side. Though, one would have thought that loosing the Wraith War would have shaken some of the complacency and arrogance out of him.

Sure, Ganos (and the rest of the Others) should get a deserved "I told you so" about the threat of the Ori invading Avalon. On the other hand, the Ori only know about modern humanity in Avalon because the Alteran communications device in Merlin's Cave was linked back to the Ori galaxy, and was easily accessed and activated - far more easily than any warnings against doing so could be found. It shouldn't have been that hard to disable the device or lock it down more securely. Which is Moros's fault.

Oh. The Ori. Was it Ori-worshippers that did a total download (of everything they could access) into their brains before using the communications device to take that knowledge back to the Ori galaxy? That would justify not using a more conventional method of data transfer.
