It was accidentally leaked about 2 minutes ago by the Civilization Twitter account. The release date is planned for October 21st, 2016.

Here's a youtube link in case the tweet doesn't appear for some reason.

Article:
As if 2016 didn't already contain a rich enough seam of strategy games, Firaxis announce today that Civilization VI will be released on October 21st. Development duties are in the hands of the team behind Civ V's expansions, Gods & Kings and Brave New World, and when we spoke to designer Ed Beach and associate producer Sarah Darney last week to learn all the details, they told us that almost every system from the complete Civ V will be included in the sequel: trade routes, religious systems, archaeology…there'll be no need to wait for expansions, it's all in the base game.

The game is running on a brand new suite of software, built to be far more mod-friendly than its predecessor, and as well as brand new AI systems, there are a host of new mechanics that will explore and emphasise your relationship with Civ's greatest character: the map.

The most immediately notable change in Civ V as compared to IV lay in the handling of military units. No longer could armies be stacked one on top of another, taking up space in the same tile. As well as preventing the creation of 'doom stacks', single-tile armies of formidable strength that encouraged mass production of military units for both defense and attack, Civ V's approach allowed for tactical combat utilising features of the map. Strong defensive units could be placed around weaker units with ranged weapons, and deploying around rivers and mountains was more involved than previously.

Wooooo hypehypehype.
This is a powerfully meaningless trailer, telling us nothing whatsoever about the game. I am impressed.
It's the OP, just like the OP for the previous games. Besides, it's announcement trailer. Announcement trailers these days doesn't really show the gameplay, other than the game is under works. You want more? You wait for the gameplay trailers. Or the interviews, since this is a Civ game after all, so the details and the specifics of the mechanics changes are the ones that are important.

Besides, it has told us something: The release date. Which to me is the really important thing since I know I'm going to buy it anyways regardless of the changes. Well, unless the reviews are bad, which no amount of gameplay trailers could guarantee what to expect of the final result because, again, it's in the details.

Eh, the style is a bit too cartoony and I don't like that the hexes are more pronounced.

Also, a bit disappointed that they're not giving Civ:BE more than one expansion.

Oooh, man, that new tech approach sounds really cool. I'm hype.

Glad they're keeping one unit per tile and revamping "support" units.

All things considered though, strategy games being strategy games, it's probably better to wait until all the expansions and DLCs are out first. Partially because they're really only fully worth it with all the expansions and DLCs, and partially because it's cheaper that way. Also, for discounts.

But if people don't buy it, there'll never be DLC or expansions.

From what I could decipher from the screenshots at least one old Civilization is making a return and that is Japan.

The Units showcased front and center in both the first and third screenshot are likely Samurai. Not sure on the other unit shown there but it may indicare another civlization.

Wonder wise the old Staples Pyramids, Great Lighthouse and Oracle all seem to be coming back as well along with a new Wonder which appears to be some sort of Statue to Poseidon? Is there any big Statue of Poseidon in History that could be classfied as a World Wonder?

Edit: India can also be pretty much confirmed seeing as Gandhi is shown on the trailer thumbnail.

The Trailer showcases the Sphinx, Colosseum of Rome, the Eiffel Tower and what appears to be the Empire State Building. Can we assume those could also be Wonders in the new Game? I think the Empire State Building would be a debut in this case (I am pretty sure the Sphinx and the Colosseum of Rome have been in past games). The Hubble Telescope also appears as well as the Moon Landings so it is likely both the Hubble Telescope and the Apollo Program will be in as well.

Who is the guy with the glasses though at around the 55 sec mark? He looks familiar.

I don't like the graphics. It's that kind of style that makes me fear about the presence of microtransactions. But the other information looks interesting. I'm looking forward to it.

Stellaris released on Monday. Hearts of Iron 4 coming out at the start of next month. Battlefield 1 going to WW1 last Sunday. And now a new civ game?

I LOVE 2016!

The One Unit Per Tile mechanic came with its own set of problems though.
Like the Traffic Jam of Doom. If you had a lot of units, they would constantly get in each other's way. Especially if you had to go through bottlenecks or rough terrain. I hope the formations system will manage to fix that.

That was rather part of the point. You have to think about unit arrangement in order to avoid traffic jams. If you shove them all in there so they get stuck and slaughtered in front of the enemies positions, then it's your own damn fault.

And if it gets to the point that you have so many units you can't help but have a traffic jam regardless, then you've probably already won.

I hope that you have to have missile silos to build nuclear missiles. It'd give players a reason to target anything other than cities with nukes.

The hype is real! New Civ game, WWI AAA shooter, Overwatch, this year is my year!

But if people don't buy it, there'll never be DLC or expansions.
If you're really interested in it, have a lot of money, and/or a big Civ fan, sure you should buy them immediately as it comes out. As for me, I'm a bit more cautious about it now that I've come down from the hype, I don't have a lot of money, and not that big of a Civ fan so I'll hold for the cheapest and complete way of getting the game.

But honestly though, I felt that with strategy games, buying the game without expansions are like pre-ordering a Ubisoft game. Not exactly a wise course of action, if you ask me. The expansions tend to be quite integral and game-changing that it feels like buying an incomplete game to me - even though it is in fact, complete. The mods and the multiplayer components often requiring having all the DLCs didn't help too.

Well, call me pleasantly optimistic. I'm fond of the art style and I definitely like the idea of sprawling cities out across multiple tiles (Endless Legend did this and it worked out pretty well in my opinion). How the rest of it goes we'll have to see though, but I approve of the stated 'make the map more relevant, make it easier to mod and make the AI more memorable' goals.

Honestly, the artstyle right now doesn't ping with me. I really liked the Civ V Terrain, so now it looking more cartoony is... eh. Hopefully the look will change a bit.

Gandhi's nukes were certainly memorable, though. Though right after I got nuked by him, I got salty and reloaded my save before emptying all of my nukes on each of his cities preemptively. His capital I nuked twice for good measure. The fallout was hell to clean up after I took the city though.

Depending on the releases/ the state of my funds at the time. I'd be willing to get this day...three let's say.

I'd still wait for reviews and such to come in, but if I like what I see as the release comes closer it might be worth it.
