Bullets, Braves, and Boons: Sovernaquest I

Also, Reality Warping is on the Space side. I mean, we'll probably go insane if we ever get it, but that's the price for power, you know?

Whoops didn't see your question there @HylianHal, the reason I prefer Space is because it gives us more options to choose from.
Time and space together form our world, and control of 1 without any control of the other is less powerful than control over both (even if one of these sets of control is limited) [think of speed for example, distance over time. Power works too, which is energy over time]
The way I see it, way more options that are easy to imagine and picture exist within the Space-tree, even though the tree doesn't yet exist.

Hakuna matata. For the record, are you saying that you chose Space because we're already influencing Time and you'd like to do both?
control of 1 without any control of the other is less powerful than control over both
You will not have control over Space and Time, generally. Once you choose a path, you'll lose your time dilation boon and gain whichever Boon you've voted on.

E: I like your reasoning @JaceAoT, have 1 HP.

Also, Reality Warping is on the Space side. I mean, we'll probably go insane if we ever get it, but that's the price for power, you know?
You'll definitely go insane if you gain reality warping in a certain capacity, but there are greater and lesser expressions of it. Your continued sanity is contingent upon how much you can shape your reality. I mean hell, every Doc is technically a reality warper.

O that actually clarifies some things for me. Still though, I like the options Space gives us. In addition to that, I have a better general understanding of Space in comparison to time.
I understand Time quite well, general relativity and special relativity hold little secrets for me, but i just know or at least feel like I understand Space so much better.

In Harm's Way, II
"Of course, Lord Harm. I don't think anyone would try and claim your position is lined with easy decisions."

"You would be surprised, miss; I am confronted weekly by people who believe themselves capable of filling this seat. Be on your way now, child. Glare will show you to your shared quarters."

- - -

The walk from Harm's stronghold is mostly a quiet one. Glare keeps his head on a swivel, observing those who you pass with a keen eye- not threatening, just observing as far as you can tell.

"You don't do a lot of glaring, from what I've seen. Perhaps you should have been 'Observe'.

The older man snorts. "I haven't seen you fly, either. Perhaps you should have been 'Grumpy Plodder'."

Despite yourself, you bristle a bit.

"Rook isn't a working name, it's my given name."

"Gods, how unfortunate. Who would do such a thing?"

"Leave it be, Peer. And I'm not grumpy."

"Very will, Miss Trot."

- - -

You arrive in good order to the largest, nicest shanty you've ever stepped into: two rooms and a basin! Dirt floor, sturdy walls, thatch ceiling-

"This is my area, don't get too comfortable- you'll be staying in the room just beyond that curtain. Lemme know if I can do anything to help you settle in, an extra blanket or-"

"What I need is information. I need to understand what the people around here are capable of. What can you tell me of the Boons of the people we just met?"

"Right to it? Fair enough, let's see... You've heard of Squall, I take it?" At your nod, he grimaces. "Not a pleasant man, but then you likely know that as well. He spits high-power lightning from his mouth like a spiteful storm, though I'm not sure how he sees through that black mess that seeps out of his maw with every breath. He's arguably the most violent of Harm's champions that you'll see on the day-to-day. Furious.

"Then there's Imogen Forme, who can alter her appearance or her physical properties, but not both. If you ever see her with red hair, at about 5'5" with small breasts, be wary; she's likely increased her strength, or made herself featherlight or hyperdense or some nonsense. Daring.

"What about Doc Jaeger?" The man had unnerved you a bit, with his roving eyes and unmoving mouth.

"What about Jaeger? The guy finds things, makes incredible machines for tracking and following.. And he's not all there, emotionally. Calm and crazy."

"What does that mean, how do they track things?"

"The thing he spends most his time tinkering on in his shop, going more mad by the day to maintain and develop, are the Bloodhounds: machines that track a target's scent over hundreds of miles."

"Gods."

"Yeah." Glare's eyes unfocus for a moment, staring into the middle distance, before snapping back to your face. "Oh and obviously Brona's Boon is a nascent bit of Hope, though I'm not sure what she has to be hopeful about at this point."

"What was that, by the way? Why did that happen?"

"What is there to explain? Brona's in.. Almost the same shoes as you, and has refused to comply. She doesn't take jobs, she doesn't go for bounties- I don't think she's voluntarily fed her Boon any conflict at all, in fact. Just tries to flee the territory every chance she gets. I'm seriously reconsidering my initial notion that she was quite bright."

You swallow the words 'I suspect she's smarter than anyone gives her credit for,' and instead prompt, "And the warlord himself?"

Glare returns from the basin with water for the two of you, and takes a contemplative sip.

"Lord Harm wields a Sorrowful Boon, as he said. Its principle application is re-inflicting past injuries on others- any scratch, burn, or bruise- just needs line of sight."

You cringe inwardly, thinking of all of your 'trophies' from past scuffles.

"That used to be awful enough, what with all of the scars most of us carry, but a few years back he started batting down his champions' attempts to accept challenges to the territory on his behalf, taking on more of them personally. After a few months of this, way I hear it, it came out that he had been developing a new aspect of his Boon: when he re-inflicts a wound on someone now, they're filled with the memory of that event. The memory of that pain hits them in tandem with the present, but also the emotions they felt at the time, cranked up to exaggeration unnaturally. It, uh... It really leaves them in a sorry state, fills their mind with agony and chaotic emotion. Not a fan, personally."

"That's... How the hell do you fight that?"

"Speed seems to be the popular answer. You'll notice that no one who's tried that has succeeded, however- on account of him owning the ground these chairs are sitting on."

"Does he do that a lot?"

"Do what, demonstrations like that? No, he only really uses it now when he feels he needs to- used to struggle with the visions much more, in the younger days of his rule. Using it on Brona like that was partly to make an impression on you; seeing Squall's work is always eye-opening, even second-hand like that. Pretty clear message, no? 'Do not take advantage of my kindness,' he yells over his- over Brona's screams." Glare picks at his fingernails for a moment, his eyes glaze over, and he flicks something to the floor. "It doesn't really matter, does it? Don't fuck up, run, or disappoint him and you'll live a happy and fat life."

"Partly?"

"Hmm?" The bearded man looks up from where he was fiddling with his jacket.

"You said partly to make an impression; why else would he do that?"

"Because the screams of little girls make him particularly sad and that's good for Boon growth?"

"Hm. Glare, you're not only deflecting, but you're forgetting someone else," you prod him.

"No I didn't, unless you suspect one of those guards of keeping a Boon from all of us, and I really don't think any of them are cunning enough to-"

"You never told me what you can do."

Glare laughs harshly, peering at you past his greasy fringe.

"I suppose I didn't. I felt Joy, when my Boon came to me. Now, I can see things that aren't present- things far away."

"You mean.."

"Anywhere I direct my eyes to, as if they're not restrained to the confines of my skull."

You give an impressed (and slightly unnerved) whistle.

"I can see why Harm tolerates your foreign parents. Still doesn't seem very threatening in combat."

"Well, don't forget that the Joyful are very durable- hard to kill, like," he says. "Also though, when I focus on someone I can either stop them in place for a while, or render them unconscious."

That's.. Actually quite impressive. Between him and Jaeger... Good thing they don't get on better.

"Wow, that's..." Your eyes shift unbidden to the curtain connecting your rooms. "Wait, if-"

"I'm not interested in seeing your body, Rook. You need a few years anyway, like a nice wine."

"Wine?"

"Don't worry about it. Anything else?"

You fish out your new pistol from your side and brandish it impotently. "I have no idea how to use this."

He promptly snatches it out of your hand. "I'll hold on to this, for now."

"But I-"

"Nobody's going to attack you in your sleep here, everyone knows that Harm doesn't tolerate people interfering with his.. Protégés? Championettes? Anyway I'm here, and also you can slow time whenever you get a bit misty-eyed so I really don't think-"

"Fine, point made, I get it. I'm going to bed now Glare- thank you for catching me up."

"Sleep well, miss. Welcome to.. Everything else. Welcome to mattering."

Brona and Glare seem like good people to have on our side. So getting to know them early could be useful.

Your vote was tied with the Bounty List, and I'm tempted to just take the list as our third option since we're guaranteed to have something interesting happen, where checking in on dear old dad will likely just have us fail forward a bit.

If someone wants to alter their vote though I'll take it into account when I post, tonight.

Hey I'm not dead, apparently.

Sorry for dropping off the face of the world, my life really fell to shit, as it related to my children and family.. But I'm getting past that now, and trying to move on.

The one bright side to all of this mess is that I find myself with quite a lot of free time, compared to what my life looked like previously- too much time to think about how poorly things went, idle hands and all.

I'm considering dipping back into Soverna for the first time in yonks; I probably won't revive this thread.

Is anyone still around who cares, or would I be building a playerbase from scratch?

I'm still surprisingly.
I thought i be dead by now to be honest, but it takes more than hiatus to keep this voter buried.

Reboot
I'm back, and I've cracked open my worldbible for Soverna again. Tragedies these days are few and far between, my life seems to be stabilizing a bit, and the luxury that normally has required has lost its rarity.

In a new thread with a fresh start, which of the following would interest you the most? (Synopses for each premise are only meant to convey the starting point of the quest, not to dictate the entirety of the quest's content.)

[ ] Orphan of the Wyltlands - A straight reboot of this quests premise, of Rook, the waif who awoke her Boon in Lord Harm's territory.

[ ] A Curse for Cantrip - You are Cantrip, daughter of the legendary mercenary, Allman. Although your Boon's many and various powers are weak and without the limitations that would ordinarily keep you safe from their use, your father has trained you rigorously to rapidly alternate between the 23 forms, giving you the versatility and adaptability to handle most threats. This year at your school, things seem stacked against you, and foul play is becoming more and more apparent.

[ ] Angel's Wake - You are Angel, a man on a mission you don't remember receiving. Repeatedly, Angel has appeared to assault one target or another, fighting with a hellish abandon until his death, only to appear again weeks or months later, with another mission in mind. You have rapidly developed a reputation as a bogeyman to both outlaw and capitalist alike, although you've never stopped long enough to ponder why it is that you hunt these men of the realm.

[ ] Victor and the Usurper - You are Victor, Wyltlord of a modest territory in the west. Beyond ruling over your subjects, your most daunting responsibility is to accept challengers who want only to take your title from you and leave you in the ground. However many times this has happened, however, you've always woken up in your bed, the memory of your death fresh in mind, ready to tackle your would-be usurper from another angle. Your memory is unnaturally good, and you haven't been beaten yet... At least as far as anyone else can remember.

Today, however, your Usurper is unusually canny, and you find yourself re-awakening again and again, your worsening headache making it a bit more difficult to remember the steps to your dance with each defeat. You just hope you can find her Boon's counter before you're unable to even leave your bed.

[ ] The Hanging Tree Plot -or- The Mistletoe Initiative - You are a member of HODER, a holy order bent on laying low the posthuman and his unnatural perversions of humanity, and elevating the triumph of man and his works. The road to victory to be paved over your foes' graves is treacherous, but some of the technological innovations emerging from the Old World are beginning to level the playing field.

[ ] Salt and Black - You are Brine, one of the founding members of The Salt, a loose coalition of pirates and seagoing treasure-hunters based out of the island state of Halo. Recently your shipwright, Seaworthy, has come into possession of Freischütz, an unusually powerful pistol with a mind of its own. Now, with proof of the weapon's existence, the two of you have set your sights on gathering the rest of the 12 fabled guns made by Artificer.

Why?

To equip your crew and form an unbeatable firing squad, and rule the seas? To sell for 12 fortunes? To use North Star to find whatever treasure you desire? To Mercy to make sure you never lose another seaman? Nah man, it'd just be really, really cool.

[ ] The Cartographer's Burden - You are Bulwark, of a traveling, two-man cartographic team tasked with mapping the Realm's ever-changing borders during the war. Your new partner isn't a suitable replacement for your recently-passed wife, but then nobody would be, and you need the locomotive assistance of a Boon of Joy if you're to continue your work. She held the bird's-eye view, you provided your protective Boon from a distance, keeping her safe; that was always the plan, and this new partner wasn't going to change that much.

A battle in the midst of your travels was not in the plan, although you avoided it as best you could. That battle's loss suddenly moving the border 25 miles east of you certainly wasn't part of the itinerary, but you've been behind enemy lines before. You are positive that finding a helpless infant in the wild was never scribbled down anywhere in the terms of this most recent assignment, but what is a man to do? Leave it there? No, strapping a baby to your chest was never the plan, but plans change as quickly as maps do.

There's quite a bit of groundwork that would need to be invested to flesh out most of these choices, so the new thread's creation would likely be a few weeks away. I simply wanted to gauge interest from the people who tried to participate in the most-nascent form of the setting, or at least those who bothered to poke their heads into a long-dead thread.

Please let me know if you have any questions at all about any of these which would help inform you choice.
