Nando

they, them
Okay, so, first quest, and first thing I'm writing in quite some time. So, we will see how this goes. Also: English is not my first language, so may grammar and/or structure might be of, at times.

I've been reading Halping Quest (again) and I loved the idea of a shard granting Magic - without really knowing how to do so. So, for this quest we will assume a shard succeeded with that, but left the finer points to the Host. They will have to create their own Magical System: Do they need rare reagents? Chants? Gestures? Do they perform long and complex rituals to get what they want? Do they have spell slots or a mana pool? Do they need a wand? Let's find out!

First of all: Who is our Host?

[] Taylor Hebert: You wake up in the hospital an indefinite amount of time after you've been shoved into your locker. You are pretty sure that you have gone at least a little bit insane. And equally sure that you can do magic. Which, in turn, makes you at least a little bit sure that you are a parahumen? (January 2011)

[] Missy Biron: Your parent's fighting has been getting worse and worse, and during one of the nights while their shouting kept you from sleeping, something in your mind broke. At least that was, what it felt like at first. You knew magic wasn't real, that was a thing kids believed in. And at ten you are obviously no longer a kid!(March 2009)

[X] Chris(topher) Lehane: Your struggles with school came to a heap when you were diagnosed not only with ADD but also dyscalculia. Thinking that you'd never amount to anything in your life you went to bed, and woke up with a very confusing early Christmas present. Trying to make heads or tails of your strange thoughts you are glad for the upcoming holidays, even if you will have to deal with you exasperated dad ("Why can't you just concentrate? Maybe you should go outside more. Don't you have a clique to run around with?")(December 2009)

[]write in: Can be any other canon character, or an OC. Please give a time (and place, if not BB). Keep in mind that the further removed from canon you go, the harder it will be for me, so votes for a Host outside of BB and/or earlier than 2009 will count only for 66%.

I can't promise any schedule, but voting for a Host is open for, let's say, 6 hours? We'll see how many of you are interested in this experiment :)
edit: Voting has been prolonged to 24 hours, so it end at 6:30 am UTC+2.

Character sheet
Character Sheet
Name: Chris(topher) Lehane
Age, Birthday: 14, 10th of July
Power: D.I.Y. Magical System(s), triggered during the night of the 22nd December 2009

Status: Hosts mind is somewhere over there, I guess?

Chris has been growing up with his single dad Ryan. When his mother didn't want a child at the age of 23, but also didn't want to have an abortion. Ryan, having grown up in the foster system didn't want to give the child up to the system. They split after Chris' birth, with Ryan taking full custody. Initially struggling, Ryan managed to keep them well fed, if not well off. In between changing jobs, freelance journalism and taking care of little Chris, Ryan published an autobiographical "coming-of-age" novel about being a single dad in the 90s in the art scene of the East Coast.
Despite feeling obligated to take care of his son, Ryan never really knew how what to do with a kid. So, while his dad went off into the world to socialise, party, draw people on the Boardwalk (he actually has some pieces hanging in the Forsberg Gallery), Chris was left to his own devices. When Chris' struggles with school became apparent, Ryan told him to "just concentrate" and that he should spent more time outside, running with his "clique" (that Chris did not, in fact, have), "just like his dad did when he was younger."
When Chris started attending Acardia High after summer, and his struggles became more and more pronounced, the school talked with Rany, who made Chris him take some tests. This happend in the first half of December 2009. When the results came back with a Diagnosis of ADD and dyscalculia, Chris sought the support of his dad (again). Being told "I love you" by a man who changes girl- and boyfriends every few months wasn't the kind of support he needed. So, with his head full of anxiety, frustration and despair, Chris crashed into bed on the evening of the 22nd of December to wake up with a head even more full of distracting thoughts and images.

Place of residence: Chris lives with his dad Ryan in the condo owned by the latter. It is located in an apartment complex in Downtown, Brockton Bay.

Traits:
ADD: Chris struggles to concentrate on own thing for any longer amount of time. He is easily distracted and has a slight tendency to forget things he didn't specifically take care to remember.
Dyscalculia: Chris struggles to keep numbers in his head and has trouble making connections between different numbers. Adds a secret roll when Chris uses a numbers-based Magical System.

Resources:
Money: 152$ in cash
A bike: It takes you from A to B in slightly less time than walking.
A PC: You have your own PC in your room, with internet.
Access to:
Some random books: Your dad has quite some books, on different topics. You've never really got a good look at all of those...
AD&D Players Handbook: Your dad lent you his copy of this book. You haven't had a deeper look into it, but it seems to outline at least some kind of magical system that is used in the game?

Magical Systems

Unlocked Systems:

Harry-Poter-Style-Wandmagic
Tool-based (Personal; Picky; Specialized; Craftable), Incantations (WYSIWYG; Latin), Somatic (Tool-focused), Crafting (Minor: Tool-focused)

"The wand chooses the wizard..."
But, in the case of an acute absence of a huge collection of wands from which one might choose a fledgling wizard or witch, they might find it necessary to craft themselves a more limited, specialized tool. Those are still capable of great feats, in the right hands.

Spellwork
Wandwork 1
: Knows how to handle a wand that was crafted using this system. Can perform a limited number of simple somatic components of this system. Can guess/work out the correct somatic components for spells with a single, limited focus (e.g. light making, fire starting, cooling air).
Incantations 1: Knows a very limited amount of incantation of spells of this system. Can guess/work out the correct incantation for spells with a single, limited focus (e.g. light making, fire starting, cooling air).

Power 1: Can create effects that are limited in scope, duration and/or relevance. A single effect might be enough to overwhelm a single hostile human or achieve a result, that mundane technique could easily replicate.

Known spells:
Lumos: The tip of your wand starts to shine in a manner similar to a candle. You can push the intensity of the light up to the level of a bright flashlight.
Requirements: Personal or light-focused wand, Wandwork 1, Incantations 1

Reparo: Repairs an object or, if cast with enough power, an area as if time was reversed for it. Does not work on living beings or electrical devices (but derivatives of this spell might).
Requirements: Personal or order-/time-/mending-focused wand, Wandwork 2, Incantations 2

Crafting
Carving (Wands) 1
: Has a rough understanding of how wands work and how to create one. Can use simple materials, that are easy to work with (e.g. soft woods, mundane animal hair etc.). Has a vague understanding of what kind of materials to use to create a wand with a single, limited focus (e.g. light making, fire starting, cooling air).

Blueprints:
<none discovered>

Probability-manipulation-Magic System
Mental-based (Visualization (Numbers); Focus), Precognition (Probability; Outcome), Reality-manipulation (Probability)

"I'll make my own fate, with blackjack and other probability-based games!"
Visualizes the intricate network of numbers that govern the probability of any event and seeks to push them in a preferred direction. Requires intense focus.

Prediction
Visualization 2
: Can visualize the numbers governing a closed system or a singular event in an open system. Needs one or two minutes to reach required focus. Easily interrupted.

Known Uses
Omen: Can predict the best or worst course of action concerning a visualized system or event. Can subconsciously follow this prediction without loosing focus. Mentally taxing.
Requirements: Focus, Visualization 1
Cost: Mental energy

Manipulation
Willpower 2
: Can exhaust Focus to push against the fabric of reality in a very limited manner, and only concerning probabilities. Can shift some limitations around, to better fit the users desires. Needs a visualized target.

Power 2: Can create effects that are limited in scope, duration and/or relevance. A single effect might be enough to overwhelm more than one hostile human, achieve a result, that mundane technique could replicate or have up to two distinct consequences (e.g. creating a ball of fire and creating a ball of water).

Known Uses
Push luck: Can exhaust Focus to push the outcome of an action whose governing numbers have been visualized into a favorable direction.
Requirements: Willpower 1, Power 1
Cost: Focus
False Dichotomy: Can exhaust Focus to force the outcome of an action whose governing numbers have been visualized to be either extremely positive or extremely negative (e.g. pulling the trigger of a gun results in either the gun exploding or critically wounding the target).
Requirements: Willpower 2, Power 2
Cost: Focus

Demonology System (partial)
Patron-based (Contract; ???), Rituals (Summoning, ???), ???

"Heed my call, demon!"
Forming a contract with a demon is a wonderful way to acquire a great amount of both power and problems.

Rituals
Circle drawing 1
: Has basic knowledge on how to set up a simple, non-permanent summoning circle. Might make mistakes when trying out new circles.
Contract drafting 0: Knows that contracts should be a part of a proper demon summoning.

???

Power 2: Can create effects that are limited in scope, duration and/or relevance. A single effect might be enough to overwhelm more than one hostile human, achieve a result, that mundane technique could replicate or have up to two distinct consequences (e.g. creating a ball of fire and creating a ball of water).

Known Rituals
Summon unbound demon: Using a simple salt circle and five candles with the incantation "Heed my call, demon!" an unbound demon can be summoned. WARNING: The strength of the summoned demon is unknown/random. The summoned demon will in no way be under the control of the summoner.
Requirements: Circle drawing 1, Power any
Cost: 5 candles, 200g of salt, 15 minutes of time

Animal-Magic System
Emotion-based (Empathy (Non-human-animals)), Minions (Bonding, Non-human-animals), Shapeshifting (Mimicry (Minions))

"Some people talk to animals. Not many listen though. That's the problem."
Emotionally connects with animals. Uses these connections to form strong two-way bonds with specific animals. May enable shapeshifting based on bonds.

Power 1: Can create effects that are limited in scope, duration and/or relevance. A single effect might be enough to overwhelm a single hostile human or achieve a result, that mundane technology could easily replicate.

Bonding
Animal Empathy 1
: Can understand behaviour of known animals as well as any person who has regular contact to the animal in question (e.g. understands dog behaviour as well as a dog owner).

Known Uses
Animal Companion: Forms a two-way bond with a single animal. Grants increased empathy with bonded. Benefits grow as the strength of the bond grows.

Requirements: at least Animal Empathy 1, willing animal
Cost: regular investment of time, satisfying the wants and needs of bonded
Note: Danger of backlash if bind is broken (death of bonded, failing to honor the bond,…).

<none>

Shapeshifting
Animal Companion
: <no bonds formed>

Note: Shapeshifting capabilities depend on each specific aquired Animal Companion bond and Power of this System (e.g. having an Animal Companion bond with a dog enables dog-templates for Shapeshifting, specific templates depending on strength of bond, strength and duration of Shifting depending on Power).

How stuff works
So, a little bit more info on how this is going to work.

You, as players/the PC come up with a Magical System you want to work with. You can try different ones, as much as you want, but you will start each one at a beginner's state. That means it makes sense to invest time/resources into one System if you want to get to "stronger" effects. Even if this will be able to be offset through different means. More on that later.

An example: You decide that the way to world domination/- peace/eternal life/- happiness is the way of Underwater Basket Weaving!
So, this generates the Magical System of Underwater Basket Weaving. You (as players) get a kind of profile for this System:

Underwater Basket Weaving
Crafting (Function doesn't follow Form; Expertise), Metaphorical (Ingredients; Location); Reality conflicting

"As we resist the water, weighting us down, so we resist reality in weighting down our magic. As our bodies are no suitable containers for magic, so we weave fitting ones."

Weaving 1: Can weave basic patterns with little proficiency.
Metaphorical understanding 1: Has some idea of which ingredients might fit an intended effect.

Power 1: Can create effects that are limited in scope, duration and/or relevance. A single effect might be enough to overwhelm a single hostile human or achieve a result, that mundane technique could easily replicate.

Blueprints:
Water breathing basket: The starting tool of every Underwater Basket Weaver. Carrying this basket allows a user to breath water of any kind as though it was fresh air for up to an hour. This time refreshes as long as the basket is above water in a 1:1 manner.
Requirements: Weaving 1, Metaphorical Understanding 1.
Resources: 200g Seaweed, needs to be woven while the Seaweed is wholly submerged in water that is half salt- half freshwater.
Time: 1 hour.

As you can see, a System comes with some tags. These are mostly there to give you an idea of how the specific System works and how it might differ or be similar to other Systems (think the Shard is trying to make sense of the illogical human idea of Magic and fit it into a logical Meta-System). You then have some different parameters that are relevant to how much you can achieve with that System. In this case it would be your skill at weaving and your understanding of the metaphorical values of different materials etc. (in this System). Increasing those parameters might either lead to unlocking new blueprints or might be necessary to craft created blueprints. Power is a parameter shared by every System. It determines how strong the effects you currently can achieve with this System are. All parameters of a System can be improved through fitting actions (for example practicing weaving, looking up different plants, crafting lots of baskets).

Earlier I mentioned created blueprints. If you come up with an effect that you want to achieve that can be done. It creates a blueprint (or a spell, ritual,...) and gives you pointers on what you will need to achieve the desired result. If it's out of reach it might be incomplete. Have an example:

Indestructible basket of endless fireballs (soulbound): This basket is practically indestructible, being able to withstand being at point zero of a conventional nuclear bomb. Furthermore it allows the user to pull out a fireball every 5 seconds. These fireballs can be thrown for a distance of up to 50 meters. They explode in a fiery blast of a 2 meter radius after they either strike any object or reach their maximum distance. Only the crafter can pick up this basket or use any other property of it.
Requirements: Weaving 5, Metaphorical Understanding 4.
Resources: a strong material?, something hot?, needs to be woven in hot/boiling water?, a drop of the crafter for the soulbond?
This works in a similar way for any spells, rituals,... you come up with. If they are way out there the information might be more sparse, or you might not even get the requirements you would need to pull it of. The reverse is also true.

[X] Chris(topher) Lehane: Your struggles with school came to a heap when you were diagnosed not only with ADD but also dyscalculia. Thinking that you'd never amount to anything in your life you went to bed, and woke up with a very confusing early Christmas present. Trying to make heads or tails of your strange thoughts you are glad for the upcoming holidays, even if you will have to deal with you exasperated dad ("Why can't you just concentrated? Maybe you should go outside more. Don't you have a clique to run around with?")(December 2009)

Hmm, I originally wanted to give 12 hours for the character selection, than realized I wouldn't be home then. But time zone stuff means that now the vote time was mostly during the night for the US, right?
I guess I'll have to keep that in mind in the future. But, for now, to get this started: Vote is closed!

And our protagonist is going to be Missy, at the ripe old age of 10 ("Nearly 11!").
I'll start with creating a basic Character Sheet and then work on the first chapter. Should be up in less then two hours, I guess.

12h is pretty short for vote deadline. Most quests usually give day or more.
The quest barely even appeared in the alerts.

Hmm, true.
Whelp...guess I'll give some more time. Just wanted to get started, before I chicken out of writing again ;)

Okay, so. Voting is open till at least 24 hours after my initial post, that is till 6:30 (am, in UTC+2) on the 5th.
Sorry for the confusion and unclear communication :/

Taylor and Missy are extremly common in fics and quests so going with the path less traveled. Also I would echo leaving votes open for at least 24 hours given that we have people from all parts of the world on this forum so a shorter vote time will leave some unable to participate.

Frankly the idea of making personal magic systems is incredibly interesting to me.

On a further note though. Kid Win the Adaptable Tinker honestly makes the most sense to have such an Adaptable Power. His entire power was based on adaptability. Now while the others could be versatile with their powers it wasn't nearly in line for them as it was for Kid Win. Furthermore shard wise if it is the same Shard. Chris has a tinker based shard, which probably works the best for such a tinker like thing. We're literally making blueprints. Vista and Taylor don't do that.

As Such I dare say the most Rational choice is. Kid Win.

Kid Win.

Just to clarify: you don't need to create a System that uses blueprints. It could also be invocations, or rituals, or interpretative dances or or or... ;)

[X] Missy Biron: Your parent's fighting has been getting worse and worse, and during one of the nights while their shouting kept you from sleeping, something in your mind broke. At least that was, what it felt like at first. You knewmagic wasn't real, that was a thing kids believed in. And at ten you are obviously no longer a kid!(March 2009)

However all of them are called blueprints

Nah, that's cause of the "Crafting" tag of the System. For a non-crafting System those could be anything else. They are similar to blueprints, in the sense of giving instructions you need to follow to reach a certain result. But they could also be much more free form if the relevant System called for it (think bending à la AtLA for example).

Even if that weren't the case. Where the blueprint, invocation or what have you. You must think of, then build then you can gain the resources acquired to it. Akin to making and developing a blueprint.

The other side of it is where the crux of the statement lies. Taylor is based on controlling insects and later on people. Missy Biron is based around manipulating space. Kid Win or Chris is based on adaptability or modular forms. As Such Kid Win is most akin to the Magic system proposed in this game as the power of the character. Thus why I felt like stating it.
