Buffy the Vampire Slayer Take Two

I know it's probably not an issue on Amy's mind right now, but I'm wondering if her mother's death has made her more financially secure. It depends on how much her mother had saved up and whether their house was paid off. Not much comfort, I know, but hopefully she won't have to worry about money for a while.

Nightmare Bleed
You decide to learn magic from Ms Calendar with Amy this week. Amy's surprised you're going with her, and really quiet. She's always been a bit on the quiet side, and recent things haven't helped with that. There's an intensity to her as she listens to Ms Calendar teach. You don't get a lot of what they're saying. Magic has a lot of symbolism in it, and that's not even getting into the various ways to channel it. Elemental magic, channeling gods, drawing on one's own inner pool of power, rituals, it's all complex. Using things that have been standardized and resonate with the magic caster is the safest way, though talented and powerful magic users can create from scratch. You're impressed when you realize Ms Calendar is one of those, as she's helping to invent a lot of the technomancy she and her coven use.

Of course, life is always interrupted by the weird eventually. Now that Buffy's here and Jesse's dead you can't stop seeing it. Seeing Wendell getting swarmed by spiders was the start. At least that was relatively benign. That many spiders are freaky, but spiders alone aren't scary. Willow was freaked out, and you did your best to assure her, but your calm confidence was sadly not boosting her like you felt it should. You did go as a group to talk to Wendell, and found out that he'd had repeated nightmares of spiders attacking him, a nightmare induced by the guilt of his brother killing his pet tarantulas when he went to camp for a week.

Willow was stuck on the theory people's nightmares were coming to life. Definitely a subject you were willing to avoid, focusing on watching a punk be humiliated by his overly doting mom instead. You and Willow headed to class, and...

Your clothes were gone. Everyone was laughing, you were standing in front of the entire class naked, and you were awake. This was an actual nightmare. You turned and fled. Sadly your clothes did not reappear, leaving you naked in the school until you managed to dig out your gym clothes. Alright, Willow's theory was real. Nightmares were coming to life, and you had to stop them before you ended up naked again.

Giles knew the answer at least: a boy in a coma in the hospital was escaping the dream world, and bringing it with him into reality. Not really something you knew how to fix, but that's what Buffy was for. You had to find her, before the nightmares got much worse. You thought of Ms Calendar and Amy. They had to be told.

Is this entirely new, caused by the butterflies we've put into play? I don't remember reading any fanfiction about Xander's clothes disappearing.

And Amy is obviously badly affected by her mother's attack. Hopefully, having Xander around helped a little, though magic doesn't sound like a good fit for him.

I have no idea what Buffy is supposed to do here. This seems like a job for the magic users. Also, was Willow at the magic session, or has she not started learning yet?

I'm kinda interested in what a more subtle approach might look like here.
Buffy might not be needed. I'm curious enough to see if this can be handled without her.

Xander in Canon managed to face his fear head on and literally punched it out.

I want to see Xander help Amy and Jenny to do the same with their fears.

It's Punching time!

Nope, that was quite canon, because of daytime television he was still wearing boxers of course, but he had multiple nightmares come to life and that was his first. Though I'm wondering if the later ones will be a bit more realistic this time, after all Buffy had a pretty serious fear in canon while the others rather got comedic brush-offs.

I imagine Willow would realistically fear her friends dying to vampires more than stage-fright, Xander would fear his abusive parents and being abandoned more than a clown, and Amy will obviously be having a nasty encounter with her mother.

I'll be honest I'm a bit sad it doesn't seem like we've helped Amy much at all and we're still not particularly close, even compared to the girls.

You have helped Amy more than it seems, she's just feeling shaken after everything that happened

Nightmares
"I'll get Amy and Ms Calendar!" You raced down through the school halls. You could catch pieces of other students' nightmares playing out as you ran past looking for the computer lab. You turned one corner in time to see your dad punching your mom out. You knew it was a nightmare. Your dad wouldn't do that at your school where he could be caught, and he certainly didn't do more than slap her a bit when they got really into their arguments. It was still hard to focus on continuing.

You hit the computer lab and found Ms Calendar and Amy desperately chanting together in a small circle holding back a figure of darkness that swarmed against their barrier and kept trying to lunge through. "Hey!" You looked around and found the AC. With a flick you turned it on. The room chilled, and against the too strong wind of the AC the smoky darkness dispersed. The pair relaxed.

"Xander," Ms Calendar greeted calmly.

"Hey Ms C, Ames, thought it'd be good to grab you guys." You ran through a hurried explanation. A kid named Billy was in a coma in the hospital, and had escaped to the school from his dreams dragging the nightmares along with him. Ms Calendar listened calmly and looked at Amy. "Well this is certainly not anything I've heard of before, but I'm sure we can come up with something."

It was a relief to have the two magic users stepping up. Ms Calendar was mostly leading the way, pointing out the parts of the ritual they were making would need to cover and what safety they could use. Amy helped adapt it using one of her rituals calling upon Morpheus for sleep and protection in dreams. They needed Buffy to act as the guide for Billy, so you had to go and find her.

It wasn't too surprising that she was a vampire, though you kept your jokes light so she wouldn't think too much of it. Buffy was more than relieved to hear that Ms Calendar and Amy had come up with a solution and followed you back to where the ritual was happening. Amy and Ms Calendar finished up their circle and settled Buffy in the middle. Then they began to chant.

You could feel the power build and roll out. Buffy seemed to check out halfway through the ritual, and when she awoke a couple moments later it was with a wide grin indicating success. The ritual had worked, and Buffy had guided Billy back to where he belonged while Amy and Ms Calendar banished the nightmares back to where they belonged.

Amy was thrilled to have had one of her spells successfully modified. She hadn't dared to try and do that on her own. Ms Calendar warned Amy that she wasn't at the point of doing that quite yet, but that they would get to the point where Amy could try to do more on her own. For now that was strictly for emergencies. You suspected Amy would be getting a lot more experience than Ms Calendar was thinking of with that.

The good news was that school was approaching the end of the year. The end of year dance and crowning of the May Queen is coming up. Cordelia and her posse are of course going crazy with Cordelia set on being crowned as May Queen. Which wouldn't be so bad, if you weren't being excluded from the tiny chocolates she was handing out to get people's votes, claiming she didn't need votes from the losers. It was time to start the traditional roasting of the popular kids for chasing after such a meaningless title-only Buffy revealed that before she'd moved from LA she had been the May Queen, reminding you that she had been popular before she'd been forced to move here. Which, awkward. How were you supposed to do the annual roasting of the popular kids in stuff you were shut out from when Buffy longed for it? It looked like you were gonna need to make new plans for the dance.

Glad that went well! At one point, I was afraid that Xander's Chaos Magnet issues would interfere with the ritual. And Amy had things go right for once!

I don't know if this is a good idea, but I want Buffy to have fun even while being excluded. Though, wasn't there some sort of attack during the dance in canon?
