Shinki looks at you. "And what, exactly, is one of your kind doing here? My realm was sanctioned and separated. If you have come here to destroy it, know that I will not allow my children to suffer with a passive hand."
You smile. "I assure you neither the Buddha, nor myself, desires anything of the sort. Instead I came here to speak to you of a rather personal matter. One quite… sensitive."
Shinki recomposes herself after a moment, her expression flattening into studious neutrality. "Is that so?" She studies you for a second, before seeming to reach a decision. "In that case, we shall discuss these matters in a more appropriate setting. Come along."
She murmurs a few words to a few of the demons closest to her, bearing marks of status, as she imperiously turns away and begins her journey back towards the seat of her power. As you step after her, you can see the slow machinery of delegation begin to act, as orders to disperse are passed along, and the legions of Makai begin to stand down - but not without grumbling. You can hear complaints about a missed lunch break, in the distance.
And, you can't help but notice, a good quarter of the army is
not dispersing, instead following after you, their eyes sharp and weapons ready at your back. In the rear, you can see Cirno, engaging in an argument with what looks like one of the generals.
So be it.
With a wave of her hand and a flash of her nails, a rift appears before Shinki, then, without another word. She steps through, and you follow.
This, then, is the heart of Shinki's power.
The first thing that strikes you is the air - the scent of ash and fire, the airborne dust and grime of civilization, the heat of Makai itself - all are absent. The air is kept clean, dry, and cool.
The next thing to catch your attention is the view - a large room, elevated high, high above the ground, the top floor of a grandiose tower far taller than anything ever constructed by human hands during your life. The far walls are made of purest glass, and so you can see the entirety of her realm unspooling before your eyes - yet more rectangular towers of metal and glass surround you, creating an artificial scene of towers and valleys, though none are as tall as the one you currently inhabit.
Light spills out from nowhere in particular - Shinki has decreed that her office will be well illuminated, and her realm has obeyed, without the need for anything so pedestrian as a lamp.
The floor is austere marble, while Shinki's desk is a monolith of metal and glass to match the tower it stands within, and. Neatly stacked pages are stacked high, though the presence of a half-drained mug of some dark substance and a messy spread of paper disrupts the organizational perfection.
A small, framed image of a girl with yellow hair is present.
"Is this your… home?" you ask.
Shinki smiles, and for a moment, you can see a hint of exhaustion in her eyes. "... I spend far more time here than in the palace, so I suppose it might be, in some sense. But no, this is merely where I do administrative work… and diplomatic meetings."
Her eyes flick to the side, where the sound of chatter has steadily become louder, as the other inhabitants of this floor of the tower realize that a guest has arrived. "Stacy, shut the door and engage the wards, would you? I won't be taking calls for a while."
One of the smaller demons startles, rushing forward from her spot at her own desk. "As you command!" As the door smoothly glides shut, the external sounds abruptly cut off, and you can sense some intricate spellwork engage. Privacy, even from her own minions, then, as she takes a seat.
…The
only seat, in fact - there are no other chairs in the room.
Shinki leans forwards, her elbows propped up on her desk as she laces her fingers together, examining you. "What business, precisely, does the Buddha have with me?"
"We must discuss your wayward daughter, both of them." You look towards the portrait sitting upon the desk. "You must be proud."
Shinki's eyes sharpen, as her tone grows colder. "I'm immeasurably proud of Alice, yes. So you'll understand my…
concern at outside forces taking an interest in her."
"The worry of every parent no doubt, though, if my information is correct… and please do forgive me, despite what some may believe I am far from all-knowing. You have no sires of your own, by blood?"
"... I do not, no. And I cannot imagine I would have missed such an event." She swivels upon her odd chair, looking out at her realm. "I do have, of course, innumerable creations born of my will - are these what the Buddha speaks of?"
"No, I am here to discuss Alice Margatroid and Koakuma." You say gently. "None of your subjects are under our judgment. Not that we judge to begin with in any case."
Shinki blinks. "Koakuma?" Her frown deepens. "That's not a name, it's a description. A small devil, an imp. There are thousands that fit the criteria, and I can't imagine someone using it as their… their
name. Not in the sense that the Buddha would speak of."
"Then I shall be more specific," you reply. You move past her desk, looking out over the city of gleaming glass for a moment. Then you look at Shinki once more. "She resides in a mansion upon the surface, in the company of a vampire and her servants. We know precious little about her, except that she works in the library… but there is something more to her. That was all the Buddha informed me of. She will be necessary for our goals, in any case."
Shinki's frown deepens further, and she snaps her fingers. A small metal case drops into her hands, which she unfolds, revealing a gleaming glass surface on the top face and a variety of strange buttons on the bottom. Shinki begins tapping at the device, as the glass surface begins to project an array of images, here and gone too quickly for you to make sense of them.
"... to the best of our knowledge, the sole remaining vampires are present in Gensokyo. A ' Scarlet' family." She scoffs, "How on-the nose." She continues tapping, her frown growing deeper. "... I
do have agents in Gensokyo, of course. But there are no records of a devil being sent as an envoy to this vampire clan. Are you…" She trails off. "Of course you're certain, playing games like this wouldn't be your style."
She closes the strange contraption, then vanishes it. "... I suppose that this is a matter of interest for Makai after all. Some strange demon not acting upon my orders, with the possibility that… what, some strange ritual created her from my essence? I'll need to examine this supposed 'daughter' of mine."
She turns to you. "... and don't think I haven't noticed. You still haven't answered my question - what are your interests regarding my daughter… or daughters, as the case may be?"
"I was not aware that you were unfamiliar with this 'Koakuma' but in any case, she is a non-active entity, and she shall need to be active soon. As for Alice, you know yourself what she hides. That much has been told to me. She is far from what she appears to be. They are but two of many I have been sent here to beseech for aid."
"... Aid?" Shinki's eyes are tightly focussed upon you now. "Why would the Buddha want… ah. The Moon, already?"
You smile. "You say that as if they have not caused a ruckus before? There are many things we Bodhisattva are capable of dealing with, but we are… pure."
Her voice goes distant. "The Lunarians were building up towards something, yes - always pushing the boundaries of what they could do… but I was convinced it would remain mere saber-rattling, at least for the rest of the century. But for you to come before me now…"
Your smile fades. "Indeed, it can no longer be tolerated. I am the first, last, and only messenger before more drastic action is taken. The Asura would be less kind."
That startles a small laugh out of her. "I can only imagine!" The smile fades quickly, however. "... yes, this is something that I will have to act upon, immediately." She snaps her fingers once more, and the door to her office opens.
Outside… it seems like all of the secretaries in the building have crowded around the door, eagerly attempting to catch the slightest hint of what has happened through the wards. The murmuring of gossip rises up like a tidal wave at the sight of you, before being cut off at the knees at Shinki's words. "Sally, I'll be taking a trip to Gensokyo with our guest - please distribute incoming paperwork to the appropriate departments. Anne, reach out to the military heads and have them prepare for outside deployment at my command - full readiness status. The rest of you, back to work!"
"Thank you for your assistance in this matter," you reply. "Shall we go in the morning then? I am staying in the Hakurei Shrine for the time being."
Shinki visibly weighs her options. "Yes, that would be for the best - it gives me time to properly organize all this. As for accommodations…" Her eyes stray to the gossip prone devils as they disperse. "Perhaps it's for the best if you rest in my palace, rather than anywhere less secure."
You smile for the last time. "Thank you, I shall take you up on that offer. Might I ask that you ensure that Cirno returns to the shrine? This is no place for a fairy such as herself."
She idly waves her hand as a gate opens in front of you, leading to an immensely well-furnished guest room. "A trifle, consider it done."
You step forward into a vision of… well. "Luxury" is an understatement. The floor is made of marble, with silver and platinum inlays, all put together with extraordinary craftsmanship to depict scenes from the mythology of Makai in exquisite detail, nearly lifelike in depiction. The desk and bedposts appear to be made of solid orichalcum, the impossible blend of silver and gold held together with purest magic. The bedspread is silk that shimmers with iridescent colors, some of which are beyond mere nature.
A series of bells carved from various precious stones are atop the desk - one of ruby, one of sapphire, one of diamond, each larger than a fist. Magic is bound up in them, signals to request assistance from the staff of this palace. Compared to this place, the Buddhist temple that bore your name was nothing more than a hovel.
"How very… opulent." You say quietly.
"Yeah?" a new voice speaks up, female, close. You turn around to find yourself facing-

[] [Nue]
Nue the Nue looked… concerned? How very uncharacteristic for her kind.
[] [Sariel]
Sariel desperately wanted to talk to you. She may be useful soon, in fact… you knew she would be.
[] [Yumeko]
Shinki's maid. She had been apparently sent to wrangle information out of you. You suppose Shinki would like you more if you played along.
