Admittedly I'm also mix on it due to the existence of Nursery Rhyme, being a literal collection of stories. However, bending the rules is also part of the Nasuverse, and rule of cool often... rule. So like.

Because the contents of the Marble reflects the Master's mind, it will be strongly influenced by the Master's favorite books 『Alice in Wonderland』 and 『Through the Looking-Glass』 that composes the thoughts of her mind. Aspects of the ability include the summoning of the monster 「Jabberwock」 and the 「The Playing Cards」 and fading a person's very existence itself starting with their ego with the 「Nameless Forest」, etc. These are all influenced by the picture books that Alice read with great delight during her lifetime.

I don't think Alaya is trying to understand what it is, since that imply thought. I'm not saying that to be mean, I'm saying it isn't capable of thoughts or intelligence, it's closer to a phenomenon that act upon the collective of the unconsciousness of humanity and abides by it. Even if the action itself will bring harm to it, if humanity wants it, it act upon it.

In Kara no Kyoukai, Touko used an example of the "ideal ruler." Pretty much, a great leader unify the world and make it all peaceful and shit. Achieve the perfect balance between peace and competition, no suffering, people lives in prosperously, making advancement, and retaining all that make them humans(unlike QSH), and all that good shit. Nothing wrong with the reign and is great for human future yeah?

The counterforce would have it eradicated. Sure the all of humanity appreciate them and whatnot, but they would have unified envy of them and thoughts like "if only they wasn't there." So then Alaya would then act upon the unconscious wish and snap the fucker's neck.

I mean while I would consider that to be more normal true. Light fucks with that heavily and why it could matter. Given its nature to manifest human concepts like a unconsciousness of humanity into physicals forms.

Darkness is bottomless as it is, it has room for more Ashes and Embers
Just because branch us pruned doesn't mean it stopped existing
Only that it has been mulched

Edit and if it were simply a phenomenon before it's not now with all the light flowing into it
