Blood of the Gods: A Fantasy CKII Quest

Honestly that kind of mystic mojo and genius is what we would need for the bold new world of our children's dynasty. It would probably be way too convenient, but if his idea of Ma'at and our idea of Ma'at were interchangeable enough...

Well...

We just confirmed he was homosexual. He's unlikely to take it well.
Still, we could use him, given the right support.

Interesting, and useful. That gives us a couple of hooks. He wants his family restored, and probably has his eyes on the throne (since he is smart, talented and probably thinks he can do a better job than us). We can at least look into his family history and see how they fell, and we can probably convince him not to usurp us if we demonstrate that we are capable enough (fortunately, this should not be too hard as we have very good stats).

Although... oh dear. That must have been some really dangerous and powerful magic there. Certainly I don't think we can rely on this sort of magic very often.

To those saying we can use him... No, just no. Not only does he have more divine support than us, but he is slowly gaining popularity and control of the army. We can't reliably control him with seduction or his family, his house betrayed him and what better way to bring it back to prominence then to make it the royal house? What better revenge is there then to give royal authority to your family and then show how the Pharoh rejects said family?

He needs to die soon, all this talk of blessings only proves one thing, he is the final boss of this quest. He Dies or we Die. That's the only option.

Attacking another person with a major blessing up is easier said than done.

Cavalier rolled genetics when our character was born.

Also, one of the issues in Egypt was the intermarriage thing, which, unless your genetics was 100% pure, perfect and unchanging (which isn't the case), problems are bound to crop up.

Hoo boy.
Okay, we definitely need genius, strong, attractive spouse.

Practically certain to backfire instead yes. If we align with him, we can use his blessing to our advantage against external foes...if we go against him...this blessing would ensure we ruin ourselves trying.

Well....we can use his drive to bring back his family. But we should never, ever, trust him.

Wenamun, the Chief Royal Scribe
Age: Late twenties? Early thirties?

Wenamun is a palace functionary in charge of all the scribes used to conduct correspondence with foreign rulers and provincial leaders. You haven't dealt much with him.
I'm not sure why some of you guys were more concerned with the General who may be a threat long term, rather than Wenamun who could be a threat right now or at least a cause of government corruption and inefficiency. He has been mentioned several times now with reference to his scribes by the author, which may be a coincidence in writing styles, but could also be him giving us hints and directions to pick up on.

The scribes themselves seemed heavily involved with the granaries scheme, and from this chapter we know that scribes are traditionally allocated by the holder of the office which should make us suspect given what occurred. "As such Wenamun could not vouch for the training or suitability of the Overseers". This would be bad for us if the corruption didn't actually start within the granaries themselves, but before then and after all the overseers were the ones fabricating the reports.

From the original quote at the top we also know what his official responsibilities are, and given our character is the Monarch it seems quite strange we haven't had much contact with him as we've aged given his responsibilities. That alone would be cause for concern as don't know about his character, and yet he has a good bit of control over the information that reaches us and goes out.

Wenamun on the other hand boasted an ostentatious collection of gold and jewels on a belt around his kilt, and with bracelets and bracers and a silver amulet hanging over his gorgine.
"I heard Chief Scribe Wenamun had a debtor flogged over only four deben of wheat!"
These also should be causes of concern, at least enough to require investigation into him. Even if he is genuine, the character traits on display seem questionable and thus may not be a good appointment regardless.

Edit - some silly autocorrects like genuine into genius.

The Friends roll is going to be brutal, I bet. We might get a bad trait, or more importantly, we might lose friends!

Which, given that they may be future court, is really bad.
Like, it's one thing if they were nobodies, then...wait, even then they could be useful: remember how Khui go his blessing?

Hmmm. Can we, with sufficient Diplomacy and Intrigue, consistently convince people to sacrifice themselves for us? Then even commoner friends would be useful.

Probably not quite the best idea, as it'd probably like.. taint their sacrifice?

Khui's lover sacrificed himself wholeheartedly and knowingly.

Very good catch. Worth a dedicated investigation action certainly.

Powergaming like that isn't likely to be good for our character's mental health.

I mean if you want our character to be utterly ruthless, I suppose..

More like feeling out the options. Being able to charm people to such degree would be useful.
The king needs to win, everything else is secondary, and all that.

Besides, I guess that in a world where ghosts and afterlife are a real thing, such sacrifice for the good of the country and its god-pharaoh can be viewed in a slightly different light.

They do, but they find it much harder to succeed. Remember the soldiers are loyal to general and pharaoh. Unless you constantly send your armies out on far campaigns under the direct leadership of their generals, they would be hard pressed to move against a ruler they actually like.

This isn't a computer AI system where they're all perfectly loyal to their leader.

Probably. The gods have karmic punishments for those people who do that.

Event: On A Very Special Episode
Meritamun's Creek

A few weeks into your archery training, Paneferer joins you and Ramessu on the target yard. He's been training with the bow since he was ten and readily outperforms you. You turn viciously competitive for a while, but soon realize you're trying a lot harder to get better to beat him. After that you start smiling even as you become more determined than ever to catch up and surpass him.

Ramessu encourages your efforts and has Paneferer assist in helping you find a proper form. You notice he's gotten taller and stronger lately, his features sharpening into those of a man instead of a fresh-faced boy. You're not above teasing him a bit when he puts his hands on your arms to guide you into position, or when you're directly shooting against him. The first time you do that he actually fumbles his bow, which causes you to laugh and laugh enough that he storms off in a fury. You're sorry when you see him again and try to be a little more respectful. Your offer of a kiss if he ever scores a center hit at 600 feet seems to have lately spurred him to greater and greater efforts, to your considerable amusement. It's made it a lot harder to keep up with him.

One afternoon, with your arms sore following the usual practice, you relax with Tayuheret in the pool and garden of the harem quarters. You lounge on a divan by the running water and enjoy the cool from the mist spraying out while she sits at your feet. She has a graceful and lithe build fitting for a temple dancer, and looks adorable with her legs scrunched up on the divan and her expression in a mix of disapproval and shock at your mention of the bet. Her wide eyes were brown pools and her full lips were pursed in such a serious way, it was so unlike the usual shy Tauheret. So you flicked some water at her, and after a moment of shock she retaliated, and it ended with the both of you laughing.

You gossip a bit, and notice she gets very quiet when you mention how some of the serving girls seem to have started noticing Bakenptah. Your smile was perhaps just a little smug when you realized it, and needled her about it.

"He's clearly taking after his father with his muscles, though his face owes more to his mother. Thankfully including the nose. And his skin is so smooth and toned, with that exotic dark color. No wonder the maids are starting to poke after him. Have you noticed how handsome he is, Tayuheret?"

"I think he's nice," she finally blurted. "He's pretty kind and sweet despite being so strong."

"Oho," you say, and clasp your hands to your face. "It sounds like you have a crush."

"I like him, alright?"

You shift in the divan and look at Tayuheret, appraising her rather like you were a hawk seeing a mouse on the desert floor. "And have you done anything about it?"

She looked shocked at the thought. "No, of course not. What if he rejected me?"

"You won't know if you don't try." Really, the timid act was unbecoming of her. Truthfully it was starting to get a tad annoying. Compared to Paneferer, she at risk of becoming boring. Fortunately, you had an idea about what to do to make things better. She'd thank you if you could give her a little kick into motion.

And that was coming across your mind because Bakenptah was entering the room, coming to meet you to take you to speak with his father. You stood to greet him, adding a little bounce into your step that Ma'atneferure had shown you. He paused, a little bit agog at your overt display. You were pretty sure you could feel Tayuheret's eyes burning on your back, as well.

"Majesty, my father is…"

He didn't get far before you stood on your toes and kissed him. It was… very, very nice. You think you liked kissing.

And as he stood there stunned you broke the contact to turn around toward Tayuheret. "See, that's how you get what you want," you said smugly.

To your surprise she bolted up, tears flying from her eyes and her fists balled. Without a word she fled out of the room crying loudly. She actually startled the eunuch attendants at the door as she rushed past them and out the door. You were caught completely off-guard by this turn of events. Usually you were the one keeping your friends in surprise. You blinked and realized you were still very close to Bakenptah, and as your eyes trailed away from Tayuheret's flight to him, you were surprised yet again.

He was livid.

"Your Majesty," he said icily. "It is unbecoming for you to toy with us like this. You are the Queen and we are at your command. We know this. We know this very, very well. Whatever you feel for us, and whatever we feel toward you, can never escape that. For the sake of your ancestors, exercise some discretion. We are not game pieces on a board to be moved around at your whim."

Bakenptah turned on his heels and left for the door. You reached out haltingly, pausing before you could call his name. You'd messed up badly. You wet your lips and found yourself for once completely devoid of a smart remark or a comeback. And there was a fear in your heart that you'd lost them for good. You had to act, had to apologize, make this better.

But how?

[ ] Follow after Bakenptah. Apologize for playing with his feelings, profusely.
-[ ] You don't like him like that, but you do like him as a friend.
-[ ] You do like him like that.

[ ] Try to find Tayuheret. You clearly hurt her badly and you were just trying to help.
-[ ] You'll help set her up with Bakenptah, any way she wants you to.
-[ ] Maybe it isn't Bakenptah you really wanted to kiss…

[ ] You are not able to deal with this right now. Focus on archery with Paneferer. [+15 to next Martial training roll. Event Ends.]
-[ ] Kissing Bakenptah was fun, but kissing him would probably be even more fun.

Note: I'm keeping the botches at least proportional to what they botched on. So enjoy some bullshit teenage drama.

All sub-votes are completely optional.

@Cavalier , you're playing with fire, considering SV.

Why bother with our boring old friends when we can have bow buddies!

Yikes. So that happened.

Here's the thing, though: Tayuheret is upset at us because we 'stole' the boy she liked. That one's easy to fix -- just don't steal him. Teenage drama is teenage drama, and she'll get over it eventually.

Bakenptah is harder. Much harder. He accused us of playing with him, toying with our friends, and he was right. His good opinion isn't going to be regained by acting normal -- because that would just confirm his suspicion that we were in fact toying with him. We need to make things right.

...That's not to mention that Bakenptah is male, and in line for positions of higher responsibility and authority than Tayuheret could ever aspire to. Our female friend might become a Royal Handmaiden and a courtier we trust for palace gossip; Bakenptah could eventually stand in line for Chief Treasurer or Chief Scribe. If we can only pick one friendship to keep, the choice should be obvious.

@Cavalier, can we write-in a subvote? I was thinking about the conversation with Bakenptah, and having us explain that Tayuheret has a 'crush' on him, didn't say anything because she worried about his reaction, and we were trying to encourage her to do something about it.... that might backfire, but Bakenptah is older (16 y.o.) and more mature (if only due to his dad being Ipy), so he should be able to deal with (or help us deal with) Tayuheret.
