Big Dongs and Long Thongs (A Journey to the Major Leagues Baseball Quest)

[X] Plan: Bunt it Up
- [X] Professional Bunter. You will receive a boost to your Bunt and Speed ratings. However, you will receive a penalty for your Contact rating.
- [X] Catcher. The shot caller. Catchers are expected to have high ratings in Catcher Ability, Fielding Arm, and Game Sense. A good Catcher is a valuable commodity everywhere, and a strong bat isn't required to be a Catcher.
- [X] Desert Eagle. You will receive a boost to your Fielding Arm rating but a slight penalty to your Fielding Error.
- [X] Perceptive
- [X] Patient
- [X] Stubborn
- [X] A public high school with a Division 2 Baseball Team. I'll save some money this way, and help my team climb through the rankings to eventually win the State Championship in my Junior or Senior year!

I voluntarily spoke to my father about baseball for the first time I can remember. He informed me that bunting is something of a "lost art" in baseball, as most people apparently like to hammer it around these days. So, assuming that's true, let's see if we can bring it back!

The rest I chose for a mix of character building and trying to double down on the bunting thing. Catcher boosts our arm, and Desert Eagle does the same. Desert Eagle also fits with the positive traits of Patient & Perceptive. Stubborn doesn't fit with Desert Eagle, but it does seem to balance out the two character boons. We're a patient person, but once we find a spot to sit on come hell or high water we will stay there. And sometimes to our detriment.

From what I know about sports signings, they tend to go to all schools, but being in a decent high school will make it more likely that we get to a good college, if college baseball is where we want to go. And if I know anything about baseball tropes, you never want to be on the fancy team, they always lose.

Whenever you have the chance, please edit in the choice for "What hand do you bat with and throw with?" into your answer. Thanks :)

Just like baseball is a game of statistics (as the QM points out in the opening of his post about Ratings, Attributes and Traits), this quest also is.
So in the spirit of the game, here's an analysis of our options.

In the "what type of hitter" options, there are 3 types of boosts and 3 types of penalties mentioned:
-Boost > small boost > minimal boost
-Penalty > slight penalty > no penalty
We're not sure what their numerical value is, of course. It could be 50 > 25 > 10/0 or 40 > 20 > 10/0 or 10 > 5 > 1/0. Or anything else. Who knows? For the sake of having numbers to illustrate stuff, I'll pick one (and I guess I'll go with the first set), but like I said, it could be completely different.
Either way, these are the options, rearranged for better comparison:

[] Eagle Eye. You will receive a boost to your Eye and Avoid K's ratings. However, you will receive slight penalties for your Contact and Power ratings.
+50, +50, -25, -25
[] Professional Bunter. You will receive a boost to your Bunt and Speed ratings. However, you will receive a penalty for your Contact rating.
+50, +50, - 50

[] Hitting Machine. You will receive a boost to your Contact rating but a slight penalty to your Gap Power and Power ratings.
+50, -25, -25
[] Slugger. You will receive a boost to your Power rating but a slight penalty to your Contact and Avoid K's ratings.
+50, -25, -25

[] Warning Track Guy. You will receive a small boost to your Gap Power and Contact ratings and no penalties to other hitting categories.
+25, +25
[] Speedster. You will receive a small boost to your Contact, Speed, and Base Stealing ratings. However, you will receive a penalty for your Power rating.
+25, +25, +25, -50
[] Balanced. You will receive a minimal boost to all of your hitting categories and a slight improvement to your L/R Splits.
+10, +10, +10, +10, +10, +10, +10, +10 and +10 (maybe?) for L/R Splits

Notable things from the QM's Ratings, Attributes and Traits post:
-Contact: perhaps the most important rating
-Power: easier to develop than Contact
-Eye: affects OBP (one of the most important baseball stats)
-Avoid K's: works well with Eye
-L/R Splits: starts with a 15% negative modifier vs bad matchups
-Running Speed: meh on its own, works well with many other ratings
-Base Stealing: dying art
-Bunt: almost dead art

In light of this, I'd say that, from a general and rather dry and limited point of view, Eagle Eye is better than Professional Bunter, and Hitting Machine is significantly better than Slugger.
-------------------
Moving on to "what type of fielder are you" options, there are only one type of boost and one type of penalty (slight), here:

[] Vaccum Cleaner. You will receive a boost to your Fielding Error rating but a slight penalty to your Fielding Range. +50, -25
[] Desert Eagle. You will receive a boost to your Fielding Arm rating but a slight penalty to your Fielding Error. +50, -25
[] Outfield Clipper. You will receive a boost to your Fielding Range but a slight penalty to your Fielding Arm. +50, -25

[] The Great Wall. You will receive a boost to your Catcher Ability and Game Sense but slight penalties to other fielding categories. Only pick this choice if you have selected Catcher as your position. +50, +50, -25, -25, -25
[] Sixth Sense. You will receive a boost to your Game Sense but slight penalties to the other fielding categories. +50, -25, -25, -25, -25

Notable things from the QM's Ratings, Attributes and Traits post:
-Fielding Error: starts fairly high and every 10 points in it will decrease 1 error per season on average.
-Fielding Range: very much affected by the Running Speed rating
-Fielding Arm: useful to a lot of positions, including Catchers (who would get a penalty to it)
-Game Sense: affects a loooooot of things, including our time at bat

In light of this, I'd say that, while the first three options are numerically equal among themselves, Vacuum Cleaner is arguably worse than the others. As for the latter two, The Great Wall is evidently better than Sixth Sense, but if we choose it, we're limited to Catcher as a position.
------------

I'll likely make a plan in a few hours, but maybe someone else will find this useful in the meantime.

[X] Plan "Good Off the Bat to Be Great On the Bat"
-[X] Bat Left, Throw Right
-[X] Warning Track Guy. You will receive a small boost to your Gap Power and Contact ratings and no penalties to other hitting categories.
-[X] Left Field. Left Fielders are usually the worst outfielders defensively. However, a poor fielding Left Fielder is expected to make up for it with their bat.
-[X] Sixth Sense. You will receive a boost to your Game Sense but slight penalties to the other fielding categories.
-[X] Loyal
-[X] Hard-Working
-[X] Stubborn
-[X] A private high school with a Division 1 Baseball Team. I'm going to a school that strongly supports its baseball team and win the State Championship with them!

Choices to get better fast:
-Hard-Working to get more chances to improve and raise our Ratings
-Loyal to get more opportunities from the coach/staff, included 1v1 training (which offers more than team practice)
-Division 1 Baseball Team to get quality coaching and facilities (which we're addicted to, since we picked Businessman)
-Left Field to let us focus on batting first (but with the quantity and quality of training we should have, we could improve at this quickly as well)

Choices to be a good hitter immediately:
-Warning Track Guy to get a small boost in two of the most important and synergic hitting Ratings
-Warning Track to get no penalties to hitting Rating
-Sixth Sense to get a boost in Game Sense, which helps hitting, among many other things (not to mention better game choices/options)

Epic Bygones would you consider changing loyal to either of Disciplined, Intelligent or Perceptive?

Sure. I'm not married to it or anything. And Disciplined probably fits more with our previous choices. I'll edit the plan.
Actually, since I'm not sure if that works, I'll just go ahead and revote with the change.

Alright, then. Let's see if I can convince any of the current voters to switch to my plan. Would you take a moment to consider Plan "Good Off the Bat to Be Great On the Bat", @meri47 @Corvus Black @Mask @Magoose ?

The most important choice of the plan is Warning Track Guy. This gives boosts to Contact and Gap Power, which not only makes it more likely we hit the ball, but that we send it where we want to send it, rather than right in the gloves of the other team.

Also key is that this option doesn't give any penalties! If we plan to be the best batters we can be to eventually get in the MLB, starting with lower than average Ratings related to hitting is less than optimal. And if our dream is to dedicate our first home run to our late mother, specializing in Bunting doesn't seem very appropriate.

Getting that Game Sense bonus from Sixth Sense is also huge. Not only will it likely help on all kinds of rolls directly related to baseball and games, but perhaps more importantly, it will give us the "best choice", as the QM put it, or "guaranteed outcomes to improve our in-game performance". These benefits are huge.

While the Catcher option also gives us a boost to Game Sense, I worry that such an important, demanding and injury-riddled position will take opportunities away from our batting, which I feel should be our priority. I would love playing in a Catcher quest, in which the position's duties and challenges are at the forefront, but I think that, by trying to get the best of both worlds, our resources would be stretched too thin and we'd end up being subpar in either or both.

I should have changed the name of the new version of the plan, I think. The tally got messed up, though it didn't matter. Good to keep in mind for the future, anyway!

I am in favor for this. Cheers for a blunting pro!

The Quest is set around modern-day (2012 to be exact). So Lucian was born in 1998.

Ah, I thought the below meant that he watched the World Series when it happened.

When you were five years old, you were captivated by the sport known as baseball. Soccer, football, and basketball never held your attention for more than a few minutes, but for some reason, baseball wormed itself into your heart. The first game you ever watched was between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers during an intense World Series. You witnessed the crowd cheer after every pitch, the frightening staredown between the ace pitcher of the Yankees and the cleanup hitter of the Dodgers, and the enthusiastic ump pumping his fist to signal that the hitter had struck out. Something about this world excited you, engrossed you.
