That's not supposed to be the scary part. The knock is. For all we know humans decided to colonize other planets and left earth. This guy was on of those people who refused to leave.
There are a lot of scary parts about it. The more you think about it the more there is that's potentially scary. The fact that there's so much unknown in the situation means there's no specific "scary" thing to focus on.
Because the last man is a legend in his world.
(Yes, that's another story's twist, but not going to spoil it.)
