Scraped from here.

Beep Beep

---Call this world... Ruin----

Such is the way of this world. It's always cloudy. Thick rolling things that on another world would be a blaring signal for rain. It rarely does instead. When it is, it's a lethal, hissing rain that eats anything organic. The clouds never clear, yet it's never quite dark.

Lightning is a constant. The rumble of thunder is notable only when it's stopped.

Yet there are buildings. Ruins of a civilization that could once have been something called human. Towering edifices that even now stand, albeit in ruins. Testament to something that reached for the skies once. They cover the planet almost completely.

There is no green here. Nothing to indicate life as a human would know it. The oceans are deadly things incapable of supporting life.

Yet there are hints of movement about the planet. There are strange towers dotting the countryside. Massive black things that clack and twist. Gears rotate around their length, and they are more like black needles than the skyscrapers that share their height. Periodically lightning will strike them, but it only makes the gears whirl faster.

This is a world that has been ruined. Yet there is still something there.

Near one of the larger black towers a thing moves. Human in form, slightly. In a way it resembles a human woman. The face is an un-moving metal facsimile of humanity. Shoulders and body, just a hint of curves. Yet it's more wires and steel than anything else. It's eyes are black and un-moving glass windows. It's body, shining steel and armor plating. It's hands are claws more than digits to grasp with. One arm has an extendable metallic grasper attached. The other arm is carrying a massive double barreled rifle.

It hangs off one of the ruined buildings. Utterly still for an endless moment.

Then it leaps, and the side of the building explodes into fire. A whirling flying thing howls overhead. Blackened metal and whirling blades, it's a nightmare of whirling death. In it's center a glowing circle ignites and fires again at it's opponent. A massive blob of light blasts out.

The target is already moving at this point. Dashing across the roof and out of line of sight again. The shot misses 'her' by a hair, and the monstrosity moves again to get in range.

Yet 'she's' not there. It whirls in place, and lets out an unearthly shriek.

It's reply is a massive blast of light that bursts through a building and clips the propellers. Denied it's primary means of propulsion, the monstrosity totters in air, and the deliberately drops.

It hits the ground with a thud, and four almost delicate legs lift it up. It's movements are almost frantic right now. It's body rotates upward, so that it's main weapon is facing the building that it's opponent's shot came from, and it fires.

It misses.

The other robot hits the ground with a thump right across from it. The monstrosity moves to target it, but the cannon needs time to charge. The replying shot is a small beam this time. Almost expertly targeted.

It goes into the monstrosity and it jerks as it's cannon dies.

Now truly frantic, it restarts it's whirling blades. But it's opponent has dashed in too close now. The female like robot crouches down, under the whirling blades, and claws forward. Through the hole it just made. And into the body. There it wrenches at something. And the monstrosity stops moving.

'She' pulls out a metallic sphere a second later. Looks at it for a moment, and then drops it. It hits the ground and rolls, little sparks coming off it.

Then 'she' reaches back in, wrenching at the armor and pulling out what looks to be a tank of some sort. 'She' places both hands at the top of it, and sparks fly. 'She' holds until they stop, and discards the tank. Then reaching back in, 'she' pulls out a few gears and bolts which are stowed on a container on 'her' back.

Finished, the robot seems to look over the area, and begins to move away. 'She' vaults and swings through the skyscrapers and to largest tower in the area.

There a door opens on her approach, and she moves inside. There isn't much room here. Enough to pace for a few seconds. It's dark and illuminated by a single red light. It would smell of oil of metal. The robot moves into it confidently, and places her hand lovingly against the lens at the other end of the room. She's still for several moments there. Then briskly she moves towards a small knee high cylinder.

It's almost cute in a way. Yellow and orange, it has a single large lens, and a metal articulator sticking out of it.

The robot's torso hisses open. There is a metal sphere embedded in the center of her body. Gently she pulls it out, and her torso hisses shut. Then she opens the top of the orange cylinder, and places the sphere into it.

Then she pulls out a few gears from the compartment on her back and places them in as well. There are a few clicks. She moves delicately and carefully as she adjusts something internally. That done, she clicks the top shut, and lifts up the cylinder.

She moves towards the lens and holds up the cylinder to be seen. Then holding it firmly against her body, she presses herself against the wall.

There are sparks everywhere as the entire room lights up.

And the cylinder makes a noise.

"Beep!"

The female looking robot shifts her grip. And you feel her speak with you. You know her as mother. And the tower as father. You are content.

Designation: ?
Current Equipment: Child Frame (Articulator, Vocal communicator, tactile communicator, singular camera, treads)

The Child's frame is rather standard for all of your people. It's recognizable, relatively harmless, and very durable. For all intents and purposes you are invulnerable to anything short of very heavy weaponry. The designs can vary some by region, but the basic design is very deliberately kept similar.

Energy Level: 100/100

"Beep!" Animus squawks as it moves around inside the room, it's tiny claw waving around.

It's been but a few days since it has been activated, and it's already starting to learn how to move appropriately. For a given matter of appropriate that is.

"Beep Beep!" The robot rolls over a small tool on the ground, and totters precariously. Then it falls onto it's side. "Beep!" It wails in distress.

Father watches it. There is no offer to help at the moment. And the child waves it's articulator around in distress. For a few moments there is nothing but beeps of distress, but then Animus seems to realize that if it waves it's arm around, the momentum causes it to roll. It takes a few moments to roll enough to push itself up, but it does so.

"Beep!" It seems to accuse Father.

There is a feeling of amusement directed back. Animus got itself up after all.

"Beep beep!" The tiny claw waves threateningly.

In response the ceiling opens up, and a horrifying series of claws, arms, and other strang items move downwards. Animus tries to move away, but it caught almost immediately. It disappears into the ceiling with a distressed beep. Then it set back down a few seconds later.

"Beep!" It pouts. There is no other word for it.

And it changes color to blue. Startled, the robot looks at it's articulator. Then it waves it and changes color again.

"Beep!" Amused it starts to cycle through it's colors.

Mother comes in soon after to see her child pink with green polka dots. She immediately scoops up Animus and hugs it. Amusement, and such pride in it's accomplishment. She cuddles her child for a time, before she starts to leave with it.

This is the first time Animus is outside. It's beautiful to the robot. Everything is so new and exciting. It beeps happily as it's mother shows it various buildings and other ruined areas. Soon it sees other robots.

A massive six legged one twice the size of mother is the first. It's almost all legs, resembling more a daddy long legs than anything else. The sphere in the center moves to track mother, and she waves with one free hand.

As she gets closer, another one comes into view. A strange floating one. It's more like stacks of blocks on top of each other. Each of them rotating around independently. It floats serenely in the air, and little metallic tentacles move around it constantly.

The final one is a squat thing. Four legged, and more like a mobile tank than anything else. It's slow moving, and doesn't appear to be that interested.

Animus twists to watch each of them in turn, unable to tell which to watch and which not to.

Then it's set down.

"Beep?" It looks up at mother.

She steps back, and Animus hears another sound behind it.

"Boop!" Another child frame makes a sound.

Animus turns and stares.

There are three more children there.

"Boop!" One in the lead shifts it's articulator, and a long stick extends.

"Boop!" Animus is hit.

"Beep!" Animus starts to run. It doesn't like this.

The stick wielding child follows. "Boop!"

"Oooh!" A pellet bounces off the stick wielder. As another child joins the fray.

This one has a toy gun.

"Boop!" The stick wielder turns and starts to chase.

Animus stops and turns. And gives off a dismayed "Beep!" As the last child joins in, shining a flashlight right into it's eye.

It turns colors and move away, confusing the flashlight wielder.

I am about to flip my shit.

People actually liked my name. Cool.

Oh, and if anyone was wondering/didn't know, Animus is the latin word for 'Mind'.

[X] Attempt to blend into the surrounding environment, to hide.

or [X] Rapidly change colors to confuse them.

Man, too bad it's not a toy-gun.

[x]Change color and pattern rapidly to over-ride their perception module.

[x] Flashing Colors

Seeing a bit of success in it's tactics, Animus continues to change it's colors rapidly. The flashlight wielder tries to follow it's target for a moment, but the rapid colors seem to confuse it greatly and it slows down.

Amused, Animus starts to intentionally move around the other child frames. The movement combined with the rapidly occilitating colors makes it very difficult for the other children to focus properly on it.

"Beep!" The gun-wielder's shots go wide around Animus, and does a little twirl.

"Oooh!" It's not happy about missing, and continues to fire the pellets.

Only to get ambushed from behind by the stick wielder. "Boop!" It smacks the gun wielder on the head, and that one makes a distressed noise.

Animus gives an amused. "Beep!" And changes colors again.

Then the flashlight wielder impacts directly into Animus' back, knocking it over. It lands right on the camera, and there is a crunching sound. It gives a distressed wailing beep.

Which prompts one of the adult frames to intervene. Animus is lifted up by the six legged monstrosity. It stops as soon it registers the movement, and the adult 'looks' at the camera. A tool extends from her center, and the lense of the camera is gently cleaned. Just as quickly as it was picked up, Animus is set down. It moves around some and seeing that it's camera is now clean gives off a happy beep.

The flashlight wielder taps it on the head consolingly. "Eeep. Eeep." It's sorry to damage Animus.

"Beep!" Animus raises it's articulator in thanks, and attempts to change color.

It does for a second, but suddenly the color change cuts out. (Energy 0) "Beep?"

The flashlight wielder flicks it's flashlight on and off at Animus. "Eeep!"

"Beep."

Playtime continues on a bit more, but without energy Animus is unable to play the same. Instead they all play a game of catch with a few of the rocks. It's a clumsy affair to be certain. If their frames weren't neigh indestructible, they would be dinged up immensely.

All to soon to Animus playtime is over, and it's picked up by Mother. It's brought back home, and excitedly transmites images to Father about all it's done. He listens patiently, and encourages it to continue to have fun. He also recharges the energy expended from the playing. Which makes Animus rather happy.

The scene repeats itself for quite a few days. Idealistic playtime with the other children. Flashlight is designated Lux, gun is designated Sagitta, and the stick wilder is Ferrum. They become good friends, to their parents approval. Though Ferrum loves hitting them all still. To all of their annoyance.

To a child, each day is an eternity. So it's hard to say when the next change happened. It started normally for Animus. Mother picked it up, and brought it to the playground. This time though, there was something new there.

A strange rolling thing. In another age and place it would be called a miniature tank. To Animus, it's just another of it's people at first. But it's movement is off somehow.

Mother calls it a child-snatcher. The thing does a circle and Animus notes several red spots on it's sides, tucked right above the tracks. It doesn't have intelligence? Animus isn't able to query further as it is set down next to it's new friends.

"Beep?" Audio communication is so inefficient.

Mother takes a step back and gives an encouraging. "Beep."

Animus turns to look at the child-snatcher in confusion.

It's sudden charge is surprising. "Beep!" Animus and the other children are almost immediately scooped up by a tool in front of the thing, and placed into a strange sort of slot in the center.

It's incredibly uncomfortable. Something like a full shutdown is almost immediately forced on it. It's a sensation that all of the children dislike immensely. They are kept there for several long moments, and then the child-snatcher 'spits' them out for lack of a better word.

They all go flying off in different directions and land on their sides. There are quite a few distressed sounds.

The adults pick up the children and look them over. Seeing no damage, they are all placed back at the starting point.

Animus gives a questioning beep at Mother. She just shakes her head and gives it a pat.

Then the child-snatcher moves again. To the same effect. And general wailing.

Animus is set in the same spot again. The child-snatcher is several meters away. It can cross this distance in roughly three seconds, and capture each of the children in six.

Toy Camo Unit
The camo unit is a rather specialized tool that comes in quite a few configurations and abilities. This one is a training version. It's deliberately power hungry, only allows color change, and is rather large as well. It's also one of the best training tools for optical techniques. Note that the power cost comes from changing the colors, not so much keeping it.

Skills:

Kaleidoscope (Child / 30E): Basic visual misdirection technique. Rapidly changing the colors to confuse and disorient the onlooker. Costs a lot of energy to keep up.
Camoflauge (Child / 10E): Changes the color to match the surrounding area.

If anyone is curious.. Light (Lux), Arrow (Sagitta), and Iron (Ferrum). All latin.

Not really sure what we're supposed to do here, so I'll try one of these two -

[X] Huddle up with the others. Discuss a plan of ?attack?

or

[X] Use Camoflauge. Sneak away?

I'm not sure what we're being told to do by Mother, but I'm guessing we're supposed to get away from it?
