Battlefield 2042

So a site accidentally broke the embargo for the redacted mode.

Article:

Battlefield Portal is a highly customizable and community-driven experience created by Ripple Effect Studios. Through this mode, players can not only build and share their own custom game modes, but all players will also be able to browse and play these modes right from the game. The main Portal menu will have three options, one for DICE-created experiences, a second for Community-generated modes curated by DICE which rotate periodically, and then the editor itself.

Ripple Effect Studios General Manager Christian Grass confirmed that in addition to all of the Battlefield 2042 content being available, Portal includes content from three classic games in the franchise: Battlefield 1942, Battlefield Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 3. Along with specific weapons, vehicles, and gadgets, Portal brings back six classic Battlefield maps, available to use in these custom matches. The list includes Caspian Border and Noshahr Canals from Battlefield 3, Battle of the Bulge and El Alamein from Battlefield 1942, and Arica Harbor and Valparaiso from Bad Company 2.Better yet, all assets from these maps have been rebuilt from the ground up in the Frostbite engine and reimagined for modern technology. The map layouts themselves remain as close as possible to how fans remember them, but for the older maps from Battlefield 1942, destruction physics have been added. When building content in the Portal editor, players have unprecedented control. Senior Design Director Justin Wiebe provided an early look at the process. Starting off, players select the game mode they want to center their experience around and this includes modes like Rush which isn't featured in the main Battlefield 2042 game. In addition, players have the option to center each team on a specific Battlefield game, meaning WW2 soldiers can go up against the new Battlefield 2042 specialists if the player wants. However, teams themselves can't be mismatched with different era soldiers.

Weapons, gadgets, and vehicles can also be customized, letting players dictate which ones are available by enabling or disabling over 100 options. One thing Wiebe made clear is that weapons and vehicles won't be balanced, so naturally, WW2-style content may not be as effective when going up against futuristic tech from Battlefield 2042. However, players have plenty of options for adding their own balance to the game mode by customizing settings like increasing the damage on WW2 weapons or giving more players to the 1942 team. These more granular details are added is through the final piece of Portal, the Rules Editor. This is likely going to be a little intimidating for those not familiar with programming, as it utilizes a very impressive visual scripting editor, allowing users to input their own logic and custom rules. During the demo, Wiebe added logic that healed players after earning a kill as well as swapping the team's weapons in a Gun Game style mode. While the programming may seem overwhelming at first, Grass did confirm that the studio would be producing tutorial-style content and videos to help get all players up to speed if they want.

In addition to publishing their experiences, players can even share the custom logic they've created with the community. From a development perspective, this could really help those who are stuck at a certain part, overcome some hurdle, or perhaps those wanting to develop a game mode with a group. Better yet, every time a change is made to the logic file, the original version isn't overwritten. Instead, it is saved as a new file to be shared, making sure the original version is left untouched.

Grass finished up by revealing that Battlefield Portal will be included in the live-service plans after launch. Content will continue to be added over time and as new content comes to the main Battlefield 2042, it will be available in Portal as well. Most importantly, DICE plans to keep a close eye on community feedback to help shape the future of Portal. If the community feels strongly enough about something, like adding even more content from other Battlefield games, the studio will likely consider it.All in all, the lifespan of Battlefield 2042 appears nearly infinite thanks to this major community feature. While Battlefield 2042 won't have a Battle Royale at launch, perhaps some aspiring player will go ahead and create something along those lines using Portal. At this point, only imagination is the limit. Now all that's left is for EA and DICE to reveal the game's last mysterious mode known as Hazard Zone. According to members of the development team, this mode will be revealed closer to launch, though they teased that it's quite different from the All-Out War side of the Battlefield 2042 experience. Instead of massive maps with tons of players on each side, Hazard Zone places a focus on tight, squad-based action. Unfortunately, no more was said about the game mode but with only a couple of months left before launch, players won't have to wait too much longer for answers.

TL;DR:

Seperate mode developed by Ripple Effect (formerly DICE LA):

Will feature two maps each from 1942, Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 3 at launch + 2042 maps. All remastered or rebuilt in Frostbite.
Includes weapons, gadgets, vehicles, modes (e.g Rush) and teams from all three games.

You can mix and match teams in any map.

Includes what sounds like the visual scripting editor DICE has shown before (in devs note for previous games and what not) that they use to make rulesets for game modes. Allows for simple rebalancing or making full new game modes.

Will be added to after launch. (I imagine they probably plan to at least add a couple maps from BF4 and BF1 at the least, and they'll see from there).

I really hope we can change mechanics in that scripting like playing 2042 with a more classic class system than the specialist system we have and more. It mentioned that Justin Wiebe could change the mechanics in a way where shooting & killing enemies can heal you for example.

Also Tom Henderson says this is each season of 2042:

2 All-Out Warfare Maps & 2 BF Portal Maps. Only thing content wise I wished was 12 All-Out Warfare maps. That said with All Out Warfare + Portal + Hazard Mode (a BR styled map from the sounds of it) + each season have a chunk of free content makes up for lack of SP mode. Just wish we had just some more All-Out Warfare maps on launch.

I am a little disappointed that they didn't choose to put 2142 into this mode, but maybe if Battlefield 2042 does really well we'll get that too. And maybe even Battlefield 1.

Imagine for a moment, giant robots versus WW1 tanks.

I've got a feeling it will be a few years yet until we get Battlefield 2143, especially if the pattern of the last DICE games is any indication. Maybe we'll get BF1 loaded in there as well?

Half the premise of this game seems to be making Battlefield 2142 2 but not really, so don't get your hopes up.

Clearly, Battlefield 2142 was the best battlefield and they're afraid that if they include it, it'll come to dominate the other game modes. :V

I think they'll do 2142 down the line because this game has a 3 year live service AFAIK (was mentioned in an article somewhere) and if Tom Henderson is correct we'll be getting 2 portal maps from older games in each season. So it'll be 30 Portal maps (and maybe 31 2042 maps?) by the end of the live service assuming the same pace of maps being released but IDK if they'll maintain that rate for the portal.

That said I wonder if they are doing a lot of maps for 2042 & Portal is because they are going to do a far-future BF next (released in 2025 because if Portal is 3 years then a BF game will come out then since DICE & EA have never had a 2+ year window where BF game or DLC/expansion was not released) and DICE will have a load of Portal & 2042 maps saying "oh you can keep playing Portal maps & splash on mtx if you really don't like the direction of this far-future title".

So anyone else playing the beta so far I am not impressed. They seem to have removed any positive BFV has done along with still being able to produce a game without a host of glitches.

Weirdly, my experience with the alpha and beta is that it kinda feels as the populace expands, matches have started feeling a lot better?

Lke ultimately I'm going need to how stuff shakes out in the full game because the specialists don't feel particular bad nor does the create-a-class aspect feel like there's one obvious combination to run with (guns categories could use rebalancing but that's a phrase that could be applied to most Battlefields a lot of the time during their game lives), but it's possible one of the specialists yet to be used can be absurdly broken in some circumstances.

But otherwise it's weird, alpha and the pre-order/EA play only beta phases felt like people were pretty whammied by the sheer size of the map and couldn't really figure out a good flow of the map so every match was a chaotic mess.

But now as we're in the open phase, it feels like everybody knows what they're doing, people are actually playing the objective, and i've had four close matches in a row today. Even had the tornado come barging through in one of them and give us the chance to turn it around.

Game's a lot of dumb only-in-battlefield fun when everybody's playing competently. Million dollar question for me is going to be how bad it is when they're not. :V

Played the beta so far for 3-4 hours; honestly feels like they tried to make BF more like Apex Legends & CoD Warzone and ended up as a detriment. Haven't sadly experienced the Tornado yet or seen the Rocket explode. But honestly it feels like BF mashed together with Apex Legends, I mean that was released early in 2019 when 2042 was gearing up for full production.

I haven't played the beta and haven't spent all that much time watching the gameplay of it yet so my opinion may change dramatically the more I see, but I don't like a lot of the changes. Like, why specialists? Why do they look the same regardless of the side they're on? Like, this feels like something that shouldn't happen.

Because you can't monetize generic soldiers in a season pass scheme.

Honestly I think as some suspect this game is balanced & designed aroudn Hazard Zone and not All Out Warfare.

Also another really potentially bad mechanic if interpreted:

Yikes. Kind of explains why scout helicopters where constantly blowing people up. Basically the worst of the fast vehicle respawn servers of BF4. And since all vehicles auto-heal quickly + unlimited ammo...

Yeah specialists are lame and an example of stupid blind trend chasing. It's dumb that when I'm playing as the Russian's 90% of the callouts I hear are sound like Americans. Or how if you're on top of a building with a bunch of other people they're all going to be Mackay clones... because he's the only one with a grapple hook.

Again, I just find the whole specialist thing a bizarre decision when there are dozens of players in each match that it's hard to consider how any of them could be considered a 'hero'.

so I guess in no particular order

1) it was weird for the first day but the vast majority of people seem to have grok'd the visual highlights system that basicaslly every other game on the market is using nowadays. Like it's definitely a bit weird but the vast majority of people I fought with as time went on aren't that dumb

2) generally speaking the whole concept of specialized characters in a FPS context is to provide a relatively easy visual giveaway for what abilities a unit might have in addition to standardized kits, time will tell how much MTX customization will fuck with that like it has for every other game including the granddaddy of Team fortress 2, but everybody in their vanilla outfits seem pretty identifiable at first glance, though yeah some areas it's like you could just make assumptions about what everyone was using. :V

Like yeah people know there's also 60 more Octanes or Captain Prices in the match of [insert popular FPS here] or whatever, it's just...not that big of a deal for most people.

3) also this conversation is just making me think "tell me you never played many Battlefield matches where everybody was using the same class without directly saying that"
Like I still have trauma from my bad company 2 days of everybody deciding they were going be snipers for entire matches as the enemy vehicles were slaughtering us, Battlefield V was the one exception in the clone wars public Battlefield matches commonly experience.

EDIT: ok that last point was too dickish, I think there's an argument to be made about cross team clones.

The problem is the free-for all gadgets in the game, do I know if someone has an ammo crate or an M5 Launcher? Or has the Armor Plate on? Feels like this has filtered through everything because holy crap the health regen even on vehicles is frickin' fast and negates the Repair tool heavily.

On the microtransactions I was looking at the pre order bonuses and for the gold edition there was three outfits one of which seemed to be specialist specific. Which would have been nice for DICE/EA to expand on because so far customizations seem to be across the board rather than operator specific.
