'Cheat' Overload - How is it possible to fail?
The new VRMMO was designed to allow players to play in a fusion between traditional RPG style games where each individual represents only their own prowess, and more strategic PC games, where each player controls a tribe, people, army, nation or the like.

Beginning as the strongest member of a 3 person band of mercenaries, you can either focus on getting stronger individually, or forming a larger group of NPCs.

In order to drive conflict and interest, the developers of Hero, Leader, Ruler decided to give some players special bonuses or 'cheats'. Extra gear, and small advantages were given to pre-order players and those who paid extra for the special edition, but the true 'cheats' were given to big streamers and pro gamers who decided to join the game, and be used in promotional materials.

But one cheat was held in reserve, to be used as a sort of joker. They searched for the right player who wouldn't be able to fully utilize it's power. Who would cause fun and chaos, but not consolidation into one super-nation.

Uchida Ryo was heralded as a great find. The developers discovered her three days after the launch of the game. She had pre-ordered the special edition, and proceeded to run face first into fights that her squad could not handle. Again, and again, and again.

Ryo was specialized as a Red Mage. She used a rare respec currency early on, after realizing her team was getting wrecked, to switch from Black Mage to Red Mage, just so she could have a single heal spell at her level. It didn't help, she managed to progress a bit through the main questline but she still bashed into the wall of the Monks boss rush. She was facing a Level 12 group challenge with a squad that was only level 4-6.

The challenge was designed for 3 players squads to join together. She could survive about 2 and a half minutes into the encounter, which was composed of a series of waves of increasingly challenging monk spawns, and then she would crash and burn at the first real boss spawns. Every single time.

GMs Blacksky and Weirdway agreed. Ryo would receive the special cheat they called the joker.

~

"This stupid game is so hard!" Ryo shouted, as she sat eating lunch, disconnected from the VR equipment while she sat out the 5 minute respawn cooldown.

The game tried to make death a real PITA to encourage careful risk taking, but it just meant she could only play for a few minutes before she had to take a 5 minute break.

She couldn't even rename or customize her squad, they had been assigned randomly, and she got American named characters. Jodi was an archer with green hair and blue fingernails. Kevin was an axe-crazy barbarian, and Keith was her favorite, as an excellent warrior who seemed to prefer a disciplined fighting style. He was the bonus squad member she got for the special edition.

If she had three Keiths, she was sure they would have won, but when she sent Kevin forward he just bashed his headed into the problem and died. Jodi was such a slow archer, she had some nice whallop to her attacks but it took like 5 seconds per arrow, and the special arrows were basically once per run.

These stupid monks all glowed an odd red color for a few seconds whenever they showed up, and then it would go away. No idea what that meant.

She finished her sandwich, and reluctantly went to wash her plate and put it on the drying rack. Tomorrow was the last day of her MMO launch vacation. She had taken the whole week off, and now it was Saturday at noon. Maybe she could ask Keiko how she was doing if this attempt failed.

She washed her hands and then placed the VR headset and body suit on. She used the biometric login to get back into the game. There was a wave of extra text flashing across her screen. She motioned with her right hand to go back and review the messages she had in her inbox.

GM BLACKSKY: Well then. You have been selected for our final SYSTEM reward: Lady of War. Your Sovereign stat has been unlocked, Your Command stat has been increased to 95. You have been fast-tracked to commanding a Company of 3 platoons, each with 2-3 squads. You are the first to unlock their Sovereign stat in HERO, LEADER, RULER! GM WEIRDWAY has some additional tips to give you as you adjust to your new role. Gamma squad is your current squad. As a ruler you are part of a squad that is part of a platoon which is part of a company. You can command other squads in your platoon by giving shout orders, and command other platoons in your Company with Company Leadership Points. These are earned based on your Command stat. Good luck! PS. Quests and Events all have a maximum leadership size that can participate in them. Your current Event has a Platoon cap. Try to defeat it with Gamma and Delta squads together.

"Sweet!" this was just what she needed to keep playing. They knew she was good, despite the struggles.

GM WEIRDWAY: Congratulations. I want to talk to you about the Sovereignty system. This system is still undergoing some updates, so please review any new Patch notes regarding this system. Currently, Sovereignty allows any player with Company or higher Leadership Tier and sufficient Command stat to establish a Sovereign nation on the world map. Introductory areas and the three new player cities are excluded from Sovereignty, but all other areas can be claimed as a Sovereign. Players may pledge their loyalty to a sovereign, and this functions as a sort of guild system, including both receiving taxes from players and distributing rewards and benefits to them. You can form players into larger command units, and with help from other players you can lead a Division into battle. In addition to PvP content, sovereigns unlock special PvE content for the whole sovereign player base to take on. There are many details to cover, I have unlocked the Beginner Sovereignty tutorial chain. You may access it outside the game to study up on this system.

Ryo took a few minutes to calm down after the crazy surprise. She might have shouted too loud. The neighbors would think she was crazy.

After calming down, she activated Delta squad and placed them together with her Gamma squad, forming 1st Platoon.

"Delta Squad reporting in!"

This looked like some serious professionals. They were all level 20, whereas she was level 12, and the rest of her squad was level 4-6. Delta squad all used Callsigns. Bravo was a crossbow user with some wicked looking bolts. Charlie was a Maul using warrior. Victor was a paladin with sword and shield. Whisky was a Black mage. The callsign corresponded to a short bearded man, he tipped his flask towards her when she looked at him. Yankee was the only woman on the squad. She was a white mage, but she didn't look like a pushover. She had a lot of abilities, including a huge defense buff that could spread platoon wide, and a couple of powerful offensive spells.

The last member of Delta squadron was a huge burly man, carrying a massive broadaxe. Here was a truly worthwhile barbarian. He made Kevin look like a child in comparison.

"Ok let's form up. Delta squad, take point, Gamma squad will follow behind. We're going to defeat these monks."

~

"That was awesome. Delta Squad, excellent job out there. Keith, you survived. I thought we were both done for when that group focused on us."

Ryo was giddy. Despite the brief low HP scare for her and Keith at the end, Delta squad got the job done. Now she wanted to know if her two new platoons were as good. On one hand, Alpha and Beta came before Delta, but Delta always sounded like the most badass of the greek letters.

She had gained two levels and the rest of her squad gained a level before dying. Keith gained 4 levels because of being so low level before. Delta squad only gained about an eighth of a level. It would be time soon to move on to better fights! But first, she wanted to meet her other platoons.

Alpha III Platoon was composed of three squads. They were all around level 13 - 15. 1st squad was imbalanced in favor of tanky fighters, second squad in favor of ranged weapons users, and third squad focused on magic. Of course every squad still had one tough guy and one support person.

Personality wise, they seemed more normal, not as amazing and badass as Delta squad, but still they would do the job. She got an initial allocation of Company Leadership points, she wasn't sure exactly what to do with them.

Beta I Platoon was... different. It was an all woman platoon, only two squads, but each squad was 5 members instead of four. It was not a platoon that covered a broad base of capabilities. There were only two classes in the platoon, with one exception. Primarily the platoon was filled with the rare special class: Amazonian. But there were also 3 black mages, and there was one white mage healer for the platoon.

1st Squad was more support focused, with the white mage, one black mage and three Amazonians. Second squad was three Amazonians and two black mages.

She didn't actually know how the Amazonian class worked. She thought maybe like a subclass of Barbarian? She decided to play around with the Beta platoon before looking for an Event that supported her whole company joining.

"Set active platoon: Beta I Platoon."

SYSTEM: CONFIRMED. You must choose an squad in Beta I Platoon to join.

"Set active squad: First Squad."

SYSTEM: CONFIRMED.

How did she deactivate the Company level of organization, so she could join as a Platoon?

She found out as she continued the quest line. There had been a series of bandit attacks in the outlying villages of the Cooperative. Now she was going through a forest where they had traced back the bandits' hideouts.

SYSTEM: Quest chain cannot be attempted with any Leadership unit larger than a Squad. Detach Beta I Platoon / 1st to attempt this quest?

"Yes."

Beta Platoon was about the same levels at Alpha platoon, but she was impressed with their coordination, as 1st squad advanced by her command. The Amazonian class had water magic. So Barbarian plus a little magic? That was pretty good. The Black mage softened up their enemies, and their White mage even joined in with her powerful spells. No one needed healing.

Ryo focused on blasting the bandits whenever she could avoid hitting the Amazonians. The three members of that class all used halberds with brutally sharp and jagged blades on the far end. The knives and cutlasses of their enemies were no match. Against the leader of the bandits, the Black mage focused on debuffs, and Ryo joined with the white mage in healing the Amazonians. They were not as durable as a warrior, wearing little armor, but one full healer and herself being a half healer, they were able to advance the questline.

She could have continued the squad level battles of the main questline, but it was a bit dull. Time to look for a Company level event.

~

Why didn't they allow phasing? Since launch day, Nightmare Fear guild members had joined up into three person teams, and completed platoon level content together to reach level 20 as fast as possible, and attempt the first raid tier.

Wasting time on the Leadership or Ruler path was stupid. Beta testers had found that on the Hero path, your starting squad, or a slightly tweaked squad, could become extremely powerful, and all it took was a good guild to group up for Platoon, Company and Division level raids.

But they didn't have phasing for this first Level 20 event. Instead guilds could claim half-hour slots. Or maybe more than one because the Ryo guild had claimed 7 of them! He didn't recognize the Ryo guild, but 7 seemed excessive. Maybe even an exploit. There was only one other guild on the schedule. Lizard Brain was a major rival of theirs, but they had claimed 2-3:30 am.

Ryo claimed 11-11:30 am, 11:30-12:00 am, then there was a half hour gap, and then 12:30 - 3:00 pm was all claimed by Ryo. It was only 1:30 so they had 90 minutes to wait.

He tried to claim from 3 pm to 12 am, but the system would only allow him to claim 1 hour. F*cking special edition players. Must be something like that right? Or was it a cheat?

He tried to look up the guild name, and found nothing. Bugged, cheat, hack!

The rest of the guild spread out to do more quests, but Brolo waited to confront the guild when they came out.

...

It was 2:45 pm, and the Ryo guild appeared back from the Raid area. He started looking at the players in the guild, to see if he recognized any of them.

"What the hell, NPC, NPC, NPC? What is this, level 10, your whole squad??!"

"Ryo guild, what drops did you get?" he continued.

One girl responded. "Just some minor loot. Couldn't defeat the first boss."

The rest of the company vanished, like they all decided to log off at the same moment. She had a squad of all girl Amazonians, all of them under level 20. First of all, how did she get that fsking squad? Second, why not reach level 20 before trying this content?"

"Boring, anyway, I'm going to log off, and try tomorrow."

He didn't get a chance to harrass her about claiming 3 and a half hours of raid spots. She was gone.

He had a sick, funny kind of feeling in his gut. He checked to see if his gut was right. "What the hell?!!!"

One person, running a whole company? Those beta testers screwed him and his guild over, if one Ruler path player could have a full company. Underleveled sure, but still! Damn!

~

Ryo had proven them right. She was completely bone headed, and disregarded the level of challenges, and she wasn't skilled enough at the game to make up for that.

GM Blacksky watched Ryo's fifth attempt at their Level 20 Company level raid. That would normally be a 9 player raid, organized in 3 platoons of 3 players each. Eventually, players taking on the Leader or Ruler path would be able to solo these kind of challenges, but with Ryo's cheat she was able to attempt that a lot earlier. 95 command was ridiculously high, but she hadn't really taken advange of it yet because she didn't understand even Platoon level command yet.

She was the epitomy of biting off more than you can chew in a player. The terms and conditions of her cheat meant they could share video of her Raids / Events on socials. Eventually, they'd need her to cooperate on a media tour, or at least get active on socials but for now they were focussed on just showing off the game and their hopeless girl.

Gamma squad was only 4 strong, and capping out at level 8, so they wiped on the trash mobs. Gifting Beta platoon had been his idea. It was a platoon that took a lot of skill to effectively play. Barbarians took some skill to know when to rush in, and Amazonian armor and HP was even lower. They required an active and dedicated commander.

Each run, Ryo would either embed with the Beta / 1st squad, or with Delta squad in 1st Platoon. This was time it was Delta, and they were the only properly leveled squad for the encounter, but that crazy girl struggled to command Beta platoon while being in another platoon, and so all of Beta platoon fell early on in the first Boss fight. The lack of healing in Squad 2 actually lead to them losing an Amazon on the trash mobs as well. She never tried embedding in Squad 2 to boost their healing.

Down one platoon, Alpha platoon couldn't take the pressure, they were underleveled but at least they had a balance of DPS, Tank and Healer. Delta then crumbled. A single squad couldn't face a whole Company level threat.

Delta squadron were classified as a Hero path squad. They were stronger than any Ruler path should be able to have, but that was the Cheat, right?

If he was trying to help her, instead of memeing, he would tell her to play quest level content, rotating between squads. Start with Gamma squad, get them up to Level 12, then re-run that first Level 12 event she tried with 1st Platoon, After a while, go back to Squad level questing and improve Alpha's squads, then do more Platoon level events with them, and then finally level up Beta platoon with the combo of questing and events as well.

It was a slow path, but with such a large command structure, it couldn't be helped. At least getting Gamma leveled up a bit would help. Memes demand something new every time, so it would be good if Ryo leveled up Gamma for a bit, so they didn't get insta-wiped on the trash. He would send a message about that.

If Ryo continued to fumble, they might have to give her another cheat, just to amp up the funny. What if she got "Heroic Ruler"? It was a playtesting cheat they never planned to deploy, but it would give Ryo the best of both the Hero path and the Ruler path. She could make Gamma squad into a super squad, but also continue to grow her command structure. And then try a level 50 Division level raid with level 30 units. Of course she would do something like that.

Brolo: I saw her. I thought Ryo was a guild, until I thought to do a player search. Guys, do you think Ruler path is broken?

JoMax: No, I've seen the clueless morons. They still have a squad just like the Heroes, it's just a weaker and pathetic squad. Leader path is a second playthrough kind of thing if you get bored. Ruler path is for insane people, and morons. She's probably just found bug in the system.

Brolo: Yeah I think so, she claimed 7 spots on the Raid chart. Just herself, jessus.

SYSTEM: Unchida Ryo has not cheated nor exploited a bug. She is one of our star players who had received a boon. Lady of War is a boon granting increased Command stat and allowing for Company level Leadership tier immediately. Like all stars, she will be featured in our promotional material going forward.

JoMax: Holy shit dude. Go find her, maybe she can give you some loot or a cool bonus?

Brolo: Maybe, I don't think the Boons work that way. There's only five, I guess six now, people with special bonuses like that. Might as well try I guess.

'Cheat' Overload 2
Ryo took a long shower on Monday morning. Her vacation was so much fun! But now she had to go back to work.

When she didn't score well on her exams to get into college, she was disappointed. But she looked for what jobs she could take. She wasn't strong or particularly creative. She had never thought of herself as the sort of beautiful girl who could just go out and find a wealthy husband to take care of her.

Working as a legal secretary in a courthouse seemed exciting at first. It ended up being very dull. She took a four week class in using a special keyboard for transcribing all official conversations in the courtroom.

Maybe her MMO play style was a reaction to full days of extremely detailed and tedious work. Ryo couldn't let my attention wander at all during the work day. Her clothing was very narrowly restricted by the court as well, and she was wearing a boring gray dress as she walked out the door. At least they insisted on flats instead of making her wear high heels.

Ryo stayed casually interested in the cases around the courthouse, it kept her from getting completely bored. Mostly she worked civil cases but she had worked a few white collar crime cases. Those were the worst with all of the fancy jargon being tossed around. She had to study with a dictionary before working a case like that.

SGM WILLIAMS: I have some questions about the Boon you granted recently. The Lord/Lady of War boon was reserved in case we gain a new VVIP who is interested in the Ruler path. GM BLACKSKY, GM WEIRDWAY come in here.

GM BLACKSKY: Everything has been too serious with this game. There's no memes out there for Hero, Leader, Ruler. WEIRDWAY and I decided we should find a bad player and grant them this boon and watch them still fall on their face. Ryo has been the star of a couple funny memes on our internal subreddit so far.

SGM WILLIAMS: Give me their streamer profile. At least if they have a good follower base we can make something of this.

GM WEIRDWAY: They've never streamed before.

SGM WILLIAMS: Are they big on Instagram or something?

GM WEIRDWAY: No. They linked their social media accounts, and they have only spambots as followers.

SGM WILLIAMS: OK, I'm revoking your cheat authority. This is not good. We have an uncontrolled player, with no incentive to cooperate with us. You two, go cover Reports for a few weeks. You can deal with some abusive players, and think about your completely stupid actions.

GM BLACKSKY: You could just take away the boon from Ryo?

SGM WILLIAMS: No. We are still in a critical period. We are getting a lot of new players every day, and a negative story could really impact us. We need to market this as a lottery. Uchida Ryo won a game-wide lottery to receive the special boon. And I'm hiring one of the best Streamer consultants to get Ryo launched in a big way.

~

Tano Nori was used to working with mid to large streamers to help boost them to another level. She still Chat streamed two days a week and took questions from people about the streaming business. She had worked with guys, but found that side of the business was often very different than female streamers.

The hot new VRMMO was offering to pay her a nice consulting fee to train a brand new streamer. Just an ordinary player who had won a lottery and gained a large "Boon" in the game. She was going to be promoted as one of the major faces of the game, and they didn't even have her real face yet.

The girl's social media had no profile pictures, and Nori was terrified they might even be dealing with an ugly girl, or even worse, a dude. If it's a girl, It's ok, she decided, she needed a challenge.

TO: Jensen Williams
Subject: Contract Agreement

Good morning,

It's morning here in Tokyo at least. As agreed I will make contact with Uchida Ryo later this morning. I will set up a time to meet in person, today if possible. If I can't get in contact with her, I do want to do some investigation and look for a picture at least, so I can start planning her streaming strategies.

If this is actually a dude using a pseduonym, I'm going to have to pass, but other than that I'm on board for taking a New streamer to stardom.

What is the payment schedule? I can get on WhatsApp later if you would prefer not to share over email.

Looking forward to working with you.

--

Nori first tried to make contact with Ryo in the game. She had to set up an account with Mr. William's company, she had never played any of their games. They had been more focused on strategy gaming before, which most of her clients didn't play on stream.

After getting an account and downloading the game, she clicked on the link in one of the emails she had received from the company. It tied her game account to her consulting contract, and gave her some additional privileges in the game. In particular, Ryo was already added to her friends list.

The girl was offline, she'd not logged in today at all.

It was time to do some searching online.

Eventually she found something. The easiest way to find someone who doesn't want their face on socials, is through a friend or coworker accidentally setting a post to public.

She found a picture with a group of ladies at a restaurant. It was a social gathering of coworkers. There were multiple pictures, and the algorithm identified Ryo for her.

The girl had potential. She was still wearing drab work clothes, but even still she wasn't overweight or ugly or anything like that, just kinda plain, but that should be fixable. If Ryo was willing to put in the effort. She easily found out what Ryo worked as well.

She spent way too much time reading about the courthouse and procedures there. Then she had an idea.

~

Ryo had a half hour lunch and she was moving quickly to the ramen shop when she was interrupted.

"Excuse me, Ms. Uchida?"

Holy crap, this superstar model was trying to talk to her? Ryo flushed. "Uhh, can we walk and talk. I only have a half hour lunch."

"Sure, let's walk-- and talk. I'm Tano Nori."

"I think I remember -- you were a big streamer right?" Ryo said. This was crazy. Why was this famous person here talking to her.

"Used to. Now I consult with streamers."

There was a big crowd and a lot of noise, so the next time they could talk was as they sat down with their ramen.

"Virtual Strategies Interactive has hired me," Tano Nori continued.

Ryo was about to start eating, and then stopped. "Huh, what's that?"

"The big VSI logo on Hero, Leader, Ruler, that's them. Getting a big advantage in game, like you have, it has a cost. There's some additional terms and conditions you signed."

"Oh huh, I thought there were a lot of annoying pages to scroll through," she said. "What cost?"

"VSI expects you to promote their game, to be part of promotional materials, and in fact to stream the game at least a couple days per week."

"I gotta work Monday through Saturday. I don't game much during the week, just a little bit of goofing off in game, and then I eat and go to bed." Ryo said.

This Nori was getting flustered, she thought. Why?

"There are millions who would love to be able to stream and would die if they could have me as their consultant helping them make it big. And also, VSI has budgeted enough money to pay you for your streams. For the next six months, they will pay a salary if you stream five days a week. Enough for you to quit your job and go full time."

"Money? They don't pay me much here?" They would pay her for streaming. She wasn't a professional gamer or streamer. Why? Why Not. That would be pretty cool.

"I want to at least finish out my shift today," she said, getting afraid for a moment. What if this was an elaborate joke. Some TV special where a player gets all the things they ever wanted and then boom it's all just fake. And she didn't want to screw over the judge and the court. At least for today.

"Here's an address, meet me there after you get out of work. Don't worry, it's just a restaurant."

"Ok. Nice to meet you, Ms. Tano."

~~

This girl was kinda clueless. So clueless she didn't even go through the extremely excited phase. All her dreams are coming true and she's still stuck in neutral.

Nori had to laugh. She went back to her apartment and spent a couple of hours playing the new MMO, and then taking notes on how to stream this new game.

Her girl would have to buy a new Streamer-class VR setup. Then watchers would be able to see her move around in the game through their own VR headsets. Some fans still used a 2d video projection of the streamer, but the 3d immersion was more and more the popular way to experience your favorite streamer.

Mr. Williams had provided a lot of funds to get Ms. Uchida set up. They would need to go on a shopping spree tomorrow. Ryo needed clothes, makeup, everything really. She was banning the color gray from the girl's life.

She took some more notes, and wrote down her impressions of the girl. She wouldn't take on any new clients right now. Starting a streamer from scratch was a much more time intensive task.

Mr. Williams had sent over a couple of 3d recordings of Ms. Uchida's gameplay.

She quickly watched a few minutes of the first recording. This squad based gaming was very different for streaming. Followers would want to relate to her squad as well, and Ms. Uchida already was a natural at that. She interacted with her NPC squad like they were real people, and the NPCs in this game had real personalities.

Maybe the company could tweak any new squad mates Ryo received to make them even more perfect for a streamer to bounce off of.

Her girl was clueless, but not a giggly kind of clueless. More like a surprisingly mild-mannered clueless drone. Most people would call that a bad combo for streaming, but the girl herself could be a sort of contrast. She's the straight girl reflecting off the game itself, as she wipes time after time.

Still, Ms. Uchida needs some texture to her personality, some flair. Something that captures a certain type of audience.

She had to go meet the girl at dinner, and start hashing out these discussions.

~

The court actually understood. It was a big disruption for Ryo to leave, but they understood. She would pay a penalty for not giving notice, but she was fine with that.

After the long chat with Ms. Uchida at dinner, she had gone home and slept a full eight hours. She tried to dress nicely for her morning meeting with Ms. Tano, but she would still be the bland one in comparison to her star.

The day was a endless barrage of Ms. Tano talking, and Ryo responding with "Wha" or "Huh."

"You do have a bit of a paleness to you. What about this?"

Makeup, clothes, a manicure and pedicure, shoes. Decorations for her house, even cleaning supplies. The best part of the day was picking out her Streamer VR equipment. This was pretty awesome. Even if she wasn't streaming, she would have so much better fidelity with the new unit she picked out.

Reluctantly, she guided Ms. Tano backed to her apartment, where the fashion purchases were carefully put away, and then Ms. Tano helped her clean up her apartment even more. She thought she did a good job normally. It was a deep clean of the room where she would be streaming, which was also her bedroom.

"If you can make your stream successful enough, even after the Company's sponsorship ends, you can get a new apartment with an extra room just for your streaming. That will really help. For now you really need to keep your room extremely clean. Fans don't like a fake 3d room, you can get away with it sometimes, but during Just Chatting segments they really want to be there with you in your actual place. So keep everything immaculate and replace your decorations over time.

Maybe even get a cat, if you can find an apartment that allows pets. It's something of a secret boost to your popularity if you have a cute cat."

Nori kept Ryo's decorations pretty simple. Some traditional Japanese artwork, candles, a few new books for her bookshelf and a couple of music posters. Ryo didn't know much of anything about music. It was nice to listen to sometimes, she guessed. She liked the music in many of the video games she had played.

"I'll give you a pep talk for your first stream, and then I will send you a review of your first try on WhatsApp tonight. don't worry, the first time is always awkward."

~

She had spent a bit too much time tweaking the settings on her VR gear, but finally she connected to the VR headset with streaming mode active.

GM BLACKSKY had sent her some advice, recommending she quest with Gamma squad to build up their levels before trying the Company level raid again.

She could do the questline with her squad pretty easily, and focus on streaming and introduce her squad to her fans. If anyone bothered to show up on her stream.

She plowed through about six quests, waiting to get her first viewer. Jodi and Keith were a good Archer / warrior team, and she kept Kevin back for the first part of every fight and then sent him to join the attack and finish things off. This helped prevent him from constantly dying.

The quests got a bit tougher, her heal was on a long cooldown as a red mage, and she had to be careful not to attack two groups of enemies at once. She almost missed it when the first viewer signed on.

JoshJosh has joined the stream.

"Hi Josh. Uh, maybe I'll do some platoon level stuff after this quest."

JOSH: You already have a platoon? That's crazy. Let's see it.

Crap, she just realized she was supposed to update her in-game equipment to the new look Ms. Tano had picked out for her.

"One second, I need to update my aesthetic settings."

Viewers would have seen the 3D view of her character and squad replaced with a 2D display of settings. Regardless of her gear, she could wear cosmetic outfits that affected what she looked like. She equipped the virtual outfit Ms. Tano had designed.

"Ok, I'm back."

Josh didn't say much as she went and found the first Platoon level event that she had been stuck on before receiving the 'cheat'.

"I guess this will be a bit easy since I've leveled up. Maybe I should switch to Beta platoon."

JOSH: Wait, are you Company level already? Holy shit. Damn

SVBurger has joined the stream.

She decided to replace the text messages when someone joined the stream with just a little ding and a viewer count in the top right of her screen. She swapped in Beta platoon, and joined 1st squad.

SVBurger: I want to know how you got that platoon. That's one of the ones that a secret unlock. One of the dev diaries talks about it. Just a squad of these ladies is a Mythic Rare from level 50 raids.

"I have received a boon from the game. I got picked by a lottery to receive Lady of War. So I have Company level leadership unlocked, and I received a squad and two more platoons to complete my company. But I can't defeat the Company Level content yet, so I was advised to get my levels up on smaller stuff first."

JOSH: I don't know man. You might just be a hacker.

"Watch and find out I guess."

Somehow, the Monk raid event was harder this time with the Beta platoon. She did win it, but it was rough. Only had the Black mage girls left at the end.

There were 3 more viewers now.

APPLEAPRIL: You made it. Phew.
JOSH: She doesn't know how to play Amazonians.
BOBCO: Keep them active. It's more fun to watch you with these ladies than the Gamma squad crew.

"Should I run this event again, or look for the next Platoon level raid?"

BOBCO: You could do the Tombs, wait no, that's boring to watch.
APPLEAPRIL: The Trolls, yeah, do that one.

The stream surged to 15 viewers as dozens of trolls in game obliterated my all girl team. Kinda funny.

JOHNCSMITH: You do realize these Trolls are immune to Frost and Destruction magic, right? Not the best platoon for this content. And it's level 25. And yeah, why?

The streamers continued to lead Ryo to different events and raids where she wiped even more rapidly. Every time she switched away from Beta platoon, there was a wave of angry chatters so she just rolled with the Amazonians.

Eventually Ryo had no money to repair even crappy gear, so she went back and did some quests with Amazonian squad 1.

It had only been 3 hours. Streamers did this for six, eight, even ten hours? Ryo was so exhausted.

She didn't chat as much the last hour and a half, even wiped twice on the stupid questlines. The Amazonians may be a cool concept but they seemed to just suck in the game.

When Ryo finally logged off a bit earlier than planned, she didn't even think about needing to stream tomorrow.

<> * <> * <> * +~

Mur (or Gloriamur for long) trudged through the swampy zone that was home to level 10-15 teams of adventurers. The best weapon he had was a mark 2 broadsword, because he had been part of Invincible Heroes from the beginning, and never bothered to use non-Guild funded weapons. Those were all gone, so he used the last weapon he got before switching his compensation plan to Guild tokens.

The Guild took in all of the loot he collected, sold it on the public markets and provided him with Guild Reward Tokens, which were worthless in the event of not being part of the guild. It was a risky plan, but Guilds like Mur's old Invincible Heroes provided incredible benefits in the form of better equipment, and better storyline missions.

The whole guild combined in different roles and pieces to participate in War Story Missions. And specific units, like the 3rd Recon Platoon he had been a part of, participated in Unit Story Missions often 2 or 3 times a week.

And whenever he had time to spare, he would join in Targets of Opportunity, Story Mssions that would pop up and were size-flexible to include whomever was available.

For Invincible Heroes, the Front-Line fighters were the most desirable posting, and most prestigious, earned for service in other roles.

Mur had thought he was within a few months of earning a Mainline posting. He served in a still decent role, as Recon Soldier. There were Logistics roles, and Militant Ranger roles, as well as the traditional trainee, acolyte, etc roles for the lower levels.

The game didn't provide any magical classes or abilities instead emphasizing Modern guns and Medieval swords/hammers/axes in their army setups. They used medics, not healer mages. There were a variety of specialty tracks, for those who didn't or couldn't pursue a mainline fighter role, like Mur had been chasing.

The Lemon Law proved that because Mur had been kicked out a guild, any other guild would assume something was wrong with him.

The best thing Mur knew to do with the rest of his time in the game, was rebuild his equipment, by hunting much lower enemies by himself, and gradually refine a solo style. He knew he would never be able to fight at level enemies, or get involved in story missions again.

NPC guilds were filled with people who didn't know how to work together, or didn't have the capacity to be a strong combatant or helpful auxilliary. What Guild would want to kick out a useful member?

He didn't intend to work with any of the members of this putative Human Townspoeple 17 guild.

There were other games, where Soloing was possible and prosperous, but Mur loved this one, and the cooperation and camaraderie of his ex-Guild.

He killed another frognurt with his tier 2 broadsword. 22 frognurt corpses gives you one Swamp merit. 150 swamp merits gives you a roll on an equipment chart, which includes, possibly a decent Tier 3 weapon. His level helped him do better, but his SMG was worthless even against level 12 frognurts. The broadsword was good enough to handle them, but not much better.

Good Equipment was made by crafting specialists, acceptable equipment could be found by a lot of grinding. There was a public market in loot and therefore a public market in acceptable equipment, but good crafters needed extensive time and resources, they therefore belonged to the guilds, rather than being market freelancers.

He had to chase the frognurts all over the Swamp zone, because he could easily deplete populations with his frognurt killing rate.

30 swamp merits and 11 more frognurt corpses in, and a Guild team confronted him.

"Clear the Area! The Awesome Mountees are conducting trainee operations in the area. Our Guild charter authorizes wiping any unguilded mooches from the area."

Mur had to leave for a few hours. He researched his map of zones by level while he waited for the Guild op to disperse.

The next day he ran into a level 10 unguilded. He was a magical ranger trainee. Mur knew because the unguilded told him.

With Rookie equipment, Ialophos was sure to die if he faced any of the swamp's mobs.

"I thought I'd check out what mobs there are to fight here. Elvenhome is full of boring fights. I can kill them all in two shots, or one mystic shot."

"You need guild equipment to make it here. Or you need to get all the upgrade grinds in Elvenhome before coming here, and then be very careful."

"Why do you think that, I mean, maybe it will be hard, but I'm level 10, ready for the zone, sergeant!"

"I'm not a sergeant. I'll tell you what, what level do you see me as?" Mur asked the Elf.

"??? way above me."

Mur fought another frognurt, using all of his hard-won grace, manuevering, strength and courage. He killed the frognurt quickly but didn't insta-kill.

"I guess you're level 21?" Ialophos said.

"You're off by 10. I'm level 31, but my gear is only Tier 2, instead of tier 5-6-7, like it was. I was kicked out of my guild, and now I'm hunting 18 levels down and not being as fast as a should. You'd be hunting 3 levels up, and with Rookie equipment."

"Oh. So I guess I need to sign up with a guild?"

Mur laughed. "Kid, how much do you know about this place?"

"Swamplands? I know it's the 1st zone after home for Elves, and Humans too I guess?"

"First zone for Elves and Lizardkin. I just came here because my calculations showed it was the least used by Guild training teams. But by here, I mean here."

"Oh, well I heard there was some big wars, and that sounded cool."

"Did you get Foreign Legion papers?" Mur said.

"Uh, what's that?"

"Someone from our land likes you enough to give you a commission to join their guild here, become part of their army. Often with a specialty role, sometimes, as with me, with a long-term goal authorization of front-line soldier."

"Oh..."

Mur felt sorry for the kid, completely unaware of the Guild-centric style of his homeland.

"Comeon, I'll show you how to milk the Elven king for all his rewards."

"Really?"

Characterization!
Camaraderie + 1 (13)
Pluck + 1 (18)

Mur left his swamp merits in limbo, and his frognurt corpses in item exile, the place where you put things you might never want to see again. Weird quest chains with their weird items, off to item exile.

The Elven homeland was quite picturesque, if you hadn't already grown jaded by years of over-exposure, like Mur had in his old games. Mur knew about the Elven homeland noob-quests and rewards from his time before he came to this game. He studied the Prima guide and all the supplemantal books and webpages before he got his Foreign Legion letter.

It was 6 months of dying from Elf overexposure before he moved over. Being a human soldier was a refreshing contrast, once he had gotten here.

Sure, nominally, it was the sort of thing he wouldn't be caught dead doing before, but Mur kinda enjoyed teaching Ialophos the basics of squeezing out maximum rewards, while also teaching him grace and manuever. It wasn't neccesary against these rookie foes, but it did lead to interesting and epic death blow combos with the Bow + Spell style Ialo had.

The bow had to be a special rarer type of bow: a spell bow or magic bow, so that his magic locus could be the bow while also using it as a weapon to fire arrows.

The final Elven home challenge noob-quest was for a spell bow or compound bow depending on role choice. The noob-quest had phasing which meant Mur couldn't accompany Ialo for this one.

Ialo had to fight a boss which was quite tough by Rookie standards. He had to work his way through waves of mobs in the forest until he reached a temple at the peak of a forested hill area. Fighting through several different kinds of lieutenants, he reached the Dark Druid herself, and battled his way to victory.

Wtih all the minor awards, resources, and especially training in grace and manuever, Ialo defeated the whole challenge in 25 minutes, surprising even Mur.

Ialo got his spell bow, and a Tier 1 woodsman armor. He still would need a Tier one melee weapon soon enough, but the two of them together could begin to take on the Swamplands.

Realization!
Sense +1 (10)

Mur wrested with the chasm of boredom through all of this, but didn't show it. By comparison, the Swamplands actually required him to use his battle skills. With Ialo's bow and his melee prowess, they became 3 to 4 times more effective at clearing out frognurts.

Ialo had his first wipe when an especially large cluster of frognurts swarmed them, and Mur couldn't do anything to direct their attention. He wasn't especially good at front line combat, because he hadn't earned that role in Invincible Heroes yet.

A role change would require Mur to level up:

LEVEL 31 PROGRESS
[******* ] : 23.3%

A frognurt was about 0.01% of a level.

The wipe was just a temporary setback, but their clear rate was a bigger one. They had to move on to other stuff in the swamp, which meant Mur's first wipe in the zone, as he took on too many Big Buggers with his chintzy chainmail armor.

A wipe here, a wipe there, but their broader hunting pattern meant level 17 for Ialo, and a merit turn in.

Zone Merit rewards could be sold at the public market or traded to other players directly.

Mur waited as Ialo rolled on a Merit item reward. Tier 3 Massive Plate Armor. Usable only by Front-Line Soldier or Guardian roles. It was primarily a Guardian role as they had reductions to Massive Armor penalty.

So it was fortuitous to see a Lizardkin in Rookie tier Massive Plate Armor, being confused.

Mur had a conversation first.

"Are you part of a guild?"

"No. I wanted a Foreign Legion invite, but I never got one. I was going to look for a guild, but I figured I'd better get to level 10 and get out of the Newb-zone. Are you guys part of a guild?"

"We're guildless. Ialo didn't really know he needed a guild, and I got kicked out of mine."

"Oh, well I have to go find some guild recruiters. Is there some kind of channel for Guild recruiters?"

"Invite-only, supposedly. I've heard if you are a huge deal in your guild, and they can you, you can connect with some Guild Headhunters. I'm hearing its level 80 demis and up. And commanders."

"Oh, well I can't just go around and find a bunch of recruiters here?" the Lizardkin aka Odeimos, asked.

"Nope. Unless you have a foreign legion letter, you won't get in a guild as a low-level."

"Are you guys just teaming up, can I join your group, at least?"

"You've got to go through the gauntlet, just like Ialo did. In order to have the equipment you need, you'll have to complete all the extra challenge quests, you probably don't even have many of them discovered. Ialo was a ranger in a ranger friendly zone, you're a guardian-trainee in a zone more specced for berserker type equipment."

"How do we get him the right equipment?" Ialo asked.

"It's going to suck, but Odeimos, you need to run the whole Dwarf holdings intro zone with us, including the challenge quests," Mur said.

"Yuck, what if I just go fight some guys here?" Odeimos said.

Ialo responded first, "You'll die. I've wipes four times, with Mur's help. We have some Tier 3 Massive Plate, but you need to get to level 15 first. Mur's a level 31 recon. I'm a level 17 magic ranger".

"Hmm. I guess I can do that. How are you going to run it with me, if you're so high level?"

"The Dwarflands doesn't have any phasing, so we can run it together, and help out. Plus there is the epic Dark Dwarf incursion challenge, which can result in a Tier 2 Massive Armor right out of the rookie zone."

From the Swamplands, they had to pass through the Iron Mountain Pass, a level 15-20 zone, staying on the mountain road, and tag teaming the few mobs they did encounter. Mur had to use up the last of his coin on buying a few grenades to add to their punch against level 15 mobs.

From there it was on to the Highlands, the level 10-15 junction zone connecting to the Dwarflands, and Frostlands, which were the Giants starting zone.

As Highlands were a favored guild training zone, they stayed away from groups of guilders, skirting around the edges of the zone until they reached the threshold of the rookie zone, where guild powers could not be used, nor abused on the newbies therein.

The trek into the Dwarflands Rookie zone starting spot was quick, as the rookie zones were smaller than all the others.

The beginning of the noob-quest chain was a solid stone dinning room table in the Dwarfking's Palace. The Dwarfking's adjutant was sitting at the far end.

Odeimos sat down in the opposite chair.

"Well, I was to tell you you about the current sit'ation with them Dark Dwarves and the Trolls coming out of the Deep roads? But first, be seated. This'on will take a while."

Odeimos looked around for another chair.

"All of you, please sit, if'n you would."

Mur shrugged, he'd never played Dwarflands, but the Prima guide never mentioned this. He sat down next to Odeimos, and Iola followed, sitting next to them.

"We welcome you, travelers, to the Dwarven Highlands, home to the Highland Kingdom, ruled by our illustrious and wise Dwarfking. His axe blade is sharp, and his shield protects the Dwarven and free folk of these lands from all threats foreign and domestic."

This didn't match what Mur remembered of the guide. Maybe it had changed since release.

The adjutant twisted a mechanical lever, which spun a gear which released a projection of the Dwarflands zone.

"My stonesense finds something different in you three. An Ambassador from lands far perhaps?"

Mur blinked, and pondered whether something had broken in the dialogue.

"We are just guildless, milord Dwarf. Never been an ambassador, I don't think any of us has, though I just met Gloriamur and Odeimos today," Ialo said.

"Hmm," the adjutant npc pondered. Light flared over the three of them, smoke filled the room.

REALM PORTAL CHARGING. PREPARE YOURSELF.

He was being evicted! Mur realized with a groan. Since when did the Invincible Heroes have that much power. What had he done! He didn't even get an appeal.

All around him was only the white fog of a realm transfer.

[ENTERING FOREST GROVE - PALACE OF THE DEDICATED PRINCE]

Gloriamur would have to find another realm to pursue, he was done with Forest Grove, both literally and metaphorically.

He respawned in a hidden corner of the Throne Room he'd built when he lead one of the Fifty Kingdoms of Glory. He noticed a massive statue of his character, in the center of the Throne room. The status displayed him swinging the true-mythril Truth-revealer longsword, with Elven woven chainmail in silver and blue highlights, with his pixie companion Quilisiel hovering overhead. The pixie was suspended from the ceiling so that it rested where it usually had during his later adventuring days. Even the steps leading up from the hidden creche were plated in mythril.

He looked up his profile: Gloriamur Dauntless, fourth of his name, the Dedicated Prince, bearer of the 5th piece of the Ring of the Stars, Risen, having passed through death back into life through the Elven door. Breaker of the gates of Armordin.

He, having been inside his own hidden creche, was shocked to see two others there also.

Upon inspection, Gloriamur saw that the first one's title read: Ialophos Steelheart, Ranger-Champion, keeper of the 7th fragment of the Wheel of Nature's Balance, envoy accompanying the Dedicated Prince.

The second one's title card read: Odeimos ???, Unknown Guardsman, envoy accompanying the Dedicated Prince.

"What the heck?" said Ialophos. "Where am I?"

"The Dedicated Prince's secret creche," Gloriamur said.

"What realm is this," asked Odeimos. "And why #$#@@$, did I get realm kicked?"

"Come on, we are better off here than in public," Gloriamur said, walking out of the corner towards the center of the Throne Room.

"You have to tell us later, what's going on," Ialophos said.

"Don't know myself, I left this place when I joined the Invincible Heroes," he said.

It was early morning in local realm time.

There were 3 people milling around the site of his statue. One of them was kneeling. For the love of Elves, this was ridiculous. People hadn't treated him like this when he was still playing Forest Grove.

The woman who was kneeling before his statue looked High Elven, but she was equipped in a style more similar to Gloriamur himself, focusing on swords and armor instead of the leather armor, bows and staves that were omni-present in the game.

Forest Grove tended to be heavy on rangers, and heavy on druidic mage types. Gloriamur had been told many times that focusing on swords was foolish, but he went ahead anyway. Maybe it was slower going at first, but it was his personal style.

He looked at the high elf's profile: Aesrillosuir Gladeheart, Sergeant - Dauntless 3rd Heroic Command Unit, bearer of the third shard of the broken blade Onimthus.

The other two milling around were low level earth and storm druids, respectively.

"Just go with the flow," Gloriamur privately messaged Ialophos and Odeimos. "Follow behind me and i'll ask some questions about what's going on here."

Aesrillosuir was just standing up as Gloriamur approached.

He wasn't sure what he expected, but it wasn't for the Legionnaire to just start walking away. Maybe she didn't see him?

Should he chase her, or merely proceed to his ready room. No chasing, he decided. he simply took his time, and exited the throne room.

Eerily, he passed others in the hall, and no one noticed or mentioned anything. Sure, he had been one of the few players who actually got to experience the Sovereignty system in game, and command groups of NPCs and players, but still he had never been the biggest or the best sovereign in game. He was a minor influencer at most.

After a few failed attempts remembering how, he finally accessed his Sovereign realm inventory, and gained his ready room key. This room was the nerve center where he had relaxed while reviewing the situation with his armies, and whether he needed or desired to personally go forth and do some sword fighting of his own.

The key turned after a longer delay than he remembered, and then the ready room was as it was before. His piece of the Ring of the stars displayed in an ornate jewel-case. His pixie friend in suspended animation, as she had requested before he left.

A collection of swords that were no longer combat-relevant but were sentimental to him. Two sets of armor, for the same reason. Ialophos and Odeimos were able to enter the ready room since they were in his party.

He sat down behind his desk made of true glass and took the data pad that was resting on it.

"Let me check my messages real quick," he said to the other two.

And on and on they went. Perhaps, if he cared, he would pick the Grand Melee tournament.

"You've been here before Ialophos?" Gloriamur asked.

"Level 70, ranger-champion when I left. Never been to the Dauntless region. But wait, you're the Dauntless Prince? I thought that was a NPC? How come you have all this, all around you?"

"When I started in this realm, everyone was becoming knights and the counts and dukes. I mean not everyone, some people preferred to spend their time training their spirit friends and familiars. I guess a few more dropped out over time, but I wouldn't call me especially high up there.

"I'm fairly skilled in surviving in sticky situations, so the Dauntless name kinda stuck. There were fifty kingdoms with princes as leveled up as I was. Level 230."

"The Fifty Kingdoms of Glory?" Ialophos laughed, "I've been walking around with a guildless Mur, and he turns out to be that Gloriamur. There's so many copycats and lookalikes of you in Forest Grove. That's why everyone ignores you."

"OK, but why did we all end up here? I'm level 1 now. But I have this cool mystery aspect, like I'm some kind of long lost cousin of the Dauntless Prince."

Gloriamur laughed, "I would walk with you through the early levels here, but the phasing is--- a lot. Every story event in the first zone phases. Let me get through these messages, and see if there is anything showing our Realmshift. Ialophos, I can summon some food or other fun things if you want, or you can go quest also."

"I'll go quest, and work my way towards the Dauntless area."

Soon two spheres of translocation took both of Gloriamur's companions away to their respective questing areas.

He had always been impressed with deserts in Forest Grove. At the very bottom of his actions menu was a food menu. It was an NPC who served him the delicious cake, so he didn't have to worry about a hubbub from the Ready Room being open for the first time in over a year.

Time to go through those messages. First the System ones, and then the Important ones.

On and on they went, from oldest to newest. He just read the subject line of most of them.

ooo==

Meanwhile, Ialophos had gone back to his last questing zone, and done what you usually do after long time away, which is spend some time getting his wits about him and following up on old quests. Identifying his abilities and their characteristics again. Find out what he had been doing before.

A few people took one look at him, and then a second look while walking by. The fact that his title said Envoy accompanying the Dauntless Prince, was no doubt the cause of it. How did he get such a title, they may have wondered.

Ialophos simply moved on. He had joined the realm some time after Gloriamur joined, and the opportunities for extraordinary achievement were much reduced by all the competition and popularity that realm began to have. He had done well to be ranger champion.

His task was to obtain another piece of the Wheel of Nature's balance in the tomb of lost revelers. The undead were numerous, and his ammo was depleted. He bought what he could, but the market had shifted since he'd left for another realm, before going to Guildlands.

Now he remembered. This was where he had been stuck. So many fails in a row meant his resources were depleted.

Titles often conferred benefits, especially those gained by controlling part of a broken artifact. It was the gimmick of Forest Grove that everyone had a piece of some broken ancient and powerful artifact. The question was what piece, and how powerful was the artifact it came from.

If even Gloriamur only had a piece of an artifact, than that aspect filled the entire realm. The ring of the stars made whole, would be ridiculously powerful. Celestial energies in a near infinite extent.

Ialophos' equipment was nothing special amongst his fellow 70th circlers. Not better, and not worse.

A ranger-champion was better at taking down individual strong foes from range, not so good at handling wave after wave of unending undead.

Being an envoy of the Dauntless seemed to give him the boost he needed, even when he ran out of ammo and had to use his bo staff. He risked his own quest progress to save a surrounded High Elven bladeswoman.

Though they each had to fulfill the quest separately, they were able to help each other out when it got hairy. The piece of the Wheel was in the hands of an Undead Sorcerer who was once a musician.

Ialophos first helped the blade-wielding woman to defeat him for her quest, and then she helped for his quest.

With the piece recovered, they were both able to go back to the local grove and entreat the winds to reveal more about where the remaining pieces were. There was one lost in an old battleground in the fight against the undead, and another in the cloudlands above the zone he was in.

Ialophos finally realized it was the same woman fighting alongside him as who had been at Gloriamur's palace. It was Aesrillosuir Gladeheart again.

They had decided to go to the Cloudlands.

"How did you get that title? I've never heard of a Dauntless envoy before. At least not one of us. Maybe there's an NPC envoy?" Aesrillosuir asked.

"You wouldn't believe me if I told you," he said.

"That crazy? System bug crazy?"

"Maybe," he admitted, "but not intentionally."

"You'll be banned. Hmm, now I wonder, should I stick around, and get banned with you, or not stick around and not figure out what is going on with that title? You're a ranger-champion, wielding a Bo-staff with 60k crit damage, criting, what, 22% chance? That's not normal with your pedestrian shard and gear. Forgive me, but it's gotta be that title."

"You might be right," he said. "So the true story is I just met Gloriamur a few weeks ago."

"Bullshit. You met a fake. He isn't around here anymore, except in the story sense. His Kingdom is still active, but the prince himself isn't there. I'm sorry, but I've been fooled by one to many cons to buy it. I'm selling your stock."

"He's not in Forest Grove anymore, at least he wasn't. I met him in Guildlands. He was a Recon soldier for a powerful Guild there, until their guild decided to kick him out. I was lost and way out of my element in Guildlands. It's a harsh world compared to here. No nice quests and storylines. Not unless you're part of a guild. He went by just Mur there. He helped me go back and optimize the starting zone and get every reward out of it, so I could take on the next zone. And we were helping another person in the Highlands there, when suddenly my view just was white, wispy smoky white. And all three of us were realmshift to Forest Grove. Into a hidden creche beneath the throne room.

"We saw you there, at his statue, but you looked right past us and left as we climbed up out of the creche."

"You were the creepers approaching me, with that fake Gloriamur costume? Creep! Tell me why I shouldn't report you right now."

Ialophos shrugged, "I'm not lying. Report me if you want, but I'm somehow part of Mur's group, even though I didn't really know who he was."

She really did hit the report button, and filed one.

[REPORT ACTION: SHIFTING INVOLVED PARTIES TO THE AUTHORIZED REVIEWER]

The courtroom which Ialophos showed up in was fancy. the chairs removed except for the front row for the concerned parties' and the Judge's seat, of course.

"Ranger-Champion, Sergeant Gladeheart. I know of you Aesrillosuir, but I have not heard of you Ialophos. What cause do you have to report, Sergeant?"

"Falsely claiming closeness to the Dauntless Prince, and stalking. He followed me from the Palace shrine, all the way to the Tomb of the Last Revelers."

"Ahem, excuse me, Sergeant, it appears. Hmm, well this is odd. I've been preempted from my role," the Judge in black robes said.

"By who?" Aesrillosuir said plaintively.

"By the Dauntless Prince himself. We established procedures to identify the true Prince, and he just passed all of the tests. Thankfully that was established before he left. He never said where he was going, or whether he would come back."

The judge excused himself, shifting away, and Ialophos saw Gloriamur once more, in a new light. Wearing his formal attire, with his true-mithril blade attached to the sheath at his hip, the Prince in white seemed to be an entirely different person from Mur.

"My apologies, Sergeant, might you repeat the report given to Judge Eodasu?"

"Your highness, I apologize for bringing this before you, but I have been hounded by false claimants, and those who claim a false connection to your person. I believe that this Ranger-champion falsely claims to know you, and stalked me to your Palace room, and far across the realm into the Tomb of Revelers, for what scheme or reason I know not."

Ialophos saw the slight smile or smirk from the Prince, who turned to him.

"And your account of the events? Did you pursue the Sergeant in the Tomb of Revelers?"

'I was merely pursuing the pieces of the Wheel of Nature's balance. Following a task the local grove had asked me to pursue. Before that, I accompanied you from Guildlands to your Palace, and then to your ready room. I didn't intend to follow the Sergeant, it was just happenstance."

"Is that true?" the Sergeant asked.

"Yes, he was with me. It is not commonly known, but I left this realm for a mission of great importance in Guildlands. That mission failed due to treachery from the Guild I was in an alliance with. I tried to recover, but I was exiled from the realm by surprise. Ialophos and another person, Odeimos were also struggling due to the injustices of the Guild's control of those lands, I was assisting them in getting started in Guildlands when this all happened. It's all very unusual because this wasn't the last realm Ialophos has been to before Guildlands, and Odeimos has never been in this realm."

"This case is dismissed on the basis of harmless confusion and lack of knowledge on both sides. I apologize also, as I did not realize my image was being desecrated by such fakes and pretenders."

ooo

Gloriamur had spent all day going through his messages. He was exhausted when he finally found a System message that was clear enough to make sense. It was from Guildlands. Ialophos had gone to get some rest. Odeimos had not returned from questing yet.

"Message from Guildlands Realm: An Out of Bounds situation was detected. When you first arrived at Guildlands there was no diplomatic paperwork, but your status in Forest Grove requires such paperwork to be present in Guildlands. So you will be sent back, with authorization to re-enter as an Ambassador."

The other message was after: "Realm of the Forest Grove extends authorization of Ambassadorship and Amity for the following persons: Prince Gloriamur Dauntless, Ambassador to Guildlands. Ranger-Champion Ialophos Steelheart, Envoy to Guildlands, Forestwalker Odeimos Entwroten, Envoy to Guildlands."

Odeimos's title seemed to be wrong, but whatever.

The One Foe That Vampires Fear New
inspired by a recent Vampire campaign in Total War Warhammer series.

Eldon looked at the inn. He read the letter from their son. Declaring his independence. Claiming the ancient castle at the heart of their underworld his possession, and the villages near it as well.

They had trained Cole too well in the traditional arts. Now he had control of the vaults and the creatures of the castle.

The inn before him was barely standing. They had two dark knights loyal to their cause, and a mob of newly raised, as well as the oldest, crankiest skeleton, their butler.

Still he was tempted to storm the castle, and teach Cole the difference between youth and wisdom. Their son wanted to work together, now that he had taken almost everything from them.

"Honey, come inside!" Bea spoke to him from the doorway of the old inn.

"Alright," he said. "So its done?"

He preferred to stay away when Bea was siring a new female. She turned the whole act into an erotic activity.

He avoided the weak steps going up the stairs, hopping about like a madman, but he had already fallen through once before.

"Ermina is in the other room upstairs, recovering."

His starlight was more attractive than ever. They would find the mortal staff of the inn, and eat some food just for fun, but that could wait until later. She was serious though, as she reapplied her glamour, and returned to looking like a normal human. Beatrice could blend in and spy on the humans a lot better than he.

Laying in bed later, she made her plea, leave Cole alone, agree to this silly "alliance". There were other places they could look towards. Bea was practically giddy as she explained the human lands that lay to our west and north. I knew some of this, but we plotted and planned, and agreed on some things.

First, leave the human mages, and their settlements for later. Too risky, too much trouble.
Second, we don't need to trouble the orcs, nor the eastern druids.
And third, at all costs, leave the Dwarves alone.

The group of Mages to the southwest had a regular relationship, even alliance, with the Dwarves, so they were doubly safe from our fangs. There were ratmen in the mountains near the village. Disgusting things, without much blood. We planned to fight them first.

~

Freshly raised undead were poor soldiers against prepared positions, or strong fighters, or mages, or a lot of archers, or really any substantial force known.

An unprepared foe, on the other hand, could find quickly that they were overwhelmed. The dark knights hunted down the ranged ratmen, and charged menacingly at isolated foes, while the raised began to outflank the line of the rats.

Ermina took to the Winds of Death with great skill. The leader of the rats howled as her spell burned his soul, and Eldon rushed towards the rat king.

Bea repaired the necromantic workings of the undead, restoring their power were possible, and rebinding their muscles where needed.

Eldon commanded two of the zombies, and his butler to join him as he clashed with the rat lord, eventually skewering the vermin with his sword.

The rats scattered, and the Dark knights chased the ones they could pursue.

The reward for their troubles was another small village. Once human, the rats had overrun it.

~

The ratlings had nothing like a castle in their grubby hands, but in the end, they faced the greatest of their rat lords, and now they held a foothold in the mountains south of their son's lands, and east of the Mage lords.

Bea headed north, to begin raising a host of her own. Ermina stayed with him instead of following her sire, but he couldn't complain, given the new vampire's talent for magic.

He had plans for the battlefield. Their battle with the last rat lord satisfied Death. From the graves of the fallen came stranger and stronger creatures than zombies and skeletons.

Bats first, and then their strong cousins, Gargoyles. of flying death came. Much of the recent dark knights had fallen but he supplemented them with the newly devoted dark squires, and even raised up a unit of the mighty scythe wielders. For whatever reason, only those who were women in their former life could become the scythe wielders.

With a reinforced host. He moved north, bypassing the villages that were under their control, and heading for human lands in the northwest. Their nearest human neighbors knew vampires well, but once they pushed further inland, they would face those who had never seen undead.

~

Bats flew back and forth between her husband's army, and her own. They were nearly at the limit of their ability to control their hosts. She had spent too long finding the stranger fusions of beast and necromancy to prepare for their 'adventures'. Bears were caught and brought under their power, and spiders as well. She raised up four dark acolytes to form her own dark knights. And she had as many freshly raised as she could handle.

Eldon was already making a twisted trail through the human lands. But he had to stop, in the face of a strong human lord, so it was time for the two of them to bring forces together and defeat the lord of the human's eastern lands.

Albero was her newest childe. He was not gifted with magic, but by sword and sheer bloody and viciousness did he make her proud. Together, she and Albero arrived at a few of the human villages, leaving no doubt who was in charge at each of them. Eldon would not be happy about Albero.

~

Flying monsters, monsters on monstrous horses, dark mages and necromancers. And, of course, the countless undead surrounded the keep.

Count Vilhelm trusted his archers, and his catapults, but he did not know how to deal with the magical side of things.

His knights patrolled the inside of the walls, covering any unexpected entries, while the main bulk of his force stood right on top of the battlements to fight off the hordes, who bore ladders on their inhuman shoulders.

He waited in the keep. A few knights, and the last few catapults were here, to make the last stand.

Some were cut down by the archers, but not as many as he'd hoped. Some were cut down as they climbed onto the battlement, but soon the death lords had reached the walls and organized the undead, and then his soldiers were forced to either descend into the interior or try to hold off, and be squeezed together by the two-sided attack.

He was surprised when a knight interrupted his thoughts. "Lord, the bats! They are coming!"

Looking outside, he swore, "Don't you know a terrorgheist when you see one!"

Bats were just the beginning of their flying foes.

~

The distraction had worked perfectly. The enemy lord was dead, and the human soldiers panicked. Most were stuck on the wall to be run through by undead spears. They had lost a lot of raised during the setup time for this scheme, but the plan had succeeded.

"Where next, my lord?" Ermina asked.

Bea was excellent at all the talking parts. As their campaign progressed, the human lands proved surprisingly soft to their forces. But there was a need for more lords of their coalition. Teasingly they called their efforts the parents crusade.

Bea found vampire lords who had largely stuck with their old ways, and brought them out to feed. Ermina was my second in command, and Albero was Bea's, but we still often joined forces, and sent the other vampire lords to pursue our ever-expanding campaign elsewhere.

The biggest surprise was that the so-called Emperor was so weak. When they finally crossed the Imperial river into his personal lands, we found only a token force, but the Emperor's city would be no easy force to take.

With their other two lords off dealing with a rebellion in the first Human villages they'd taken. Eldon had to wait for Bea, so he caught up reading letters from their rebellious son.

With all the resources of their ancient home, their prodigal had struggled facing the northmen. He made some progress, but it was a slow affair. Perhaps those men were built of something sturdier than their recent foes, or maybe Cole wasn't as experienced as he let himself believe.

~

If the Emperor had any decent army shoring up the city's defenses, it would have been nearly impossible to take his capital. As it was, many undead had returned to the earth, and Albero nearly died. The Dark Knights managed to batter down the gates after a long protracted fight on the walls, and together with three dark mages, the knights cut their way to the citadel, and ended the Emperor's reign.

They had bypassed another group of the humans in the push west, and now pulled their other vampire lords away from the discontent villages to reap this last human force.

There was much to do in the capital, to make it a place they could call home. Both he and Bea would be occupied in the city for some time.

~

The village was destroyed and the risen all returned to mass graves which were set alight and still burning now. bodies were burned. When I had found the arrows and returned them to Bea, she knew exactly who we were facing.

"Elves, the blasted tree huggers!" Bea ranted.

And day by day, the outlying villages that had once belonged to the Emperor were razed by these elves.

Between ol' Lord Slade and I, we trapped a shockingly small force of the elves, and found that they were far greater fighters than the humans. I was almost brutalized by one of the female elven fighters, but Ermina rushed in, saving me.

She had survived a few melee fights, despite preferring magic, but this was her first true sword fight. Just a week ago, I had sired my first childe in ages. He was a good hand with shadows, a form of magic I knew little about, but Ansgar would be an excellent addition to our family.

Through messengers, Bea and I agreed to hunt down these Elves wherever they were hiding.

We went west into another mountain range, one Bea knew less about.

That took us to a new group of humans Bea didn't know so well.

With painted designs on their armor and shields, they held a mountain fortress that the treacherous group Elves had slipped past.

It was lucky that the horse loving humans were best suited to wide open lands, as we were able to use our numbers, and the terrogheists to overwhelm the fortress' defenders, and from this pass, the land opened into a wide vista full of the horse-lovers. We saw no sign of the Elves yet.

Bea continued to seek others to join our banners, sending messages to potential vampire lrods whenever she could. The uprisings in the east, where our journey had began, were frequent, and we were thankful when the disobedient child suppressed one of them.

There were dwarves around us in these mountains, we stayed far away, heeding the principles we had agreed on. We pursued the horse lords in the plains west of the mountains instead.

We soon found an ally in the mountains: A local vampire lord who had fought the horselings for a long time. He was trapped by the Horse lords, only able to range out from the mountain passes and occasionally battle with the humans.

I confess, our journey had been addicting. While we still looked after the Imperial capital and worked with our subordinates to develop it into a place for us, many of the lands we supposedly conquered were only loosely held. If we faced a strong coalition, or dwarves, we would probably center our defense around that capital and abandon the lands nearest to our son. But until then we continued our rampage, going still further east towards the coast.

Bea and I weren't much for water. We didn't know anything about fighting near the ocean or out to sea. Luckily, we hadn't been forced to fight near the coast yet.

After taking two human keeps and several villages, we finally saw where the Elves were settled. A vast forest that lies east of the Horse lords, and we encountered a small scout force of the elves. Based on how strong those few elves we faced had been, Bea and I promised not to step foot in that forest until all of our lords were gathered to strike together.

We dreaded facing every danger lurking in these woods.

Retired from the Clans of Old New
Inspired by a very tribal-flavored Barbarian class in an old mud I used to play. The class's main abilities were Roars, Dances and Berserks. They were also the only class that could not use magic or magical items at all.

The trio:
Brynfríður Haukvaldsdóttir (Bryn - Herbalist)
Emely Olafsdóttir (Emmi - Horse Raiser/Trainer)
Berghildur Fróðmarsdóttir (Bergi - Militia trainer/instructor)
~

Bryn carried the log carefully, making sure not to disrupt the mushrooms she had spotted growing on it. The base of the mushrooms were brown, but the caps were white. She had seen the mushrooms long ago, in the wilds around her clanhome.

The youth here in the Empire were bad at both war and practical skills. She forgave them for the former. The empire hadn't face a truly equal foe since the days of old. Though she had once been only despondent and angry about those final days, now many years later, she found the Final Days of the clans bittersweet. Oh, that they would have convinced the Menfolk to join them, instead of allowing them their suicidal last charge.

She could still hear the trumpets and the ancestral roars of each clan, as she and her fellow women of war lead away the youth of their people. Then came tragedies in quick succession, and their group with so many young, and women recently with child were decimated by constant fighting. They were a target for many who saw them as a food easily swallowed.

Those who remained when they arrived in the Empire's lands were less than a jarl's band.

Bergi was their leader, but both she and Emely had been forced to hone their arts of war as well. Bryn knew the Tiger's roar well, taught on her father's knee, but she had learned in those final days to manage her voice as keenly as any weapon.

The bandits were barely worthy to wield a wooden sword. She ignored their words. She had an instinctive knowledge of the Tiger Clan's roar, and used it to buy her enough time to put down the log with the growing mushrooms.

They still hadn't shaken off their fear by the time she took up the hammer from her belt clip. Nothing like the weapon she had used before, but it was more practical for her current life anyway.

She waited as they each shook off the effects of the roar one by one, but they were still stuttering and unable to resist.

"Now you will go ahead and turn yourself in to the constable. I will be following you," she said.

They all promised they would turn themselves in, calling her Elder, or Grandmother.

In these lands, few respected their elders. Each child whatever their station, seemed to only respect other youngsters that were renowned. Many were obsessed with the young prince's deeds, while Bryn and her war sisters had learned of the stories of their grandfathers and grandmothers from when they were very young.

Though many called her elder, she felt no loss of physical abilities in the decades since she had been here. She heard the stories of old, of those who lived hundreds of years and became forged in the crucible of battle, somehow becoming something more than the mortal humans around them. In every story, they faced endless battles and obstacles before they became more. Bryn never felt like there was a certain moment when she was aware she had become immortal. It was a gradual process during their flight to the empire, and they didn't truly know until they had been heard in the Empire for a few decades.

Following behind the children she could barely call bandits, she confirmed they had turned themselves in. There was the instinct in her bones to end the lives of highwaymen and bandits. But the Empire preferred to make those decisions on their own, and perhaps one of these children had an important father. Hopefully their parents would enact more punishment than the constables.

Returning to her home just outside of town, Bryn placed the log and it's mushrooms near a cluster of trees that largely blocked the sun. The nearby stream kept the area cool and damp, and she had transplanted most of her mushrooms in this area. She would wait until the perfect time to use the mushrooms.

She didn't just collect mushrooms, there were many flowering plants around, and her house was filled with various pots and little boxes of dirt growing herbs inside, for things that needed more warmth to grow.

She could process some of the ingredients herself, but the apothecaries in the region nearby often bought from her stock.

She realized there was a conversation going on inside her home. There were only 2 people she let come and go freely, and she suspected both Bergi and Emely were inside.

"It's just a minor thing. The new generation of elders want to meet with us. They are planning a summer festival as everyone gets ready for harvest. We'll probably tell a few of the old stories, that kind of thing," Bergi was saying.

The leader of their band of women and children was the only one of the three still focused on battle. She trained the men of the empire, showing them how to use their own weapons more effectively. For the farmer militiamen, they learned the spear both in stabbing and throwing. For their lieutenants, she taught all that and also the sword.

She never shared the old clan arts. The three of them could remember and use the arts of old themselves, but without the many elders and trainers to help guide and correct them, they had no ability to pass them on to the next generation.

Emely and Bergi were both Boar clan. The berserker's ways were something they could share with each other, while Bryn could only study the Tiger's Clans arts of the War Dance on her own. They could all share in the art of the roar, but the Boar clan's roar was focused on pressuring foes to run away, instead of the frozen fear that her Tiger clan's roar encouraged.

"They haven't sought us out in almost twenty years," Emely was saying as Bryn entered her house.

"Bryn, good to see you," Bergi said.

Bergi was still wearing the very Imperial-style chainmail armor, with the belt sheath and big metal boots. Her hair was short and well-contained, like all imperial soldiers kept it. Bryn didn't doubt their old war leader had the old ways still firmly in her heart, however.

"How's the militia?" Bryn asked.

"They are no doubt questioning your little bandits. There's no one in the county who can resist the Tiger's roar. We don't do resistance training anymore, like we did of old," Bergi said.

"Hey sister, the Elders are asking for our presence. They want to have a meeting with the three of us at their summer festival," Emely said.

"I thought they hated us?" she responded.

Bryn was confused. After going through so many trials to get their band to imperial lands, the survivors largely hated the three of them, feeling like their war leaders had failed them. Almost everyone who survived had someone they had lost on the journey. Slavers had even captured some of their band, attacking when they were already engaged in another battle.

Bryn and her war "sisters" had kept their distance from their people in the years since. Their descendants lived on the edge of the Empire's settled land, largely breaking into two groups, some farmed and others kept herds of sheep and goats.

"Opinion was always divided," Bergi said. "I've met with them over the years, from time to time. Anyway, they've got a new group of elders so they want to reconnect."

"They're half imperial, half clan now, and our band was always such a mixup of many clans, it's not like we can reform the clans of old. If that's what they want," Emely said.

"Let's just see what they have to say first," Bergi said. "You both have your old gear."

Bryn grinned, "I remind myself how to keep it in good condition every year. When is this summer festival?"

"In four days," Bergi said.

"Cutting it close Bergs," Emely said.

"Do you have any of a suitable personality, Ems?" Bryn said.

"Fast as hell, reckless and doesn't mind the smell of lots of blood?" Emely said, nodding. "I've got a few like that. I'll be riding Kick. He's been my training partner every time I go out to loose a quiverfull."

~

Bryn nearly had to ask Emely for a more mellow horse after Drek tried to throw her off three times. The damn horse was spirited and stubborn, but as they rode towards their meeting with the elders, she surged ahead of Emely and Bergi and got some war riding practice again.

If you've ever seen a clan warrior leaping into battle with a massive broadaxe, headed for their target like a massive arrow, you'd know it takes a truly insane horse to stick around, and allow the laughing fool to ride again. Drek didn't mind it as she mounted the horse again. The double-sided broadaxe was a brutal weapon, but one she knew well.

The horses of old had to deal with the sounds of roars, and the drum beat of the war drummers, the proclamation of the trumpeters. All of the old trumpeters and war drummers went with the menfolk as they made their last charge, so there was none to carry on those arts, but between her and Bergi and Emely, they tried to practice and learn the basics. Bergi kept up her drumming as a hobby, and Emely her trumpet, but Bryn focused on the old war dances of the Tiger clan.

They ended their training refresher miles before they approached the merged clan's new lands. Forming up, Bryn rode to Bergi's right and Emely on her left, and they casually trotted into the village where the festival would be held.

There were signs and decorations for the festival, half imperial style and half old style. Before long, they were in front of the new elders, meeting in a closed session as the village prepared for the night the festival would begin.

In everything she had seen in the village, Byrn found the blending of imperial and old styles uncanny and eerie. Even the clothing of the elders, and how this elder's hall was built and decorated was an awkward fusion.

The first elder was an old man with short white hair kept in the imperial style, but his right hand was resting against the handle of his greathammer.

"I must admit, none of us have parents who were part of the exodus. I am part of the third generation born here. If not for Warmaster Fróðmarsdóttir training with our militia on occasion, we would have long since thought you three we in the Halls of the dead with our forebears. I don't understand how you still draw breath when my great-grandmother only lived to see her first grandson after the exodus. But, we have to admit, the people have spoken."

The second elder was the oldest of the elders, surely. Weathered by long days in the sun, she spoke in a raspy halting way. "The people have spoken. They do not want to migrate again. They will not move again. The old elders are gone, and we are the instrument of the people's will in this matter. I have never been an elder, never wanted to, but in this moment, we all put away our former lives to represent the plea of the clan. Boar, Tiger, Eagle and Panther. We still remember those four, there are those who honor the memories at least. These four still raise a united banner to answer the people's cry."

Emely asked, "What exactly has happened. Why did your old elders want to move again?"

The first elder answered, "Our herds have been attacked. We lost many animals, but more importantly, they killed our shepherds too. Then there was a dispute between the farmers and shepherds, but that swiftly turned to greater fear when our scouts discovered these were no mere bandits, but an army finding supplies in the field. They were taking our animals to feed their soldiers, and soon the outlying farmers were attacked too. They had more than enough men to seize crops whenever they wanted to.

This first came up last fall, and over winter we could not feed everyone. We collapsed inward, many farmers had to find an arrangement closer to the village. This year, we had hoped that the army moved on, but our scouts reported new forces headed our way. They see us as a feeding ground to fuel their army's bellies. We are too far out for the Empire to respond. We have had no luck with our reports to them.

The old elders immediately declared that we would be moving into the interior of the empire, so that the Empire itself would be threatened if we were attacked again. That's when the people rejected the Elders' decree.

Everything since then has happened quickly, and harvest is on our doorstep. They will come and take what they want, and in bigger numbers this time. Unless our champions can help lead us once more?"

Bergi, after a long pause, said, "Please let my war sisters and I consider this before we proceed."

"Of course, we must return to the festival, but if you can help us, please make yourself known to our people, to your people. We will be at your command, in the coming days."

The elders (seven of them), left them to consider the situation.

"How many strong is their militia," Bryn asked Bergi.

"Not enough," she answered.

"How long do we have left, if we don't join this fight? I will miss the horses when I'm gone," Emely asked.

"Not long. But in any case I would help them, even if it is all pointless. How you end says more about you then you know," Bergi said.

"I will dance the war dance of our people, one more time," Bryn said. "The wound may have put our clans towards their final rest, but at least we can fight together one more time.

Emely smiled.

~~~
Nenna Svansdottir, eldest of the new Elders, watched as the three Eternal warriors created ripples in the crowds of their people.
"Who among you are worthy drummers?" asked the Warchieftess of old, Berghildur Fróðmarsdóttir. Grandpa had told her of how these three women warriors shook the very foundations of the world as they fought. The rhythms of old that were stirred up in the people back then, in the presence of their champions. Each warrior was called to fight beyond their own capacity when lead by these heroes.
"Bergi" as her fellow eternals called her, had gathered four young lads and a young miss who claimed to know the art of the drum.
Brynfríður Haukvaldsdóttir sought out those who were willing to learn a new dance. She found a mixed group of twenty or so men and women. A number of them were older, in their middle years, surprisingly.
In turn, Emely Olafsdóttir found those who still had skill with the trumpet.
As the three groups began to practice with the eternals, Nenna noticed the others, who were uninvolved, were watching, and responding subtly to the sounds and pulse of the warriors as the tingly feeling of a call to fight began to rise in intensity. It seemed like filling her throught with mead, soothing nerves, and set fire to the hearts of everyone.
Bergi tapped out an intense but exhilarating beat on the drum, while she could visualize the hunting of a tiger in the moves of the dance Bryn was teaching. The call outs of Emely's trumpeters, as they followed her brutal yet enchanting melody drew people in.
Nenna wasn't sure how many people knew it, but these three eternal warriors gradually formed together, and smoothly changed their performances, until all three groups began to work together as one.
Bryn began to use her weapon forms together with the movements of the dance, and many people picked up whatever weapon they had available to follow the powerful Tiger clan movements.
The trumpeters gathered a group of archers, as Emely synchronized a coordinated volley of arrows loosed together with a staccato burst of several trumpets. She switched back and forth between trumpet and bow.
Bergi leapt into the center of the gathering, standing before Nenna and the other elders with a powerful gesture, commanding the performance to stop. There were a few lingering players but then absolute quiet came.
"Once again, the Clans are in a time of desperation. If this is our final hour, let it be in the way of our ancestors. Still, at this hour, you may rise and become honored dead when you pass. Let the Tiger, the Eagle, Boar and the Panther loose their roars, and blare their caused. When the man of our clans made one last charge, they likely never expected that there could be another Charge of the Clans. Will you rise with me, to charge once more, into harms way with a smile on your face.
" Let us raise the banners, call on the trumpeters, strike the drums, stir up the deep call of war, resurrect the Tiger clan's war dance, and the rampaging boar's berserk charge. I only wish some of our number survived from the Eagle and Panther. But now, unlike our exodus, we have women and men worthy to answer this call. We can allow some of the young to still remain children, whether their older brothers and sisters join the war cry for the first time.
"Once more we will take up hammer and axe, and stir our spirits into a firey inferno of war fever. We shall not rest until we have dealt with the threat to our people, and taken up the watch posts of our ancestors. Will you commit with me, to do all that is neccesary, so that we many return to farm and herd when the time of war is at an end?"
There was a massive response as many shouted, Yes, or I will. Devotions and promises were made in the winds.
The night was filled with celebration, but now of war and thunder, as the people readied their hearts and weapons for war.
Bryn, Bergi and Emely spent the last hours before dawn sitting and talking of their civilian lives, what they had taken up, when last they laid the banners to rest. Soon their only thoughts would be of the clan at war.
Had the empires of the world forgotten the might and power of a Clan's war charge?
