This quest is based on a concept I had for an RPG. All the classes drew from the same pool, it was how they used them that differed. The artificer class traded long prep times and resource costs for near-instant in battle move-sets that were limited either their internal mana pool or by the number of one-off devices that they have built.
The big thing I was designing for this character was how he built stuff.
Essentially, I wanted as open of a system I could. So I designed a modular system that would allow players of the artificer class to build anything given time and in certain cases finding certain artifacts or locations. We will get to that second part in a bit. We can start with the core of the system instead.
If you read the symbols left to right and top to bottom, they can be described as such.
A connector - allows the flow of mana in both directions. Can be bent to transition from one side of a 3D object to another
A one-way connector - allows mana flow towards the pointy end only.
A well - a means of storing mana stores 1 mote of mana per square cm of area, rounded down.
A stacked well - wells can be drawn inside each other. multiply base well storage by the number of wells to calculate total storage capacity.
A resonator - drawn between two wells. The resonator allows the mana in the well being pointed to by the point in the middle to take on the properties of the mana in the other well.
Projector - allows the expulsion of mana from a diagram. It draws from the mana pools surrounding it, emptying them once every second. Mystically this is actually a three-dimensional shape, an equilateral tetrahedron. The mana 'originates' in an area centered around the fourth, undrawn point of the tetrahedron in a radius equivalent to the distance from the center of the glyph to the closest point of a three-point star. The mana travels away from the glyph, and each second it travels a distance equivalent to that between the outer points of the three-pointed star. The efficiency of the projector is calculated by the following.
Where R is the distance from the center to the closest point of a perfectly equilateral triangle with its corners at the points of the three-point star.
Where r is the distance from the center to the closest point of the three-point star.
Efficiency is equal to (π*r^2)/(π*R^2)
Acceptor - allows the infusion of mana into a diagram. efficiency is calculated much like that of a projector. Outputs and connections are made at the points of the outer triangle.
3D connector - Allows multiple projectors or acceptors to be connected to define a specific area in which mana originates by connecting the mana origin points of the various glyphs in order to define a volume. The direction in which the mana exits the mana exits the volume is the sum of all the vectors of the various glyphs. the middle section is repeated if the connection is longer than the example.
inverted Gate - drawn accompanied by two wells on either side. it only allows mana that does not match the type contained by the wells to pass through. If empty wells are placed either side it will block all mana.
Gate - Drawn similarly to the inverted gate with two wells on either side. It only allows mana that matches the type contained by the wells to pass through. If empty wells are placed either side it will block all mana.
The designs are drawn with wires, usually inlaid into another surface. The wires can be constructed from many materials, but the most common are made of copper quenched in diluted blood. The other surface is almost completely unimportant, really it only needs to be rigid. circuits can be connected simply by drawing the appropriate components and placing the edges next to each other. Circuits are infused with mana as they are drawn.
Now we get to that second bit.
Artificers usually don't have much of a mana alignment. So you usually need to find some other means of aligning mana in diagrams. That can range from extracting mana from specific reagents, locations or having it provided to you by some other being.
Mana can be aligned to any concept, though acquiring those concepts can be a bit tricky. They often need to be heavily refined from base components which is a long and arduous process. Figuring out how to apply that mana can also be a challenge.
The above is a diagram for an attuned raycaster, one of the simplest weapons of an artificer. It projects beams of attuned mana at a target. The bottom-most well is the input well which accepts mana from a user or specified circuits. Mana flows from it into a second well which is resonating with the mana on either side. The resonated mana is allowed through the gate into a storage array. This stores mana for later use. When mana not matching the alignment mana is fed into the two mana-pools connecting the storage array to the projector module, it allows the mana to flow into the projector which releases a beam of mana at a target. To stop shooting the target, the user pulls mana from the wells on either side of the inverted gate.
You learned of artifice as a young child. You found a grimoire in your grandfather's attic and were immediately enraptured by the intricate drawings and interesting effects.
Since that time you have come a long way. You are already :
[ ] 15 years old - You are on the brink of adulthood and in a mystically important time of your life.
[ ] 25 years old - You are in your prime and at the peak of your power.
[ ] 45 years old - Your best years are behind you and you depend more and more on the tricks that you have picked up over the years to keep up with the younger generation.
You check out your outfit before you head out for the day :
[ ] Write-in
As you leave, you spend the time pondering what put you in these circumstances :
[ ] On the streets of Wakefield Massachusetts fighting crime just like the Justice League do! You were recently noticed by a retired Dr. Fate who sponsored your entry into a league sponsored team of young superhumans.
[ ] In Brockton Bay, fighting various villains around town. Lately, you have been tailed by a group of mercenaries.
[ ] In New York, minding your own business until some government spooks started asking questions. Apparently, they want you to join some sort of avenging initiative.
A/N: you can start voting while I fill out the rest of the stuff.

While you had not agreed to being a part of the initiative, you did acquiesce to join them in the case of an emergency. Apparently there has been one such emergency since you last meeting.
According to the packet you were given, they were experimenting on something that they called a tessaract that they had captured from the Nazis. Something happened and a very humanoid alien that claimed to be Loki of Asgard had made off with it.
Due to the potentially mystical nature of the threat they decided to call on you since for whatever reason they did not seem to know any other artificers.
As you leave, you check your tools and after a few moment of thought, decide to bring something in case you get into a fight. You take a look inside the admittedly rather empty gun vault you had put in the wall and take out your latest creation
[ ] Your Force Staff, a staff that allows you to project beams of force or generate a tower shield of neutral mana.
[ ] Your Pyre Pistol. A simple artifact that could project beams of heat aligned mana.
[ ] Your Hover Harness. A climber's harness with numerous circuits mounted to it. It should allow you about three to four hours of flight. Or more accurately it should allow you about 300,000 m/s of delta-v
[ ] Your Mantle of Protection. A simple cloak that can be wrapped around you to provide a powerful barrier against any attack.
[ ] Write In (create a circuit that at most uses 100 glyphs, not counting standard connectors, designs must be submitted for vetting within three days time so that people will have a couple of days to vote on the situation)
As prepared as you can be, you head to the new Stark Tower where you are guided to the helipad and from there onto a rather futuristic jet.
About half an hour later, you arrive on a large aircraft carrier. You are soon greeted by Phil Coulson, the agent that had made contact with you.
After a few more people arrive, the entire craft begins to rumble as it takes to the sky.
It is not long before you make your way to the bridge. There you have the mixed pleasure of meeting the others who were offered places in the Avengers Initiative.
Mixed because despite how awesome it is to meet them, they don't seem to take you seriously asking why Fury had brought in a kid.

While the Tony Stark and Bruce Banner start their own efforts to track Loki, you :
[ ] Reinforce the holding cell they intend to use.
[ ] Study the data you have on Loki, just in case you missed something.
[ ] Try and see if there is something you can do to help track the Tessaract.
[ ] Write-In
The point of the write-in option is to allow people to explore their options with artifice. It allows people to create their own options.
I bet that with ten minutes, a piece of paper and a pen I could have a sketch of the complete design for that idea ready enough that I could take a picture and post it to the thread for verification.
But that is not the point of this quest. The point of the quest is to encourage players to experiment with what is a very open-ended system and create options that won't otherwise be possible.
Indeed all four of the options are nowhere near the best that can be created, requiring no more than 50 glyphs a piece - the flight harness if you were wondering. I will always incentivize the creation of original circuits over the stuff that I offer pre-packaged
A/N: I later mentioned on the other thread that I am willing to troubleshoot designs if people are having trouble with them.
You simply ignore the other team members for the moment and walk up to Fury. You do keep an eye on them, watching how they act.
"Where do you intend to hold him?" you ask, "I'm fairly sure I can improve it and stop him from breaking out."
Fury looks at you before calling for Agent Hill, "Take her to the holding cell, lets see what she can do."
You are quickly escorted to a large room with a circular glass chamber suspended in the middle.
"How much to you want to restrain him?" you ask, "I have an older design that work really well but might kill him. It will suspend him in the center and he won't be able to move at all, not even talk. Or I can simply make it so that your walls can handle a lot more punishment both physically and mystically. Or I could extend the magical null field to cover the entire cell and just limit the physical protections to the walls."
"We need him to be able to talk," said Hill as she waved over one of the technicians, "But according to Thor, his brother is quite the accomplished mage, the last setup would be best. You can requisition anything you need from Bill here."
[ ] Generic Design
[ ] Write in - 200 glyphs.
A/N : I am delaying the artifact until you actually get into combat. It seems like force staff is winning at the moment, so if no-one gets any support before then, that's what I will be going with.
